- Overview of some recent modifications I made to a Carry On Utility Trailer. Addresses changing a tire with a tongue jack, Toolbox choices and why, protected and improved wiring and lighting with LED lights. Trailer gate modification with an gate assist. Great spare tire mount and also upgrading the springs on a 2000 lbs trailer
For those asking about the Pro Plug, here is a link to the $35 unit I used in the video: www.proplugproducts.com/?wpam...
Mod #1 seen here: • Must Have Trailer Mod ...
Nice the pipe to jack up the tires. I like and respect that. Been assembling trailers for 16 years and making my own for 8 years and I absolutely respect this modification, it should be industry standard. Much respect Sir.
Thank you! This was my very 1st video and it gets a lot of views. I'm surprised too that I've not seen any manufacturers incorporate it.
I'm working on a scratch build trailer now. A video will be posted!
I too think that is BRILLIANT !!👏
I have owned utility trailers most of life, and I never thought about modifying them to accommodate the tongue jack for easy tire change. I am blown away by that my friend, Great job!!
Thank you!
That tip alone was well worth watching the video. Such a simple mod that's very helpful. Paul you should see if you can sell it to a trailer manufacture.
Paul between me and the misses we've got 11 trailers and I'm shopping for number twelve today . I thought I knew trailers. After watching you though, I tip my hat to you sir. I Really enjoyed your share , and thank you for it!
I really appreciate the compliment. You've got me covered by a factor of 3, so hope you are enjoying them all!
Not gonna lie I’m stealing more than one of these ideas. My trailer is close to 70 years old and the frame rails rotted out (old boat trailer) I think the only thing original on it now is the tongue. Love that pro plug and everything else about this build. Great job.
Love the Tongue jack. Nice. For replace tire make it so easy. Wow.
First off I personally wouldn't buy a box store trailer but, you have added some really smart ideas to it that's definitely a winner. Building mine from scratch as at the scrap yard the steel angle and tube was still way cheaper and stronger.. The axle with leaf springs, fenders and good tires/ rims were free, got lucky. Your add on's are fantastic as your perspective gave me great things to add in that left me with forward direction rather than saying later, "Damn That's such a good idea I need to go add that", it will be on it right out the gate Thank You.
Thank you for the kind words. Check out my other video. Most recent one is a give-a-way of a proplug box. I'm giving two away and currently there is just 1 guy who has commented for the win!
I plan on building another trailer from scratch, like you are. I'll post up when I do!
Always appreciate the feedback and welcome any future ideas/ requests for a video.
Great tips. Hint: cross those chains in an X when hooking them up
Thanks. I think I may have to call that out next time. If you watch closely in the video, but because I have the pre-crossed when hanging it doesn't demonstrate well on video.
Looks like the chains are attached to a single loop. No need to cross them in this setup.
@@Chugwater_Cowboy such a long statement for someone who has no input to add it appears you are just picking on @RayzorZ28 . The original comment does not explain why he should cross the chains.
@@Chugwater_Cowboy why would you cross the chains? I'm seriously curious. I just bought me a 5×8 and don't know much about utility trailers. I'm about to deck it and mod it.
@@rjskum688 Rj, you cross the chains to create a "basket" for the trailer tong to fall onto preventing it from hitting the pavement should it hop off the trailer ball.
Clever and to the point. Especially like the rear jack mounts and the license plate extra anchor. Have lost one or two myself.
I have to say the jack system is awesome,I've had a trailer for years I am definitely going to do this..I really love the other mods to...
Thanks for the video..Nic..
That jack setup is a real good idea!
Paul, thank you, for the great ideas. I like your modifications for jacking up the trailer to change the tires. Fantastic idea thinking outside of the box there!
Thanks. I'm really surprised this was never a common practice by manufacturers. Seems like a lot of people see value in my idea. I really appreciate the feedback and positive comments!
@@PaulsProTips Paul look into selling that mod to a trailer manufacture. It's awesome!
Love the jack in the back. Do one on each side and pull your wheels off the ground when in storage. Love it!!!
The Jack mount at the rear was a great idea.
Thank you. I appreciate the positive comment.
I am building a trailer. I love the rear jack points.
