Ya forgot about a bit of NS... the fact they sell half their fleet to "standardize" their roster... then wondering why they are so short on power after purging several locomotive classes.
I don't think i will get surprised if one day NS will lease Amtrak Chargers to supplement their power. I mean, they literally didn't do it in the past with Amtrak F40s, right....
@@anf_8310_abchargers are kinda ass so don't count on it
@@THE_IRON_HORSE one day those will be the things you see pulling Amtrak trains, i'm sure of it.
@ardiannurfatah5938 daught it, they break down in gold weather, it could happen but eh
Fun fact: They’re also having a EOTD shortage which is why DPU’s at the rear are very common
BNSF is like the only railroad with a huge quantity of Dash 9s
NS still does, but their numbers are dwindling at a rapid pace.
Still have a large amount of Ex company units in there original scheme
cn has over a 100
😂😂😂
Bro ain't lying. frfr
Alaska Railroad: Hehehe looks like I'm winning.
It’s odd seeing a Conrail heritage unit when you grow up around strings of coal cars and locomotives still wearing Conrail Quality. In fact my local loading facilities still have probably 10% of their rolling stock as old Conrail hoppers.
4:07 what about the chicago bears? Not a railroad but they pair well with blue and orange.
Not a recipe for winning football though
I hate the fact that there aren’t seven class 1’s anymore.
Well, if you count Ferromex...
@@doblaje_a_la_medida we dont
same
It's only something worth hating if you aren't from the country that the railway that bought that seventh Class I railway comes from. I am, so I don't hate it.
@@furioussherman7265 your county didnt buy it
What I hate is that there's an ocean between me and the trains I'm interested in.
You like British trains, or am I just misinterpreting it?
@@TheBlueMarbleNationalist I like British trains. I find them more interesting.
same here.. I live in india. and Indian railways were more diverse. Now standardization and 100% electrification is going on.. and it sucks as a train enthusiast.
@roadwarrior114 what makes you like british trains?
@@roadwarrior114 I like both
American trains hit so home. They're huge, nostalgic, and a bit cool looking sometimes, especially any of the trains painted in a war bonnet color scheme.
And on the otherrr side
British trains especially the older steam ones were the ones I grew up seeing and actually researching because uhnmmmm,
a little thing called Sodor
BNSF just decides to do Heritage Hoppers instead, they are built different.
facts😂
Something I dislike on UP is the faded burnt locomotives. Nearly all the UP's I see are ether very dirty, extremely faded, or the flag is burnt or all of the above. The repainted units are nice, but who knows what they'll look like in 10 years.
Used to be that when they went through a fuel siding, they'd go through a wash as well. UP also figured out it costs about $40,000 to repaint a locomotive, so saving money while your fleet looks like Dante's Inferno RR is the name of the game.
I used to work for a shortline railroad as a locomotive mechanic, there were guys there who used to work for the class 1s before they made the switch to the shortline, they have told me stories about them, there was a guy who used to work for UP. He was a conductor, and from what he’s told me, he said that UP literally “owned him” and apparently it’s like that with all the class 1s. UP especially is the worst out of the bunch, I might go back to the railroad but if anything, you won’t catch me dead working for UP.
Ive heard the same. It’s why if I ever want to go into driving trains it’s gonna be for a commuter service
good comment... but a word of warning for those who want to bail from their class 1 slavemaster... make sure you know whether or not the class 2 or shortline you go to pays in to *RAILROAD RETIREMENT* ... not all roads pay into it... for ALL the crap you have to put up with when working for a railroad, railroad retirement is definitely a decent reward... i would suggest BEFORE you make the jump, find out about it
From what I know it’s not like that with CSX at least recently I know a guy who works for CSX and says they treat him pretty well I also know a guy who used to work for CSX and said they gave the best benefits out of any class 1.
@Jabba.Da.Hutt_ I’ve heard very bad things about BNSF, and the history behind CSX is that things got very draconian under Hunter Harrison, and considerably better under Jim Foote, then, when Foote stepped down the former CEO of Ford has only made things better. CSX is part of the reason why I don’t buy the “PSR is bad” narrative. When you increase safety, decrease travel times, and increase profits. That’s a win for everyone involved. Note these statistics are from train magazine.
@Jabba.Da.Hutt_ in 2017 the shareholders of NS asked to improve the company’s safety standards. NS said no.
You nailed the time off issue with the BNSF! You speaketh the truth!
Luckily we just got rest cycles. Depending on how the terminal voted it’s either 6 days on call 3 days off or 7 days on call 3 days off.
