      Doesn't matter 1st world or 3rd world, gender discrimination exists everywhere. In some cases, men are discriminated and in some cases women are discriminated. Until there is self-realization, we cannot be better human beings. And I'm just trying to change my perspective for men and women and try my best to treat them equally. Is that a bad thing?

    I've been told alot of times by my teachers and mentors that I'm too ambitious and I will not get married because no man will have me under their roof. Today my career has been all about growth and I'm married. The modern man will love an ambitious woman for all she stands for. Dont ever let your ambition be disregarded because people believe you shouldn't be as successful as your counterpart. Thanks Chimmanda for speaking out!

      Except that from her speech, it's not her gender that made her do this speech so you don't need to be proud of being a woman because she did a great job. Blown away. She is articulate, well-mannered and also clear on the points. What a wonderful speech. Thank you.

      @Nanciefy 11 років тому +2

      ***** I'm sorry, what? Did you not understand anything that was said in this speech? What part of articulate and well-mannered offended you, exactly? The fact that I am praising and appreciating someone's ability to perform a speech. Or should I have commented on how she looks? I'm sorry, what did you expect ME to have replied and commented on this video? If you are implying I have said something sexist, I beg you to please show me exactly how I have managed to do that. And if you are right I will apologise. But as far as I am aware, I did not say anything that related towards her gender, and if it is my glee and appreciation towards her delivery that makes you think it is implied sexism, then you are wrong. I do not expect anyone to give an immaculate speech, man or woman, and my appreciation for that has nothing to do even remotely with gender, and your reaction towards that is completely unwarranted and unnecessary. But even if I had expected something (hey it's a ted talk - so it must be great!), it is still part of me as a person to appreciate and celebrate that (the specific thing I even stated in my comment). Thank you.

    • @jpage813
      @jpage813 11 років тому +6

      Nanciefy Amber wasn't saying that your comment implied sexism, she was saying that it implied racism- the first sentence anyway. Historically if a white person says that a black person is "articulate" and "well-mannered" or anything of that nature it comes off as "Wow! I didn't know you people could form complete sentences and conduct yourselves with the rest of society!" I'm sure that's not what you were going for, but I'm 99.9% sure that is why she was offended.

    • @Nanciefy
      @Nanciefy 11 років тому

      What does that say about someone's expectations of me? For someone to take what I said and assume it had something to do with that, to twist a compliment, what does that say about their expectation of me, and should I also be offended by that? I won't be. But it's ironic. Thanks for explaining anyway. It's definitely not what I was going for. I do find it funny how she had to find something bad in my comment though when just a few comments down there are people blatently saying obscene things. Either way, I am sorry for anyone who interpretted it that way.

    • @jpage813
      @jpage813 11 років тому +3

      Nanciefy You're welcome! I don't think you should be offended, because people just process information through the prism of their own experiences. So, if someone has experiences with something negative (like racism), things that could be misconstrued as such will more than likely be viewed that way.

    This reminds me of years ago, back in secondary school when a teacher divided my class into two groups for a quiz. Boys versus Girls and at the end of the quiz the girls won and he said to us (guys) "Why did you let the girls win?" I complained that he was being sexist by assuming that the girls won because we allowed them to win and he called me a woman and insulted me. Funny enough, everyone in class laughed at me, including the girls. Like Chimamanda expounds here, some African women aren't raised to be feminist, and I grew up believing everyone is equal, not just gender but race and sexuality. It is ok for a man to be feminist too, as John Stuart Mill supported the equality of women and the freedom of individuals.

    It seems weird to me that there are women in the comment section, claiming how they are anti-feminist. If it had not been for feminism, you wouldn't have the same rights as you have today. You are brushing off all of the actions done by feminist prior you, who dedicated their lives, to make sure that women got these rights that we have today. Just because you don't experience inequality in your every day life, doesn't mean that no one else doesn't either. What happened to empathy?
    And to the men sitting here complaining about how 'feminism is all about women', you clearly haven't listened to her speech before you commented. Feminism is about equality for all genders.
    Feminism is not flawless because it is made by humans, and humans aren't perfect, but it's the best thing that we have. The best hope for us, who don't want our dreams to be questioned because "Isn't that a man's job?" The best hope for us, who are questioned if we want "career or family?"
    I am a feminist. Not only because I want the same opportunities as my brother has; but because there are so many people out there, men and women, who should be free to be who they are and do what they want.

