I'm from St. Louis, gooey butter cake is one of the things I miss most about home! I always have to get some when I visit. Soooooo good!!! Also, you should generously sprinkle the top with powdered sugar right after taking it out of the oven.
Now just make toasted ravioli and St. Louis sticky BBQ pork steaks 😋
St Louis is my hometown also and the cake mix version just isn't the same. And yes to dusting with powdered sugar right as it comes out of the oven. As for toasted raviloli...buy a good frozen ravioli (beef filling only), let them thaw then toss lightly in flour, egg wash and then Italian style bread crumbs. Fry about 1 inch oil, such as vegetable or peanut, turn as needed until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese. Serve with a good marinara sauce. (NOT Ragu or Prego, etc.)
Yes, dust with powdered sugar is a must. I had some lemon flavored one last time I was in STL and it was so good.
I'm from across the river in IL, but live in NC. All these people around here making gooey butter cakes saying they started here I laugh and say NOPE thank STL. I bring up bbq pork steaks or toasted ravioli and I get weird looks.
I think she made toasted ravioli before but called it fried ravioli or something similar
Don't forget Red Hot Riplets!
As a lifelong St Louis resident, it’s so weird to me that gooey butter cake isn’t just something everyone knows about.
I've never heard of it until today!
I live in SC and I have heard of them (didn't know where they were from though) I've seen them for sell in the stores. I haven't tried any of them though.
My dads family is from St. Louis. Just now learned about it
I’m thinking probably because it’s so dang rich and sweet, it’s every nutritionists worst nightmare!😉
@littlejean24 -- Tell Jack Burleson hello.
This needs a strong cup of unsweetened coffee as accompaniment.
Can confirm, black coffee and gooey butter cake is a heavenly combo
Second this
I LOVE black coffee with sweets!
That sounds like heaven 😍
Ugh it’s the best thing in the world
In college I had a professor who was born in the Bush in Kenya. He came to America and was able to eventually get his masters and PhD in St Louis. He never knew his exact age or birthday so our class had a birthday party for him and I made the St Louis Gooey Butter cake for his "birthday."
My heart grew 2 sizes just reading this..
he didnt even know his birthday?
@@vegankowalski5193 It's possible
@@vegankowalski5193 it's very possible. they didn't really keep track of births in Africa back in the day, especially for the poorer population. This is the case for the elders in my family born in West Africa.
@@wrathford Yup! I think that some didn't even celebrate it.
Fun fact-Jenna Fischer, Phyllis Smith and Ellie Kemper all on the Office and all from STL, had a bake off to see who made the best gooey butter cake.
I wonder who's cake was best??
The way I knew Phyllis had to be involved
Phyllis Smith is from LeMay - which is right near me. I used to go out with a girl who saw her at a restaurant while she was in town (apparently visiting her mother), and she went over to Phyllis' table, who talked to her for a bit. She said she was extremely gracious and really nice.
And who won???? 😐
People from St. Louis just love to give fun facts about the few famous people who are from St. Louis
As a stlouisan, gooey butter cake varies WILDLY from place to place. At my local bakery, it’s almost like eating raw cookiedough but at the local chain Gooey Louie’s it’s a lot drier. Either way, delicious!
Gooey Louie’s is TRASH!
same where i am i've never seen it or had it with the crust on top I've been convinced a few times I was eating raw dough
My grandma's version is pretty dry, the cake layer is almost like a cookie bar (but really chewy) but the top butter/cream cheese is super rich. I love the variation.
the comment section is always so wholesome for these local recipe videos. it’s the best part seeing the mentioned community gather down here. lol
Amazing amount of us St. Louisans here. The best cookies are gooey butter cookies from Schnucks. There was a pack of them under the tree for my son...already gone and he didn't even save me a bite 😋
Yes! I was just thinking of running to Schnucks to grab a few when I seen this lol
Lol I was just coming to comment that gooey butter cake is delicious but my weakness is the gooey butter cookies from our local grocery Schnucks. I can eat a whole package myself, they’ve been breakfast, lunch and dessert before!
#Stl
So funny to see Schnucks on here haha my husband worked there as a teen for years and I shop there every week.
Lmao yes! Schnucks>Dierbergs
my local Bakery here in the St. Louis area just started shipping these! If you're interested, it's Russel's Cafe in Fenton, MO
Yes they’re the best!!!!
Omg I’m high key going to come, I live like 15 minutes away!
Ill have to check that out 👍
Fenton, MO... :D YAY!
Considering ordering from them even though I live in NYC lol. Thank you for sharing their name.
I love gooey butter cake! I can't eat more than a bite because I'm diabetic. But, I make it for other people. Thanks Emmy!
