Wife has a three year contract in Auckland (never lived in a big city) working on biking/walking infrastructure. This is our second time at trying to immigrate to NZ. I visited about 12 years ago and fell in love. Great people, great country.
Moved to NZ (South Island) from the UK nearly 10 years ago.....best move ever. Beautiful country, awesome friendly people, no traffic, less population, good all round climate, greatest rugby team in the world ...wouldn't want to live anywhere else :-)
Speaking of the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand... During the Korean War, the Americans and Canadians were often left to wonder whether the Aussies and Kiwis were more serious about fighting each other than fighting the Chinese and North Koreans, because of the style of pranks they were pulling on each other. The rivalry isn't just about rugby, it is about literally everything. But heaven help any outsider that thinks they can join in, because it is a sibling rivalry, and family will always have each other's back
Cracks me up when outsiders call our pies "meat pies". We're so big on "meat pies" that we just simply call them pies. And the other type of pie is a desert pie, or fruit pie, or apple pie.
It sounds like he was in New Zealand quite a long time ago; I mean decades ago. Pretty much everyone has broadband, and as for not having carpets? That's the first time I've heard that one!
+Cellar Door I dislike when you say 'government is rolling out'. ...this means they are offering services that should be private sector. How hard hit are you by taxes?
sam billings I also have unlimited broadband. As far as speed is concerned, I can't really say, not being able to compare, but being at the bottom of the Southern Hemisphere, I would expect the internet to be pretty slow by international standards, much like Australia.
Honestly I think I would prefer New Zealand over the USA not just for its aesthetics and culture but for the levels of liberty and freedom that New Zealanders enjoy.
I've lived in about 10 houses throughout nz and only 1 had wooden floors. And it was carpet in the bedrooms anyway. I've only seen like 5 houses throughout my lifetime with all wooden floors.
Once me and my husband drove Queenstown to Nelson. It took us the whole day with only a few quick stops. (I think it would take at least a few days to get to the top of the north island from the bottom of the south island)
Interesting about the internet cafe part. I live in Christchurch (NZ's 2nd largest city) and don't know of any internet cafes, everyone has internet in their homes here.
James Skilton No, Christchurch is around 380,000 whereas Wellington is around 398,000. Wellington is still a hub of activity as it is the centre of New Zealand both literally and politically.
reg shovelworth Mate its 2016. Everyone has internet in their homes, I havnt exactly been on the lookout for an internet cafe, nor would i ever want to go to one.
Munch No Wellington City has a smaller population than Christchurch City. However, the Wellington region is bigger, but you can't compare that to Christchurch City.
aotearoa... Wellington north island. Does not take 7hours north to south.... it's longer trust me Invercargill to whangarei is over 24 drive... internet cafes are in the main cities... in Christchurch is hard to find due to mother nature... any way mass respect for trying to explain this beautiful country... #nz #allblacks #silverfern #kiwi
Come to Auckland cause we got a sky tower n thts probs the besr play out of NZ, n us Maoris say churr, yo n our home is called whare marie in English is house area/ground
In terms of housing I think it's very different. Flats (Appartments) aren't all that common, townhouses or units are more common than flats. Houses are typically smaller in New Zealand than in the United States - however the land the house is on will be a lot larger than the U. S. Most houses have large back yards where children generally play and families will gather rather than the front yard. We also have fences. Between the road and a house it will be private unlike in American suburbs. So from the road you generally can't see into the house or the front yard.
Auckland is the north island and wellington is the south island!?!?!? they're on the same island! There are three main islands - North, South, and Stewart Island. Wellington is the capital and at the bottom of the North Island, almost sitting in the middle of the entire country. And yes, Auckland is flat-ish (there are volcanoes all around), but Wellington is the earthquake capital so it's hill again hill with the urban and residential areas in the valleys.
mia smith Wellington is. Christchurch had two large earthquakes recently that were very damaging but were also very unexpected (and also didn't occur in Christchurch but further down the island), and it's understood that historically such earthquakes occur far apart for that area. Wellington, however, has been known as an earthquake zone (and actually sits on the plate boundary and active fault line) and the nation has been anticipating the "big one" in Wellington for decades. All of Wellington's infrastructure has been influenced by preparing for large earthquakes, unlike Christchurch which had nothing of the sort and is why it suffered the damage it did during its earthquakes. The two large earthquake risks to the country - those that will be the largest and most destructive, are anticipated to occur along the southern alps in the South Island (the rarer occurring of the two) and Wellington - the only one of the two events that will occur within a urban area.