      ***** Okay let me ask you something: How often do you see male politicians being asked what brand of shoes they are wearing? I'm just wondering, that's all. For the record, I'm from Denmark, where we have a woman as our prime minister, and she is constantly scrutinized for the brands her clothes, shoes and bags are. All of which she pays for herself. Her opponent is a male whom has his expensive suits paid by the party, and has loads of scandals (His name is Lars Løkke... You can look him up if you don't believe me.) and everyone just seems to shrug it off?
      I don't know where you're from of course, but I'll take the liberty to quote an American newspaper, describing Hillary Clinton:
      "She was wearing a rose-colored blazer over a black top. The neckline sat low on her chest and had a subtle V-shape. The cleavage registered after only a quick glance. No scrunch-faced scrutiny was necessary." This article was from Washington Post in 2007, but I really don't hope you'll go as low as to tell me that it 'has changed' because I can easily find other articles to prove you wrong. I'm just wondering if you have ever heard anything like that with a man?
      Women are being scrutinized for what they wear in politics, like it was some fashion show. No wonder Angela Merkel wears the same thing in different colors every day.
      When Theresa May (UK) in 2012 made a mistake in timing of the deportation of Abu Qatada, the main focus wasn't on the mistake in itself, but on her age and her gender - or rather that the implication that she had a feeble unreliable woman's mind.
      You are right that there are female mayors, senators, business owners, governors and whatever more, but if you look at the per cent of them all, then the numbers are ridiculously small.
      That's not the sound of equality, that's the sound of my dreams crushing.

      ***** "there are no laws preventing you, or any other women from being in those fields, so what is the big deal?" I'm glad you ask, because it brings up a very important point: legal rights and cultural rights are not identical. Women have the legal right to walk down an out-of-the-way city street at night without getting raped, but they don't really have that right in practice (and sure, she can prosecute, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen). Men have the legal right to wear a dress without being harassed or even assaulted, but they don't really have that right in practice (again, he can take legal action, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen). Now these are extreme examples to illustrate the point, but the same concept applies. Men and women are treated completely differently by our culture, and probably more importantly: they are raised completely differently by our culture, so having the same legal rights doesn't mean having equal opportunities.

      1. But it is important! It is a problem when half the population has to be rated on appearance before they can get heard. If they can't be heard, how are they supposed to get anywhere? Some manage to of course, but if you look at it statistically, you can see how underrespresentrated women are in places of power. Representation is one of the key stones in democracy, especially if you want to deal with issues that aren't just "rich people's problems" as you like to call them.

      I'm sorry,but you clearly have no comprehension of what feminism really is.
      Feminism does focus more on women,mostly because women face social injustice far more than men these days,but it's also concerned about men,especially male rape victims. The name has 'fem' in it because it was started by women,but it does not under any circumstance help only women. Why do you think we're so against patriarchy? Because it was PATRIARCHY that teaches us that men want to have sex all the time and therefore actually enjoy rape,as gruesome as it sounds. That's what we're against.
      What you're trying to call me has a name and it's a misandrist,which I'm not. ''Feminazis'' as you'd like to call them are misandrists,not feminists.

    What i find funny is people commenting here that "feminists hate men" or "feminists want to be superior"... I mean, DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE VIDEO? wtf are you here for then? Haven't you got anything else to do besides hate on people fighting for equal rights?
    Ignorance doesn't give you free ticket to talk shit on the internet. Google feminism, please.
    And btw, keep in mind that feminism does favor men as well. Like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie beautifully mentions in the video, you are all expected to be the one with the money, or to be extremly tough, to an extent that anything as little as carrying your girlfriend/wife's purse on the mall can damage and put to risk your masculinity/sexuality (that was just an example okay)
    Also, yes men are raped. But they are never blamed for it. "What were you thinking? Walking alone at that time of the night in a deserted street? You certainly wanted to get raped, (insert male name here)." THAT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU HEAR, although the other way around is pretty common.
    Also, if men are raped, the shame in assuming it is SO HUGE that most keep it a secret. It shouldn't be, since it wasn't the victim's fault. Again, patriarchy implies that men being raped is shameful. "Why should he admit it, if it probably damaged his masculinity, anyway?"
    Can you see where I'm getting at?
    So PLEASE PLEASE people, get to know a movement before judging it.

      Here's an interesting thing I read just today in the book I mentioned: She says that many women who have clearly and obviously benefitted directly from the feminist movement will almost invariably distance themsleves from it, and trash feminism. I feel sad about the way women and men are afraid to say they are feminists. Chimamanda says, "a world of happier men, and happier women who are truer to themselves". Please, don't accuse all feminists of hating men. Focus on the love and positivity of wanting equality for men and women! I want a world where men can cry without being called "gay" and where women can ask for fairer pay without being called feminists in a negative way. Let us strive towards this equalism, to become better human beings. Much love, Morgan.

    After watching this talk, I felt a sense of pride. The events she cites where gender inequality is obvious are things I can't relate to, despite being a girl. Looking back at how I was raised, I felt grateful to my parents. They taught my brother and I differently; they raised us equally. My brother isn't pushed to "man up", nor am I pushed to get married. I was raised in a house where there was no such thing as gender roles. If only the rest of the world would raise the next generation like that, too.