Try subbing either powdered: xylitol or Monk fruit sweetener for all of that sugar,
and see if that might work there instead?!
@@drflash36 Thanks. But, it's also the carbs that I have to watch.
@@robylove9190 Understood.
Are there any low(er) carb cake or cookie mixes that you could use there?
Try keto connect butter cake
@@exchangestudent2 I haven't heard of it. I will try to find it. Thanks!
While you’re cooking St. Louis why don’t you try doing some toasted ravioli!!! I have been there a couple of times and it is truly their signature dish
Yes! There was a St. Louis pizza place near my house and their toasted ravioli was so good. Same for their pizza and gooey butter cake. Was devastated when they moved to a far away location.
Yes please make toasted ravioli
It really is. I’m from St. Louis County (the burbs) and toasted ravs were available in the school cafeteria 24/7. Healthy? No. But reliably decent food? Yes.
Yaaasss it's a staple STL dish!!!
imo's pizza have the best toasted raviolis hands down...
Emmy: Let's make sure we get every bit of this and not waste things.
Other UA-camrs: Leaves enough for at least 3 servings in the bowl and discards driving us all insane.
Such a pet peeve of my mine. I LOVE that she scrapes the bowl.
@@raedae480 i hate it. Emmy is the best. lol
She definitely had me there with that comment!😊😜😅
This!
She IS a proud cheapskate after all :D She does her best not to waste!
How to summon St Louisans:
All she needs are some BBQ'd pork steaks and a plate of toasted ravioli and she would have the perfect St. Louis meal . Needed to dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar !
@@dobybeau THANK YOU! My STL senses were tingling, but I couldn't place what was off.
Imo's will also bring some of those boys to the yard too.
Where'd you go high school, am I right?!
Best fans of all our sports teams (go Blues and Cardinals!!). Love a cold beer, pork steaks, thin crust pizza, toast ravioli, and shit ton of powdered sugar on gooey butter cakes.
Being from St. Louis, toasted ravioli is my favorite. So now I have to make my own. Buy a good frozen ravioli (beef filling only), let thaw then toss lightly in flour, dip in a beaten egg with some water, shake off excess and then toss in Italian style bread crumbs. Fry in about 1 inch oil, such as vegetable or peanut, turning as needed until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese. Serve with a good marinara sauce...NOT Ragu or Prego, etc....something good like Raos, etc.
Tysm for your recipe 💓
i feel like she will become that one grandma who always has baked cookies done for their grandchildren every time they visit her.
Grandkids: can we have pbnj?

@@emmymade My wife wanted to try some of your ramen ideas, until she heard two words:
Dried squid.
Some people just don't know what's good for them, I guess 🤣
My Grandma used to make something called ooey gooey cake every thanksgiving giving that I remember being much more custard like in texture and didn’t have a crust . But none of my family knows the recipe and she died of Alzheimer’s a couple years ago without writing it down
That’s a real shame 😞
Sorry for your loss. Hugs
Yes, the one that my aunt makes looks different from this but is called the same thing. Its a lighter color and more custard looking also.
@@oliviawright8756 Maybe you can set Critter John up with that recipe?!
My fathers mom passed away. And my dads brother, my uncle really missed his moms food and tried to recreate his favorite mother’s dish. He had to remake it so many times to adjust the flavor till he got close to his moms version. Maybe you can try that?
I love that Emmy actually scrapes the bowl clean. It drives me batty when I watch other cooking videos and they leave half the batter is still stuck to the bowl 😂
This was a staple of my childhood when ever we would go visit my mother’s family in St. Louis. They would buy it from the neighborhood German bakery but it was always topped with powdered sugar.
This looks scrumptious! My husband and I just watched The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy last night and were just talking about how intriguing Turkish Delight looks! Emmy, you should try making Turkish Delight! I'm curious to its taste and texture!
You can buy Turkish delight on Amazon. You can get assorted flavours, but the one most likely meant in Narnia is the rose flavour:, most Americans I've met, say
ew it tastes like soap". The texture is kind of rubbery, like gummies.
From what I remember, I haven’t made or had them in a while, the have a texture like a soft gummy and they have different flavors, my favorite are the rose ones.
Turkish delight is one of my favorite sweets. It's traditionally rose flavor and is a chewy gummy texture with powdered sugar and or starch on it as it's pretty sticky without it. Most people in the west don't like the rose flavor but I love it.
Lokum are soooo complicated to make. A lady in my parents village in Albania used to make it and sell it and it was such a cool process. I’d love to see Emmy try her hand at it.