Awesome review mate, you pretty much nailed it all, I still say "Far out!", even living in Perth, Aussies have taken on some of our slang, and try to make out its theirs, just like Pharlap and Pavlova. 😉😊
+Hetcho_ well you would have seen another because the only netcafe in mt albert has a next cafe on the right and the left either way you drive down by the mt albert trainstation v8 then theres net3 and anothet netcafe and one by the burger wisconsin in about a 100 m radius.
i've only lived in australia and NZ and the part about the ice cream - yes for sure lol applies to chocolate too however only if it's made from NZ milk. Cadbury used to taste good and when i moved to aus their version of dairy milk was gross. unfortunately cadbury moved its production to aus and now cadbury doesnt taste good. also two thirds of NZ waterways are polluted (yes that 100% pure ad is a lie) so be careful which beaches you go to!

Wellington is at the bottom of the North Island. It's about 8 hours from Wellington to Auckland. The bottom of the South is Invercargill. google map it.
Rasheem Reid no, it's just everyone seems to want the same jobs. there's a huge shortage of people in some jobs and too many people wanting to do other jobs.
Just a minor point, it would take about 16 hours to travel the length of nz if there was a straight line from the top to the bottom, and you could travel 100km/hour the whole way :) We'r e small, but not that small ;)
if you have a skill that is desired in this country and if you do some networking and able to claim employment before you step on the land, then your usa $10,000 shall more than cover you till your paycheck
Not really like US...tbh. Their murder rate is significantly less than ours. Kids are still walking home barefoot from school all over. Their energy use is great. They utilize natural resources for energy. They recycle EVERYWHERE. Food is less altered than ours (if you're not shopping at pak n save). The reason they have more Internet cafes is because they're connection is very weak, for the most part, and they need that bigger server. People are not as overweight as they are in America. It's basically only Subway, McDonald's, KFC, and a few Pizza Hut. Other than that there isn't really any American fast food. (Maybe a couple Red Burrito's, too.) Petrol is also sold by the Liter, not the gallon. The houses are a lot more focused on natural light than American homes. Their UV rays are some of the harshest in the world, but its still warm. There are major differences if you think about it. The similar value that you find is that all humans just want to be happy and live a quality life.
That's not true that the north island has no mountains mt ruapehu, mt egmont, mt maunganui, mt Victoria, and also the north island isn't tropical, most parts are but Auckland and Wellington aren't tropical
I really love these interview type things, there are alot of people in the work that think we're an island off Auzzy, but it's good to see us being depicted as our own country. But, we hardly say far out :P
I loved my visit to NZ although is was too short! In th at sort time I really fell for he place and would love the opportunity to live there, even if only for a short while.
Thanks for the comments. Really interesting to see how others see us, so to speak. You're very much "on the nail" with the hammer. Back in 2005 myself and a friend (he was originally from the States - living here for 40+ years) went on a trip across the USA. Mainly visiting relatives there, and doing some excellent tourist stops. Travelled across 25 States about 6500 miles. One thing I loved was the interstate Freeways. Guaranteed 2 lanes. You are correct with our roads here, Hilly & Curvy. Makes trying to get somewhere fast impossible. But pretty much could draw same comparisons. The trip we had was so long I ended up authoring a 3 DVD set of the trip. Looking forward to going back....... Sounds like you spent a fair bit of time here?
NZ has one of the highest ice cream consumption rates in the world. Its ice cream is very good- but is it the best in the world? How was that determined? Have you heard of Italy? He has fallen for kiwi patriotic hard sell which all foreigners endure. Beautiful country, friendly people, but best in the world statements (except rugby) are best left to parochial mindset of those who have never been outside NZ.
lol Australia/New Zealand always going head to head haha. Rugby we (New Zealand) win hands down. cricket test matches they win and we 50/50 on T20's etc. We do have a healthy competition with the Aussies... not bad considering we have a tiny population compated to them.
As a kiwi, I enjoyed this but he does make some strange observations e.g. Internet cafes. Firstly, the internet is everywhere in NZ and we have the worlds fastest cellular networks. It is literally not something id think of raising in an interview explaining what makes NZ unique.
