I'm finding ones iv missed lol my eyes are balling with tears I put myself into the city and feeling so empathy. When it was good it was. I can see through my mums eyes a kiddy with my nan grandad etc. Wow. Beautiful.
Watch the video first. Click-on chronological pic recollections for reference. Add your recollections where I have question marks. 0:05?? 0:28?? 0:16 Most probably looking south, down Union St, with 'Ca'doro' building on left. 0:38?? 0:48 Junction of Trongate and King St, looking east. 0:58 Standing at Glasgow Cross, looking east along Gallowgate, Grandfare supermarket on the right. 1:09 Standing in Whitevale St, looking across at Bluevale multi-storeys, Whitevale swimming baths on right. 1:20 from Argyle St, at bottom of Hope St, looking east towards Heilanman's umbrella (Central Station bridge) 1:30?? 1:40?? 1:50 probably top of Renfield St at Apollo Theatre, Rockers queuing for Motorhead tickets (no girls allowed). 2:00?? 2:12 Carlton Pl, with South Portland St on right 2:22 The Blarney Stone pub, Caledonia Rd, Gorbals. 2:32 Eglinton Toll, looking north-east, with Glasgow's Star Bar (cheapest 3-course dinner in the known world) on the gushet. The Plaza Ballroom just out of sight on right. 2:42 The Tivoli Cinema, Crow Rd, Partick 2:54 Junction of Renfield St, Gordon St and Union St with stunning architecture of the Cadoro building. My ma gigged in this building and 'came into' some cutlery with 'Cadoro' emblazoned across it. My ma's still on the go (89), still has some of that cutlery, of which I have a steak knife.. 3:04 possibly London Rd, at the Barras, but I'm doubting myself - anyone? 3:14?? 3:25 Duke St, looking north to Paton St, Beattie's Bakeries on right (used to work for them) 3:38 Possibly looking south along what is now Lauriston Rd - formerly Crown St - with Caledonia Rd Church (Alexander 'Greek' Thomson) on left of pic. 3:48 Possibly Argyle St looking south and Jamaica St to the right, and down upon what would've been the 'Arnott's' or 'Arnott Simpson' store. 3:56?? 4:06 Gorbals, possibly from Crown St: the position of the multi-storeys would suggest this location. 4:18 George Sq Christmas lights around the Walter Scott column. Incredibly, just last night I was trying to describe these very lights to my partner (from Stranraer) 'when I were a lad'.. 4:28?? 4:38?? 4:52 Possibly bus station at Cowcaddens. 5:00 Byres Rd, facing east, with Curlers pub on left. 5:10?? 5:20 Bus station, Cowcaddens, with (poss?) Parliamentary Rd with buses, cars, pedestrians. Taylor Pl multi-storeys in immediate background. 5:30 ABC Cinema. Very probably St George's Rd looking west, with the M8 motorway behind. Currently The Q Club snooker hall. 5:42 This is Carlton Pl, facing south-west. The South Portland St suspension bridge to extreme right - among other structures - certainly points to this. The building with the steeple, and the one to the left of it, are no longer there. In fact, Carlton Pl today ends at Nicholson St which is the street to the right of the steeple building, whereas during the time of this photo, Carlton Pl continued beyond the building on the extreme left and ended at Victoria bridge at Gorbals St. The smart, landscaped river banks in this old photo almost threw me. What beautiful architecture and achievable civic pride we enjoyed in that era; yes, the rich/poor divide was greater, but a great many of Glasgow's citizens are hardly enjoying the trappings of abundant Scottish wealth today. 5:52?? I recognise it but can't pin it. The garish-coloured Ford Granada in the foreground, and the typical colour hues of the print dates to late 70s, early 80s. Will have to revisit this one. 6:02 Heilanman's Umbrella, looking west, bottom of Hope St to the right. 6:14 Had to do some detective work for this one; this photo depicts a fire in 'Grafton's' in Argyle St, 1949, in which 15 young girls tragically died. 6:24 Rutherglen Main St, looking east, with looming Ru'glen town hall. 6:34 Guess.. (facing south, btw) 6:46?? 6:54?? Could be Renfield St facing north? 1-way traffic suggests a major Glasgow city centre street. 7:06?? This is a great old photo. It's very typical of early 1970s Glasgow. That's a 'Bowie-Castlebank' dry cleaners* in centre of pic, it 'could be' an early Tesco supermarket to the left of it, and with the multis in the background, maybe a local will remember this place? Anybody? *"Ah'll take ye tae the %$*& cleaners!" isn't heard much nowadays but was popular pre square-go back-in-the-day. 7:58 Standing in Queen's Park, facing north-east. The tenements and church of Queen's Dv still stand, the smoking stacks of Glasgow's rich and torrid industrial period long gone. 8:08?? 8:20 The Roundhouse/Toll house at Pollokshaws. Dave, the creator of the 'BTJustice' or 'Astonishing Glasgow' UA-cam channel has a very informative piece on this. 8:30 George Square, Christmas. 8:40?? 8:50 Meadowside Granary, River Clyde, Partick. The largest brick building in Europe at the time. When we'd drive past, my mate would always say; "A lotta brick!".. 9:02 Looking east. Glasgow Police Pipe Band, haud-up the traffic while marching past the old Tron Kirk and Steeple in Glasgow's Trongate. Telephoto lenses certainly offer a squashed perspective; although the steeple and the pipe band appear to be relatively close to each other, the C&A building says otherwise. The pipe band is currently past the C&A building (until recently, the TJ Hughes building) and is in line with the 'Old Wynd' opening which is - in 2023 - in between the British Heart Foundation shop and the 'Savers' shop. You'll also notice in this pic, extreme right, halfway up, a City Bakeries 'Light Bite' sign; this shop was indeed a City Bakeries business, very common back in the day. Somewhere along the line City Bakeries became a 'Baker's Oven shop - and if you check the Google Earth street view of this shop you'll see the 'Baker's Oven' sign still on the wall (above, right of 'Bo Peeps' shop) for all years EXCEPT 2020 when it suddenly disappears.. Anyway, the Baker's Oven line was bought-over by - yep - Gregg's and they occupied the premises until 2015 when it was, and still is, occupied by British Heart Foundation. It has to be said, this unfashionable part of the city reeks historical architecture, but, as usual, this rich architectural heritage is fast-crumbling and unless the city fathers, or mother*******, do something about it the crude and greedy developers will simply smash everything and leave the citizens of Glasgow with bugger-all. On a lighter note; whenever we'd drive past the Pipe Band , my mate would always say; "A lotta polis!".. To be continued, by anybody with a decent memory.

It's good to walk in the shoes of those who have gone before us.