“I like trains and I like yapping in-front of a microphone” perfect
When it comes to modern class 1s, the only thing consistently worth your time railfanning are locals. As much as we hate on their road fleets, CN and BNSF have diverse and unique local/short haul fleets that should be documented before they go
dude you dont have a sleep schedule...... CHEERS
Me neither honestly
1st step of joining the RR, no sleep schedule.
HEY don't make fun of MY GEVOS 😂 you should call one of your videos hey OklahomaRailfan here's a GEVO for you
I live in NS territory, so I pretty often see Dash 9s or AC44C6M's (God forbid I ever see a GEVO or ACE again) but I hate BNSF and CN with a burning passion. I'm already biased towards NS and CP, so that will forever dictate that I have beef with them, but I honestly hate the combination of orange and green for BNSF. The paint scheme itself is cool, just not a big fan of the colors. As for CN, they are the Penn Central of Canada. I get why people hate NS, but even NS isn't as bad as CN when it comes to derailments.
I'm obviously biased towards NS as is, but the one thing I love about them and their predecessors is how they have a tradition of running long-hood forward. I've never seen one myself, but it ain't Norfolk Southern if they don't run long-hood forward.
Danm, I did not know that UP was planing on storing they're SD70Ms. That sucks ☹️
I used to see the UP SD70Ms all the time back in early 2010s, now it’s rare seeing one, I only saw one last year and this year
A Mich. shortline,-- LAKE STATE RWY.,got 5 or 6 ex. UP SD70's. The ones that are repainted look far better than any UP loco ever did.
@@Joe-d7m6k When did this happen?
@@BNSF1458 Maybe about a year ago-- year and a half.
@@BNSF1458not all of the SD70MACs on Union Pacific are getting put to storage
If I had to pick a favorite out of CSX’s recent heritage unit locomotive fleet, it would probably have to be No. 1869 the “Chesapeake & Ohio”
For the Canadian railroads in particular, CP seems to have more of a "quality over quantity" and CN has more "quantity over quality"
More like CN is trip over dollars to save pennies and screw everyone over on the way.
CPKFC is just a chicken with its head cut off.
The thing I hate the most about CN is that they're pretty much strangling Amtrak long distance capacity for western Amtrak long distance trains with their Chicago - Carbondale line. How so? They're forcing Amtrak to run 7 superliners on the Illini and Saluki trains, taking away capacity from trains that need those superliners like the Zephyr, the Chief, the Empire Builder, the Texas Eagle, and the Capitol Limited. Also CN is just really bad to Amtrak in general, since they demanded Amtrak to pay for maintenance on a line that the Adirondack runs on last year.
Congress needs to repeal some railroad law from the past to give priority to Amtrak., one regional dispatcher in the upper midwest to route all rail movement
CSX’s Heritage aren’t fully painted because of what they were going for. They’re going for showing their different predecessors becoming one, CSX. If you ask me, it’s actually genius and a very unique way of honoring their heritage
BNSF orange doesn't age all that well either. I really miss the Cascade green of the BN locos. BNSF=Better Not Start a Family...
I’m pissed off at BNSF because they had half a dozen blue bonnet gp60’s in great condition here in Fontana California. Everything was awesome, complete Santa Fe lashups then they disappeared. They all reappeared as f-ing pumpkins.
Things I hate about Class 1s... They invest in the bare minimum for their infrastructure... Some PURPOSELY block Amtrak and refuse to give their way... I'm sick and tired of these private companies... bring back Conrail
If you're looking for SD70m's most of them are in Chicagoland. I caught an SD70m duo pulling a train just the other day. Then I saw one trailing an intermodal train. And one is on a local near me.
What I hate is that I can only record one railroad that people roast every time I mention it due to it using the Conrail logo.
I can confirm I hate GEVOS (especially NS). Today, I was waiting for the afternoon departure of (the symbol NS 31M) which had a solo GEVO. So, when they were coming down the yard to grab their freight and go, I heard on my scanner "LOUD AND CLEAR" that their battery died on a NS ES44AC lmao. Frick NS and frick GE.
I grew up, and still live by, the formerly Wisconsin central, now Canadian national main line between Fond du Lac and Slinger Wisconsin. I've seen a lot of Canadian national trains in my 35 years. And I don't think I've ever seen one that I would call Pink. The red that CN uses is more of a tomato red, and it just gets more orange as it fades. I personally like the CN colors, the old seargent stripe paint scheme is awesome, one of the boldest of all time. What's interesting to me about the CPKC new colors is that it's basically the CN livery, but the red goes 3/4 down the train before white stripe/black, instead of 1/4. CN is og and looks better. I agree, pretty uninspired and disappointing.