As a young widow with kids flat tires are one of my biggest pain in the butt issues/worries. Next thing I'm learning to do is weld and Im going to weld that jack stand attachment thingy on! Thanks for sharing it. GENIUS!!!
I'll weld them for you.
Great idea on the jack to change your tires. I'm definitely doing that to my trailer 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks. Glad to hear you like it. Good luck with yours!
There is a lot of thought gone into this. I love the jack, the detachable cable & the tail assist...gonna do all three on my trailer in the spring when I revamp it.
Thanks. Most of this comes from using it a lot and thinking of ways to improve the use. Love to hear how you make out in the spring, and if you find anything else worth doing. Feel free to come back and share in the comments!
Thanks for checking this out and good luck!
Your additional male mounts for the tongue jack, is very clever! As with most inventions, it seems obvious in retrospect, but I've never seen this before. I'm going to do this to both of my trailers! Great idea!!
Thank you! We are going to build a square drop camper/gear trailer and are going to start with a new 5x8 trailer. Definitely going to reinforce the tongue and I'm going to check out that pro plug system! Being in maine, it would be nice to have that on our trailers to keep everything clean!
Great video and mods. When my original cheap trailer tires needed replaced, I took it to a tire store and got actual steel radial trailer tires. Huge difference!
Why even buy trailer tires...they're junk. The salesman told you to?
Nice work sir. I did similar mods. One additional one i did to mine was to replace the tongue with a 72 inch length tongue and then installed a 2 inch ball set up
Really good useful mods,, really like the tounge jack mounts for changing tires
Very well done Paul! Not just pro tips but pro design and fab.
Great mods Paul. Really like the tube for the jack to change the tire. If you put a jack on both sides you could load the trailer without being hooked to the truck
Great tip on mounting the jack tubes on the rear!
I put backup lights on our utility trailer and boat trailer, helps ALOT!
Not only at night, also when backing up in parking lots, this way other folks know exactly what your doing.
Got one other tip for ya, instead of using those 2 x6 boards on the floor of your trailer. Go buy some 3/4” or 1” waterproof plywood and you can get the plywood covered with plastic laminate on both side of the plywood too. If you use 3/4” thick plywood, I doubled it up on my floor of my trailer making it a 1 1/2” thick. Since my trailer was a 5 x12 trailer I put a 12” seam on the plywood floor on the left side with the first piece of 3/4” plywood then put the seam on the right side for the second layer of 3/4” plywood. It will never crack, warp, twist, and will outlast any of those 2x6 or 2x8 etc for decades! Put this on the floor of my trailer over 10 years ago and still looks like new for the most part other then some scratches on the laminate where I’ve used a shovel to get out dirt, gravel and bark dust. Which with the laminate on the floor it makes sliding a shovel across the floor slick as can be having nothing to hang up on like splintered wood on those 2x6 boards and no spaces between boards also means no materials like dirt can fall thru the cracks since it’s a solid floor with the plywood and I guarantee the plywood will hold way more weight then those 2x6 will too! Even if the waterproof plywood cost more? The fact that it outlast the 2x6 by literally decades and you won’t need to have to spend the time and expense of replacing the 2x6 boards. Over time you’ll find even paying more for the plywood still will be cheaper over time to use as a trailer floor. Just amazes me that more people haven’t figured out that plywood and even CDX plywood better then those 2x6 boards for so many different reasons. Having plywood got those several layers all glued together and each layer has the grain running the opposite way that makes more strength as well as more stable material than any solid board ever will be! Back when I was a poor boy and couldn’t afford waterproof materials like I used now. I just used regular fir plywood on my trailer floor and put a sealer on it. That floor lasted over 15 years before I ever had to replace it and the trailer sat out in the weather year round too! You will never be disappointed if when you need to replace those 2x6 boards and you change to a good plywood floor you’ll never go back to using solid wood boards again I promise you!
Hell of a job. Really nice mods. I’ll be adding some of these to my trailer. Just watch the dewalt tool box, they get brittle with age.
