On the Unplugged, Kurt plays the song with fingers but only the solo, he plays it with a coin. I think is a quarter of dollar. It makes it sound more "metallic".
TiGeRz1928 he is talking about Curt from the meat Puppets an I know he had a pick in his mouth I think but not sure which song tho lol I need to rewatch
it's actually not Kurt Cobain playing guitar, and this song wasn't recorded with a coin. It's rest-stroked with the thumb. you're absolutely right though, he did play with a coin on at least one or a few other of the Meat Puppets tunes on the MTV unplugged session.
the chords are easy for me lol its the picking that I sometimes fumble up. particularly picking the e a and d strings with the thumb lol. lovely song though, I love the original also by meat puppets off the meat puppets 2 album. 👍🏴
I've struggled with playing this song for years and after a couple views, I've got it mostly down in about a week. Subscription well earned and I'll definitely be checking out your other videos for the unplugged covers. Love the album.

Matt Brown at first I thought it was crazy thumb speed. Initially when i saw the tab i did it thumb finger thumb. But then when i watched curt you notice he’s dragging it over with barely any effort, almost like the raking technique in shredding. I didnt watch your whole video but assuming thats the technique you’re using too?
I'm just picking up guitar again after a long break. A while back, I learned the baseline for Lounge Act from your channel. So much fun to play! Your videos are great 😊...love the way you break everything down
chicken yo apologies for this but yo the most recent comment on this vid and it seems you’ve understood it so do you know what he plays the second time around on the chorus (7:53) that melody seems new from anything he mentioned or showed how to play and it seems he doesn’t say anything about it
Matt thank for helping my lazy ass learn this song. I don't know why I'm so lazy when it comes to learning simple songs. I'm getting old I guess. Ripe old age of 33. Nice Guild, fun fact it's made by fender unless all the acid I did in highschool has ruined me.
sorry for the confusion! you have to subscribe to my patreon to receive the tabs. My website just includes a list of songs that are available to patreon members
Sometimes I think it's unfortunately unavoidable. Really all you can do is lift up and take some pressure that your left hand is putting on the string when shifting between various points on the fretboard.
...which will cause your strings to go dead a lot sooner. Try instead letting your fingers kind of trail behind as you move your hand up and down the neck, so it's more the soft skin on the side of your fingers contacting the string instead of the hard calluses. Like Matt said, it's kinda unavoidable on steel strings, all you can do is mitigate it a little.
Hi mate!!! Thanks for video!!! I have only 1 question, i`m not sure about my tuning because it sounds a bit diferent. I`m using Guitar Tuna app and tune down all strings to -11 about. Is it should be correct? Could you check please?

I've been playing this song for a long time too and I have just ALWAYS heard him hitting the open g string in the verse riff. It makes it a bit more difficult to play, but gives this gorgeous hypnotic drone and makes the riff sound a lot more dexterous. You can really see it in this video (you can also see him fully lifting his hand off the fretboard in that same riff! he doesn't slide it at all anymore!): ua-cam.com/video/_-xLsGOekk8/v-deo.html also i'm almost certain in the outro the d2 you're playing is actually a dmaj7 lingering on the 2nd fret of the 2nd string.
Can you please do me a huge favor?? Can you please do a lesson on Kurt Cobains Black & white blues song aka the happy song lol I love that jam an out of everyone on UA-cam that does lessons I think you would do it best.. also maybe do more of Kurt’s home demo tracks like black and white blues and do re mi and the yodel song an many more like clean up before she comes and ect unless you already have an maybe I need to scan all your videos real quick to check 👍 and keep up the great work bro
Thanks. learned some stuff here thanks but you are missing a note from the original riff which people should know about. Every arpeggio in the main riff from G to Bb chords has an upstroke on the open G string directly following the 3 downstrokes of the thumb. It sounds like a swung triplet because that up stroke is often "minimized" but it's really an even 16th note quadruplet. Watch Kirk Kirkwood play it in this Meat Puppets live video ua-cam.com/video/_-xLsGOekk8/v-deo.html where you can hear and see it clearly and then go back to the Nirvana unplugged or the rehearsal and you will see that he always plays it that way. Thanks again
Not quite right...close though. The picking pattern is different. Watch TMP play this song live at the Bing lounge and it’ll give you a better idea of the arpeggio patterns.
3/4 the entire length is just that unnecessary mumbling. Jesus, as if that tutorial is made for ppl with considerable lack of IQ mensa points. Bear in mind some of us willing to learn this tune really has been playing around with guitar for a quite a while already. Next time, please do condense it!!!!

Best tutorial for this song, thx mate!
At 11:25 I don't understand that part, please somebody can help me?
What's that picking technique called with the thumb
one you play through one string and rest on the string below with the thumb, it's called a rest stroke.
wow i never realised how odd this song was to play. that thumb technique is crazy. going to take me a while to get used to that
yeah, right?! it took a lot of practice for me too!

When you order Kurt Cobain off of wish:
Well done. Now I wanna redo my lesson on this one😁
That acoustic has lovely tone
Finger ease does the trick for acoustic string squeak. Kurt Kirkwood actually claims in the unplugged video that he has a finger ease addiction lol
Ah I used to own that very same guitar, but I had to sell it. I can almost smell the wood :´(
Sorry you had to sell it! Maybe it will find its way back to you one of these days.
What guitar is that
Really nicely done, dude 👍👍
Thanks Tom! :)
Could you do The happy Guitar (Black and White blues)?
I might at some point. That one has been requested a few times now...
very clear, great

There is a fair bit of string squeak in how the song comes together, though.

When you move the left hand on the ref, how can you avoid to make that terrible noise when you slide on the string???

Is this all played tuned down a note? because in order to get the same sound I have to slide everything down a fret
