Reminds me when i visited Kenya about 10 years ago. I noticed people were living much differently here in the US. Noticed kids were used to getting their only meal at school. Might get something at home or maybe not. The kids didn't have electronic games or other things kids in the US have, and they were perfectly happy. Some lived in a one room home...all sleeping in the same room. Or their mud wall would fall to the ground in a rain storm..then picking it up after the rain stops. They were happy when the walls stayed up.
Then I came back home...almost made me nauseated. Thinking how people want all the comforts, always wanting more..to what end? Then finding happiness in alcohol or whatever it is..because (fill in the blank). Then I had to rethink...what is happiness? Contentment? Is it God? Hmm..

I think gratitude is a big part of it. Often times, people in well developed countries and with many privileges often forget to count their blessings and acknowledge that there are many others who do not have as much as they do. It often takes either experiencing it for themselves or seeing it with their own eyes to really acknowledge what they have and be thankful. Sometimes going through hardships allows us to see it for what it really is.

What is killing people is stress from how much energy they put into their jobs instead of God and humanity. Everyone puts tons of energy into their degrees and how many degrees they have, their job titles, and how much better they are than their neighbors. We have went from a serving nation to a consumer and taker nation.
Purposes will always come and go. Society needs a firm foundation: God. When you put your entire self worth on things of the world, your life will constantly be painful, lonely, and you’ll always feel lost no matter how much you accomplish. This is discussed in the book of Ecclesiastes.

Substances give you the feeling that they're helping you, they're hurting you, even on a small usage scale. Almost all of these people that use to get rid of a feeling are normally feeling that way because they're dependent on that substance. Most of us are using drugs and alcohol or pharmaceutical drugs, specifically because we eat a bad diet.

Think our culture has it all wrong.
Suffering is a big part of living.
Further we need to be grateful, thankful. Another is "to think of others more than ourselves."

I left Christianity within the last year and, finally, I have been able to start healing from the extreme trauma I went through, most of which I was victim to on a daily basis as a child by religious and physically abusive parents. A god that is willing to create an eternal fire and throw his child into it because that child didn’t “love him” (when the child has never met him just heard stories and threatened to believe and love OR ELSE) is the most abusive and narcissistic god a human could have conjured up. A LOVING god would create a heaven for all for peace, rehabilitation, love and unity. No human or animal would be left out; we have all suffered enough trauma in this existence not one deserves an eternity of torture. I would never treat any human being the way the barbaric writings describe (in many varying and inconsistent ways) the “storm god” Yahweh treated/treats humans. Being on this side I can’t unsee how disgusting the Bible is, and I have read and studied it many times for the majority of 30 years.

May I suggest a change of verbiage?
You say, “we’re not ‘evolved’ for that.”
The more accurate statement would be, “we’re not ‘designed’ for that.”
We do have a Creator/Designer. It’s okay - and preferable (IMHO) to acknowledge Him and how we are designed.
