Well if the electric rates go up, it will obviously impact everybody, not just the charging of EVs. I live in a 1 bedroom and my energy bill for the month of February was up 20% though I have minimal energy usage (I don't use a heater). The report/discussion/debate media should be having is why there 0 competition to PG&E in most of California. It has been bailed out multiple times by the state. EVs don't need oil changes, timing belts/chains, serpentine belts, spark plugs, water pumps, various gasket replacements, fluid replacements, torque converter or clutch replacements, smog checks, etc etc. And the notion that you would have to replace the EV battery is ridiculous. Yes, it might not hold as much of a charge as it used to, but that doesn't mean it needs to be replaced.

Actually I'm on PG&E EV Rate. My off peak rate is 34.5 cents per kwh wich equates to 10 cents per mole for my 2023 Tesla Model S Plaid. Several hybrids get over 50 mpg. Current gas price in my area of Northern California is $4.50 per gallon. At 50 mpg the cost per mile is 9 cents per kwh. The Camry Hybrid and Prius along with several others get better than 50 mpg. By the way when I purchased my first Tesla in 2014 the off peak price was 12.7 cents per kwh. Peak EV rate is now over 60 cents per kwh in the summer.

When I own a business, and something goes out in my business, shouldn’t I have saved over the years to have a little savings, to fix the equipment myself or should I jack up the prices and make the consumers pay?
Because I thought I was supposed to save my money and invest back into my business. I didn’t know I should just rip off the consumer and expect for them to pay for the investment in my business…👀

The PG&E EV off-peak charging plan is now $.34578/KWH. My Tesla M3/LR averaged 4.0 miles per KWH. For every 100 miles driven, I used approx. 25 KWH x $0.34578 = $8.6445. Now, if you drive a hybrid averaging 47 MPG, you use 2.12 gallons of gas at $4.35/gal = $9.25. The EV saves $0.61 in this equation. My Tesla was also $15K more than the hybrid, and it costs $900 more a year to insure. It's not more cost-effective to drive an EV people; it's just fun to drive. I drive 22K miles a year. It's not about how much I can save at the pump on each fill-up, it's how much can I save over the entire year. If my job allowed me to charge for free, I would drive EV forever.

I charge my Tesla at my San Francisco home for a PGE cost of $0.50 per kWh. This PGE electricity costs more than a super charger. Fortunately, I also have a 9 kw Solar panel system (costing ~$21K after tax credit) on my roof and in cloudy San Francisco I estimate that I will get about 10,000 kwh per year. So all my electric costs including charging my Tesla are covered and the return on investment per year is 25%.

What's tearing up the roads in MIchigan is snow and ice along with 80 ton sand trucks. But we need to go electric.

    San Jose Electricity rate is $0.85 per k/W (PG&E delivery + SJCE generation) @ peak and $.68 per k/W (PG&E + SJCE) @ off-peak. If I drive 300 miles in a Mazda CX5 @ 30MPG, it will cost ~$42.5 with gas @ $4.25. It will cost ~ $53 in my Bolt EUV to drive the same miles if I only charge during off-peak. ...................... 300 /3.8 kW/h = 78.9 kW x .68 = $53.65.

Rising utility rates affect more than just EVs. They accelerate _overall inflation_ because the cost of operating a business (of all types) goes up and those costs get passed on to the consumer.
For homeowners and even businesses though, it's all the more reason to get rooftop solar. Solar & EV combination will recoup capital cost of the solar panels even faster than normal.

Something like a Bolt EV would easily cost as much, and that's at a lower rate price. If you charge at higher on-peak price, you can pay double the amount to charge a Bolt.
