    • @VisioRacer

      There is more of them, unfortunately lots of those are not shot on a video.

      @@VisioRacer among them were the miller-burden v16 4 wheel drive cars they were supercharged as well making 500 horsepower from 303 cubic inches. Only one of those original 303 CI v16s is known to survive and its in an indy car making 300 hp naturally aspirated and was originally supposed to go into a 1929 Cord. Unfortunately theres not many videos of that surviving v16 and any that are we dont get to hear the engine at full revving rpm.

    That BRM V16 has got to be the best sounding 16 cylinder ever created. Amazing how an engine that small can sound so wicked.

    • @Tom-Lahaye

      It does, and the figures of this engine are still pretty hefty by todays standard, but realise this was created in the 1950's!

    • @kjrivas7419
      @kjrivas7419 7 років тому +8

      And it has that wonderful sweet loping whine of a true 16-cylinder engine! Beautiful and here, the best sound of the whole video.
      I loved the sound of the BRM H16 too. I have heard other recordings of it racing...damn!!! When it is approaching you, it has kind of an eight cylinder sound...but when it accelerates away from you, the exhaust sounds like a police siren!! The H16 is a true 16 cylinder engine, firing as a 16 cylinder engine, one cylinder at a time. I think 16 cylinder engines have the best sound...this side of the now extinct F1 gas-poppet valved 20,000 rpm V10's.

      @stephen john gray With a modern engine of course it will be better, more efficient, reliable, built onto a modern far better handling chassis and setup. Comparing them, is like comparing a tooth brush with a lemon?!? I bet a modern 1.6l race engine wont sound as good as that BRM though hahaha! Especially when its revving to 12k rpm!

      @arekb5951 7 років тому +8

      Eric Fixalot But honestly, I wonder how much time would it take for one person to replace all the spark plugs in a 16 or even 12 cylinder engine.

    • @EricFixalot
      @EricFixalot 7 років тому +4

      arekb5 Well it takes me less then an hour on a V8 with a fairly open engine bay, so I would think about twice as long under the same circumstances.

    • @arekb5951
      @arekb5951 7 років тому +3

      @EricFixalot 7 років тому +2

      arekb5 Yup, takes me about the same on my inline 4. I have not tried on my V6 though, but I expect more difficulty, due to confined space.

      That Detroit fitted in the hotrod sounds almost like a Deltic engine, but that's not so surprising, because both are two stroke diesels, the Deltic has 18 cylinders and is an opposed piston engine.

    • @andyharman3022
      @andyharman3022 7 років тому +11

      Since the Detroit is a 2-stroke, so it fires all 16 cylinders in one revolution of the crank. So in effect, you're hearing a 32-cylinder engine if it was a 4-stroke.

      It's just a shame that the op put in a video clip of someone supposedly driving down a lane in the BRM, the audio is actually from into the red and is the sound of a BRM V16 running around Donnington Park.

      I did wonder who would have the cojones to drive the V16 BRM with any elan on a wet lane with snow on the borders, but that doesn't detract from the great music of the soundtrack.

    It was incorrect to say that the BRM H-16 never won a Grand Prix. That was true for the BRM team, but it did win the 1966 United States Grand Prix in the back of Jim Clark's Lotus 43!

    • @MrZootalores
      @MrZootalores 4 роки тому +1

  • @Durbanite2010
    @Durbanite2010 7 років тому +39

    The BRM H16 was a flop of an engine for the reasons you stated, but it did win one Formula One race - the 1966 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, in the back of the stop-gap Lotus 43 driven by Scottish maestro Jim Clark. Clark lapped the entire field, probably more attributable to his excellence as a driver more than the car itself. It was also the first race to offer money to the top 20 finishers and was the richest race at the time for a driver to win ($20000). BRM-powered cars also won the US.G.P 4 times in a row at that point (3 wins to Graham Hill, one to Clark).

    The BRM V16 is the champ for me; its numbers are just incredible: 600 bhp from 1500cc over 60 years ago. Your video doesn't do the other-worldly sound justice - and I heard what you did there: you spliced the in-car portion of the soundtrack of Nick Mason's car to a POV clip of a drive on a rainy road. Clever work, getting the road's bends to match the engine sound!

      Bugatti has turbos in the exhaust path quieting them down. Lambo and Ferrari are usually naturally aspirated.

      Yeah, turbos quiet it down quiet a bit. Some turbocharged cars don't even have mufflers from the factory.

    A coupla things (though mostly not relevant to this vid but may be of interest to some):
    IIRC Detroit Diesel made more 16V92s than 16V71s. Often the 92 Series were turbocharged having 2x blowers and turbochargers feeding into the blowers. They had after[inter]coolers under the blowers cooled by cooling system water. They are commonly used on portable drill rigs and can be identified by having 4 cylinder heads.
    EMD have countless thousands of 2 stroke V16s running at this moment all over the world. They are hardly automotive but are extensively used in 3 main areas; rail, backup gensets and tugboats. They are in their 3rd series the 1st was the 567, then the 645 and finally the 710. Those numbers are cubic inches per cylinder. The power range for the 16 cylinder variants is between about 1500-4500hp at about 950rpm.

    Something probably worth pointing at about the Auto Union Type C at the start of the video. The car on those clips is on Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb, UK in 2016, since they're commemorating the time one of their top drivers, legendary hillclimb driver Hans Stuck took one to try to shatter the hill record at Shelsley Walsh back in 1936 (which didn't happen because it rained at the event). So, 70 years later, Audi brought one back at Shelsley, driven by one of their former works drivers, Hans Joachim Stuck, yes, the son of Hans Stuck, the 1930s Auto Union driver.
