    What I love about New Zealand is that when you come home from school or work you can relax at the beach, go skateboarding with your mates and have a BBQ with your family. But compared to Sweden where I live. When you come home you grab your computer/iPad and nothing more really.

Why didn't they occupy beautiful fertile Iceland, right above them just a short distant away, with hardly any people there? Why is Australia, a giant bountiful resourceful continent in Asia-Pacific region, only a few hundred miles away from South-East Asia had no Asian-Pacific Islanders historically inhabiting when Anglo pirates, some 20,000 miles away from jolly old England, sailed half way around the world and occupied in late 18th century? I’d say the political division has grown here but still is nothing like the U.S.
    As I see it the States seems to be ground zero for most things and that includes culturally, things/trends that happen in the States usually make their way here eventually but usually in a watered down version particularly politically because New Zealanders are typically apathetic about politics and what the government of the time gets up to, we privately might be wound up about something but it rarely makes much of an eruption on the public sphere which in some respects and some instances is bad because we get governments like to one that’s in at the moment that quietly squirrel away in the background removing things like free speech moving us from what’s already a pretty socialistic country even further left towards more full blown socialism. Not forgetting our dear leader Adern is a socialist and is getting us further and further entangled in globalisation removing our countries autonomy. By the way National isn’t really a right wing party, it’s left of centre and has been for sometime but they still not as extreme as Labour or the Greens.
    Sorry about the rant but one has to let it out now and then, it’s quite cathartic.

    I emigrated from the USA to New Zealand in 1992, and expect to end my life there.
    Kiwis are more like North Americans than they appreciate. Californians have told me that New Zealand reminds them of what California was like 50-60 years ago, and I tend to agree.
    New Zealand is an honest democracy, and a multi-racial society relatively free of identity politics. Behind closed doors, the two major parties are quite pragmatic in their orientation.
    New Zealand is a very low key ally of the USA, so low key that much of the world treats New Zealanders as citizens of a non-aligned nation.
    The public sector is relatively free of corruption, but is vulnerable to pressure from business interests, as is the case everywhere else.
    Problems:
    * In 2016, New Zealand's GDP per capita, restated in US$, was only 69% of the comparable value for the USA, and the lowest among the 6 first world English speaking countries;
    * Housing in the main cities, and in the more desirable rural towns, is quite dear. In much of the USA, housing is quite inexpensive;
    * Many jobs do not pay very well;
    * A diversified portfolio requires investing in Australian and American securities. The resulting exchange risk cannot be avoided;
    * The income tax is quite simple, esp. if one is not a business owner and owns no foreign securities. If you don't have children under 18, the income tax is also harsh, with income taxed from the first dollar.
    * The tax treatment of foreign equities and unit trusts is especially harsh. If you own a house in New Zealand, or rent one year-round, you will owe some income tax if you live in New Zealand more than 6 weeks out of the tax year;
    * It is not unusual in New Zealand for people to hold management positions not because they are competent, but because they were the least bad of a very weak bunch of applicants, or were the only applicant;
    * The system of socialised medicine does not cover many state of the art treatments, and rations access to the treatments that system does offer, via waiting lists. Immediate access to quality health care requires private health insurance

    Pro tip : Some South & East Auckland Suburbs crime rate are high, make sure your car is always locked and take every thing on you like phones, wallet etc, and at least parked in open areas where people can see your car but other than that don't judge every Polynesian or what ever culture by their looks or how they wear, everyone has different mind sets & its usually friendly on how you approach.

      Likewise, I am also interested, as I have long understood it is very hard to become a citizen of NZ. You can be welcomed as a visitor for 90 days, maybe 6 months, but then you have to leave unless you own some NZ real estate or have some job/business that is deemed cannot be done by a native Kiwi. Also would like more commentary on the basic costs of living in NZ vs. USA or elsewhere. I cannot believe it would be double what it costs to live monthly in the USA.