Nice job Paul, some really good tips. Thanks for sharing
There's some great tips. I've always had tongue jacks, but a great idea to use to jack the trailer
Stumbled across your video while researching e-track for my 6 X 12 dual axle. That Pro Plug is EXACTLY what I was trying to put together in my mind as an alternative to having the wiring harness exposed 24/7 for quite some time. I have flexible split loom on mine but you have to pay attention to it as it does degrade over time, especially here in south Florida with our super-duper sun. Don't have to create something that has already been created ...... just ordered one. Only negative ...... they are closed for the entire month of December! But, not a big deal, been this long without it another month isn't going to make any difference. Nice video, thanks.
I really like some of your modifications. Especially the ramp assist and beefing the ramp up. They are all to flimsy when you buy the trailer. Love the wiring setup on the front of the trailer. I need to watch again and see what you did there. The rear Jack is also a great idea. I’ve thought of that because when I lower the ramp on mine and get up in the trailer it lifts the front off the ground. Thanks for the video. Nice ideas.
Thanks. I did a video just on the wiring. There is actually a long and short version.
Working on a fresh build right now. Hope to have more videos soon.
Nice mods, I really like the jack mounts on the back.
Every mod is spot on. I guess you could go on and on with the mods, but these all are terrific without spending a whole lot of money. One more important mod might be removable stake sides. Another simple thing to go with your jacks would be level indicators
Thanks. Leveling a trailer for towing is often overlooked. Great suggestion!
that jack setup is smart. One thing I did on a work trailer was weld a axle spindle where my spare was than I carried a spare hub bearings and spare.
best idea ever.
Great idea!
Right! Great idea. I had a flat and dang, what a pain.
Awesome mods! No favorites, I like them all. Great video.
Congratulations, you made it into my recommended videos. Nice video, it had that kind of flow that makes the subject interesting. I especially liked the one shot style.
The jacking points at the rear can also be used with 2 more Jacks to stabilize the trailer when loading and unloading.
That is a great comment! The previous owner of this trailer must have done that because the wheel bearings have held up great!
I have another one of these trailers I bought new in 2004 and wheel bearing failures were one of my 1st headaches. Thanks!
Great idea's on everything, thanks Paul !
love the pro plug ..very nice add
Great tips, definitely doing the Jacks and plate mods! Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback. I've got to get some of these other video's uploaded.
Awesome ideas! Thanks for the video. Keep them coming.
Nice modifications. Makes the trailer that much more useable. Also, the late model rear bumper swap on the pick up looks sharp.
Thanks for watching! The mods have been very rewarding and I appreciate the encouraging comments.
The old truck has an 8.1 in it with over 350k. The bumper update was necessary due to a rusty bumper (under the plastic covers). You have a sharp eye sir!
Great mods indeed + I'll add few ...
1. UNDERCOAT trailer frame, steel or aluminum with some oil undercoating only (Fluid Film and such), take care of rusted frame above deck as well.
2. Weather proof (Thomson sealer) top and bottom of wood deck and do it as often as necessary.
These two things are the MOST important ones you'll ever do to extend trailer life.
3. Install telescopic stands in the back of trailer, work great for loading/unloading heavier loads + when storing, you can lift the trailer off the ground.
They are some great tips too! I appreciate the feedback. I regret not doing a great seal job on the deck of this trailer. It is a 2008 trailer and I bet by the 20 year mark, it will require a full deck replacement!
Nice mods. Another mod I'd recommend if the trailer doesn't already have them, are greasable wheel hubs.Hubs with external grease fittings will save you tons of time and effort greasing wheel hubs. And believe me, don't overlook the hub bearings. If the bearings are dry, they will eventually fail.
That was a DOPE video!
I have a trailer just like that!
(Mine might be a bit longer)
But same idea...
I’m definitely going to ad all them mods to my trailer first chance I get! Those are all really good ideas man!
Great video to buddy!
Keep at it! I will definitely be watching the videos on the leaf spring replacement!
Thanks again
“BIG D”
Thanks Paul! Good stuff buddy! Gonna get a Pro Plug for sure!
The jack ideal for flats is genius.
Love the video, nice mods I will be making some mods to my trailer. Thank you for sharing your video. May God bless
These are great mods and smart ones too, thank you, great video. I plan on buying my trailer soon so this really helped.
Thank you! I need to upload my scratch built trailer. Look out for it soon!
@@PaulsProTips I'm going to be on the look out for it. I know that is going to be a great video too. Thank you.
