  • He was a rising star, a former police officer and Brooklyn minister turned activist and councilman. James E. Davis was preparing for re-election when he was shot and killed on the balcony of the City Council chamber by a would-be political rival. His untimely death opened wounds from the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and Bobby Kennedy.
Almost 16 years after his shocking assassination, how does his legacy inform the political landscape of post 9/11 New York City?
Only in New York chronicles some of the most controversial moments in recent New York City history. A subway shooting that ignited a racial firestorm; the deadly days of the crack epidemic; a pair of high-profile trials that exposed the hidden horrors of domestic abuse; and the assassination of a rising political star inside the hallowed corridors of municipal power. These stories are retold with rare footage pulled straight from the WPIX archives. Only in New York features new interviews with PIX11 journalists, expert analysts and the headline-makers themselves. Watch Fridays in March on PIX11 TV.

It is a shame Charles Barron did not speak up, more. If a man is deathly afraid and spooked about a character, speak to that man, in jeopardy, on the side.
What is so difficult about taking that man to the side and say, ...
"how well do you know him? I am deathly afraid for us, both.
Something about his eyes and demeanor got me spooked, please, please, please, just for today, do us, both, a favor ... do not ever turn your back on this guy!"
Those simple words would have made a huge impact to increase James Davis's prospects of being here, today.
Too much is at stake to rely on ...he saw the expression on my face.
In tough scenarios like those, it is utmost important that one must step up to proceed to make certain that you have the Councilman's undivided attention.

Handsome man......he was assassinated for political reasons. James was doing too much good for the poor and disadvantaged and the Jewish community didn't like that.

I remember working EMS in the Mount Sinai area that day. There was so much confusion, initially there was a message sent to us that the bridges were closed because there was a shooting In City Hall. My God.But, blessings to the councilman and loved ones.

MR. DAVIS was every where, he was one of those politicians where he was always accessible to the community. I met him in crown heights while working for CCM a non-profit with THE educational director Marie. He was invited to join our community meeting called PYCE. At the time, Premature Death was running through crown heights and a lot of good people died young that was really helping to improve the black side of the crown heights community. I myself was targeted and killed spiritually, mentally, and I'm barely hanging in physically. MY CAREER, MY HEALTH, MY SOUL, AND MY DREAMs all suffered a premature death. Here is to all the young soldiers that were in trenches of crown heights, fighting for better. NO MEN or WOMEN are perfect, but every warrior has slain evil to keep the good alive in black communities, and many were sacrificed to keep the evil alive in black communities. RIP MR. DAVIS!!!!!

There definitely needs to be more of these. I would suggest one about the time from the mid 60's through the 70's when the Bronx, and parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, burned constantly.

Unfortunately James Davis was killed by a deranged blackman. We understand the climate of Crown Heights and how great James Davis was and still is I had the pleasure of going to Tilden HS. With him where he was a star athlete and student a true Champion he is truly missed.

I always wondered what this was all about as well as the brother that was blown up in a private jet Ron Brown secretary of state. And my hunch says Eric Adams wants this information released now because he fears a similar fate. Especially after Eric realized that subway shooting in BK was staged using Frank James. A known critical events actor who just left Moon Township, PA, a town that's known for staged crisis events. All I know is that these foreign tethers that the dominant society uses as buffers against Foundational Black Americans are immediately a greater threat to us right now, especially with all these staged events in the last couple of years. Eric Adams God's Speed!

This was before gays had any protective legislation and very few civil rights. Gays had long been discriminated against and ostracized from many areas of mainstream success.
