Thank you for the explanation of the sparg clutch! I'm from the dark side and have a Tuono with sometimes a non-starting issue, where it appears to be battery BUT it's connected to a loud rumble noise (similar to main bearings havings LOTS of play) - which I suspect is sprag clutch issue. I think it's dragging so much power the small battery can't cope and gives up. I can leave it for days and press the start button and it happily fires right up! The noise it meakes I could only describe as a ratchet type roar - when stationary it sounds like big ends have gone - but riding it - sounds like a raw air/induction noise. All very odd but I'm fairly sure it's sprag clutch related.
Thanks for a very helpful video. On mine, a St4 s, the boss looked like the new one, without the extra holes. It was quite impossible to rotate it. I put the bolts in and tapped on them with a hammer (gently!). That did the trick!
Fantastic video thanks. I am an amateur home/hobbyist mechanic I have just finished installing a replacement crank into a GSX-R600 SRAD engine. I was wondering how the starter clutch worked. I always get excited when I you have posted a new video, I always end up learning something... Cheers mate!

Even years later you helped someone today -) I kinda had the general idea but your very good video gives me the confidence to tackle the job on my 2003 Monster 1000 DS Thank you for uploading !!!
As I've recently found your channel I've been working through all your videos. Some great stuff here. Makes a change to watch someone that knows what they are doing, not like a lot of 'how to's' on you tube. Just watched some guy in America doing same job on a 999 Duke. He wedged the alternator rotor with a bolt to undo it and the same again to do it up using the small shaft of the cam belt drive gear to lock it all in place. Concerns me that some people watching might do the same. Keep your videos coming, I'm hooked!
excellent video BUT a couple of questions, do you need to take note of the position of any of the parts in relation to one another, like flywheel to crank, or can it only go back together in the correct position for balance or timing marks or anything like that. secondly do you need to lock the engine in position either with the bike in gear relying on compression or with a special tool to hold the crank in position when removing and when replacing the big nut and torquing it back up? lastly where is the best place in the UK to buy the sprag clutch and roughly what should it cost, you mentioned the 80 or so quid for the other part, but what about the price of the gear that wears and the clutch itself? thanks.
Had this happen on my `09 1098 R - backfiring due to fouled plugs led to the whole starter clutch failing, I had the work done, my mechanic has a lot of experience and it was starting and running well after the new clutch and plugs were fitted..
Great vid as always! Have replaced one of these on a Nitro RC truck before, although it was all one piece and very tiny. Same principle though, and I never quite understood how the rollers actually locked up the one way, so thanks for explaining! Lovely bike as well, I do like the sound of those dry clutches :)
Excellent video. The only thing I would add is the size of the flywheel nut, you mention all the other tool sizes. Also interesting to note, you don't use a flywheel securing tool (Ducati p/n 88713.3367 for the 1200 Multistrada I am working on), just a windy gun.
Owning Kawasaki for 10 years zx9 40k miles, 06 10r 70k miles and 2011 zx10r 30k miles. Never had an issue other than Stator and starter by mitsuba which only the glue fails. 1098 comes in the fam and what an amazing machine. It's a speed machine it's so focused smooth and sounds like racing porn how ever, the fuse box connection on and off causes no crank no start and then this which only Italians manage to shove you one. Anyhow I love the brand just as 2nd bike, mistress. And that built is so complicated but all that leads for the speed machine she is. They say the beautiful ones are the difficult ones lol thanks for this gotta change this
Thank you for this very informational video. The best one I could find so far. I will be attempting this on my 2008 hypermotard 1100 I'm hoping it's the same, after looking at the exploded view of the flywheel setup I believe it's nearly identical. I'm just having trouble finding somewhere to buy the parts besides ebay
Thanks Jim. When using your impact to remove the nut, does it matters if the force turns the cam belt shaft drive? I see in this video turns a bit like 90 degrees but when I use my impact it turned like 180 degrees until I got the nut off... did you use the penny to lock the flywheel and torque it to spec? 😁
Thanks for this wonderful educational video, i have just a small stupid question since i have a RSV Mille Aprilia and someone tolds me its the same process, before you use the pressure tire pistol to unscrew the main bolt, how do you fix the wheel ? you have to put a gear or you hold it on the other side? Many thanks
This is a great video!! I'm performing the same operation on my 749 as well as replacing the starter motor with fat wiring. However, I'm stuck on the separating the clutch from the piece it sits in. I tried using a hammer and screwdriver and cant move that clutch even a little bit. Will using a drift make any difference?
THANKS!!! i have this problem in my 2000's aprilia falco and i couldn't understand how this piece works. Do you know if it's posible to this piece to sound while the bike is runnig too? i heard the same noise while i was in a trafic light in neutral. Onece again, thank you so much!

Having a SUPER hard time rotating the sprag boss/flange inside the flywheel to remove it. It's not budging. Would appreciate any further tips. Parts on bench as we speak! :-)
@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV Thank you for the prompt reply! Are you saying to secure the flywheel in a vice somehow? Thank you sir, I'll attempt to vise the flywheel---just don't want to mar or damage it! Greg in Austin TX USA
I figured it out! Much easier than rotating the flange slightly (which I could never achieve!): Simply screw in 2 M6-1.00 screws into the flange, opposite sides. Flip it over on the bench, sit the flywheel on a center spacer to allow the flange to be pushed out. (I used a large Delrin frame slider, fits in center only!) Hold flywheel on one side by hand, insert a medium Phillips screwdriver into the flywheel side, corresponding hole opposite the flange screw(s), and TAP hard with a hammer. The flange will slowly work itself out of the flywheel. Keep switching sides to ensure even ejection. Job done!
