In the U.S. and Canada, they are still just considered White Shepherd variants. They have actually been around in some fashion since the inception of the German Shepherd Breed. But the gene that causes the white fur is recessive, so if you breed one with a standard colors Shepherd, you get standard color puppies. For the longest time, the white color was considered a disqualifying trait and white puppies were often destroyed by the breeders. There was also a misconception for a long time that White Shepherds were contributing to the dulling or lightning of standard Shepherd coat colors. I think it was around the late 80's early 90's that there was enough interest in the variant that breeders finally began to breed them intentionally. Because Switzerland was the first country to officially recognize the breed, they have since been named the Swiss Shepherd. And I know all this because of my own White Shepherd. You will find that the only video I have ever posted is of my own pupper playing soccer.
I don't know if my girl, Sophie, was part Swiss Shepherd, but at 75 pounds, she was the sweetest, most gentle dog that I ever had! We traveled a lot and she was a wonderful ambassador of what the shepherd breed could be; whip-smart, good with kids, animals yet watchful and protective. She passed away over 10 years ago, at age 15, and I still miss her so much! I honestly hope that the breed doesn't become too popular; too many irresponsible backyard breeders out there that could hurt this wonderful dog's reputation...and health.
My wife had a German Shepard that passed away 9 years ago, she was amazing and a great ambassador of what the breed was supposed to be. We've been talking about getting another but were thinking of a Shiloh Shepard due to how breeding created so many health problems for the German. I just learned about the Swiss Shepard myself but personally I'm glad they haven't been recognised by the AKC.
They are beautiful ! I had no choice when I got my first shepherd. He was a roadside stray puppy. Mine has all of the shepherd attributes. He's also very gentle and protective. I have no regrets owning a solid black shepherd. Anyone can pet him. I take him everywhere. At five years of age I retrained him for my service dog. Thank you for sharing .
As someone who spent most of her childhood with a beautiful Swiss Shepherd called Blondie (back when the breed was still known as the American-Canadian White Shepherd and the breed wasn't formally recognized anywhere), it pleases me to see two of these beauties on your channel in such a short time. These dogs are absolute treasures with amazing temperaments and infinite patience. Easily one of the most underrated shepherd breeds. EDIT: No, I'm not German. The dog was named after the band Blondie and for her white fur. There was no WW2 legacy involved in the naming proces. XD
@VeWatchesVideos Do you know where the name American-Canadian WS came from because AM Can is a pretty big difference then Switserland.. An uncle of mine once had Swiss Shepherd that very gentle and almost the same as described in the video.
We have a two year old female WSS. Easily by far the best and smartest dog I've ever had. I've lost count to the amount of commands and words that she recognizes. Where I go, she will follow. She has a behaviour inteligence that's off the charts. We've taken her almost to every scenario, from cannoying to moutain bike rides, to dog parks, restaurants, slow walks, outdoor runs, music concerts, beach, friends houses, shopping, you name it and she always behaves properly. In Portugal animals can't go inside shops, so she just sits and waits at the door. Very gentle with all animals. In the house she's alert and signals strangers but not excessively. Absolutely focused on us. No one else exists. Strangers can call her or try to interact with her, and she just ghosts them. Because of this she has helped two friends of mine to overcome their fear of dogs. And of course, incredibly beautiful with the whitest white coat I've seen. There isn't one single time that we go out without someone smiles at us, try to pet her of even kiss her. I've met other WSS and they have similar treats and characteristics and this video just proves that WSS is an awesome breed. I regularly watch your videos and boy...you have some very badly behaved dogs, not like this one who was a delight.
Very informative! We rescued a white shepherd and he was an outstanding dog. The rescue didn’t know if we’d want such a calm shepherd. Now his demeanor makes sense. He looked quite similar with some tan mixed in with his white fur. My son named him Tanner. We lost him at age 12. 💕
My first WSS also was a rescue I took from the side of the road. I fell in love forever and when he died I was so heartbroken that I got another one. They are just adorable
I love that Swiss shepherds don’t have the dramatically shorter back legs. Less of a chance for hip dysplasia and arthritis I have one that comes into my store in Studio City sometimes and I was the only one to recognize that he wasn’t a white German shepherd.
