- Druid Arch - Elephant Hill Trail - Canyonlands Needles District
I've wanted to hike to Druid Arch for several years now. And this was my chance. Perfect weather in mid October, and a long weekend off from work. So Tina and I went for it.
It did not go as planned, and that's all my fault. I could put an explanation here, but there really isn't anything specific that stands out, so I won't waste your time. I dunno. My mood was just off and I was in grouchy old man mode.
I stopped and readjusted my attitude, because I try to save my complaints for valid things like people who say I'm wrong or those darn kids who won't stay off my lawn. And why waste a perfectly good hike by being negative. This worked, but it didn't help my lack of enthusiasm to record video. So......I just really didn't record much. Ultimately this worked out well for me since I enjoyed the hike, but it really isn't helping you if you're watching this video. Sorry about that. Hopefully the beauty of the hike comes through anyway, because it is an amazing place.
The Needles District of Canyonlands is incredible. The Elephant Hill Trail was surprisingly busy this day. I'd thought no one really hiked it, but we ended up having to park in overflow parking even though we were at the trailhead by around 8. The trail to Druid Arch has gradual gains and losses in elevation, but is pretty beginner friendly overall. It's really pretty, starting with views of the surrounding territy and eventually even better views when you enter the canyon toward the second half of the hike. I will warn you that there is a lot of sand when you're in the wash, but it wasn't that bad. There is also a short scramble at the very end, but nothing technical. Druid Arch itself is enormous and imposing. There's something ancient and calming about it. Absolutely worth the hike.
We even ran into a few really nice people who recognized us from our videos. Talked to one gentlemen at the arch - which if you're reading this, I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to give a formal goodbye before parting ways. I went to get a couple shots while there weren't any people around and you were gone when we got back. On the way out, we ended up meeting and hiking out with a really nice couple as well.
Overall, this was 10 miles with just over 1,000 ft of elevation gain and loss. If I were to do it again, I would probably plan ahead and reserve an overnight backpacking campsite along this or some nearby trails to make more of an adventure out of it.
Let's be serious, I won't plan ahead next time either.
By the way, I snuck a cameo in at the very end of a dude I'm subscribed to on UA-cam. His channel is;

He's pretty hilarious, so check him out.

Isn't it surreal to stand in front of? My husband and I just returned from a two week trip out to the Moab area, part of which was Canyonlands. We were able to secure a permit for one night in Elephant Canyon spot EC2 and one night in Chesler Park spot CP5. We hiked in a very conservative 3 gallons of water each and only used 4.5. I believe this was due to the cooler temperatures. Our first day we made it to our camp, set up and then day hiked to Druid Arch. It was just us and then another couple arrived. I couldn't stop marveling at it. The next day we scrambled from Elephant Canyon through and over to Chesler Park set up our camp and then day hiked the loop. We were treated to a sunset of a lifetime that evening. The Needles district is amazing. We are already talking about our return and loved your video and trip to Angel Arch. We love your videos. They really inspired us to do this trip.
Gorgeous footage! Neat Slot canyon.
Love this hike! One of my favorites. No words needed! The scenery speaks for itself!
Another stellar video with perfect music! Watching in England, never been to the US - but I just know it is the most beautiful country on Earth. Could I BE any more in love with Utah? - RIP Matthew Perry ❤
Love this place and love some Jerry Arizona!
Great ending, Jerry and Jerry!
Your video makes it look like such an easy trail... it was a very long and grueling hike, bring tons of water!!!!!!!!! It took us almost all day to complete!!!! Very worth the efforts of getting to Druid, just amazing... the best arch in Utah!!!!
Yeah, I didn't get nearly enough footage. I'll have to go back.
Druid arch is definitely on my hiking bucket list!
Mother Nature was sure cooperating with those sunset shots😮
Tina was doing a great job collecting those Palo Verde pinstripes😂👍
This hike is on my list. We tried to do it several years ago but the weather got in the way. We’ll get back to it. The “Needles” is one of my favorite areas in S. UT. Thanks for the video!
Your video is timely, I’ll be doing this one later this week!
Beautiful. But i saw 1 cloud, not another in the footage, lol. Im so happy to have seen this, thank you from Virginia.
Dude, nice work and yea, I'll have to steal your ending sometime, CLASSIC!
One of my favorite hikes on my last trip out there! ❤❤
Thank you for sharing another gorgeous hike! She adds to the list of one day I will visit this place!
So cool to see this video!! Been there, done that. Canyon lands is one of our most favorite places to hike and be! (I think we told you about Canyon lands a while ago with trail suggestions.) So awesome to see this! Thanks 😁
I think you did! Always appreciate hike ideas.
