    Cool thing about the Honda RA271 is that it was mounted transversely, and that the gearbox was an integral part of the engine construction. Very much a bike engine - Honda's forte - but with extra cylinders.

      The NR500 was raced beginning in the late 70's and early 80's. It was a vee configuration, and eventually was offered in a street bike (750 cc). Oh, it ran all right!!!

Honda also made a 750cc F1 class bike using the oval piston engine and Australian racer Malcolm Campbell won the Swann series with it in Australia .Freddie Spencer was the only person to win a race on the NR 500 a non championship race.

      Considering that the engine was designed 70 years ago, it's a masterpiece. It's hard to believe that ran the same boost pressure as the BMW 1.5l qualifying engines of the 80's. I wonder, with modern electronics, how much hp was even possible? Sounds like the perfect block.

    • @RRVCrinale
      @RRVCrinale 8 років тому +1

      AndyFromBeaverton I see using modern materials and technology causing that engine to scream up to and maybe past its theoretical redline. I'm not sure what would limit it more: the friction from having sixteen cylinders and a supercharger, or the acceleration of the pistons themselves? Crankshaft whip, perhaps?

    I think one of the craziest engines (although six cylinders), was a 1.5 litre V6 Gordini engine that's was infamously used in the Lotus-Renault Type 98. It think it's crazy because it produces more than 1200hp, out of a small 1.5 litre, turbocharged V6.

  • @Psycandy
    @Psycandy 6 років тому +1

    The stock Smart roadster had a 700cc 3-cyl turbo motor. Brabus bolted two of those together for a 1400cc V6 biturbo, but since the turbos were the same, you still had the same lag. It did make it to production but in limited numbers.

      Jordan Hillard I have owned 2 Honda MC22, very common up to 5 years ago in Australia, (most have now been killed by learners) they are a work of art, just like most Honda motorcycles from 1988 to 2002 before they started down the cheaper Thailand built bikes. Have also owned the mini RVF400, another jewel of a Honda that sounds great.

      +Fordsidevalvesforever I've looked into how much it'd cost to get one imported and I'd have probably 5-6k USD in it. At that point it's just not worth it for a 25 year old 250. Sweet bikes, I just wish we had them in the states.

    That V16 BRM is possibly Nick Mason's (Led Zeppelin's drummer), there aren't many more of them. Another significant part of his collection is a Ferrari 250 GTO, which skyrocketed in value from 70,000 pounds in 1978 to 37mill quid by 1989. He doesnt DRIVE it on the road, he RACES it at historic events. He wrote a fantastic book some years ago - Into The Red, a list of his fabulous collection, complete with sound effects on cd and includes everything from a Panhard tourer to a Maclaren F1 supercar - just priceless, one of my most treasured possessions

    I'm a little disappointed here. Coming from motorbikes I found these "extreme" engines very lacking. I mean I myself have a 600cc with 4 cylinders and 130bhp and there are numerous 300cc, 250cc and even 200cc 4 cylinder engines. An engine 10 times the size with only twice the cylinders seemed a little disappointing.

I remember the F1 cars when the formula was 1.5 liters and actually saw the Honda run a couple of times - and yes, it sounded amazing - you could hear that thing screaming a half lap away. And somebody (don't remember who, I've lost a lot of brain cells since then) had a 1.5 liter H-16 engine.