In my experience I've only ever seen that in the US, since moving to the UK and spending a lot of time in Germany I only ever see straight-backed German Shepherds over here (thankfully)
@@sandedra329 yes that's the pose they're put in but on top of the bent spine they're also bred with shorter femurs so they do actually have "shorter legs" than they should. I'm so happy I had a healthy straight-backed GSD for 14 years who wasn't bred to be an American show dog. I don't understand why the Kennel Club's guidelines are so in favor of genetic mutilation.
They are amazing dogs. Chill and laid back but also cautious in a non threatening way. They do sing the song of their people but usually to people from their immediate circle. With other people they behave nicely. Sometimes I feel like they like to embarrass their owners..at least mine does :D
Yay! I was hoping you’d do a White Swiss Shepherd - we have a four year old male, who is nowhere near as well behaved at the groomers! Our groomer lives four houses up the road from us, and I can hear him complaining even with all the doors and windows shut! 👿 🐶
They definitely can make themselfves heard. Mine is pretty quiet, but whenever I or anyone else washes him, he looks like the most mistreated and opressed doggo that ever doggoed. I am betting yours, just as mine, doesn't have that same problem with any non-bathrom bodies of water though.
@@dootersnooter5343 he just doesn’t like the drier, or the air tube of death as Vanessa calls it, watch most of her videos with shepherds, huskies etc and you’ll see how much they like to complain even though they’re not being harmed in the slightest. We have 3 berners and a great bernese and recently fostered both a GSD/Samo mix and a Swiss Shepherd. The Swiss is AMAZING! Very calm demeanor, no prey drive, resource or anxiety issues. Just a chill sweet breed. Awesome to see on the channel!
I would be interested to know what type of voodoo was performed on that Swiss to have zero prey drive. In all honesty, it's minor in mine, but it's directed at cats. He doesn't want to harm them, just to catch them long enough that they'd play with him. Somehow communication falls apart when he uses his considerably large mouth to catch them. So he ends up crying, not because they scratched him, but because they still ran away from him. I have gotten very good at spotting cats in random bushes as we walk, but I sadly haven't developped night vision to the extent I need it to spot them before he does.
@@alinasartcafe We had ours as a foster (now in her forever home!) and have cats at home and she was very interested, but would never chase - even when they displayed prey-like activity (running, etc). Not sure what magic was involved, but she was SUPER sweet with our older cat (21), and would always try to mother him by lying next to him and pulling him into her belly with her paws or nudging him with her nose, then licking and cleaning him. He is grumpy old gus, but he loved the attention and would roll on his back and purr madly as she cleaned him! We thought maybe she was a mill mom who had her puppies taken away, but never got any details, other than she was not fixed and had obviously had at least one litter previsouly. She was just a sweetheart with our other animals!
Yuni has done very well for his first grooming session. I have to give credit to his owners because they have a fantastic job of training Yuni to be very well behaved.

I grew up with a German Shepherd, but we lived in the country and there were lots of kids and animals so he was a happy boy. That said, I wouldn't mind someday being in a position to own a Swiss Shepherd. They're lovely.
How lovely to see a white Swiss shepherd on your channel. I too have one, although my ten-year-old male doesn’t like having his nails trimmed. He used to be ok with it, but not anymore. Yes, WSS’s are soft as a cloud, very gentle, and even tempered. As others have commented, Dakota too has been instrumental in getting small children that are afraid of dogs to get over their fear. But my proudest time with him was when he got a fear-driven panicked street dog from Puerto Rico to accept humans into his life, and to now lead a relatively normal life, despite its beginnings. It took us about a year for that transformation. I love my Dakota from the bottom of my heart. By the way, he still thinks he is a puppy.
We rescued a senior Great Dane White Swiss Shepherd mix. She was one of the best dogs ever. With your description of Swiss Shepherds, I see where her personality came from.

