      lort88 Because it's ... funny? Crossfit HQ plays that clip often in Crossfit vids. Anyone with a sense of humor would, at least, chuckle hearing him spazz out like that. Lighten. Up. Bro.

    I take it we'll be changing the wall ball standard from a 10 foot target for everyone to an equal distance above each athlete's outstretched hands then, making it relative and equitable?

  • @YogKaim

    That's a no rep? He was fully stretched. That line clearly was marked too high.

    • @tallcip65
      @tallcip65 9 років тому +6

      I agree. The lines should have been marked lower. I bet both redo this workout and I bet there will be tons of inflated scores from people not getting no repped at their boxes.

    • @ryancrawcour1567
      @ryancrawcour1567 9 років тому

      hmong mncom ummm, no, it just means his hands were too wide. those lines were set up for each athlete at a standard. bring your hands closer together and your feet will go higher.

    • @ryancrawcour1567
      @ryancrawcour1567 9 років тому

      tallcip65 no, those lines were set based on each individual athlete. the lines aren't too high, his hands were too far apart which makes a HSPU easier. Bring your hands closer together and your feet will go higher.

    • @tallcip65
      @tallcip65 9 років тому +1

      Yeah but there has never been a standard set for any movement that would determine the width of your hand placement, grip, stance etc. The placing of the thumbs together while standing to set the line does not take into account the differences in our body structures. My shoulder are very wide compared to my hips. If I stand with my feet at hip width but turn upside down and stand on my hands at shoulder width the mark will not match. Id have to do hspus with a narrower than shoulder width hand placement to reach my mark.

    • @tallcip65
      @tallcip65 9 років тому

      And vice versa. If your hips are very wide compared to your shoulders you get to stand with a short wide base to set your mark while performing the hspus on a narrower taller base. Giving you an advantage.

    Fucking bullshit. Josh did like a million reps without stopping. The standard didnt work. I dont think the measuring and 3 inches makes sense. Granted its a hard movement to judge but cmon josh got screwed.

    • @ryancrawcour1567
      @ryancrawcour1567 9 років тому +1

      Eric Nord because he had his hands too wide making the HSPU easier. bring your hands in and your legs go higher.

    • @Worthlessstocks
      @Worthlessstocks 9 років тому

      Ryan CrawCour I dont know if his hands were that much wider the scotts. Just seemed that Scott could easily get over the tape while bridges was holding his pushup longer and straining to get there. I think the arch in the back killed him later on, but the position of the tape and your judges strictness is going to be huge. Scott did a good job I just want to see bridges do better.

    • @Worthlessstocks
      @Worthlessstocks 9 років тому

      Ryan CrawCour If you pause it at 34:17 you can see that scotts hands really cant go much wider and he has an arch in his back but his feet are still above the line.Only one workout, im sure it will play out fine.

    • @senorgato70
      @senorgato70 9 років тому +1

      Well, if you watch the first two rounds, Josh's feet were as comfortably over the line as Scott's were. After that, his form changed, whether that was hand position and/or body bend. I think the standard if just going to enforce consistent, stricter form for this exercise.

  • @btdean02

    Perhaps the measuring stance should have been with feet at shoulder width instead of hip width. I think that would have made the margin a little easier for the judges to see.

    I just did 15.4 in my box and this standard screwed me just like it screwed Josh. I can bounce out 20 "usual" HSPU easily but THIS....is just a different world. I had to stretch my body so much, it just felt unnatural -.-

  • @senorgato70
    @senorgato70 9 років тому

    A lot of strong opinions on the handstand pushup line. Josh was able to clear it early, then his form seemed to change, which changed his heel position. And, based on the standard, it looks like he should have gotten tons more no-reps then he actually did.

    • @carson8013
      @carson8013 9 років тому

      Its a crossfit workout not a bodybuilding/powerlifting workout. The point is getting the reps as fast and efficiently as possible in the time. So strict hspu are pointless.

    • @Maino88
      @Maino88 9 років тому

      'The point is getting reps as fast an efficiently as possible'.
      Understand that. What I'm questioning is the physical merits of putting an upwards hip thrust into a handstand push up. Crossfit HQ emphasises functionality. I cannot see the functional use of putting in such a hip thrust into what should be an exercise to develop shoulder strength.
      Some things just shouldn't be kipped.