I'm binge watching New Zealand videos just because i'm a Kiwi x'D
lol same, saw one in my recommendations, nek minnut...
Earl That trend is so old, omg ;o;
On my eve of moving from the US to NZ. Binge watching cuz I am like a kid on xmass eve!! (I am 43 and can hardly sleep)
kevin richards
Cool. Which part of the country are you heading to?
Wife has a three year contract in Auckland (never lived in a big city) working on biking/walking infrastructure. This is our second time at trying to immigrate to NZ. I visited about 12 years ago and fell in love. Great people, great country.
'New Zealand is very westernised.' Best comment ever. I didn't realise people thought we weren't ...
People may think he is exaggerating when he says that it'll be sunny, and then 30 minutes later pouring with rain. It's true.
Moved to NZ (South Island) from the UK nearly 10 years ago.....best move ever. Beautiful country, awesome friendly people, no traffic, less population, good all round climate, greatest rugby team in the world ...wouldn't want to live anywhere else :-)
+Yorkie in NZ come to auckland theres heaps of traffic.
+Tyler Jones Auckland traffic is nothing compare to the UK.
Angeline Dewet didn't think about that one xD
so cool to have you here brother! Thanks for the cool comment! 👍👍👍
Moving to the North Island in a few days. Can't wait to shake the states!
We are more English than American actually
Yeah, definitely.
But we're slowly transitioning to Americanism
Cyclopgamingfreaks sadly
😂
Speaking of the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand... During the Korean War, the Americans and Canadians were often left to wonder whether the Aussies and Kiwis were more serious about fighting each other than fighting the Chinese and North Koreans, because of the style of pranks they were pulling on each other.

So true man I'm New Zealander and we don't hate Aussie it's just a friendly rivalry
Cracks me up when outsiders call our pies "meat pies". We're so big on "meat pies" that we just simply call them pies. And the other type of pie is a desert pie, or fruit pie, or apple pie.
no kid their just meat pies.
Lol
+Bjorg Rosenquist No, come to New Zealand and we just call them pies.
+Anton Nzl yeah haha
+Anton Nzl yeah, in the states a pie is mainly a dessert. Here it's a savoury thing
It sounds like he was in New Zealand quite a long time ago; I mean decades ago. Pretty much everyone has broadband, and as for not having carpets? That's the first time I've heard that one!
Where I live, only our living rooms have carpet, the rest is wooden. Makes things colder and cleaner
Sounds like he said 11yrs ago...which was a while ago! Back when I was still on dial-up haha
+TMCP How good are the speeds there. Also is internet unlimited or are there any caps?
+Cellar Door I dislike when you say 'government is rolling out'. ...this means they are offering services that should be private sector. How hard hit are you by taxes?
sam billings I also have unlimited broadband. As far as speed is concerned, I can't really say, not being able to compare, but being at the bottom of the Southern Hemisphere, I would expect the internet to be pretty slow by international standards, much like Australia.
this guy sounds like hes trying to sell new zealand to someone
To his grandma
did a great job. might just stay here
80% of houses are wooden floor?? I live in new zealand and most houses are carpet unless its an older house.
can you rent like aparment in there
***** ah ok
haha
Ours is Marble or carpet 😂
Honestly I think I would prefer New Zealand over the USA not just for its aesthetics and culture but for the levels of liberty and freedom that New Zealanders enjoy.
The U.S people are so nice that come here
I will never forget them!!!
Um...Wellington is in the North Island...clearly not very observant. Also kilometers are a different unit of measurement not just a different name.
Haha when he mentioned Wellington I was like "Yo hold on a minute".
Actually its more of a sibling rivalry between us and Aussie
you cant get shot at the movies or the mall in nz
HAVE FKN COMMON SENSE
yes you "can"
you can get shot anywhere you muppet
The indigenous and native people co exist and are well celebrated acknowledged as a culture. Which is probably not the case in the U.S
as a NZer I found this hilarious... but he did make a pretty good stab at it ... on ya mate ;)
i havent heard anyone say far out in a very very long time
lol ikr
+Allen Carbon same and i am from NZ
Same
+Allen Carbon Far out bro where you from come to Welly
Ash Meredith I'm in Newtown.
Noone says far out. Bro.
we do use the term "far out" a lot though.