    Fascinating.
    I'm a Brit who lives in the US (Florida to be exact). The main differences are:
    -The weather: Very long, hot summers and warm winters in FL. Much better than the never ending cloudiness of the UK.
    -Education: The system is COMPLETELY different. There's too much to explain here, but basically, the US system focus on breadth instead of depth. School finishes at 18 instead of 16, sixth form doesn't exist, and one has to do general education subjects (such as maths and english)at uni.
    -The people: people over here are very open and helpful, especially when talking about customer service. In England, people are wayyy more reserved.
    -The infastructure: Down here in FL, everything is very spread out. You NEED a car to get anywhere, especially in the summer.

    Im a born and bred kiwi for many generations, I love our country and most of the people in it. living in the north im into outdoor activities as both coasts are close with native bush and farmland in beween, what i don't like or are worried about is our rapid expanding population rate as we are building more and more polution is generated. our native animals flora and fauna are very fragile as NZ has no native land mammals and all mammals here today are introduced and can quicky become pest species as for thousands of years New Zealands segrigation from other animals means our natives have no defence against these new species. For example the trees are very slow growing and cant heal quickly meaning a simple deer or goat scratching on a plant can cause it to rot, killing the plant that may be1000s of years old, the habbitat it was for others and will take just as long to come back. Kauri roots can be effected just by walking to close to the tree and toheroa shellfish are killed accidentally every day by the thousands simply by driving on the beaches by people un-awares.I love to share and show off our country to visitors, but please, please respect it and follow the given rules for the health and safety of yourselves and the country.Our land of the long white cloud is getting sicker every day as the green changes grey and the crisp untamed and untouched air is being replaced with smog.I persoally believe it is already to late and one day NZ will just be a massive bustle of people and their businesses fighting and trying to control the economy for the riches of personal gains and power like many other countries today.Let's look after the few raw pockets of natural, unruled land and life so at least some others have a chance to witness her amazing beauty matched by none as Aotearoa is a class of its own and the unique beauty can't be witnessed anywhere else known to man.

    Hi, Dani. I am indeed an American who's been tossing around the idea of moving to New Zealand (I'm from near Chicago). I wanted to ask about health care in New Zealand. I understand from Wikipedia that the country has a sort of mix of private and public systems. Are most New Zealanders generally happy with that system? What is there to know about health care in NZ apart from what's on Wikipedia?

    • @DaniWatt
      @DaniWatt  7 років тому +2

      Hey Dylan, that's awesome I love Chicago! We have a great health care system here in NZ. I'm no expert but I could suggest going onto the ministry health website to find out more. :)

      Good idea. Thanks.

    • @campodetrigo1
      @campodetrigo1 6 років тому +4

      No, most NZers are not happy with the system! As an American coming here you will need a 2 year visa to qualify for health care. If shorter than that you will need private insurance. Private is the way to go as you will be seen in a timely manner and the specialists will love you because your insurance company pays up front. There is a shortage of GPs in the country so it is hard to get on with a regular clinic. Visits to the GP will generally be cheaper than any co-pay that you have in the US though so... if you don't mind a 4 month wait to see a specialist, things are good with the private system. Medications are subsidized though which is great as you don't have to be rich to afford prescription medications.

    • @LaraLandX

      I'll respectfully disagree sir. I'm a Kiwi living here all my life. We do have waiting lists for some things, but if it's life threatening (like a heart attack) you'll be seen immediately and get excellent treatment. Even for things you have to wait for in my life I've been looked after well. Some of the best maternity care too. I do not waste my money on insurance, my taxes pay for my health care and for my family.

    • @LaraLandX
      @LaraLandX 6 років тому

I live in Wellington, I can tell you that its more of a city than Christchurch, we have a museum (been there so many times, could be interesting for you), good walks, its not hot but can have nice weather. Finding a job really depends on if you want a casual job or one you're qualified for. Sorry this probably wasn't helpful, but I like Wellington

    By the way I live in New Zealand and it is definitely not that safe as you think. Dairy robberies are running rampant also we have had lots of people who have had cars broken into I know and happened to me once or friends have been pick-pocketed.