A good turkish delight has a tender gummy/jello texture, with an outer layer of powdered sugar. The rose flavour is floral with a hint of fruityness, and it’s very sweet. I suspect it was so alluring to the children in the movie because British children of the time were so sugar-deprived.
Emmy I love gooey butter cake! Try cooking it a little less! It will be very pale in color, it will still be crackly on top and the edges will be crunchy, but will result in a more ooey gooey cake!! Also, try letting it chill in the firings for a day or two. The flavors are enhanced that way! Serve chilled with a dusting of powdered sugar and it’s incredible! Almost the texture of lemon bars!! Let me know if you try it!!
Thanks, Emmy.....I've enjoyed your videos so much over this very hard year- you're a breath of joy and positivity!
Ooey Gooey Butter Cake......
Ate this once a month for 18 years. My family lived in Missouri then moved to Montana 10 years ago. All everyone wanted for their birthday was this.
It’s been almost 10 years since I’ve had it.
It's so good.
Actually, we call it Gooey Butter Cake and it is sprinkled with powdered sugar.
I live a little over an hour fro St Louis and I grew up on this. It is sooooo good. I have a real recipe no cake mix. But this looks a lot easier, I will have to try it this summer if we can start having cook outs again!!!
I’m in STL & happy to see you do this desert!
Emmi, HIIII ☺️ it’s 5am here in Saint Louis and I saw this video in my subscriptions and I decided it was a sign that I should reach out to you. I’ve been watching your videos since I was a child. I was in love with pippin cookin and I loved your cute spunky personality. As a child I felt comfortable watching you even though UA-cam is not the most kid friendly place and was even less so 8 years ago. You have a way of making your viewers feel special. I didn’t have many friends when I was younger. I went to a small school and I just didn’t fit in. I was never bullied but the other kids just avoided me. I took comfort in your videos. I watched the first poppin cookin sushi video you made more times than I can count. I feel like I know you though I know I don’t. I watched you move your life across the world, become a mother, and turn your hobby into a career. I’m so glad that you are still making videos. I am a high school class of 2020 kid. No prom, no graduation, and no college except for the classes I’m taking online. I’m lonely, as many people are right now. Your videos give me comfort. I’m glad you enjoyed the gooey butter cake. I’ve lived in Saint Louis my whole life and I honestly have to say that I prefer gooey butter cookies (gotta get them from schnucks. I can send you some!😊). Two more fun things about Saint Louis: Panera was started here so we call it Saint Louis bread company (bread co for short) and when we go to bread co we like to get our bagels bread sliced so we have a bunch of thin bagel slices to spread with cream cheese 🥯
I live in ST LOUIS and gooey butter cake IS the very best!! Thank's for representing the STL!! SO MUCH LOVE from st louis. I make definitely MAKE most of your recipes and my family love them. I even have your eat the ducky moss t-shirt! YOU ROCK Emmy!!
I only just recently realised gooey butter cake is a St. Louis thing, I just assumed it was everywhere since I grew up with it!
I moved to St. Louis as an adult. Practically everything unique to St. Louis, St. Louisians don't realize is unique to the area. Toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, Red Hot Riplets, St. Paul sandwich, even St. Louis Style pizza. It's kind of funny.
I’ve been using this recipe for years... and almost always use a chocolate cake base & add unsweetened chocolate to the top layer & it is delicious! I also make a pumpkin version. Yum! Thanks for sharing!
Ooh my goodness I’m so happy you made this!!! My grandma just made this for Christmas and it was amazing. Seeing you make this really makes me so happy because I just love watching you and your videos. I’m happy you enjoyed a taste of St.Louis ❤️
Nice! I usually just buy mine from Schnucks. Yours seemed a little browner than average. Powdered sugar on top is a must.
I'm from St Louis and when I saw this video I almost started crying. Isn't it so addictive??? I can't keep it in my house bc I can't stop eating it! You have to try St Louis style pizza - it is hilariously controversial among both residents and visitors!
Nick and Elena's in Overland had the best pizza. still do I believe! was able to get some a few years ago when I last visited. And they have upped the toasted ravs by toasted cannaloni. Miss STL. Needs some BBQ porksteaks and gooey butter for dessert.
I have been trying for about 1 year or so to find this recipe!!! Thank you so so very much!! God bless you. 😁👍
All this constant content has been such a blessing. You make my night Emmy !
I was so excited to see this, i didn't even know gooey butter cake was a St. Louis thing till I went away for school but i miss it. My mom likes to make gooey butter cookies for the holidays too
How are the cookies made?
Didn't know that this existed until I moved to St. Louis a couple years ago, and it's everywhere! Ice cream, cookies, you name it they make it!