What a beautiful dog! I'll have to look into the Swiss Shepherd a little more. I was really thinking about getting a German Shepherd but what really knocked them off my list was their anxiety.
@@miawilliams6183 I never heard of that. They are working dogs. Why would they be anxious? Some individuals. Sure, you can get an anxious dog whatever race he is but an entire line?
What a beautiful dog. I bet he was a great puppy to raise, and they did a wonderful job of it, obviously. Long life and happiness to him and his family.
My fluffy old lady is 14 years old and the only issue I’ve ever had with her was food allergy. She’s always been most content with long walks and a comfy spot outside to keep watch over the backyard. Absolutely loves swimming and bath time too! 🤍
My sister got a Swiss shepherd and she is the cutest! She fits perfectly in our family, and soon she will be working with my sister in school as a therapy dog. So proud of these two!
We had a Swiss shepherd, she looked exactly like Yuni. She was so kind and sweet. We used to go to the local schools and nursing homes. Kids who were scared of dogs would eventually learn to trust and elderly would pet while she sat next to them in their wheelchairs. She was the best dog, the intelligence of a German and was friendly but not in-your-face friendly.
One of the last dogs I had in my family was a swiss shepherd, and it was the most relaxed yet protective dog I've ever met. My mom used to groom dogs and train shepherds so this took me all the way back to when I was still small. Thanks for this trip down memory lane
And just like that I fell in love 🥰 He has such adorable facial expressions ❤ Had a German shepherd as a kid and he was a goofy giant of a dog. He’d jump the fence and walk himself several miles to a local drive-thru to get a soft serve ice cream🍦
YES!! This is our family dog. She was shockingly easy to train although not the greatest with other dogs, that took more effort. They are very fluffy with ridiculous corgi-butts. Very sweet & loyal
Oh my….looks just like our boy. We lost him to cancer 2 months ago and seeing that face brought back all the emotions 🌈🐾. Love GSD’s. They are the best!
@sabin..5331 Hey! It's been going really well. Definitely a great breed! I just watched this video again and I agree with most points about this breed. I like to call her a "German Shepherd Light" and it's also why I got this breed. Definitely still a working dog, so there's a ton of energy and potential there, but also very manageable and really relaxed and calm too at home. Easy to train, super smart, really friendly. Does require you to put in quite a bit of work too though. The only point from the video I wouldn't necessarily agree with is the "less anxious." I never owned a German Shepherd, so I can't compare, but my Swiss Shepherd definitely used to be anxious, though mostly rooted in frustration and her being overwhelmed. She used to have what I liked to call "mental breakdowns" when there were too many new impressions outside or when she had to patiently wait. Never seen something like that with any other dog but my dog trainer said it was quite common for this breed in their first 1-2 years of life. But 95% of the time, she's the best dog ever. :)
@@fiprosha Thank you for your response! "German Shepherd Light" that's sweet 😄 I'm glad that you are happy with this breed. My dog (English cocker spaniel) died 3,5 months ago. I was thinking about a new dog and this breed caught my eye. However, I'm not sure about it yet. Your response is very helpful to me. I was talking with other owners of this breed and they said that WSS is " very very sensitive" and you must train them only in a positive way. You said that your dog has "mental breakdowns". Do you think he has them because he is a "sensitive breed" or is it only your case? I think that I am very sensitive too, so I'm not sure if I would be the right owner for them 😅 I'm sorry for my English. Unfortunately, I'm still learning.