Also, their money is waterproof :D
I've lived in about 10 houses throughout nz and only 1 had wooden floors. And it was carpet in the bedrooms anyway. I've only seen like 5 houses throughout my lifetime with all wooden floors.
North island , Mount Rupehu , Tongariro, Taranaki, Maungatautari ,Urewera, Hikurangi, Mamaku , Kaimai rangers , all big mountains of the northisland.
Once me and my husband drove Queenstown to Nelson. It took us the whole day with only a few quick stops. (I think it would take at least a few days to get to the top of the north island from the bottom of the south island)
“4 seasons in one day” hahahahaha nothing like Auckland’s bipolar weather
Interesting about the internet cafe part. I live in Christchurch (NZ's 2nd largest city) and don't know of any internet cafes, everyone has internet in their homes here.
Wellington is larger now because people moved out after the earthquakes

in new zealand you dont drive on the other side of the road. In america you drive in the oppisite of the road
lol that's what I was thinking
Not really since the world majority drives on the right
Um yeah America to you is the whole world
+Alex Hull XD
+Mungo Jerry ae? I thought the majority of the world drives on the left side.
I so want to go to New Zealand!!
+Tiffany Flavell It's not as good as you think it is. It is summer right now and it is either boiling hot or freezing cold, not warm.
Its summer so its so hot but it won't stop raining.
Come to Auckland cause we got a sky tower n thts probs the besr play out of NZ, n us Maoris say churr, yo n our home is called whare marie in English is house area/ground
Best place ever i ment
+Logan Andrew Awesome haha one day I hope to visit New Zealand 😊
in the 90s NZ had already surpassed US in standard of living
In terms of housing I think it's very different. Flats (Appartments) aren't all that common, townhouses or units are more common than flats. +Damon242 what about the West island ???? i think they call it Australia !!!
+Damon242 BUT everyone talks as if Jafa's are from a different country why wouldn't an outsider think that
chtirstchurch is earthquake capital
mia smith Wellington is. Christchurch had two large earthquakes recently that were very damaging but were also very unexpected (and also didn't occur in Christchurch but further down the island), and it's understood that historically such earthquakes occur far apart for that area.

@2:48 "Aww wish I could have one right now" haha funniest thing, gotta love our pies!
im from new zealand and sir you are a great man
Awesome review mate, you pretty much nailed it all, I still say "Far out!", even living in Perth, Aussies have taken on some of our slang, and try to make out its theirs, just like Pharlap and Pavlova. 😉😊
Clearly this guy has not been to NY or Philly lol... there are corner stores and Internet cafes everywhere
ha ha I loved the way he described our use of the expression "far out" and our meat pies
I've only seen 2 internet cafes in new Zealand
I've seen one, In mt albert in aukland.
No, you I'm willing to bet you have seen more you just didn't realise that that store was a netcafe , I know of 27 internet cafes in cbd alone.
+Hetcho_ well you would have seen another because the only netcafe in mt albert has a next cafe on the right and the left either way you drive down by the mt albert trainstation v8 then theres net3 and anothet netcafe and one by the burger wisconsin in about a 100 m radius.
+Bjorg Rosenquist Yeah ive seen Net3.
+Hetcho_ literally 4 stores up theres a netcafr video easy way and then one a store from the pizza hut and a third 3 stores down by the tab
Most houses have carpet...
+xXxMrOliverxXx hes a missionary. So hes seen a lot of housing homes where they have no carpets.
that makes sense, thanks ^_^
carpet is evil ...
Come to Hawks bay that's the best part of New Zealand
😝😝😝😝fuuuck yeeeeeah my brooottthheeerrrrrrrrrrrr... Hawke's Bay all the way.
Wat about Taranaki
+Tom McLean (Bunny-flop) might be the best place to get involved in the mongrel mob, but other than that, christchurch is the best
Hawke's Bay fuckin' aye.
Nah Whakatane, Ohope is better.
kilometers is the metric system which all the world uses except backward countries use miles.
you should mention that our petrol cost way too much.
Went to pokeno ice cream shop today. My fav ice cream place !! Hands down :)
I live in New Zealand and I dont think I have ever been in a house with only wooden floors. It depends who you are and where you are living I guess.
ICE CREAM? MORE SHEEPS THAN PEOPLE?! *MOVES TO NEE ZEALAND* I LOVE NZ! IT'S MY DREAM COUNTRY.
