  • Restored U.S. Army documentary from about 1960, covering early Saturn rocket development as part of Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA). Early Saturn designs are shown in some detail, along with initial hardware development. Missions like geostationary satellite launches or crewed moon expeditions are shown using paintings and animation.
    AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to resample the film to HD resolution. While it works in most cases, some artifacts are present in some sequences.
    Sound and image cleanup, conversion to original 24 fps frame rate, geometry correction and AI upscale and color restoration by RetroSpace HD.
    ============================================
    The Saturn family of American rockets was developed by a team of rocket engineers and scientists led by Wernher von Braun to launch heavy payloads to Earth orbit and beyond. The Saturn family used liquid hydrogen as fuel in the upper stages. Originally proposed as a military satellite launcher, they were adopted as the launch vehicles for the Apollo Moon program. Three versions were built and flown: the medium-lift Saturn I, the heavy-lift Saturn IB, and the super heavy-lift Saturn V. The Saturn name was proposed by von Braun in October 1958 as a logical successor to the Jupiter series as well as the Roman god's powerful position

    Easily one of my favorite channels. Love opening UA-cam and seeing a fresh uploaded retrospace documentary

    My Dad worked on the Weather Satellite 🛰️ TIROS at RCA Astro-Electronics in Hightstown ( East Windsor Township ) New Jersey in the 1980’s as a Mechanical ⚙️ Engineer from Old Dominion University.

    It’s amazing to see the origin of the Saturn project. Great vision and functionality that never happened, and this is prior to the Moon mission push that eventually motivated and re-shaped everything. I remember the on site JFK visit later with Von Braun. In watching those films of the visit, you could feel and see in the scale modeling presented to JFK by Von Braun the focus shift from the plan presented here, to what actually was developed and eventually flown. A lot of pressure on Von Braun and his team to basically revamp the entire Saturn project in just a few years. Cheers!

    Too bad they never built the "Nova"

    Have to say, the narration sure was way better back when a couple packs of Lucky Strikes was normal.

    They were still only developing the Saturn 1b then before the Apollo project and doing the Saturn 5

    i cant help but wonder what if they kept building Saturns, refining the design regularly over time

      They envisioned at least 100+ Saturn V flights. There were plans for several launch pads, though only two were built. Notice the VAB has 4 huge doors, 2 on each side, with 2 bays. The idea was to crank ‘em out assembly line style. Crewed Mars landings were planned for the 85-87 launch window. They threw all that away.

    I'm guessing that this is from 1961-63?