Honestly as a CN locomotive I’m glad my brethren don’t go too pink just slightly orange. Also my heritage brethren are not very good looking locomotives.
Yessir finally! The 2000s and 2010s were goated but not the 2020s so much!!!!
CN Conductor here, not sure why this popped up in my recommended but here we are. I operate out of Mac Yard, primarily running across the York sub and up Bala to the northern terminals (Capreol, North Bay) as far as locomotive paint goes, they don't care about the yard engines paint that much, but they are good about keeping the Main line locomotives in good condition, both mechanically and aesthetically speaking. Only thing they seem to forget is keeping on top of the engines radio capability. The locomotives radio tends to shit itself in high transmission traffic areas i.e. Halton and York subs but otherwise are fine.
Edit: By the nine I've never had a comment liked by a creator so fast
2nd Edit: CP sucks.
Honestly, BNSF should make heritage. I'd be okay with the crappy csx way.
As long as I can see an SP&S or DRGW Gevo or whatever.
0:38 Bnsf also used to have 2000 dash 9s so compare the Gevos to that.
I used to work for Norfolk Southern and they also use the point system, and you’re basically on call 24/7
"WHY AREN'T THEY FULLY PAINTED!!!!!!" - every foamer ever
I know, I know...
I can respect that. I just can’t stand people who say that they hate them and then not only don’t give a reason why, but are also not thankful in some way
Also BNSF 1458, I know you hate the Chessie one, but the first picture you showed of it looks really nice. Great photo selection.
@@TrainLover3268 this is facts
I have "friends" on facebook who have roasted me thoroughly for even daring to question the awesome presence of a heritage unit, no matter how badly some of those classic schemes have been butchered by CSX. It's like the worst possible throwback to the days when you didn't have the slightest clue what the power for their next train would be.
GEVO👎🏻( also looks like they split the diiference & went with the old Great Northern livery🤔BNSF did…)
I get to see BNSF (ex Santa Fe) 554 go past my house every day, local service. It's a b40-8w in warbonnet paint by the way
The CSX heritage fleet is cool, sure it isnt fully painted but they still look nice either way imo
I’m a big fanboy of CSX and I like there heritage units and there spirit units like like 911, 3194,1776 and the operation lifesaver
The number 1 biggest thing i hate is PSR.
Same, it really screwed everyone over
@BNSF1458 especially since it means more GEs and fewer EMDs and other manufacturers if they exist anymore
6:40 I Didn’t Know They Had A Livery For CPKC Yet And That Literally Looks Like It Would Be Either A Slightly Modified CP Unit Or AWVR 767 From Unstoppable 💀💀💀
I'm a Canadian but I also forgot about their cpkc livery and even tho I love Canadian Pacific I think the new livery just looks worse
Man, It’s a shame the SD70Ms are being put in storage, I love those units.
The CSX HUs are awful to me bc 1. They’re not fully painted like they should be. And 2. ALL
of them (with the exception of 1982, the “Seaboard System” have historical inaccuracies of some kind! They say in the vids that they “do the research to get it right” when in reality there’s no way that’s the case. In my brutally honest opinion, the CSX HUs are not just the worst HUs but some of the worst LOCOMOTIVES ever painted. They. Are. U G L Y.
7:39 Yeah, the paint on cn’s Dc gevos is pretty faded. But it does give then some character, like with their p3s p5s and 1st gen k5hls.
I agree, but when everything is faded it won't look so great
0:35 good thought but like to disagree. More trains. The less we need worry about shortage. And new upgrades to train alway Good. One question rather did something not sound safe like 7000 something or mild hurt form more safer sound cool 8000 something.
2:27 I refer to that as Union Pacific's "Wokamotive."
BNSF's biggest flaw is that it's not even a tenth as cool as either of it's halves.
This is so true
Two things I hate about BNSF are, they don’t have any heritage units and they don’t care about their War Bonnet units
Because the war bonnets are in terrible shape because they are old
@@BAS19.6 I’ve seen older locomotives in better conditions that them
You're slightly wrong about the war bonnets. BNSF management actively hates them
There's still locomotives in santa fe and Burlington northern colors so they can't do nothing about heritage units rn
@@MystiCmeshtool Those are locomotives that weren’t repainted. They just slapped the BNSF logo onto them and called it good.