@@Vivid-l1oo Oh no, I'm sorry to hear about your dog. That has to be hard. I honestly wouldn't say that my WSS is sensitive and I also disagree with the idea of only positive training in general. The mental breakdowns are definitely not because she's sensitive, but more due to a lack of frustration tolerance (even though we actually actively trained that!) and her having a hard time processing certain impressions. Like, sometimes you drive to a new spot to go for a walk, and she gets so excited that she's already whining in the car. Then, once she's out of the car, she wants to go exploring asap. Walking next to you with a good heel is literally impossible (even though she can technically do it) because my dogs brain is everywhere but with me. If you don't let her run right away, she'll start whining and crying and it gets worse the more you insist on her being patient before she's allowed to run. There's often just a lot of energy that I think mine still needs to learn how to handle. This has already gotten a lot better though over time and with her first heat. I've also asked a dog trainer about this because I was really worried I was doing something wrong, and he only laughed and said this was really very normal behaviour for this breed. They tend to get really easily overwhelmed by the world outside. I'm sure not all of these dogs are like this, but mine certainly is, and from what I heard, it's nothing uncommon. These meltdowns really aren't the worst though, haha. As long as you don't care that other people probably think your dog is crazy. I like to compare them to a girl lying on the supermarket floor crying and screaming because they didn't get that chocolate bar they wanted. But yeah, mine's not sensitive though. I still do mostly positive training though because my dog is smart enough to know that she's faster and stronger than me. Like, recently I taught her not to pick up random food from the ground. If you tell her "NO!", she just eats it faster because she's absolutely aware that there's nothing I can do if she's off leash. So I taught her to basically find food for me, sit down, and she then gets a way better treat for it. She loves working with me, but it needs to be fair and worthwhile for her too. Where are you from? Because I was gonna say that maybe the WSS breed might also be a bit different in your country since I'm from Europe and figured you were from the US. I could also write you a giant essay though on why this breed is pretty much the best breed imo haha.
I looked after one for a friend and she was gorgeous, such a great companion. When out walking, people kept stopping me to meet her and she was so gracious about it.
I knew one of these dogs as a kid and his sweet, affectionate, near worshipful attitude makes even more sense now! Jake was honestly one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever known! 🥰
He is gorgeous. Looks majestic after his groom! Ours was longer coated, looked like a polar bear from the back (walked like one too), so very different from our other German Shepherd Dogs. We only had the joy of him for a few years as he passed away suddenly. Thank you a little walk down memory lane

Beautiful dog, I am the proud owner of "Elsa" our white shepherd and we adore her. Everywhere we go, people stop to chat, take pictures. Thanks for uploading this video. 🙂
Love my white shepherd! So glad to finally see one on the channel! My boy does not get groomed regularly but I think he does OK for our groomer when he does go. He is my first shepherd, and even though he is a bit nerve-y, he's a great first "personal" dog for me. He's already made me fall in love with shepherds, and I hope within a couple of years to be able to get him a working line sibling. He has been so fun to train and work with! When out in public I always get asked if he's a husky mix. He is technically a GSD and could be registered as such with AKC but if I truly wanted I could also have him registered as a White Swiss with UKC since he goes back 3+ generations of white!

What a beautiful woman. I wish she did the cleanings with her hair down

XD
Blondie? Are you serious?
That was the name of Adolf Hitlers Shepard too...
Infinite patience... I do not recognize our WSS at all in that hahaha
@@a.w.1906 it was blondi and not blondie. It’s a small difference but please be more careful next time before coming to conclusions
@VeWatchesVideos Do you know where the name American-Canadian WS came from because AM Can is a pretty big difference then Switserland.. An uncle of mine once had Swiss Shepherd that very gentle and almost the same as described in the video.
@@TJson206 There is absolute no difference in pronunciation. Only that counts.

They have a very neutral disposition with an excellent sense of time. They are also known to yodel instead of bark.

He's like a German Shepherd, except without all the post-war guilt.
Lol, pretty accurate 😂
Or the North Korean Shepherd, without the incessant paranoia.
Not quite only if they give the NAZI gold back.
LOL
Actually, the Swiss played EVERY side so, there's that...
When he was slapping at 1:37, he almost looked as if he were smiling -- sorta like he was just having fun with you.
He is so majestic with his floofs blowing in the wind. 🥰
Less of a chance for hip dysplasia and arthritis
I have one that comes into my store in Studio City sometimes and I was the only one to recognize that he wasn’t a white German shepherd.
