I worked there in the mid/late 1970's, awful seeing the state of dereliction. Had some beautiful interior areas, including a Concert Hall where we Registered Nurses were presented with our Registration Certificates and Hospital Badges, magnificent "Arts and Crafts" furnishings...of course not all areas were so attractively decorated! Legacy of the pre-NHS days, when the hospital was divided into two "classes," one for the Private (paying) patients (with the lovely interior decoration) and one for the non fee paying ie "ordinary" classes, where the decoration and facilities were more...basic. Used to have extensive, beautiful Rose Gardens, looked after by the patients as part of their therapy. Had lovely walks with benches to sit on amongst the roses...those days long gone now. 😢
Do you remember my great grandmother Margaret Hanlon? She was hospital there (I’m sure it was there if not somewhere in Glasgow) from the 1940s, a few years after my grandmother was born until she died in the 1990s but my grandmother was told she died in the late 1960s when she didn’t and my mum didn’t find that out until the late 1990s after she had died and didn’t tell my grandmother cause she would have been too upset. We don’t know what happened to her between when they were told she passed and when she did and we don’t know exactly where she was buried. I want to find out more but not sure how.
What a pity to leave buildings to just rot. These buildings could house the homeless, and people in need. There is a shortage of homes to live in. Can't rent or buy. This is not only in the UK, but in the EU. Maybe cheaper to renovate, than to begin from scratch.
I worked in it. The surroundings weren't any worse than other old hospitals (Leverndale Towerview Unit, Victoria Infirmary etc) and the nursing care was excellent. So it may not have been up to modern standards but the care was top class.
Was a student nurse there for 9wks in 1984 so sad to see it in such a sorry state, remember going up the tower to help patients get ready for breakfast !
Scotland has more than a good share of these old " mental hospitals " . It is strange that there are all these large buildings, often complete with a lot of land, yet there is a big housing shortage, surely any reclaimed stone would be worth £millions
Most of these old buildings were bequeathed for the sole use of providing healthcare activities on site, this means that in the majority of cases the health boards will have to hand the land back to the original owners estate for them to sell.
@jameslewis6186 You've probably NEVER been in Parkhead , AKA : CELTIC PARK , HOME OF CHAMPIONS ,PARADISE , so stay in your cave , you orange prick .😂😂😂☘️☘️☘️🇮🇪🇮🇪🍀
Need these places back open too many nutters about .
Awesome video 👍 i work there the roof has fallen in more past few days
Thanks, shame it has just been left to rot
@@JH-drones agreed it’s a beautiful building
Are there any pictures of the interior? Any books or videos of what it was like?
This disgraceful waste of an asset. The NHS should be ashamed. There must have been alternative uses for the building and gardens
not just the roof last month found a way inside and saw that the every floor had fallen even parts were it was slowly breaking into the basement

🎯 Architectural Vandalism 🏴☠️’s… destroyed 👀 …
Would cost more to make habitable than new building
What a place! Must have been horrific for the patients.

Scottish Baronial style I believe. Stunning buildings. Now "surplus to requirements". Somebody's gonna make some money here....

We have mental hospital now the houses of Parliament lol
Brilliant title .
You just know that valuable land is earmarked for luxury apartments.
Like Leverndale was.
Went to visit the neighbor as she was in for a dry out for the drink it was a jail what I can remember back in the 8os
It’s an eyesore bulldoze the thing it must have been a hell hole for the patients.
