Baker / DJ / Trubisky all have talent but suffer from mental mistakes and/or turning the ball over be it by way of fumbling too often or getting picked off. Could they thrive in a top 5 team? Carson Strong's knee injury has to do with the cartilage in between two of the bones in the knee detaching and causing the bones to rub together, obviously this is extremely painful. The surgery he got before his senior season was to reattach the cartilage using pins which wouldnt have been a long term solution anyway. The latest surgery he got was to insert a cadaver (replacing the cartilage that was detached) in the affected area. Apparently, this surgery has more of a chance to be successful than it does to fail. His body basically just needs to accept the insert rather than reject it for it to work out

You lost me in the 2nd half. Matt Corral’s arm strength, compact throwing motion, leadership, intelligence, pocket presence, accuracy, athleticism, and mobility are just as important, not to mention play against upper tier defensive talent that can be projected into the NFL. Certainly you can argue that the scheme isn’t NFL style football (with progressive reads) but look at all the guys who did come from those NFL ready schemes and failed when they got to the NFL. Moreover, you compared his stats against a guy who didn’t face nearly the same number of future defensive all pros. Not an apples to apples comparison.

Same.. it's all gimmicky, don't know how to translate it, and haven't shown the tools with Howell and Corral.. then throws up a graphic with Willis only attempting 16 more "pro style" throws than Howell with a lower completion %, yards per attempt, and worse TD/Int ratio. • @Saffold22
      @Saffold22 2 роки тому +1

Agree with you wholeheartedly .. Scheme aside, Corral exhibits more than enough positive traits that give me confidence he can translate successfully to the NFL, especially when considering the consistent high-level of competition that he went up against in the SEC. The main thing that would concern me with him would be his health/durability to hold up at the next level, considering his stature and style of play. In terms of pure talent, I believe you could honestly argue him - with validity - against any QB in this draft.

  • @nathancarroll7347
    @nathancarroll7347 2 роки тому +17

You said the 3 keys for fail rate were Physical tools, coachability and destination - but I would disagree with physical tools being a thing that causes QB's to miss. Looking at the QB misses from 2015-2019 we have:
    Jamies Winston
    Marcus Mariota
    Jared Goff
    Carson Wentz
    Paxton Lynch
    Mitch Trubisky
    Baker Mayfield
    Sam Darnold
    Josh Rosen
    Daniel Jones
    Dwayne Haskins
I don't think any of those guys (outside maybe Josh Rosen) were misses because of their physical tools. I think when analyzing a QB's likelihood to fail it comes down to:
    Decision making
    Coachability/Development
Looking at the list again here's what I believer were their biggest flaws as NFL starters:
Jamies Winston - Poor Decisions + Didn't develop
    Jared Goff - inconsistent/Poor decisions
    Marcus Mariota - Didn't develop
    Carson Wentz - Injuries/Poor Decisions
Paxton Lynch - Inconsistent + Bad work ethic (From reports)
    Mitch Trubisky - Didn't develop
Baker Mayfield - Inconsistent + Destination
Sam Darnold - Poor Decisions + Didn't develop
Josh Rosen - Poor Work ethic
Daniel Jones - Poor Decisions/Didn't develop
Dwayne Haskins - Poor work ethic/decisions (RIP)
Development seems random, and to some extent it is going to depend on where you land. some of these teams (Titans + Cardinals in particular) have since shown a track record of being able to develop other QB's, and some of these (Eagles + Giants) showed prior ability to develop QB. I think development is heavily tied to a player's work ethic and is in someway trackable through a player's college development. The guys on this list who didn't really improve as college starters:
Jamies Winston (got worse in college)
    Trubisky (one year starter)
Sam Darnold (Identical year 1 and 2's)
Josh Rosen (Came in as a great freshmen... And stayed at that level)
Daniel Jones (Stats are almost identical through 3 years)
    Dwayne Haskins (one year starter)
To some extent, we could have seen these guys not developing coming. Again, this isn't to say that guys without much improvement in college can't be good pros - this is projecting who is most likely to bust. Which brings me to the top-6 QB's from this class and ranking them on how likely they are to bust:
    1. Carson Strong (The injury concerns with Strong might take him off some teams boards all together. Clearly the most likely to fail because of his knee)
    2. Malik Willis (Horrible decision maker on film, didn't improve from 2020 to 2021, 2-year starter but showed no ability to go through progressions)
    3. Matt Corral (Didn't improve from 2020 to 2019, also showed little ability to read a defense due to the system he played in)4.
    4. Sam Howell (Didn't improve between 2019 and 2021. Did have an improvement spike in 2020 w/ NFL talent, but dropped down to '19 levels in '21. I think Howell can be successful with great weapons around him, but can't be an elite QB)
    5. Kenny Pickett (Showed development from '19 to '20 and took a leap in '21 with better playcalling + surrounding talent. Biggest concern is his decision making in the pocket with his feet. He bails from a lot of open pockets.
    6. Desmond Ridder (Showed consistent development in '20 and '21, is a good decision maker with the ball and most of his concerns are about physical traits, which may limit upside but don't drop his floor IMO)
So that's the list. If you want a bust-proof prospect, I think you go with Ridder. I think his upside is pretty low though. Pickett has some bust potential, but I think it likely to stick around the league as a replacement-level starter for a long-time. I think Sam Howell has a decent floor and you can win with him if you get talent around him. He also has a cannon arm that doesn't get talked about enough IMO. I think Corral is similar to Howell, but has shown less in processing/progressions that will need more development. Willis and Strong are boom or bust. Sometimes those guys work out (Josh Allen the most obvious example IMO) but they are also most likely to bust.
There you go. My bust analysis on this class.

