Yesterday they announced the passing of JD Souther, who wrote this song and so many others. I followed his career from the 70s, living in SCalif during the time when music was about the songwriting. Linda does this song justice. Such a loss. Rest in peace JD 🎸
Kids take note, this is how it's REALLY done. You don't need a flashy backdrop, annoying dancers, ridiculous wardrobe, or autotune. All you need is talent, a great song, good musicians.Just open your mouth and sing from the heart! Linda was phenomenal! You believed she lived everything she sang about. I think Faithless Love was the best song she ever did. And that's saying something, because she had so many truly great recordings. Thank you Linda and John David for a priceless piece of music!
Happy 74th Birthday, Linda, but GEEZ Sharon Ramone, could you *BE* more of a grandma sounding boomer? And I'm a boomer. Kids take note... sounds like my grandpa.
I think what Sharon R, said was hitting the nail on the head. Nobody can escape getting older. I feel blessed to have grown up with the music that trandcends all. The body of work we have to still enjoy, let it take us back, or remember how it was the backdrop to our lives, makes me feel blessed indeed!!! 🎧🎶😎🎇🎶🎵🎵🎵🤔
I've actually gotten to see Linda 25 times in concert over the course between 1973-2009 & this song has always somehow captures her true essence as an interpreter of songs who does justice to them like no on else.
One of the finest song ever written. The lyrics tear at your soul, they ache at your sorrow and bleed at the hurt within you. "Faithless love will find you, throw it's chilling arms around you". Ronstadt is the only singer capable of interpreting the lyrics so you cry, you mourn, you give up everything for this love so long ago.
Well at the time I was living in a music revolution and surrounded by hundreds of great musicians and songs and you’re right I didn’t notice how wonderful she was until years later. If it was different I might have went to Laurel canyon too, because I could love her. Hahahahaha
For my money, one of the greatest songs ever written, at any time, in any genre, anywhere, any time. Just listen to the way JD Souther wrote the achingly beautiful bridge to this melody, it will tear your heart out. And sung by Ronstadt while still in her prime... well, it just doesn't get any better.
You said it all...this must be the most under-appreciated song of all time. Just read this: Faithless love has found me / Thrown its chilly arms around me / Faithless love like a river flows... You know that the writer has lived this. Utterly beyond compare when sung by Linda Ronstadt.
Appreciate all these comments. Just an exquisite performance of an exquisite song. In the documentary based on her memoir, J.D. Souther recalls their meeting and cohabitation, but can't even remember why they broke up; he good-naturedly said you'd have to ask her. In the same film, the wonderful Karla Bonhoff explains their lifestyle made it very difficult to maintain long-term relationships. Like Ms. Ronstadt she never married. This song must resonate with people who live peripatetic lives. The line "Nobody is right and nobody is wrong," seems to reflect the fact that romance found them where they were, then ebbed...as a river flows.
@@lnl3237 I saw Linda's first performance at the Troubador, when she was playing with the backup band that would later become The Eagles. I used to be with a touring band in those days, and I think it was these three factors is what made lasting relationships so difficult. First, it was the decade of "Free Love," so even THINKING of "settling down" was pretty much off the radar. Then it was the DRUGS, making it a truly crazy time. Then, when you add the constant touring and distance to the equation... well, you get the idea:)
@@tiffsaver Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my comment, and for giving me insight into something about which I just speculated. I was born the year the Troubadour opened, and actually just tried to donate to their GoFundMe to help keep them open during this pandemic (Good news is they were no longer taking more donations because they had met their goal.). I was gobsmacked to read you were actually there for Ms. Ronstadt's Troubadour debut- can only imagine your first impressions of her and her band, given that you were a musician yourself. As I've heard Ms. Ronstadt and others describe the Troubador at this time, it sounds like it was the singer/songwriter version of the Algonquin Round Table in NY in the 20's. Something was in the air (perhaps literally!) that fueled the incredible musical and lyrical creativity of those young people that keep the ones still alive and healthy, performing today (Had planned to see Jackson Browne and James Taylor in a nearby venue in July until this beast arrived on our shores). Although, many of that era did not find that one enduring love in the traditional sense that they sang so longingly and wistfully about, they did seem to find endless joy and affirmation in making great music with their friends and fellow artists. I'm still tracking down songs on which Ms. Ronstadt collaborated or sang back-up! Thank you again for your feedback. I hope you're still making music in your own little corner of this weary world. Music has been a great comfort through these trying times, hasn't it?
Every time I hear her sing this song I get teary eyed. Linda had/has a talent unlike any other performer. Linda had a way of being a storyteller with powerful vocals that touched your soul.
Everything technical about Linda's performance here--intonation, vibrato, phasing, breath control--is superb, of course. But the whole is somehow so much more than the sum of its wonderful parts. That's where the magic--the art, and the artist--comes in. Priceless performance.
Souther's trademark coloring at "standing in the hall of broken dreams" and Linda's heart and soul pouring through her voice. We will never hear anyone like her again. Just melts me every time.
1977 is peak Ronstadt. A wonderful singer, and this material was her best stuff. Little bit of country, straightforward execution, top-notch band. Doesn't get any better than this!
I love music from every decade respectively, but I never feel the need to compare because they’re all so unique and different from each other. But it’s debatable to say what era of music is the best.
lovely. Seemingly simple but then a great bridge and a few changes on the out-section. Ingenious songwriting from late great J.D. Souther and of course - - Linda Ronstadt's singing!
A beautiful song sung by a fabulous singer with a great stage presence. Thanks for this video of one of the greatest singing artists of the past 50 years.
Listening to LR brings a peace within. Very few singers have the ability to perform a song so timeless and beautiful and at the same time make you believe that she has lived every word. Linda's legacy will go on and on.
I always thought someday I would meet her and finally get to tell her how much I loved her voice in all the songs she sang. I heard her voice throughout my life in everything I ever did . Her and johnny Mathis were my very first music experience as a ten year old kid . I was stuck on them for God only knows how long . My lil sisters knew all the words to all their songs too !!
The challenge for Linda was finding lyrics and melodies that could bring out the everything inside her. This was one, with a very rare deep, deep, depth and beauty.
I saw her in 1974 when she toured with Neil Young , and her back-up band was the nucleus that became the Eagles. She was just an absolute sensation and I'll never forget it . Thank you Linda.
Just Beautiful! Can't help but wonder why Linda and J.D. aren't together still. They seemed perfect for each other. You can feel and see her passion when ever she sings his songs.
What a talent! No big light show. No flashy back up dancers. Just a great band a voice that could sing the telephone book! No one could hold a candle to her. The best.
I saw Linda at the Wheeling (WV) Civic Center on this same tour in the summer of '77. As I sat in the fifth row when she sang this song, I swear we made ear contact. My life was complete at that moment. Linda was one of the most beautiful voices of her era, but always seemed so shy on stage. Some people thought she was aloof. I think she just wanted to get the songs right. And she always did! I think the snobbish, so-called Rock & Roll HOF shunned her for so long because she sang so many cover versions of some real classics. But in my opinion, her cover versions were as good as, if not better than the originals. You cannot dispute her amazing talent and her high stature in the music industry of that era. Linda's perfect voice is with us forever in the wonderful recordings.
People forget that there was once a time before music was visual. It was called radio. Also records. You had to listen and see the music's pictures in your imagination and feel them in your heart.
I wish somehow new and upcoming singers had to listen to the Linda Ronstadts, the Carly Simons, the Carole Kings , and Karen Carpenter that we’re so pure and powerful. ( I know about Carpenters overdubs) but her voice was generational. No auto tune....