Your videos are great. I have laughed so at the truthfulness of your comments. Keep up the good work
I personally like GEVO’s mainly for the sound they make and how badass they look in my opinion. SD70’s are cool, too, but I’ve grown up seeing NS, CSX, and BNSF AC44’s, Dash 9’s, and ES44’s all around me.
you forgot to mention CSXs bad management until 2023
If I were to talk about Norfolk southern bro the color is BORING but Csx is A+ for me because I live next to the track
GEVOs made modern railfanning pretty boring… if I need a sleep aid I watch Class 1 videos. When I actually want to stay awake I watch 2nd gen EMDs!
Dash 9s are cooler then C6Ms
Facts
Dash 9s are straight up trash
@@DJmcRUSHDash engines are not trash.
@@RAtheGoodRailfanner_888 Trash9, Junk9, Crap9. They all suck. Only good thing is that the cabs are quiet
@@DJmcRUSH Dash 8s dont suck. Why you say trash 9s for?
Oop your mid west/Canadian came out a little there at the end 😂 that caught me off guard
UP has the point system too. And yes it sucks. You max out at 28. When you lay off you usually get 7 points per week day and like 10 or somethin on the weekends now? Idk they just changed them recently again. Doesn’t take long to stack up and takes 2 weeks marked up to get 4 points back. It’s annoying especially when real life strikes and you can’t show up to work. We also get 5 sick days for the entire year too…
The Pere Marquette CSX heritage unit is the most natural and nice in my opinion. The color change is less violent and because of the C&O coloration it just works. That and I live along the line so bias.
i think csx was going for a peeling back the layers look like underneath csx there is the cheesie system, seaboard system, lanchaster and nothern ,conrail you get the point kits literally Pelling back the layers of time .
I like that both CSX and NS have Conrail heritage units (as they should). It would be cool to see them running together as foreign power one way or the other.
I'm just glad CSX is doing heritage schemes at all. They're not doing it the way I'd like them to, but at least they're doing it.
I think Arkansas have some SD70macs I live in Arkansas and we have some SD70macs on run through trains
To be fair tho CN doesn’t spend money unless they have to, where I live they still run IC SD70’s with the Death Star livery or whatever it’s called that’s why they keep a lot of they’re old fleet cause they still work and run so what’s the point of just getting rid of perfectly good SD70’s or even GP40’s so just having a basic 100 year anniversary livery isn’t very shocking to me tbh and apparently I caught one (forgot when) and I didn’t even know till like a year later
CN definitely keeps more of it's interesting power in Canada (obviously with exceptions) from what I've noticed, I wonder if it has to do with PTC requirements being different for Canadian railroads?
But i still dont get getting rid of the wc sd45s
@@BNSF1458Canada literally does not have PTC, thus a lot of the "interesting" units dont do cross border travel unless they're trailing
I live in Chicago next to the St. Charles Air line aka downtown connection to the Iowa division . I see the SD-70s almost every day only a handful are in CN paint . On occasion I will see EJ&E SD-38s more often GTW GP-38-2s and sometimes SD-40-2 /Gp-40-2 in CN/GTW/IC paint . I think EHH taught them to be like ICG which didn't repaint most of the former GM&O units.
The CSX HUs get way too much hate. I get how a few of their colors clash, but at least CSX has HUs now. The best looking ones IMO are 1869 (C&O), 1871 (ACL), 1897 (Monon), 1982 (SBD), and 1836 (RF&P).
5:30 shows how little the general US population knows about how rail companies work.
Exactly
@58 One of the other things I hated about the NS derailment was the media constantly spouting nonsense about how the airbrakes were "civil war era", implying they were out of date and should be replaced with ECP brakes. I found this incredibly moronic as, while I agree that ECP Brakes are better from a technology standpoint, they aren't compatible with the airbrakes that, lemme see, EVERY OTHER COMMON CARRIER RAILROAD IN NORTH AMERICA USES, and NS would be shooting itself in the foot if they implemented it. Also, the brakes weren't even what caused the derailments, as it was overheated bearings that caused the cars to jump the tracks and the defect detectors failed to recognize it. Yeah, NS f*cked up and they should pay more money to the people of EP and need to hire more people to maintain their shit, but I also blame the media for its total f*cking incompetence in properly conveying the information to the general public, who now thinks that every derailment is some elaborate government scheme to break the economy or something.
UP 1979 is so ugly it’s awful, I can’t imagine the employees reaction to seeing this thing.
CSX also has way too many GEVOs. Every single CSX train I've seen has had either a GEVO, a GP38-3, or an SD40-3, Also, is it required for all Class I railroads to have K5HLs on basically all of their GEVOs? 💀
Not all Gevos have K5hls lol you just gotta try to catch one with a greater horn.