Great video I have to purchase a small trailier to haul my second 4 wheeler around and I'm definitely gonna use some of your ideas
Nice. Good tips for a first timer. I have all these...after years of encountering a reason to do. :) much appreciate the vid
Awesome mods. Thank you
Awesome upgrades.I like to get the longer chain links and weld them along the bottom of the trailer where the vertical angle bar and edge of trailer connect. They make great tie down points and add strength.
Great tip! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the ideas. Nice setup.
Great video! I imagine the rear jacking points come in very handy if you already have a load on the trailer. Also If you're parked.
I really like the jack used for changing a tire. Great idea and really worth while.
Thanks so much for the positive feedback. What type of trailer are you working with? What do you mostly use it for?
@@PaulsProTips Hi Paul. I have a 5x10 steel utility with sides. Has a 3000 lb. axel with brakes. Very heavy duty but real heavy to pull. More then I need really. I used to haul soil and sand with it, but those days are behind me now.
@@Mascotal you bring up a good point. I am currently building a more heavy duty 5x10 with a axle and brakes like you have. I do have concerns it will be heavier and harder to manage when unhooked.
I think I will be posting a mid build video to bring people up to speed. If you see it, I would really appreciate your input!
@@PaulsProTips I had my trailer custom made for me. I can haul up to four yards of heavy manure, or two yard of sand, or a full yard of gravel. My tow vehicle is a 2006 F250 with 5.4 v8. I do OK on the flat level but the truck has to work on any hills. I suspect the trailer is about 1000 lbs. but I have never weighed it.
Those are some nice mods Paul, looks like you’re an excellent welder too buddy.👍🏼☮️
Thank you! I'm continuing to refine my technique. Started a scratch build that needs to be uploaded. Stay tuned!
Wow! Never heard of a Pro Plug! Thanks!!
Yeah, I've got a few other videos with specific techniques. This ProPlug system really is a game changer!
I would love some honest feedback on the trailer wiring videos on what is good or what you do differently. Thank you!
Great job... Both on the trailer & the video..! 🎉
Nice mods! Think I’ll invest in the lift gate assist. Didn’t think I’d worry much about it before, but it’s getting heavier with age,..my age that is! Lol. Thanks for the ideas.
Too true.
Nice work. Hope to see more like this
Nice mods, thanks for the ideas
All great tips. Thank you!
Thanks for the positive comments! This has been a great trailer for me. Hope you get the most out of maxing out your's!
Great tips and thanks for sharing them
Great tips thank you so much for posting
Awesome im going to follow all of your ideas thanks
Awesome! I was thinking like...d rings... but you surprised me.
I love squared away trailers. Nice set up. Jack stand is ideal for replacing a tire.
Great tips. Really like all. Thanks.
I do appreciate the positive feedback!
Well done. Thanks for sharing.
If I could make a suggestion. My trailer has a 2" square tube at the front of the deck. It is 18" off the deck. I carry two spare tires that ride on axle stubs and spindles. By carrying them this way it also gives two sets of bearing ready to be swapped to the trailer axle. It works well. I have had a bearing go out and had to change bears on the road. The bearings on the spare tire racks are pre-lubed and ready to install. Before this I had carried spare bearing and a tube of grease in the tool box. 50 years of towing various trailers this is by far the best way to carry backup bearing. Just thought you would like the suggestion. Great video.
Great idea on small trailers! Hopefully many read your comment. I am building one with a 3500lb axle and electric brakes. Since the brake drum is the hub, this suggestion is not as ideal with brakes, but on these small trailers- a wonderful idea!
👍 I understand. My trailer is a two axle car hauler with a tilt deck. You are correct that a spare electric brake setup is difficult but you can still run a non-brake hub. You would not have brakes on the affected axle but it would get you off the side of the rode. Like I said just a suggestion. great video. Because of this video I will be welding a 5k jack behind the axles on each side of the trailer. I think that would be a $200 well spent.
paul , i love that jack idea ! im doing it this weekend lol
Thanks!
Good job my friend, you have very good ideas!
Sick trailer man! 👌
Love it! Great job!
Nicely done!
Thanks I appreciate the comment- and the positivity even more!
Safety chains are supposed to be attached on trailer tongue so they can be crossed for mounting on vehicle so that if trailer uncouples it will cradle the trailer tongue. Spare tire mounting should be on side nearest the ditch not the roadway driving side.
Agreed on the fact that the preferred side for mounting a spare tire is the side the ditch is on. I carry two spares now on this. One on each side.
Great point on the chains. I may take for granted that people understand that the chains are to be crossed to create a basket to catch the trailer tounge, should anyone be unfortunate enough to have it come disconnected. If I recall, around 3:08 you may see the chains were previously crossed and though I move the chain from. The trailer to the hitch, without showing they are crossed, they actually are already crossed. I really appreciate the comment and hope some will learn from reading your good advice!
Great tips! Good work!
Nice mods.... gave me some great ideas!
Great video, thanks ! I really want to learn to weld. Should have done it 20 years ago.
The jack stands are a great idea.
I appreciate the comment. I'm actually surprised this has never been done. All these trailers with a "set-back-jack" to clear the tailgate would be much better with this design- though ai may be a little biased!😉
Neat jack idea
The pro plug system I really like.
Thanks! I think it is a great item too. I stumbled across it and apparently after talking to Karl from ProPlug, several people have discovered it from my video! If you happen to get one, mention you saw it on youtube!
@@PaulsProTips thank you I will. 👍
I do the light boxes on every trailer. About $45 on amazon for the pair with lights.
Thanks Paul
Thank you - great video and very helpful.
I appreciate you taking the time to leave a nice, positive comment. I made a few other videos, but this one really took off. I will continue making videos.
If you have any specific needs, feel free to reply. I am always looking to hear ideas for future videos!
Looking good i like it you have good ideas thanks
Great ideas great video. Thanks
Live the jack idea
Great video man and great idea! I’m gonna do this to my trailer and spare tire on a spindle! Extra bearing too!!! Another guy commented with the spindle idea. Didn’t want to take credit for someone else’s idea! Super Kool!
Thank you man. Got a bit stalled with the cold weather, but more videos coming soon.
I agree the spare spindle was a great suggestion! Plenty of sharp guys commenting on this one.
Great information, thank you.
Thanks for the positive feedback. It really helps!
Nice video, liked, subscribed, and commented. You're almost to 400 subs now!
Thanks man. I've got to edit a few more vids and put them up soon and keep the momentum going- hoping to hit 1000 by the end of this year!
I just bought one , thnx for the post.
One tip....mount your license plate on the gate itself up high....you will never have an issue again
That is a good tip. Some trailers I remove the gate, and this one I fold it down flat at times, but your suggestion will work great on some!
I've done literally all this before I ever found your video lol.
You're certain to have more trips and tricks. I would love to hear more.
Even if you only did these, do you have a way you feel is better?
@@PaulsProTips I did the modifications to my boat trailer. I used a 5k lb drop jack instead of the smaller one because the gears should hold up much longer. The biggest improvement for a trailer, especially for a marine application, come down to wiring. I don't know about you but my light used to fail almost every time I went to use it and 99% of the time it was because of grounding. The trailer rust overtime and you lose your connection so the lights quit working. What I did was run a 3 wire to every light such as this, www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTDE0VO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PFAYA8MXNKYXP4HEJ4YB?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. By grounding the lights directly to the wiring harness, you eliminate that problem. I'm going on a year without having a single issue now, its well worth it.
@@Catfish4570 thanks for the reply. It was excellent! I agree on grounds and wiring. I did a video on how I like to wire things. I would value your feedback on it.
You make a great point on the larger gears in the bigger jack. Hope others read this comment. Plenty of wisdom in both points!
Good video. Short and sweet. If I were you, the next improvement would be a coat of rustoleum. Lol
Love the tailgate assist. I purchased a used trailer and swapped out the boards due to half being broken with 2x6 ones. Nice and thick. You did not mention trailer hooks. I’m not sure I saw any on yours? I added a total of 4, may add two more in very front. Purchased the large ones from Harbor Freight at $4 a piece and 3/8 screws/locks/ bolts from Home Depot. Those hooks were a must have for me. Very easy and fast to drill through the metal frame. Thanks for the video. I will be looking for the tailgate assist now.
Great mods thanks!
I really appreciate the comment! Wish you the best with your project.
The Pro Plug system should be used on trailers in the hire industry.
Nice trailer! 👍🏽
