When you fill the whole camera lens with the led you can make a first pixel measurement very accurately with the high speed camera because you can see the first bright line on the google screen clear as day when it appears. The led+photodiode is a very poor way to make a latency measurement in comparison because you can't see each individual pixel on the goggle screen to determine when it becomes bright.
Good comparison. There are a few more characteristics that really matter to whoop pilots as well. One is FOV (wider generally = better) and another is power consumption (I.e. affect on the flight time). Also min voltage is important if video can cut out before the battery is done. It would be interesting to see how the two systems compare on these points.
Remember that you also can’t fly with others running analog or other systems when flying walksnail without impacting the video quality of their feed. No issues with that from HDZero. I always fly whoops with friends so this was a significant reason for me.

I was wondering about that - the antennas on the goggles most people use will be circularly polarised, but whoops tend to use whip/dipole Antennas to save weight. That must surely cause deteriorated video? Wouldn’t it be worth an extra gram of weight to have a matching LHCP or RHCP antenna on the whoop?

Yes the HDZero cameras are always really nicely tuned from the factory for that. You can bump up the exposure on WS cameras to achieve the same effect.

I Love both of them, though really prefer the HDZero indoors, as it does much better in very low light, such as flying down a dark hall, or under a bed. But you just can't beat the better image quality or the onboard DVR of the Walksnail.

I have an Idea for a video on tuning PID: I am struggling with the question a bit, what to do tuning wise if the payload or the altitude of the take of point change. Would be so cool to have some info on that, what you can do to have some wiggle room in your tune or some easy adjustments, if you change the camera or go on vacation in higher altitudes 😊

I'm not sure how walksnail can be integrated into an analog race class. Plus has bidirectional transmission system like dji. Perhaps a separate racing class for hd walksnail needed.
If you're racing whoops competitively, an HD link will allow you to see your analogue competitors race past you for the win quite clearly 😳 Sadly the added weight will put you at quite a disadvantage.

A digital whoop would be great but I don’t want to own a second pair of goggles so I’ll just continue to use my Goggles V2 with an analog adapter to fly my whoop.
Well WS vtx is cheaper 2gram heavyer, I have both in moblite7 whoops....still think I prefere WS. Both googles are nicer than DJI face planted toilet seat.

I have recently been starting to fly again and have been looking at buying the avatar kit with the vrx you add on to my HDO2 goggles but was wondering how much extra latancy you would expect going the hdmi route to buying new goggles . As I still have ananloge drones I would like to be able to go the route of the VRX add on . Is it worth it .
They are very different technologies underneath. WS is h265 compression frame by frame. HDZero is a joint source and channel coding approach that work on a few lines at a time.
It's so easy to tell that the hd zero system was on the right. No comparison. Hd zero isn't even hd in my opinion. It might be digital but it only looks like good analog.

If flexibility is what you're looking for then the HDZero goggles is the best. It'll be the best at analog and HDZero and it'll also do AvatarHD with an added VRX so you can fly whatever quad you want.
Walksnail over HDZero any time. There’s a reason most people moved on from low-latency analog to higher latency digital. Image quality will be bigger factor than the few milliseconds saved. Plus, the way HDZero’s loses signal reminds me too much of the traumatizing analog static back in the day.

Especially considering that the max HDZero output power is 200mW whereas the Walksnail is 350mW, if I recall correctly.

All of our Utah Drone Racing league whoop races happen in a dark room w led gates and tunnels...low light performance is a big deal!

The hdzero nano light cam has a pretty bad lens, if you want better picture you need a nano v2 or a different lens.

I own hdzero, like it, but for my use and needs, it got destroyed now. As soon i got my WS vrx, i'll put hdzero aside.
Is the camera interchangeable? It looks that both have the same MIPI cable, not? So is it possible to pair the Walksnail camera with the HDZero VTX?
Great, so for the price of a RTF Mob6 I can nearly double its weight, add an easily breakable antenna and heap on a few additional ms of latency 👍🏽

Is there any downside from the HDZero Whoop Lite VTX compared to the HDZero Race V2 VTX? Its cheaper, lighter and smaller...
Walksnail video quality is more than “slightly ahead.” HDZero looks like upscaled 360p. The quality is dreadful.
Can you briefly outline how you powered the ws 1s lite, given that some have reported frying vtx with voltage spikes from a 5v feed. Thanks
I powered it from a 5V 2A BEC on a flywhoo GOKU Versatile F405 FC+ESC.

I was surprised to see how much better was WS image than HDZero image. Why would there be such a difference ?
For example the borders in the distance for HDZero are trembling. Same effect is noticable in the branches of the bushes.

Most tiny whoops will use a 3d printed mount which will weigh the same for both cameras.
