I enjoy your videos, but as a Buddhist I have to say you do made a mistake with something. Is not that Buddhism proclaims that it takes billions of lives to become a Buddha, in fact enlightment can be achieve in one single life time (I think the minimal time according to most traditions is 21 days). Of course it can take several eons but there's nothing preventing someone to achieve it faster.
Here and on the nature of Buddha there are important differences between the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions (as for example Mahayana believe that Buddha was already a Boddhisatva while Theravada don't, they believe he actually achieve Buddhahoor in one lifetime. I think Theravadas for example do not accept the Jakata tales a canonincal for this reason). Another different is that Tibetan Buddhism considers that there are always 6000 years between one Great Buddha (Tatagatha) and another which means that could not be billions of years between Gautama and Dipankara (however different schoold do handle different time periods between the two).

@@ElOchentero Video writer here-- Agreed that many Buddhist traditions think that it can take followers as short as one lifetime to achieve awakening. But the jataka stories generally portray Gautama Buddha as having taken many, many lifetimes to have reached his final birth, which seems to be agreed to by all traditions.

One crucial element to the Siddhartha Gautama origin story is that his parents received revelations that their son would become a great sage. So they purposefully kept Siddhartha sheltered and "in the dark" about the miseries of the world.

That adds credibility to the story. Normally even a privileged (in the traditional sense) person would be told or even observe the facts of aging and death within their own extended family. It would take a special effort to keep someone that ignorant.

Sambridha Thapa it’s part of a much larger prophecy that exists as well, between every Buddha spawn there is a world empire that ruled by Chakravarti’s. A Chakravarti cannot exist at the same time a Buddha exists, hence why the King did not want his son to become a sage as he wanted his son to forge a World Empire as Atlas did with Poseidon’s Atlantis prior to the Younger Dryas Impact (10,000BCE) and as Ikshvaku did with Manu’s Surya Vamsa after (8000BCE-2000BCE). Younger Dryas Impact being a cataclysmic comet impact detailed in Gobekli Tepe inscription which created Meltwater Pulses that rose sea levels by 400’, submerging continents such as Azores (Atlantis), and Sundaland (Lemuria) while shrinking the coastlines (East US/West India). If you look on Google earth, every light blue area in the ocean was land before this impact.

I have a master's in Buddhist Studies. Throughout the video, I kept saying "Oh, I hope he mentions X" or "I hope he introduces some nuance about this issue" or "I hope he contrasts the academic and the traditional understanding of the Buddha's life" and each time you did. Of course, there are many more details and uncertainties of the life of the Buddha that you could have gone into, but for a short UA-cam video, I think you did an excellent job. Also, if you plan do do a video on Theravada Buddhism, my area of specialty, I'll be happy to point you towards some resources and scholars of note :)

I think one of my favorite things about the Buddha's story is that he gave various teachers and paths a good go, but once he realized they weren't working for him, he tried something else instead of engaging in sunk cost fallacy. It's a good lesson about being self-aware enough to know that you have genuinely given something your best shot and it's okay to move on.

Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic.

In the story about Siddhartha being sheltered, he also is sheltered for a reason. His parents were told by a sage that their son will be either the greatest king, or the greatest monk.
His father was terrified of the prospect of his son leaving him, had ordered that all suffering was to be removed from the palace.

definitely some abstract cultural mix ins over the centuries, mostly with how it views women. luckily neo-buddhism has slowly approached that the differences between men and women are very arbitrary. the idea that women are born into extra suffering because of the reproductive cycle is easy to justify, but them dying and having to cross a river of period blood with lost fetuses everywhere seems a bit out dated 😥

I grew up in Thailand, and the widely practiced version of Buddhism there is Theravada, which has been merged with Animism, meaning there is a strong belief in evil spirits that can harm humans, and many rituals to ward off or appease those spirits. Most houses around Chiang Mai where I grew up would have some kind of spirit house on a pillar or shrine where offerings would traditionally be made to spirits who may be around your home. It’s hard to say how much of the population of Thailand believes in the demonology side of this version, but over 90% of the country’s people identify as Theravada Buddhists, and beautiful temples ordained with depictions of the thinner, meditative Buddha can be found all over.

I'll give you a dose of Indian Buddhism.

Then he will be what we called Buddha means there won't be anymore reincarnation. One God day is equal to 72 yrs of human being years. Reincarnation into a God realm is when someone did tons and tons of good deeds. Then that person will have the best karma and born in the God realm.

It’s very different from the ideas talked about in this video, and is more than anything a system for remembering one’s ancestors, especially your parents and grandparents. Cycle of rebirth of all living beings(which is one of the fundamental aspect of Buddhism) and how Buddha can see past lives. There are no stories about Buddha doing miracles. One of the the ultimate stages of meditation is “Vipasyana” which is extremely difficult to achieve and it’s said that Siddharth Gautam attained it and could stay in Vipsayana stage forever. There is a reason for that. Alot of what people forget is That Prince Sidhartha(buddha) lived in what Biblical literature refers to as the Silent Years. No active prophets, Little to no Temples left from the old world that that actually functioned properly. Basically no spirituality or religious doctrines for him to build on when he himself became spiritually minded. Plese contact me about this on account of your empathy for his story shows that you understand the spiritual anguish and frustration he must have felt with little to no spirit in the world at the time. That is why the more I come to respect him as a person, the more I come to disrespect modern buddhism and vice versa. Considering the lack of example. Im suprised he gained the wisdom that he did. I think it worked for him mostly because his self-discovery was more driven from hatred for the wicked world and it's distractions thaan it was a love/seeking for something more out there. I respect that greatly.