Have a hard time with the ‘’have not seen him make the NFL throws’’ and ‘’no left to right reads’’ when Brett has Willis as is no. 1. I could argue we have not seen a ton a of NFL reads from Willis in a piss poor conference. I love Willis, but to me there’s nothing in his tape that makes me think that he is (right now) a better QB than Corral. When I see Corral I see high-end mecanics, accuracy and unreal release… in a game that a the pro level is all about getting the ball out quickly. Now, can he make the reads quickly ? Maybe, maybe not. But is it not the same question with Malik ?
I just feel people are overthinking this with Corral. Yes, RPO and fabricated numbers. But nobody has ever used numbers to gas up Corral. Always has been about mobility, arm talent (nicest in the draft in my opinion) and leadership. You are taking the gamble on if he can adjust. A certain team in the midwest took the chance with Mahomes.
And one last point. Everybody ran that Fields to Olave bomb in the playoffs tape to gas up Justin as a top 1-3 QB in the draft. NFL throw this and NFL throw that. I never see mentions of that Corral out of pocket bomb against bama which the WR dropped. UNREAL pass.

I can’t see how RPO offense can completely discount MCs lightning fast release, short pass ball placement(which rpo or not, will come up huge at the next level), and his throws on the run. Herbert is great example of someone who ran a non pro style offense, mostly one read, spread offense, yet he’s worked out great. MC is still my qb1 because of his release and short pass placement alone. Honestly in a league filled with bad lines, that plus athleticism will get you far and MC also has athleticism.

UC alum here, major Ridder fan, I've watched all of his games throughout the years, but truly the only issues he has is the slower release and he can definitely improve his accuracy. Now as much as I've hated the Steelers growing up, that would be the best landing place for him, and if he does the league better watch out. Tomlin could make Ridder into an elite QB for sure. The franchise was almost built for him.

Moreso than "coachability," I'm using the term "mental fortitude." There is actually a pretty intersting record of guys who were Academic All American QBs finding success in the NFL. I talked about this phenomenom more in depth in a Stampede Blue Fan Post. But, I think there is a strong correlation between the professionalism needed to succeed both academically and on the field in college and the professionalism necessary to succeed in the NFL. "Athleticism" (including both arm strength and mobility) then is merely the cap on a player's own ability to reach his ceiling.

Best predictor of success from what I can gather is, what is the QB rating, when under pressure. If you notice Burrows numbers actually improved when he was under pressure. Zach Wilson was hardly under any pressure at BYU, and the one game he was under average pressure against Coastal Carolina he looked average. Watch some old tapes of John Gruden sitting with Mahomes, and you get an idea of what NFL coaches are looking for.

The stuff that translates to success for QB’s is very situational. Surrounding cast, consistent and good OC for at least first 2 years of their career, work ethic, leadership, what sort of scheme they’re in. So many variables where sure fire prospects turn into dumpster fires and guys you didn’t even watch tape on turn into all pros. It’s just what comes with the position. Appreciate your transparency and willingness to admit you’re not the best at evaluating QB’s. No worries bc you’re not alone😂

Many hindsighters have been criticizing teams for missing on their 2018 QB picks and skipping over Allen in the lead up to this year's draft.