Its not that great... We dont get cool things here.
And chocolate like lots of chocolate
DONT MOVE TO NEE ZEALAND
+Min Chan Lee Stay Away from Auckland that's all. :)
I've been living in NZ for 12 years now and NEVER heard anyone use the term "Far Out"
This reminds me of a clip for the office.
How much did it cost to expat? Meaning - how much did you have to pay for your freedom? I heard it's about $4k each person.
the convenience store thing is pretty normal.. same here in canada
i've only lived in australia and NZ and the part about the ice cream - yes for sure lol applies to chocolate too however only if it's made from NZ milk.
I live in New Zealand and Iv only seen 1 internet cafe but it shut down because no one went there
far out
Internet cafe's still exist but the introduction of wireless hotspots have seem them decline in recent years but you can still find them and the gaming rooms still exist if you know where to find them. Ward Street, Garden Place and Victoria street in Hamilton still has them. Corner diaries yep, no carpet for sure, especialy in areas that renovate villas etc. And the Pokeno ice creams are still too big to eat in one trip.
+Tony Cassidy Yep, guessed he was living there - spreading the word and attempting to reduce the in-breeding
I'm glad you appreciate New Zealand so much
I soooo miss the clothes!!! So cheap in america!!!
Australian Wallabies lol 🤣but it's all good; ,Aussies are consider a big brother to NZ and fierce rivals in sports, but brothers in arms.
Very good speaker. Structured and a lot of information.
Pretty good analogy but we do have a couple.of mountains in the North island over 8000 ft
wellington is at the bottom of the North Island?
Expat kiwi binge watching this because I’m homesick
Wellington is at the bottom of the North Island. It's about 8 hours from Wellington to Auckland. The bottom of the South is Invercargill. google map it.
We have carpet...I don't know anyone with only wooden floors. Maybe in the kitchen and bathrooms but...
Damn he probably still thinking about that pie😂
is the internet slow in NZ?
+Rasheem Reid not really, it depend weather or not you have broadband or ultrafast.
+Estella Riley which one is faster?
Rasheem Reid ultrafast is faster. that's why it's full name is ultrafast broadband
+Estella Riley oh kool I didn't know Ultra was a shorten for its name....I've heard people say there are no jobs in NZ..is that true?
Rasheem Reid no, it's just everyone seems to want the same jobs. there's a huge shortage of people in some jobs and too many people wanting to do other jobs.
Wellington is in the North Island but good LOTR analogy. North Island has some amazing forests, Red Wood forest in Rotorua is stunning.
No way near as good as the South Island tho
I like this man's idea of New Zealand, it's pretty cool! But yes, he also has generalized a lot
Auckland has mountains...maybe not as big but there was one right near where I lived.
+Becca Edwardz LOL
South Island, Wellington XD This guy better be joking 😂😂😂
5 years later and we still have bipolar weather 😂😂
Duuude. The weather part is so true omg.
Just a minor point, it would take about 16 hours to travel the length of nz if there was a straight line from the top to the bottom, and you could travel 100km/hour the whole way :) We'r e small, but not that small ;)
+Rachel Fisken You need to date more, i'm sure you'll find some that are at least regular sized
how hard is it to afford to live there. I'm an american with only about 10k USD.
Honestly saying, in that budget you could easily afford to dream living in NZ..
If you have that much, then don't live in Auckland. House prices there are 1 million NZD plus
if you have a skill that is desired in this country and if you do some networking and able to claim employment before you step on the land, then your usa $10,000 shall more than cover you till your paycheck
best description of nz in a long time

Sheep numbers are at about 30 mil but back in the 60’s, it was up to around 65 Mil. :-)
New Zealand drives on the same side of the road as the UK.

personal reasons

New Zealand is wonderful ,the Netherlands is nice too . Thailand is a good option too
nz is not like America at all, not one bit. more like beautiful Canada, kia ora kiwis
lol 4 seasons in one day, pretty much sums us up at new Zealand xD
This is one of the most useful chats on this topic. I really appreciate taking the time.
did he just say wellington was in the south island
if he did say that he should shut up
I live in New Zealand its cool as
#FaZeUp
New Zealand all the way best country
New Zealand all the way best country.
+Harry Kirkman (elmorocks199) it's sweet as, bro.
Yes! pokeno ice cream is legendary.

My friend lives in New Zealand