Man, so sorry one of the top 3 most important systems in the world and country isn’t worried about pleasing some kids who film their shipments and business🙃
0:37 & 1:04
My anger issues could never if someone said that... 😵💫
I think the CPKC livery looks alright could be better same with some CSX units but eh idc
The #1 worst thing about BNSF is their stupid logo lol
UP has a worse points policy now
Basically railroads describe in 3 words
BNSF: to many gevos
UP: killing SD70Ms
CSX: fade heritage units
NS: east Palestine
CPKC: no
CN: maple syrup
Yep
The thing you said about the East Palestine derailment is insanely true. “There they go to derail another train” this, “they derail those trains on purpose” that. It was because of a hot axle. Most derailments are something else, like hitting a semi or a wrong set switch.
Just move to chama. It's pretty much steam.
1:45 I wonder what that means for 4404 & 4533, their main OCS power.
2:15 I see BNSF SD70ACes on quite a few trains still
imo 1979 is good
The CSX fades aren’t too bad. I don’t quite get the hate, CSX doesn’t care. (Also, I saw IAIS 513 switching LHF once, that was funny. As well as the time I saw a CN SD40-2W running LHF on a “road train”, technically L572)
i liked and subscribed but when i did Boom, a train, but no heritage units but still, it kinda worked
You are so right about the pink fading on cp liveries. I swear, one day I am going to have like a ACE under perfect light. And theres gonna be a barbie dream house on the back that ruins it all.
I hate all of bnsf's paint schemes. I hate the GN orange and green, have always, always disliked it. How, how... could a corporation dump the blue bonnet, warbonnet and the original BN green white and black paint jobs for that pos GN orange and green? Total garbage. Bring back the oldies bnsf.
I hear ya
Bnsf had a baldwin in operation until 2009
The Beep!
Bro you forgot NS 💀💀💀 honestly, it doesn’t matter, they derail so much they don’t even exist imo
No I didn't 💀
I saw an SD70M leading a Union Pacific freight train back in October 2023.
Oh, you think BNSF is the only railroad with a shit attendance policy?
Also, SD70Ms are trash, hats off to UP for finally getting rid of those piles of garbage.
Yeah.
Foamors r wantabies that never made it in RR
CSX has the ugliest colors.
Yes.
As a cp railfan and modeler, yes their paint scheme is the most boring paint scheme in the world
I saw 4 C40-8W’s yesterday.
I've seen 4 BNSF aces in a week, I live on a CN line 😭😭
4:45 nay older more crashes
2:27 i was dying of coughing because I absolutely hate that unit so much! I was laughing when you said 4014! 😂
As an unfortunate BNSF Staples Sub foamer I can confirm that this line is smattered with GEVOs
CP gets a bonus for avoiding tier 4 junk so far. Railfanning is dead when half of the class 1 rosters will be tier 4s that sound like over-sized vacuum cleaners.
I like the CSX Heritage units i think honestly the biggest reason everyone has a problem with them is because we are use to fully painted Heritage units like UP & NS have but CSX made there's stand out from the rest. Only thing i would change is they should put the Heritage logo on the front of the cab so you can actually tell its one of the Heritage units from head on
They do need to make a different way to separate the Heritage scheme from the normal CSX scheme like there military unit
Former UP conductor here. I was one of the survivors of the 2014 Hoxie AR head on train crash. Working for UP wasn’t as bad back then. Great regular turn road pools, good home time between trips, and laying off wasn’t that hard to do. Just stay under 8 layoffs in a 90 day period.
I was in an SD70M when we were struck by the other train. Much better to be in than an SD40-2 in that situation.
Maturing is realizing Gevos are the best
At least CSX is proud of their heritage…
If you think the older engines on CN are bad, look at their 9WLs
VERY VERY good video... and for the record, the warbonnet paint scheme is the BEST in the history of railroading... (um, when the red ain't faded)
I don’t mind CSX’s heritage units too much. I’d sometimes picture them in full heritage paint and the results in those thoughts look off
Those are the two nuttiest claims I'm glad I hadn't heard till now about the East Palestine derailment. Then again, it's easy to see how people that think the world revolves around them would easily slip into "anything that ever happens is targeted at me." I'm sure class 1 railroads/the government would love to derail an entire freight train to go after one random person, sure. /s
I like the CPXC paint scheme, but _only_ because it reminds me of Unstoppable. Which isn't even the best train movie (that's be Atomic Train, you can't change my mind).
You forgot something. THEY ALL FIRE THEIR EMPLOYEES AFTER THEY HIRE THEM!!
Damn am i seriously the only person who loves UP 1979?
No, lots of people do
