  • There are two main options for solar. Off-grid and grid-tied. What is right for your. This hopefully simply explains how grid-tied works.

I have been researching backup solar generators. It's absolutely crazy the amount of research it takes to understand solar, there's so many variables.

I am trying to learn more about solar and decide if it is right for my situation. Thank you.

Fun fact: here in Manitoba (Canada) we are essentially 100% hydro generated power - incredibly reliable and cheap. There's actually NO economic reason to put solar in.
Literally it would cost you more to install solar than using from the grid.

So when you sell power back to the grid are they giving you credit for just the kilowatt hours that you produce, or they also giving you a ceedit on the transmission cost because everything that comes through your meter from the grid you pay for not only the power that's produced but the power that's transmitted over the wire as a separate cost. Are you getting credit for that transmission cost when it goes back to the grid through your solar panels? I actually have a Sol-Ark solar system and I'm off grid but what I can see is that with the separation of the power generation and a transmission cost I can see that they probably do not give you credit for the transmission cost when you give them back let's say 50 KW hours are they also giving you the transmission cost back?

I believe you get credit based on wholesale cost because they obviously resell any excess you can produce. Be aware that regardless of what the law says you are trying to poke holes in a multi-trillion dollar golden goose and they don't like that at all. I have a small wind turbine that will produce 100+% of my electricity without batteries, generator, or inverter but I'm going to do a battery bank to isolate myself from the grid forever.

@@onetransmission7871 yeah I'm pretty sure they don't give you a credit for the transmission cost which is about half the price you pay for electricity these days! And I don't believe all these people saying they have a zero electric bill because the way I figure it you've got to produce three times what you use to get a credit amount that will reduce your entire electric bill including the transmission cost. Myself,- I live 25 Miles off grid, so all the electricity I produce is free and I have a battery backup system because it's necessary when you're off grid - you just cannot operate without a battery storage system. I was thinking of adding a small wind turbine to my system, because in the winter I use more electricity- and I could use a few extra kilowatt hours...and it's very windy in the winter out here in the desert, so it should work well.

I get credit for the electricity of produces at wholesale as stated, but not for the transmission cost. I still have to pay a minimum fee for that, which is something like $41 per month. The problem where I live is that once you get a certificate of occupancy for a grid-based home, you can never untie from the grid with respect to that cost.

People used to laugh at me when I told them. Nobody's laughing anymore. Write this on your wall in large letters: " there's nothing left in this world but liars and thieves". Not the country I grew up in at all.

I sooooo wanna do this but it all seems so costly and complicated to me. I woukd have to find someone who knows what they're doing to hook it up. However, I'd like to completely disconnect from the grid itself, where I do not feed any of my extra into their system, but I think there is a law in my small town that I MUST BE connected to the grid (not totally sure) I would also prefer that my panels not be located on top of my roof because I cannot get up there and with as often as I've had to replace my roof with hurricanes and such, I'm sure I'd have to pay for removal and reconnection of said panels which will add to the already outrageous cost of the roof replacement.
Why has someone not yet invented roofing shingles that are mini-solar panels?

In Most states it is against the law, or they simply will not allow you to "not connect" to the grid if you're already connected to it, or even if the grid is available you usually are required to connect to it. I have heard of some people connecting just their in-law apartment that separate from the house or the garage to run strictly Off the Grid but that's an expensive way of putting power out to one of those smaller structures on your property. I live 25 Mi off grade so I have my own system that's not connected to anything and I reap the benefits of free electricity year round.

My husband did the research and installed our system in 2022 on his own. We are not set up to feed back to the grid. Didn't want to be connected to them at all. Our system is large enough to keep the grid off all the time. He tries to help those who are planning to set it up on their own. He is not an electrician. Gavin Stone DIY Homestead
Solar is just an appliance. You don't need anyone's permission. Do you ask permission to have a gas generator for back up?

@@BoringcountrylifeI agree 100 percent, actually it's nobody's business what you do for solar on your home except when you go to get the permit they will require all kinds of stuff and make sure that they charge you a lot of money for unnecessary things and everybody gets to make money off of you. But if you are installing and not connecting to the Grid in any way shape or form you may be able to get away with it. The only problem is with you sell the home if somebody thinks there's something wrong with it or if somebody does an inspection and see something that isn't quite the code it'll be questioned and there'll be a closer observation of that when you go to sell the home it could cause you to lose a sale or have to get an inspector in there to certify it was all done to code. Even if you don't connect to the grid you still have to have it connected in a safe manner which will not harm someone or even just as bad burn down your home.

@@Navy_Snipe I agree, the installer needs to have an excellent understanding of what they are doing. My husband has seen people do stupid stuff when setting up their solar and then ignoring advice or warnings. So far the expense has been limited to damaging their equipment, no deaths or fires. Anything electrical should always be taken very seriously. You can easily kill yourself by touching the wrong wires. As far as house inspections go, we can easily un-install everthing he installed if he needed to. We built our home with grid power and all that was done to code. We just chose to keep the grid turned off now and only use solar.
Anyone using a gas/propane backup generator plugged into their home's electric is doing the same thing. They have similar risks if they don't know what they are doing.
I don't have the mental capacity to understand solar myself. Maybe I could with years of study. I realize that it does require certain mental aptitudes to be able to understand how it works and how to install it. You also need physical strength. My husband is not an electrician, but he is a tradesmen and is self taught in many areas. Everything he has learned about solar so far has been via youtube and contacts from there. It is definitely still a developing area that just anyone can't jump into. It also requires operational skills and more management than using grid power.
Most people should stay on the grid and enjoy the ease of use. Solar isn't for everyone.

It is a priviledge to be alive and serve the Lord wherever placed. David didn't have the privilege of building the sanctuary, but he did all he could to make sure Solomon could. Working hard, sacrificing, and saving for 20 years to reach our goal was a calling. It didn't feel like a privilege, though it does seem like a blessing now.