I was in St. Louis two months ago, and I tried this while I was there! It was probably one of the greatest things I’ve ever eaten in my life!
Yes!! This looks so good!
STL girl here. Best thing ever. MacArthurs bakery does the best one in town IMO. Homemade is great but the real deal cannot come close.
My FAVORITE bakery! No matter where we have moved through the years
I always stop in south county to grab a white milk, gooey cake and one of those fruit tarts 😋 they're the best!
Aldi's in STL carries McArthurs gooey butter cakes, they are awesome.
I’m from St. Louis , it’s the BEST!
Ohhhh this looks so good!! Thank you for sharing!!
Watched your video last night and decided to make it today...it’s in the oven right now can’t wait to see how it turns out!
This is one of my favorite desserts. I sprinkle chopped pecans on top before baking.
Great idea 💡!
Yay my favorite hometown dessert!
I’m from Southeastern KY and my Mamaw made this all the time growing up. When she asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year this is what I told her. It was so yummy.
I just took this out of the oven and I'm so excited, it looks just like yours!! I followed your recipe that was printed and you left out the vanilla extract part but I remembered at the last minute!
I added 3 cups of powdered sugar instead of 3.5 (which the internet says is the equivalent to a pound) and when I made my "dough" it was a bit more wet than yours, but it firmed up a bit the more I mixed it so maybe I didn't mix it enough?
Thanks Emmy, I love your videos and it always inspires me to cook. (I also made the Mississippi pot roast overnight and were enjoying it on top of mashed potatoes!)
That goo looks so luscious, I want to slather it on my skin!
Haha! That edge piece - for a second I thought it was so sinfully delicious that you blurred it out. 😋
I want to open a St Louis BBQ spot here in Pyongyang, this dessert is perfect
I agree! Not enough desserts like this there.
Partner is from St. Louis, he's been going on about this cake for years have yet to try it but it looks so good!!
You are so fun! I love your use of old-fashioned words and sound effects. Keep it lively gal!
I'm from St. Louis, MO. When I was a little kid over 60 years ago my dad would go to the bakery every Sunday and bring home a peanut coffee cake and a gooey butter cake. Mom would cut me a piece and it would ooze off the cake part and all over the plate. Yum! I have never found one like that in a store bought or homemade one. Makes me want to be a kid again. What could you add to that recipe that would make it even gooeyer? (Is that even a word) 😂🤣
Martha Stewart has a recipe that has a oozy top layer (according to the picture). I haven’t made/eaten her version, only saw the recipe online. It’s totally different. Has the yeasted cake bottom layer and the top layer is totally different ingredients. Looks wise it’s pretty much the same though. I wonder if that’s the old fashioned version you ate as a kid?

My grandma used to make this before she passed. Never knew where she got it so I'm so glad to see it again. It's really good warm, but I really like it when it's half-frozen too, it becomes amazingly dense and chewy.
I’m from St. Louis and this is the best dessert! Obviously we don’t have it very often because of all the butter and sugar but it’s so gooood! 🤤
Gooey butter cake is so good it’ll be the cake for my wedding. 😂😂😂 we’re going a St. Louis food themed wedding.

Love this so much!!!!!
I've made a pumpkin version of this a couple of times (Paula Deen's recipe, to be exact); I only use 8 oz of the sugar though, it still comes out nice, not as sickly sweet.
That's all I use as 2 cups of sugar is way too sweet. I also use a light dusting of powdered sugar on top.
I’ve lived in St. Louis my whole life, and never seen a gooey butter cake that looks quite like yours. It’s usually made in a 8x8 or 9x9, not nearly as dark, usually more of a yellowish color, and ALWAYS has powdered sugar dusted on top. I’m curious how “authentic” yours actually tasted. It’d be interesting if you ordered one from somewhere in St. Louis and compared the two.
Jesu cristo callate
I agree mine is more yellow. I also use 8x8 pan. I think the pan size makes the cake more gooey n taste much better. The bigger the pan the less gooey the topping. N it’s all about the topping with this recipe. I to am from St Louis. My mom would stop at a bakery every Saturday morning n bring one home. N using the 8x8 pan makes all the difference with this recipe.
I make these for my family for the holidays. My mother's favorite uses a lemon cake mix for the bottom. My favorite has a chocolate cake bottom with a little mint extract in the top gooey layer.
It looks beautiful!
Ohhh I long for gooey butter cake and gooey Imo's pizza!
As a ST. LOUIS Native, I thank you for not calling it OOEY GOOEY Butter cake. I nearly go into a rage when that happens! Happy Holidays from The Lou.
