Replacing a VP44 Injection Pump from Thoroughbred Diesel

  • I replaced the dead injection pump and upgraded the lift pump. Thoroughbred Diesel customer service has been easy to deal with, shipping was quite timely and their prices are fair. I have close to 300 miles on the truck as of this morning and everything works perfectly. I should have bled the fuel lines right from the start...live and learn. 1999 Ram 2500 5.9L 2wd 5-speed

    This suggestion is too late for the beekeeper but for others watching this video that have a older 2nd gen Cummins and are getting ready to replace the VP44 I would highly recommend replacing the tappet cover gasket on the drivers side of the block. They do get brittle, crack and when they go they make a huge mess and the truck becomes undriveable. You'd end up pulling the VP again to get at the cover. Do yourself a big favor and buy a quality gasket from Geno's or other place. There are some gaskets out there (China anyone?) that won't seal at all.

    I would keep 16psi on your lift pump because more psi to the vp44 can damage the front shaft seal on the vp44 .And it will leak diesel into the Timing gear cover dumping diesel in your oil ..

    Excellent work! Next time bleed the air out of the filter with the screw on top. And open the injection lines as soon as the filter is bled. Much less cranking required.

    enjoyed watching the video. The truck I just bought has the Raptor lift pump already on it. Been thinking about getting the glowshift gauges but dread having to install them. I do have a fuel gauge on top of the fuel canister reads 22-24 PSI. Had to replace a power steering hose which was leaking at the crimp. Keep them coming. thanks

      Thanks for watching. So far I really like the glowshift gauges and they are still working just fine. My only complaint is they don't have much dimming capability. There is a slight reduction in brightness when you turn on your lights, but they are still very bright to me and distracting. Just a small gripe, but I spend a lot of time on the road at night and the A-pillar gauges are right in my field of view. The red background or the deep purple background are the most comfortable to me at night. I have a video on my channel of my installation of the gauges...it's not too bad really.

    I really like my 2002 3500 too. I've owned 1st, second, 3rd and 4th gens but I like the second gens the best. Another thing I do is in the summer when it's hot is keep the fuel tank above half a tank when I'm working the truck like towing hauling hay or cattle. The pump is cooled by fuel and if it's hot outside and working the truck all the fuel returned to the tank just keeps getting hotter and hotter if I'm thinking right. More fuel the longer it takes to heat up.
    Ive got mine tore apart waiting for one more seal. Started leaking on rear seal of trans and small leak on input of dif and little seepage on transfer case so u joints and seals all around while its apart. Also carrier bearing. I'm 63 so it's a two week project. Little at a time.

    Reminds me of replacing a 5.9 in a Gradall G3WD about 15 years ago. After we got the engine in and it went back out on the road, the injection pump worked loose, and I had to tighten bolts on a very HOT engine. We had to repair it while the engine was hot, as the crew had the road cut to replace a culvert and didn't have another piece of equipment that could do the job. I had scars on the back of my hand where it was blistered. I only wish I had had the room that you have on your truck.

      @duttydiesel8303 5 років тому

      Nah man, as long as you don't crank for more than two solid minutes should be fine. They are made to do lots of cranking and heavy cranking..
      However you were absolutely right, there is air in the system and it will never fire with air in the system.. the vp44 is not a self bleeding system.

    Hey, brother... I replaced IP and lift pump on my 2002 3500 last year. I also have the same gauge kit as you. I've done tons of research on lift pump pressures and here's what I've learned... 20 psi is MAX. 6-7 is MIN under load. 14 psi is bypass pressure (return to tank). So above 14 psi the IP is getting fresh cool fuel even when the engine isn't consuming as much fuel as the lift pump is providing. I see 19 at idle, 14 to 17 during normal driving and never less than 10 under heavy load with Fass DDRP ( similar to your new lift pump). Based on what I've read this is pretty much ideal. Hope this helps

    My raptor crapped out on me and they told me it was because I mounted it in the stock location (like instruction tells you to do) and it needed to have a draw straw installed in the tank. I got a refund and bought a fass pump but I did mount it back by the tank and I put the draw straw kit in. I almost bet the stock lift pump burnt out your vp44. My fass pump won't drop below 11 psi at wot and runs at idle 17 psi at 60-70 mph 14 psi. I guess they say 7 psi is a safe min. but 10 psi would be in my opinion the best min and not over 20 psi highest. I hope my vp holds up I did put injectors in it and it cleared the warm engine skip it had.

    • @yourbeekeeper
      @yourbeekeeper  5 років тому +1

      Oh boy... I hope this Raptor doesn't give me issues...ugh. When I bought the truck the lift pump was dead and it was crusty and likely dead for quite some time. I didn't realize it until I installed a fuel pressure gauge. I was very new to Cummins and didn't know what I didn't know. I knew I was living on borrowed time. Thanks for the pressure information, I'm planning to turn up the pressure a few PSI and have it sit at 17~18 at idle. There is a lot of conflicting information out there....I have read 6psi~8psi as absolute minimum and at 14psi is where you get the return flow of diesel which is best scenario to keep the IP cool. So far, I have about 7k miles on this repair and it has not missed a beat. Time will tell.

  • @chriskahlson
    @chriskahlson 4 роки тому

    To understand the Cummins fueling there is both pressure and flow, the flow is very important because the VP44 is cooled by the lift pump, so you need plenty of flow. Your fuel pressure should be 15-18 psi and is normal to drop as low as 10 psi under power, just because the pressure is dropping does not reduce the flow per hour unless it goes below 10 psi.

      Little late to the response but for future reference take a 7/8 socket and put it on The alternator nut. The belt will slip clockwise so hold ratchet counter clockwise and that will stop the engine from turning over while breaking the nut loose. Also helps when torquing the nut down. And is a huge help when doing valve lash! No more getting under the truck and turning the engine over by crank pully!

The injectors can sometimes cause a pump to fail as they get bad and don't allow normal spray.Also before i would fit a new pump i would change all diesel lines back to the tank and remove and check complete tank especially in a truck of that age it would be insane not to do all that.
