I had an old farmer humoring me one day and letting me take a look at his tractor, I saw a bunch of little dots all over it and when I asked what those were for he said they mark where the grease points were. "Only time in my life I've ever touched fingernail polish but one of the best ideas my wife ever badgered me into." Jotted it down in my notes to remember for the day I make the hop to my own farm.
I can still hear my Grandpa saying “Boy get the Grease Gun and get to working, remember kid, grease is cheap and Parts are expensive”

lock and lube connector, greatest invention since sliced bread and the toaster
when i got my first car. it was a 1984 blazer. and at the time i didnt make much money. so i went and got tools and learned as much as a i could about the blazer. and learning as much as i did and fixing the stuff i did. i saved so much cash by learning to fix it myself instead of taking it to a mechanic to fix. so im so in agreement in doing stuff yourself like stuff in this video. i know from experience it will save you money doing it yourself and keeping up on maintenance and keeping an eye on things.
Since I started as a student worker at the Texas A&M research farm this past August, I've learned one thing about tractors. Always remember to hit the clutch and the brake to stop.

Those Lincoln grease guns are great, well worth the investment because no excuse to say my hands and tired, I'll hit the rest next time.

That’s one thing that surprised me when I started my job, people didn’t know you needed to clean grease fittings. That has been branded in my brain since I was like 5.
Mike l enjoyed this vlog for it has brought back some wonderful memories and smells of my husband for he was a disel mechanic among other things. He passed away 19yrs.ago but he is stil in our hearts. He would have flipped over the rechargeable grease gun....definitely would have put a chain and lock on that one. One thing ive learned is what the military callls PMCS (previnative maintenance checks and service's) it will save you a boat load of money repair bills. Cleanliness of equip equipment a vital part.
Maintenance is a part of life when for anything you own. Heck, even our physical well being. I always tell my kids, it's not how new the equipment is, how you take care and maintain what you have says a lot about you.
"Maintenance is the cheapest repair you can make" "Cheap tools are expensive"

i had problems replacing the 12 volt rechargeable battery for my Harbor Freight Grease gun, tried out one of my Ryobi 18 volt battery, it fit with a Velcro strap to hold it in, boy does it work great
Hey Mike, a suction cup dart will be faster and cheaper than making a wheel for your project list tasks.
For greasing check out the G.Gun from Lock-N-Lube. No more changing out tubes of grease as you have a bucket with a pedal and a hose.

If anybody thinks Mike is exaggerating about dirt getting into hydraulic systems, well it’s a big problem. I work in forestry and we had a skidder come into the shop with small bits of dirt that got into the system, and all pumps had to be replaced. At the end of the day, it cost $49,000 to fix.

@@AustinMoore231 I work in engineering at a shipyard. Whenever we have contaminated hydraulic lines we usually do a hot flush of the system for days on end. It's a massive pain the the a**
JB Weld I just work with a few tractors but trying to get people to keep them clean is a pain. It only takes like 5 minutes but that seems hard to do. But it’s better than thousands of dollars in repairs and a tractor down

Speaking of maintenance... I think its getting to be about time to do the midwinter maintenance on my tractors.... oil changes, greasing, and getting the repairs done on my summer tractors that I have been putting off.

Diesel has that unique smell that sometimes lasts forever. I remember back in highschool taking my girlfriend out after working the farm. She was used to it but it seemed that I always smelled like diesel no matter how long it how much scrubbing I did in the shower. Take care and glad you had an easy fix.

Greasing is a Pain in the Butt. I have been Jonesing for a battery powered grease gun but do the job with pistol grip gun.

One thing you might want to do at some point with your loader tractors is checking wheel bearings. Bushes (if you haven't all ready) To check the bearings (if you don't know) is lift the front axel up and grip the tyre top and bottom and shove each way. Not checking the bearings can lead to the sever front end wear.
And if you don't know you can lift the front axle off the ground with the loader

Were trying to find a loader to fit one of our tractors. Loaders are so handy. Just started a new project turning a old round baler into a rebaler. Should be interesting if we can get it to work. Have a good one
Sometimes it maybe easier to get a tractor with a loader. Mine is old and rough but gets things done. I would like to put regular pallet forks on mine. But it going to require a trip to the metal shop to get them made to fit. It s always fun!
Cool video as much as some people hate grease and oil it has to be done, Tractors are just like us, They need they're daily checkups to, Got to help keep them healthy for when you need them for a job.

Hey Mike that grease gun is pretty awesome. One thing about the John Deere is how easy it is to hook up the attachments is makes life on the ranch a whole lot easier, also the plate is finally on it's way sorry for the wait

Hi Mike, nice fixing! But after blowing a hose apart just take the time to check the hydraulic oil level. Prob it's okay but many times losing a little oil and it might get too low. Don't ask me how I learned this....

Frozen water tank idea. Try a fish tank bubbler/Aerator. Moving water has a hard time freezing.
I have been doing it that way for the past two winters, havent actually penciled it out but the wattage on the bubbler is less then on the tank heater so it's almost gotta be cheaper I would think.

Mike do yourself, and the rest of us a favor.. PLEASE USE THE SAFETY STAY before working under that lift arm!! I know it's time consuming and a pain but I lost a coworker due to his NOT using the safety stay..

You should put the newer loader on the 6420 since you use it more often.
We have the newer load on our 6430 Premium and it’s very maintenance easy and handles the bigger lifts a heck of a lot better being designed better

I'm probably one of your youngest viewers, but amazing videos.
I use a 6430 most of the time.but to unroll bails we have a bail bed pick up. Obviously it doesn't work when it's draped snow or mud but then we just use the bail fork to roll it.
I clean off all hoses and couplers with carb cleaner and also spray carb cleaner in the inlets of the tractor and blow them out with air hose. I change my filters twice a year I can not afford break downs.
This guy does it all, from cooking a delicious breakfast for the wife and kids to replacing hydraulic hoes on a JD tractor. Is there anything this guy can’t do?

I noticed what I believe is the plastic netting from hay stacked up beside tractor in the shop. Do you save it for a specific purpose, or just general recycle?

Sorry if this was answered already, so many comments. No way to repair or replace that metal fence guarding the hydraulic hoses? Since it appeared to be broken apart already, seems like a very weak point risking damage again to the hoses and/or fittings.

Always use gloves with hydraulic fluids. They enter through the skin causing all kinds of health issues in the long run.
Being raised on a far and then becoming a heavy equipment mechanic I for over 20 years I can not stand the smell or to have hydraulic fluid or wheel bearing grease on me once it's on you that's all you smell for the rest of the day

LOL...."Repeat offender". I believe I'm 'offended'. Or is it, I'VE offended? Maintenance IS a HARD lesson for lazy 'tight wads'. So is paying a pro when the fix is over yer head. I have a friend that does lot discing to supplement his income. Even if he offered me only 5 bucks an hour for the time I've spent to keep his tractor running over the last 17 years he'd owe me a thousand bucks. Man, with a friend like that I don't need the IRS to keep me poor.
...OR you could have a big wheel with numbers and just put numbers in front of your Project List.