Music is what is in your heart.
What's almost unbelievable, is that we were able to fall in love with that music, those albums, of all those musicians and singers back then, merely by listening. We didn't have any way to 'see' the performances, like we do almost 1/2 a century later. : ))
When I was in college, I went to a movie with my friend, I think the movie is called Radio, in the middle of the movie, Linda sang Love Me Tender, when she finished the song, I turned to my friend and said let's leave because no more reason to stay. Thanks Linda.
Rest in peace JD Souther...Thank you for writing the most beautiful songs... 😢😢😢😢
Thank you for that, J D Souther. Rest in peace.

Great song by JD Souther and the incredible voice of Linda Ronstadt.
Goodbye, J.D.. Lucky for us, you two found each other. Have the guitar ready when Linda's time comes. She'll take it from there.
Cleanest live recording I ever heard. RIP JD Souther who co-wrote this song. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. ❤
This woman has no match. She is the epitome of vocal talent. I adore her.

I know I have a heart 'cause I can feel it breaking. Linda will do that to tough guys. Gorgeous pipes.
People don't give this woman the appreciation she deserves. She was so far ahead of her time and so big in her time.
Tom Thomas She’s greatly appreciated. 100 million records sold. 10 Grammys. Many honors & awards.
Could not agree more.
We know Linda Ronstadt is a master!
Any more and she would have been a song writer! Beautiful voice 💖

There will never be another Linda Ronstadt
God I miss her! I'm so happy I was born in this generation of singers and musicians.
No dancers no fireworks!! Just a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice, and a great band.
And the whole naked body show......
dennis pardue yeah. I forgot lol. The songs stand all on their own, humbly well ✔ done, well 🌞 sung, without all of the bells and whistles
👍 Exactly.
The best ever ❤
Linda Ronstadt did it all: rock, pop, country , jazz, Spanish, Broadway. Nobody had a voice so versatile.
Linda was the music idol us guys loved in the 70's on. She'd blow these screaming, mumbling fakers today right off the stage.
+VANISHTHEWEAK as a female and of course a catty judge...she's the epitome of sexy. Also--no lip synch or wardrobe malfunctions! Classy all the way.
I still put on her music and enjoy it as much as I did in my teens.
Exactly. well said C Jones
Kenny Edwards on banjo and backing vocals. He was with Linda from " The Stone Pony's " onward.

Today’s singers don’t have this pure joy and talent to sing a song. It’s about marketing, their brand and auto tune.