    Hi Dani. I'm an American living in NZ (for 18 years). I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with much of this. The people here are really not that friendly, especially to residents from other countries. If you are a tourist, great. You get the full on over the top friendliness. If you are living here (and now directly competing with the Zilders) then wow, it's an entirely different kettle of fish. The crime rate is very high here. NZ has the highest rate of auto theft in the world and has the third highest rate of rape per capita in the world. The second highest rate of burglary per capita, and has shocking domestic violence and assaults, some of the worst in the world. Together with our Aussie neighbors, we have the highest Meth use in the world. There are many areas in this country you can't even go near without being totally hassled by gang members or druggies. So, I'm not sure what NZ you live in, but it isn't the same one I do. Sure, the general feeling at the tourist spots is laid back, but the society in the urban centers of Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland needs some serious upgrades. I first visited this country back in 1988, and it was totally different. I've seen it change radically in the last 15 years. There is way more inequality now which is causing a breakdown in the old "Kiwi values". The rich are getting arrogant, insular, and presumptuous, just like the rich in America, Australia, or Europe. The poor are getting poorer, more angry, and desperate. The National government has shipped all the middle class jobs overseas, and has imported tens if not hundreds of thousands of middle class immigrants from India, China, wherever. Many of these people can't find work in their chosen professional fields and end up driving taxi cabs or working at petrol stations. I don't know, but I spend half of the year in US and half of it here, and I find the lifestyle there to be better than it was when I was growing up and the lifestyle here is worse than it was when I got here... It is very expensive here as well, with many goods and service providers ripping you off because they can. There is also a very strong "you don't belong" attitude that ends up hurting the businesses here. I can't tell you how many times my accent has in turn given me terrible service, extreme pricing, and a general "different" provision than if I was speaking Zilder. On the positive side, NZ has affordable health care, but you still need private insurance. Still, way better value than US. Also, the tax rates on property are lower (but rising) and of course, the landscape is simply beautiful and the interior areas are virtually unspoiled (but being sold off to the highest bidder). NZ has its challenges, definitely. If you are wealthy enough to be financially retired, and just need to work to keep sane, it's a good place. But, still, you have to be careful not to get sucked into the violent sub-culture that is everywhere and growing every year. I still live here, but would not recommend the country to a young person from an OECD country who wants out. They would have a very hard time. The unemployment rate is WAY higher than reported as many have to take two or three "part time" jobs just to make ends meet. Yes, this is also a problem in the US, so it is becoming worldwide. The safety net in NZ is also better than the US (as the US for all intents and purposes has none). Yet, this has also eroded over time with the National led government. Homelessness is now a reality here. I know as I volunteer at a shelter as a cook and server. There are even good people, who are just down and out financially, are now living in their cars. This was never how it was back in 1988. I sure hope this country can turn this around, but I think it would require a huge reboot.

      That’s quite misleading and you’ll need provide references for your claims regarding crime statistics. If you collate crime, then nz ranks 3rd in the global safety index which is exceptional (you can check this with a quick google search). Also the Gini coefficient gives a good indicator of inequality in nz. Far better than most oecd countries.
      Agree regarding nz being expensive and limited employment opportunities (due to size and population)

    I think New Zealand has a real long term problem though in that it has such a good reputation it may get overwhelmed with people wanting to move there. For a large country like mine it is not as big of a problem but for a rather small island country it could be. Also, foreigners even from non-English speaking countries can commonly speak English so tend to favor relocating to English speaking countries.

      Well I mean there was a case where that happened, I mean people wanted to move here from US but that was like a couple of years ago when Trump won the elections and so like it was said that a crap load of people from the US wanted to move here. I know it's not the best example but it's on a similar context.
      Although certain laws and stuff being passed down means that might not happen so much....