As a religion Buddhism actually helped me to think logically, keeping religious reasoning off my head, see beyond what people tell what is right and wrong, then prove anything through facts and first hand experience. Ehipassiko is my form of social ascension.

"The Buddha came at a time of great religious decadence and misuse in his own nation. And though he was born a prince, he had to give that up, you see. But he also had to give up the life of a pure ascetic because he realized that neither was really the correct pathway. He had to build a spiritual practice that was apart from all of the mythology and idolatry and hierarchical misuse of the religious practices that were so prevalent in his time, and in so many parts of the world at that time, with the emphasis on inner development, the emphasis on purifying and clarifying the mind, the emphasis upon reaching a higher ethical understanding about being in the world.
What you must understand here is that he lived at a time when social change and progress were really not possible. It was a religion for building the inner life, not for impacting the outer life essentially, not directly. Because at that period of time, it was not possible to create real social progress. That would have to wait until later eras, and the Messengers of later eras would emphasize this because they were living at such a time when that was possible."
A quote from The New Message from God teaching entitled *Buddha and the New Message from God*

    • @oneworldonehome
      @oneworldonehome 3 роки тому +8

"What is so important to understand here-because his teaching has different interpretations, different schools of thought-is that no matter how much you prepare spiritually, no matter how clear your mind can become, no matter how great your capacity for experiencing a greater reality, you must return to the world to serve.
The end point of all spiritual practice is not bliss and ecstasy. It is service, contribution. For the Messengers this is always the case. But for you it is the case as well. For you were sent here to serve in a far lesser capacity, certainly. But the emphasis is still the same.
It is not what you believe that is important. It is what you serve, what you study, what you reinforce within yourself and encourage in others. That is your religious practice, you see. And all religious practices, no matter how simple or extravagant they might seem, are all to prepare you, in essence, to be able to live like this."

Good stuff, you skipped most of the interactions with Mara (one of my favorite parts is when all of Maras armies shoot weapons at the Buddha and he raises his hands and they all turn to flowers and drop at his feet), but of course it’s a short video.

Those are mythologies representations of Buddha fighting his inner desires (Mara)

@@ussinussinongawd516 of course,, that’s why Mara first attempts to have Buddha seduced by Mara’s beautiful daughters, then frightened and attacked by armies and then succumb to doubt by Maras questions; attachment, aversion, ignorance and self-clinging (and pride and jealousy) are all overcome by the Buddha.

Many ppl including Buddhists think it's a personification of desire that's not true.. mara is a celestial being in 6 th paranimitta vasavatti heaven...

@@thisulwickramarachchi2380 I would say that Mara is both a celestial being as well as a metaphor.
Of course, if we going to be technical, we are here talking about devaputra-Mara, but there are outer, inner and secret maras and Shakyamuni overcame them all.
But it’s true, if imagine that the arrows of Maras hordes are JUST a metaphor, then we’re making a mistake.

I enjoyed your video and also hope you will focus on the Theravada tradition at some point. Like any other formalized religious path the offshoots tend to add a great deal to the scriptures in an effort to promote their own dogma. Mahayana forms have strayed quite a distance from the core teachings while still holding to some of the main or basic beliefs. I don’t have an institutional understanding in Dhamma, my understanding comes from from studying the Pali canon and being a part of the Thai Forest tradition Sangha. I ordained twice for very short periods of time and maintained a meditation practice for many years with formal and personal retreats. Most lay Buddhists have no idea what the actual Buddha taught and leave that up to the monks. Not all monks delve into the practice very deeply and fewer yet learn enough of the Pali to wrestle with the meaning lost through translation and obvious later additions. You are right that life is a cycle and not a straight line. There is no definable beginning conditioned reality. That which we can experience is “ not self “ and is a part of suffering. Let go and just “ be “ and you realize that freedom is not something you gain as an individual ego. It is the indescribable infinite possibility without the limits of time or space that is the core reality to all existence. Here is a small quote from the Kaccayanagota Sutta:
By & large, Kaccayana, this world is supported by (takes as its object) a polarity, that of existence & non-existence. But when one sees the origination of the world as it actually is with right discernment, 'non-existence' with reference to the world does not occur to one. When one sees the cessation of the world as it actually is with right discernment, 'existence' with reference to the world does not occur to one.
"By & large, Kaccayana, this world is in bondage to attachments, clingings (sustenances), & biases. But one such as this does not get involved with or cling to these attachments, clingings, fixations of awareness, biases, or obsessions; nor is he resolved on 'my self.' He has no uncertainty or doubt that just stress, when arising, is arising; stress, when passing away, is passing away. In this, his knowledge is independent of others. It's to this extent, Kaccayana, that there is right view.
"'Everything exists': That is one extreme. 'Everything doesn't exist': That is a second extreme. Avoiding these two extremes, the Tathagata teaches the Dhamma via the middle:
