Over the last few weeks, I’ve had a 180 shift in what I think about tech conferences.
Not long ago I made a video where my conclusion essentially was that conferences were… not worth it, and now I sort of have to take it back.
My main problem with attending these things was ROI. For you as an individual, a ticket, plus flights, plus accommodations, plus time, plus foot pain from walking all day… was not even close to worth it. $2,000-$3,000 in exchange for some networking? Can you quantify that? It’s a hefty price any way you slice it.
Even for a company. Last month, we flew 6 team members to San Francisco to attend Saastr, and our bill came to around $12,000 all in. We tried to get more value out of the trip than the conference itself, (and we did), but it’s still a lot of money.
And that is nothing compared to what companies spend to host a booth and to give away swag.
So I sat down with a couple of startups to understand not only why they do it, but how it’s somehow become one of their key outreach tactics. And they’ve... sort of, convinced me.
So here’s some of their logic, plus some of my own learnings to make the most out of conferences.

Tradeshows / conferences remain the most important place to engage acquirers and strategic partners. Creating a track record of exhibiting next to / near these partners can really get a startup on the map for a later acquisition.
Also, if the start up is competing with an established company, being close to them at a show can be very useful, they spend the big marketing money and attract the right kind of customers that the startup company can snipe off their booth.
$83,334 per month in a year is....
Well done Caya!👊💪👊
That’s t shirt will do great in startup ecosystem.
1:55 that was a clean sponsorship plug, not sure if the FCC would agree, but I liked it.
8:45 I didn’t get how Appsumo justified their expense.
So appsumo was to spend $100,000 in order for their partners to make $2 million? How are their partners making money in that after party?
That shirt stands for 1M ARR right? Which is the magic number for startups.
I saw your profile pic and got really excited
@@tchaffman I’m a sneaky little snake
got it, "Happy hour". Im going to an event this coming week but its sponsored so its not costing us much other than our time, but we'll be ahead if we master Networking during "Happy Hour"
Incredible how good you are at this! Congrts Slidebean team & Caya
Absolutely true. Human interactions that are natural and communal in nature tend to lead to valuable outcomes and relationships that cam be hard to quantify or understand, especially for introverts like me! My business partner taught me this subtle art to great effect and its worked pretty well online, especially when you take part actively in online community gatherings around certain topics or open projects. Honest interaction beats robotic marketing.
Great choice of music, editor-san!
in a lot of industries, if you don’t exhibit, you don’t exist. I’ve worked booths in video gaming, consumer electronics and air navigation control. The cost doesn’t have to be super high, latest booth was around €12000. Depends on the country, city and the show
Very insightful and well researched! Thank you, Caya. :-)
Thanks for watching!
Im in a different industry, but this was really interesting to hear the different way to look at conferences like this. Obviously a little bit different for my industry, but lots would carry over. Thank you!
Thanks for this! I’ve always considered if these are worth going! :)

I live in Vegas and have driven taxis and rideshare for a lot of trade shows.
Another component of shows is business to business transactions ultimately come down to someone on both sides relying on the person representing the other party to follow through.
When someone has built a business and has thousands of people relying on them to support their families, they need confidence in the people they do business with. That trust and confidence is built by seeing how they behave with alcohol.
I don't drink and can't stand being around people that do, but the alcohol in Vegas fuels Wall Street and Silicon Valley. You don't even necessarily need to attend the show for your industry. Simply being in town and available to meet with your peers or potential partners is very valuable.
This was an excellent video that felt personal and like a new lesson learned.
Glad it was helpful!
Do the conference for in person connections of other founders and companies. UA-cam can’t give you that.
Really cool video!
This is probably the best corporate UA-cam channel lol
For me, our first expo was very stressful and expensive for bootstrappers like us but also very successful if 1. You have enough money to boost your booth to bring the traffic or 2. your product stands out so well that it naturally brings the traffic. We were lucky on the 2nd as we had the only product like that there. We went to a few smaller ones since then and there has always been some value in terms of meeting new people, customers or having a few drinks after.
Very interesting topic !
Very useful video. Nice cameo uncle Noah 😊
Good insight!

Conferences are great places to find your tribe. It’s changed my life.
It's all about creating brand value.😌
This just reminds me of playing music at clubs and festivals. Lot's of golden oppertunities to Establish a little more cred, but most of the times? you were lucky if you made your investment back through the actual gig.
Made the band tighter in sound, but poorer in pocket.
Embrace the carnival I say. Everyone feels socially awkward at these things, (some just hide it better) just looking for excuses to make those cool things to experience and tell everyone back at home.
"Saw this cool product at the tradeshow" sounds lame at the dinner table.
"Played crazy eights with the guys from this cool company" covertly pitches your product AND makes them king for a day.
MAYBE you can land a deal or find the next big gig🤷🏾♀️? But if it's anything like the music industry? It's more like doing body shots off potential customers and hearing them out on how weird and hard life is.
And if R.O.I is that much of a concern? Sell festival survival supplies (water, chargers, snacks, etc) undercut the price by any competitor you can find (word will spread, you'll be sold out by the first day.)
Good job !
Thank you, Caya
I don't necessarily think you guys need to do a booth, but attending conferences and letting people know that you're there via social media can be a valuable place to help build those connections.
You can organize a meetup that way, without investing in the cost of booth. Like you said, because of the UA-cam channel, people know who you are

What's with the $83,334 t-shirt?
Definitely you should do conferences.
UA-cam is nice and has a built in growth factor. Each video can continue to get new viewers.
But for your startup, conferences were not just a growth source, but also a team building source. You took something that’s tiring and made it a little bit easier.
I think it’s the time availability that you need to really consider. Do for example there is no easier way to approach an executive then through a conference. He is not currently working and he has a break, where he’s less on guard. U. U can’t find that elsewhere
I’m just there for the stickers and free swag 😂
Not everybody watches UA-cam. So yes, attending conferences will help. It legitimizes you as a company. Plus, it’s a great way to find future partners and employees.
I agree, just gotta be pro-active and give it you're all. I think the biggest mistake most startups make is that they invest in the booth, not the appearance and they look like a bunch of school kids with really bad marketing materials that were likely done last-minute.
I think you should try it,. It is way better than doing nothing. I think you should try it and see how it works you never know what the outcome will be. You guys talk about a lot of companies and some of those companies have failed a lot but succeeded. So go right ahead. I'm 100% behind you guys.
I build activations like this for a living. 100k ain’t shit. We just did a window display that was upwards of 250k.
Like MBA from a reputable expensive school, if you have the money and you control a lot of money, making these connections justify the cost. If you are poor living paychecks to paychecks, it won't.
Can someone talk about the cost of trade show production rentals -- its insane what these company's are charging for a basic table and stool, often the cost to rent a tv is more expensive that it is to buy the same thing outright!
I had to login to comment this, I like your shirt.
Why this video keeps changing the title and thumbnail 3 times already
We test to see which has the best reception in terms of click through rate and impressions.
@@slidebean I see, I thought I was just hallucinating or going crazy
What is that shirt about?
I think you should make more conferences could be the best way of making friends in the startup world and strengthen bonds in the team
Maybe!

What is $83,334? Your hourly rate?
Caya, I think the SaaS conference is not the right conference for your company. I think you should rather go to conferences for startup entrepreneurs who would be your potential customers.
I would prefer more Quebec City events, to booths. 😉
Good insight
Thanks!

Caya where can I get that 83,334 shirt?
My 41,667 shirt is getting a lil' snug
For that you have to go to the Chartmogul guys 😬
If you got a booth at a conference would you ever give out donations to a charity of the choice of the recipient instead of swag?
You could give the recipient the choice. Few prefer the donation.
These are antiquated and are no longer fit for purpose same thing seen across other industries like the swiss watch industry
Going to meet like-minded people within your industry is nice. A booth would be a whole other thing
calm down with the thumbnail thing it changed like 10 times already lol
it's nice to be cheap sometimes
Caya, another great video. As a CEO for CallDR this connected. Thanks
Lame covert marketing attempt detected.
Trade shows are valuable for Partnerships, New Products and Supply Chain Relationship building. But sales HELL NO... You are better off on your regular CRM strategy. Reengineering your business model is really important with trade shows. I have gotten contacts for new products a lot at those trade shows.
you should be getting paid to attend my friend.
This is a great video, want to be youtube friends?
Not worth it I guess??!
Meeting like-minded people! yes, that's what it is worth for!

*The reality of the rich and the poor is this: the rich invest their money and spend what is left. The poor spend their money and invest what is left"*
trade show booths are only worth it when the crew is pole dancing, otherwise it's bland and generic.