    • @Maino88
      @Maino88 9 років тому +2

      CrossFit® Thanks for engaging. Probably just by looking at what the particular exercise is intended to develop or benefit. The only possibly reason for kipping a handstand pushup is to turn it into something you can do for high reps, i.e. to gas you. So by adding the kip we're turning the handstand pushup into a cardio workout. Is that really getting the best out of a handstand pushup? Would you kip a regular pushup? No, of course not. A tight core is crucial to good pushup form, just as it should be for good handstand pushup form. If you kept it strict with a low rep range you get the best out of what a handstand pushup is supposed to be a test of - core and shoulder strength.
      Same can be said of ring dips. What functional role does a hip drive play in a properly executed ring dip other than to allow the athlete to skip over part of the full range of motion?

    The tape line seemed about 1/2" too short for Josh. It was almost like if he's toes weren't perpendicular to the board, then he was too short. Definitely something new to get used to! Athletes beware, I could see a lot of video submissions DQ'd for that.

    Josh was hitting them fine until he started arching his back and spread his hands. I thought the tape was too high at first but after rewatching it was his form that gave out well before Scott's. This standard really asks for perfection so there is no room for Josh or Scott to cheat the reps even a little.

  • @user-kt8ru9zo9f
    @user-kt8ru9zo9f 9 років тому

    Far too technical with the rep scheme and the HSPU standard. HQ is seriously overthinking it at this point.

    Keep it simple.

  • @konfusus

    All these personalized measures are really in favor of dwarfs. If you are as tall as 6'6'' or more, it's really hard to put your arms in any feasible position at all without losing these 3 inches... that's basic anatomy and geometry.

      Jesus Jeffery I think since this is technically a games event he probably got told he had to use Reebok shoes. I think it's crap but there isn't a lot you can do unless all the Nike athletes turned down the open workout invites.

    • @tallcip65
      @tallcip65 9 років тому

      Sean Sullivan whats he going to do at the games in Carson? I think I remember seeing a video from a few years ago where they were making athletes black out logos on their lifting belts and knee sleeves at the games.

    • @seansulllivan
      @seansulllivan 9 років тому

      tallcip65 At the games they'll just make him wear nano's again, and they have to cover logos on anything else they wear that isn't Reebok. If you watch the behind the scenes videos from last year games Sevan talks to Josh about how he can't wear Nike shoes. I do remember a few athletes wearing Nike weightlifting shoes in the 2013 games without covering up the logos but I don't think that would be allowed now.

    • @seansulllivan
      @seansulllivan 9 років тому

      ***** In the NBA and NFL you have to wear a certain uniform, but you sure as hell get to pick your own shoes.

    • @seansulllivan
      @seansulllivan 9 років тому +1

      ***** It's different because they still get to pick their own shoes in the NFL and NBA as I stated. There isn't a sport in the world where they tell you what brand of shoe you can or cannot wear. Crossfit athletes having to wear the Reebok shoes and shorts isn't an issue to me but making them wear a shoe that they don't regularly train in is idiotic.

  • @ramanamanana5190
    @ramanamanana5190 9 років тому +1

    if the point of this ridiculous standard is really to make sure hands dont go wide, then why not just give them a narrower box to keep their hands in?
    Because the next logical progression of this is some sort of trig calculation to decide how far apart your hands can be during pullups. It's the exact same concept.
    And if the concern about short people having less distance for full ROM, then let's re-calibrate wall balls so that everyone is throwing the same distance from their outstretched arms to the target, place it three feet or whatever above their outstretched hands, so the target is adjusted for everyone the same way this ridiculous heel-line is.
    The point is, judging should be an objective, simple, replicable way to count a rep. It should not have to make it so that all movements cover the exact relative distance for every single athlete. sometimes you will be good at things because you have a certain body type and sometimes you will suck. that's life.

  • @bmccall30

    What is very disappointing is the music with explicit language. There are children in the crowd and probably others who do not appreciate that choice of music. I like strong music with a good beat when working out but whoever is putting these events together needs to use better judgement and evaluate their audience. In private workouts you can listen to anything you choose and no one has the right to judge you. But this wasn't exactly private and kids in elementary school deserve a better example.