In my experience I've only ever seen that in the US, since moving to the UK and spending a lot of time in Germany I only ever see straight-backed German Shepherds over here (thankfully)
@@-TriP- Canada too. Seen lots of short legged ones
Gsds don't have short back legs, it's a stack. They are squatting.
@@sandedra329 whatever
The little lick at the end was so adorable 🥺🥰 such a good doggo ❤ I love your channel
Such a gorgeous boy, and very well behaved, love how he protested the dryer! Great job!
Yay! I was hoping you’d do a White Swiss Shepherd - we have a four year old male, who is nowhere near as well behaved at the groomers! Our groomer lives four houses up the road from us, and I can hear him complaining even with all the doors and windows shut! 👿 🐶
Uhm have you watched them groom your dog or are you joking because that sounds concerning
@@dootersnooter5343 Yes, maybe better check it out
They definitely can make themselfves heard.
Our boy LOVES his groomer, he won’t let any strangers touch him, but will go running up to the groomer demanding fusses!
@@alinasartcafe our is very vocal, I never knew a dog could make so many noises! He actually likes being bathed, it’s the drier he doesn’t like, he does his “drama queen” bark, where he’s not being aggressive in any way, just complaining and making his opinion known to anyone in the neighbourhood! They’re very loyal and loving companions though.
You can just see the intelligence in his eyes. Gorgeous doggo. Love the little kiss at the end of his grooming.

The white fur and black eyes make him look like something out of a video game! What a precious boy
What a sweetness.
He sure seemed liked a really well behaved dog. Good boy❤❤❤
By the way, he still thinks he is a puppy.
he’s such a beautiful dog breed! his coat is also very lovely
We rescued a senior Great Dane White Swiss Shepherd mix. She was one of the best dogs ever. With your description of Swiss Shepherds, I see where her personality came from.
Oh my goodness I love this breed! Yes more laid back and a straight back!!!! I met one that was a therapy dog and they are very gentle.
Thank you for introducing your viewers to so many different breed of dogs. Knowing what each temperament helps so many people pick the right one for themselves and their families
I absolutely LOVE swiss shepherds!
I think they have less skeletal issues as well, which is always good.
Oh my goodness, what an insanely handsome pup he is! I agree, this may be one of my new favorite shepherd breeds.
I've never heard of this breed before, but it's absolutely breathtaking! Omg, I want one now.
Oh, my. So beautiful. He's like a horse with the cream gene, perlino or cremello, only with dark eyes. Baked Alaska. Very light flan. 😁 And what a sweetheart! I'm glad you got some shots of him trotting; he does have beautiful movement.
What a beautiful dog! I'll have to look into the Swiss Shepherd a little more. I was really thinking about getting a German Shepherd but what really knocked them off my list was their anxiety.
Sorry, but what do you mean by anxiety?
@@Falco2Itachi Some lines of german shepherds are known for being anxious or nervous, this can lead to them being more reactive overall.
A coworker of mine owns a Swiss Shepherd and she is the most well educated and calm dog, just a sweetheart.
WSS can also be prone to anxiety (they are still a herding breed and are prone to things such as anxiety, or they can be, as well as reactivity)
A gorgeous dog for sure
White Swiss shepherds are also recognized by the FCI! 😊
What a sweet and beautiful dog!
My sister got a Swiss shepherd and she is the cutest! She fits perfectly in our family, and soon she will be working with my sister in school as a therapy dog. So proud of these two!
What a sweet dog. Love the way he uses his paw, like a gentle "ça suffit."
Beautiful dog and so well behaved! His fur is stunning!
WOW, a gorgeous dog with a very good temperament. ❤
My jaw dropped seeing this absolute Gem of a dog. Stunning and sweet.
I'm getting a Swiss Shepherd in 6 weeks. Very excited. :')
How's it going? Are you happy with this breed?
I think that I am very sensitive too, so I'm not sure if I would be the right owner for them 😅
I'm sorry for my English.