Perfect timing. I just hiked this one last week and thought it was a great, slightly intense trail. (For a Midwest flat lander). Loved it.
Danke fürs mitnehmen
LOL! Love that ending of there being two of you and you're talking with your alternate self! Great stuff! Awesome special effect! Let's see more of that!!!
Then you gotta go find the secret bonus video I put in the Water Canyon video description. Or the year end video from last year.
Verde hot springs is calling your name! Naked jacuzzi on the side of the river.....makes great video!! Timmy C Arizona 😅
This was of your best videos…..liked the scenery and NO talking…..”short and sweet” and photography is getting better with getting the shots! No talking or words were needed, the scenery did the talking😀😀
love that hike and the arch
It's a beautiful hike. And that arch is huge.
Awesome! Going in March.
We did this hike a few years back and it was fantastic! Wish the video was a bit longer...was Jons'n for a Jerry Arizona Druid Arch video!🤔😉😏
Yeah, the videography gods did not align for me on this trip. I want to go back and backpack it.
I’m here & you’re not. Sorry ‘bout that. (Sorry not sorry!) 😂 Scenery & sarcasm are the reasons I watch.
Wow wow and wow!!
Dude. You get around like a record. Wish I lived closer to those areas. Meanwhile, my knees are saying F that...
I've been on a tear lately. And my knees also don't like me much right now.
Your choice of music is perfect. I talk to myself too; it's okay. I hope
Thanks! And I'm not sure if it's good to talk to yourself or not, but I just roll with it.
You're there and I'm not. Yep, sucks for me especially since I live 2 hours from there.
Been there done that once, but it was cloudy. Much better seeing it on a sunny day. Beautiful video as always. I love Canyonlands and the Needles district in particular. But what I really want to hike to in the future and have never been to is 👼 Angle Arch. Hopefully in the next year.
You’re right. It’s just not a good ending without a finger from Tina.
Nice. Def. more impressive than pierced dong rock off to the right.
wow! so much. and some great memories...
got a laugh out of the ending.
My wife almost quit on me when going up Elephant Hill, but thanked me when we got to Chesler Park. Now she tells everyone that this trail is in her all time top 10.
Cool video! 👍😎
I was there last September, AMAZING hike 🤘 and that view from the arch over to the canyon you just hiked to get there is out of this world 🤯
From there, I took Joint Trail in my way to Chesler Park. Joint Trail is crazy! 😲😱 found a bunch of caves and narrow passages to play and explore 👍😎
Yeah, we definitely need to go back and spend more time next trip.
2:33 your computer screen has never looked so good 😍
Your channel has to be absolutely blowing up right now! I'll get a more legit shoutout out there one of these days.
Gotta add this one to the list!
It's a beautiful hike.
Loved the ending😂😂😂
One of my favorites in Canyonlands. The Needles area is awesome. Chesler Park and Lost Canyon are some other great ones there if you haven't already seen them.
Ha! I can tell by the profile picture! Love Canyonlands and this hike was great.
Fabulous. 😂❤
Top 10 hike in America in my opinion.
Hey, Jerry. It's Lloyd - the guy you ran into on the hike. I emailed you via your hotmail business inquiries address. Not sure if that was the email you were talking about. Happy to see you got some usable footage out of your trip!
Hey man! Did you get my reply? I sent two e mails back.
Jerry you used to tell us how long the hikes were and elevation gain and loss? Once again a beautiful video. Thank you.
Yeah, I wasn't feelin' the videography on this trip. That info will pick back up on the next one. Honestly don't remember what the stats were on this one.
Hey JA, just curious if you have ever seen any of Jon Levi's videos discussing rock formations you encountered in this video?
That’s what you go through when composing a film?! 😮
I’ve done Elephant Hill in my Jeep. Tough trail and area.
That jeep trail looks insane. Definitely more than I could handle.
Did you get a new camera? The tones and resolution seem better than I remember from your earlier YTs.
I started with a GoPro 5. I'm on the 11 now. And a Canon EOSR. So I've definitely upgraded gear and practiced a lot more since I started.
@@JerryArizona It looks like your camera is running in HDR mode.
Did you stop at Newspaper Rock on your way into the Nee
dles District?
Not on this trip, but we have before.
👍
Very soon!!!
You'll love it. I recommend getting a permit to backpack and you can go later in the day and have the arch to yourself.
@@JerryArizona thanks for the tip!
So you made that video eventually despite the lack of clouds. It's nice anyways.
"I'm here and you're not". Not true for all your viewers :)
It was nice to meet you.
