While I do like a bunch of your advice, I do not understand why people believe they have to mow clover. Now it may be different in areas outside of the southeast, but you can let clover go to seed (most have great reseeding potential). It only adds to a clover seed base, allows nitrogen fixation and release, and greatly helps with weed suppression. Yes older clover is less palatable to deer but that's not an issue since you don't want a lot of summer food. As an absentee landowner and land manager I can say this works great in my areas. And clover is way cheaper than buckwheat in my area.
HI Jeff, I watch you almost everyday and I have learned so much from you. I have been following your advice since February of this year. Please let your viewers know where they can get the Earthway 2750 spreader for $45. I searched for months and the best I could find was $59 on sale. I would buy 2 more if I can get them for $45. Also, I have done Simazine once and Glyphosate 2 x's on about a mile x 15 feet wide for switchgrass and Glyphosate 2 x's for buckwheat. I plan to spread Switchgrass seed around a 5 acre food plot and Buckwheat seed on 2 1/2 on weed free ground in late May (90 days after the Simazine). It was too late to Frost seed in late February down here in Louisiana. You are doing a great job and I appreciate you and Dylan sharing your knowledge over and over again. Do you have any Louisiana clients?

When you say to mix 2 quarts glyphosate with 25 gallons of water, are you referring to 41% glyphosate? Which brand do you use for both glyphosate and 24D?
Jeff, I'm wondering why you don't mention soil tests or PH levels prior to planting? Also, fertilizer application (ie triple 19,ect) with your no-till strategy? I tried the buckwheat no-till approach last season and had very disappointing results. Actually had the buckwheat re-generate and smoother one end of my field. Any advice would be much appreciated. Hello Jeff I need some help! Planning on using your no till method this year with buckwheat to plant winter rye. With this process, when do I spray the DeerGro Plot Start? Before planting the buckwheat on June 1 or before planting the winter rye on August 1?? I know I have to spray glyphosate after smashing the buckwheat to kill the buckwheat. I don’t have the means to use regular lime. Located in North Central WV. Ps- I used DeerGro Plot Start last fall when planting a perennial clover plot and had success with it. Thanks for all you do!!
Good tip about the water needed for glyphosate use. My well water has lots of minerals in it and doesn't make for good mixing water. So instead I use my dehumidifier water. I run the condensation line to 5gal paint buckets and use that water, works great!
I planted switchgrass April 2. I planted 10 pounds an acre. These are mostly screen strips. The seed I have has 85% total germ. 56% dormant and 29% soft seed. Now I’m wondering if I should go back and plant another couple pounds/acre due to the amount of dormant seed. Thanks Jeff!
Hey Jeff, my only water source at my hunting property is a stream that has crystal clear water flowing. If i pumped it through a filter to remove any possible organic matter, think it'd be ok to use? Other option I am considering is putting in a shallow well.

Another great video...ever consider a yard truck to work plots to save time? Uninspectable due to rust or whatever, but functions and drives. I use an old 12 foot farm roller to ensure good seed to soil contact...works great.
No damage at all to the seeds. Brassica seed is very small, and the tracks would only enhance seed-to-soil contact and as a result, germination rates. My only concern might be soil compaction from the heavy equipment, which is a potential drawback to no-till when you use heavy equipment: unless you use a subsoiler, or plant daikon radish and subsequent winter/spring freezing and thawing to break hard pan, you may compact your soil.

Hi Jeff! First off, I want to say thanks for all you do to help people like me learn and have a fighting chance with starting a food plot. Your work is GREATLY appreciated by many!! Question: So I live in Kansas, and am working on my first ever food plot that’s in a tree line between an ag field and woody cattle pasture. The plot is pretty small, about 1/4 acre. I want to add one of those 110 gal. water tanks as a compliment to my relatively small area. The plot sits in a low area, and a decent amount of the rainwater from the ag field drains towards the plot, and actually cuts a small ditch (about a foot in width) right down the middle of my plot. My thought is to place the 110 gal. tank right in the path of the small ditch, allowing rainwater to naturally flow into the tank, and then continue on to the other side and keep moving if the tank is full. My worry is of herbicide runoff. The ag field gets sprayed about once a year, and I plan to plant buckwheat and eventually crimp it and spray it with glyphosate. Would you be concerned about chemical runoff of either gly or any other herbicide entering the water tank and harming deer via the runoff ditch? Thank you!
hey Kirk, don't need to worry about gly because there will be stirred up sediment in the tank which deactivates it. Now the bad news, the tank will fill up with mud quickly and be ineffective, I've seen them completely full of mud! Wait till it rains and go out there and walk aroundand find a low spot where water is puddling but not direct flow, take a rod to put in the ground because those spots disappear when dry. You have found your sweet spot and no direct chemical runoff! Hope that helps
I've watched a lot of video on multiple different subjects for deer habit. I have 120 acres but over half is swamp so I don't have a lot of open area. How would I plant a food plot in area that is wooded, do I have to clear cut an area, and if I do I would end with stumps that I can't remove or can I plant in area that has trees? Thanks for all the great information being passed on with your videos. We have an access trail which is 30 yards (on one side) from a grass path we use to access multiple stands. We will have Egyptian wheat (12 ft wide) between the access trail and the food plot. Is the access trail too close? We don't hunt the plot, just the trails going to it.

HI Jeff, i know you reccomend the earthway spreader, but are there any unrecognized problems with grass seed spreaders people push around their yard? That is what I have used when I owned land and I was able to get winter rye to grow. Is the earthway more advantageous when seeding over buckwheat? When I seeded winter rye i was going over bare ground essentially.
Hi John...those seeders that you push around thebyard are not stable enough to plant food plots...same with the pull behinds. Also, many food plots will have uneven terrain or in the case of buckwheat thick growth to seed thru (you seed first crush 2nd). Unless the conditions are perfect and food plots tiny, a push seeder would be impractical.

Hi George the cool thing is I've been teaching and practicing these planting techniques for over 2 decades...they are extremely tried and true 😊 But so true...so many planting methods and ideas have come and gone. Mostly born from folks that had limited success in very narrow applications. Some were pretty crazy!

Anyone try this spray, packer method on heavy clay soil? It just seems counterintuitive to compress clay soils by mashing seed into them every year.

I took my earthway a part this pre season and cleaned it up.. If you do it, have a little red grease handy to lube up the gear.

Jeff- What about seeding into forestry mulcher debris on a new plot in the woods? Lots of wood chips and pine needles.

Hi Greg, I've never had weeds like that. Be careful on the mowing too, brassica plants die when crushed.

I've got a JD 450C Bulldozer. I'd like to use the tracks to crush the buckwheat. Wondering what kind of damage I'd do to the brassica seed????
