Thanks for the video Jeff. This will be my first year following your no till strategy from spring throughout the year.
I’ve followed your videos and implemented several of your management methods along with seeding your fall plantings on my parents old dairy farm in northern NY for the past couple of years. It’s left a lot of the neighbors scratching their heads as to what I was doing and likely the butt of a few jokes... until last fall when we harvested one of the largest bucks taken in the area in probably 3 decades.
I’m a true believer. Keep up the great work.
I’ll be sure to give my neighbors a smirk and head nod from the seat of my 4 wheeler this summer.

We planted about 1 1/2 acres of buckwheat on a new lease early June in Upstate New York. I thought we were in trouble as we had limited rain for a couple weeks. I visited the plot today and its thick and green. Some spots 12-16 inches. We'll be knocking it down in about 3 weeks and planting our Fall Plot. Great advice and video here. Thanks Jeff !

I have a small honeyhole (less than an acre) so instead of using a clutipacker (since I don't own one) AFTER I broadcast my soybean, clover, and winter peas OR buckforage oats couldn't I just mow down the buckwheat, which will provide instant cover for my new seeds and a quicker breakdown of the buckwheat?

2019 season in texas was rough. I travel all over the state and talk for alot of people who all consistantly said the same thing. They flat out didnt see deer. The main excuse overall was that the acorn crop was like nothing weve ever had. Question is.. does a massive acorn crop have the capability of keep deer in their core areas?

Interesting method and would like to try this next season on virgin ground. But what about liming and fertilizer. I been doing food plots in traditional ways with Disking and tilling ground while Lime and fertilizer is incorporated into the soil. Do you just leave all that on the top of the ground and if so. When would you do it. Obviously lime early But when would you fertilize and what type of fertilizer would you recommend for Buckwheat. Would you add additional fertilizer for fall planting prior to crushing and spraying. Obviously that would depend on what your planting for the fall since fertilizer would be different for clover than for brassica's or rye/wheat/oats. I have had problems with erosion and most of my land is sloped. So I am interested in this method

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  4 роки тому +1

Hi Ben, good morning! If the Buckwheat can get into the soil, then I would not mow. Since my plantings are in old food plot areas...I never have to mow.
A lot of the time it is better to let the dead weeds and grasses stay vertical, so that you do not create a mat of thatch that you end up having to disc or till into the ground.
It really books down to if you can get the seeds into the soil for adequate seed to soil contact.

We close March 19th 2021 and take possession that day. I want to to hit the ground running. My question is this.
Do your books cover a step by step order of operations for planting small food plots?
I have a 4 wheeler, 3 nozzle 25 gallon sprayer. And am going to buy a packer Max. I assume I need to weed with 2,4d may June July. Then plan to plant buckwheat, lay it down in the fall and do tillage radish for my first year.
Just really need the step by step help, and hoping the books cover that in detail.

The mowing should expose the stalk of the weeds and existing plot close to the ground and kill it very effectively. So the glyphosate doesn't hurt the seeds that you spread into the buckwheat?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

No, Glyphosate doesn't hurt any seeds because it is a post emergent. Meaning the plants have to be growing to kill them...

Hi Ryan...it doesn't provide much of a Summer food source...which is a good thing...and it provides zero Fall food source or cover. It dies immediately with the first frost. More of a smother crop and exceptional soil builder. The perfect and only seed variety that works with my ultimate no till system.

Hi Dan...congrats on the land ☺️ It would not be too late to prep, but it really depends on the amount of exposed soil right now. You would not have to plant Buckwheat in your area until early June. You would have time to kill and then till a couple of weeks later even...if you can.

Unfortunately it does not. The clover is too thick and smothers out growth. It also doesn't crush over with a cultipacker, ATV tires, truck tires, etc. You have to till the clover under to achieve adequate seed to soil contact.
