  • I love shooting this video. I do it every season. This was the 3rd season doing it. Usually every season I have to shoot more than one because I can not get all the varieties to be ripe at the same time. So there may be a follow up to this one as I have about 15 more varieties that I have to taste. Thank you to Lauren. I am so grateful I met here last year. She is a wealth of knowledge and I am so happy she loves the garden as much as I do. You know, Fellow Addict. LOL.

My name is Michelle and me and my 2 Yorkies Molly and Sasha live in the western suburbs of Chicago. I am in zone 5B and I have 4 gardens in my portfolio. 1 Garden is at my Church, Ginger Creek Community Church. 1 Garden is at my residence. I call this Wilson Garden. 1 Garden is our community garden that I founded called Batavia Community Garden. And 1 Garden is in Geneva that I call Geneva and will make her debut in spring of 2022. I have grown a huge passion over the last 3 years to “GROW FOOD AND FEED PEOPLE!” The only way I knew how to do that was to create 4 gardens in my community. In these 4 gardens we can grow food, feed people, educate, enlighten, and make more people aware of the new wave of growing your own food. I feel blessed everyday to do what I love and never work a day in my life. I do my best to shoot a garden tour of all the gardens every month between May - October. In the off garden season, I do all I can to still share educational/informational videos on seed saving, indoor gardening, worm farming, fall clean up, fall garden prep, cooking videos or remodeling videos. Then in March, its back at it with seed starting. If there is anything you would like for me to give you content on, I am always open to suggestions in the comment box below. If you find my videos entertaining or educational at all, or I piqued your interest, please consider subscribing to my channel. Hit the “LIKE” thumbs up and the notification bell. This is my GoFundMe video 2022. I am asking all my friends that understand my obsession with "growing food, & feeding people" to help me make a huge impact in my 4 gardens this 2022 season. There are things we can buy that will make the gardens even that much better. However, me being a "One Man Show" when it comes to financial support of my household, can’t always splurge. So, I thought since this was the first Birthday I can actually celebrate, (no quarantine, facemasks and restaurants are actually finally open) I thought I would do so and invite all of you to the DONATION PARTY. Please Please Please Like and share my video. Please consider subscribing so you can see what your donations will be doing to help so many families. Any and all help is so greatly appreciated.

I wanted to confess that I was the one who said “why would I take advice from someone who doesn’t like tomatoes.” I want to offer you my sincere apologies for saying that. Your videos are very helpful and it is nice that you have a friend there who does love tomatoes. I love tomatoes so much that I can’t quite imagine not liking them raw. You grow some beautiful tomatoes and it is really wonderful that you donate so much produce to food banks. So sorry for my unpleasant comment!

    • @GardenJargon

It didn't bother me as I know I was not trying to advise. I can only advise to somebody something that I've done before or something that I truly love. And I do not love the flavor of fresh raw tomatoes. I have to say they are growing on me but I still don't know how to just slice them up on a plate need them as a side dish. It's kind of yuck to me. I have fallen in love with sun sugar cherry tomatoes. Oh my goodness it was like eating sweet yummy grapes in the garden all year last year. I can't wait to grow them again. If I have to start somewhere small like a cherry tomato to grow into the love of a fresh homegrown tomato eaten fresh, then I guess that's where I'm at. No offense was taken I just politely tried to argue that I wasn't trying to advise anybody I was giving my firm opinion. PS salt makes everything taste better. Hahahah. Happy growing and thank you so much for watching. I hope I can share some knowledge this summer.

I've been watching a lot of videos lately about tomatoes where people presented and tasted them. And in each one, I was amazed at how they could eat tomatoes without seasoning them. I can't imagine eating a tomato without adding salt.

Agree, but they will all say “ they’re so good i don’t need to season them or they wanted to taste them without anything added…” nah
Salt objectively makes them better. Lol

Thrilled I found your channel! I grow in SE SD, Zone 5a. I do taste test videos too. I did 40 last year, this year I am hoping to do 50 taste tests, but I will have 80 varieties growing overall. Some repeats of my favorites...Hillbilly! Love to see other people discover it. Aunt Ruby's German Green is another favorite of mine.
My favorite small tomato is Pink Tiger. Also do some tomato breeding.
I tried Paul Robeson three times and it was not a good tomato for me. Oh well, more for everyone else, right?
I'll definitely check out your other videos.

Yellows and oranges are the most flavorful in my opinion. Except for the yellow delight.. I cannot remember if we tasted it in this video. It was yellow but very very acidic... It was a seed I got in an exchange.. It tasted like a red tomato but it was yellow.. And that was about the size of a racquetball.. very prolific but yellow, meaty, and tasted like a red tomato...

    Hi Michelle
I’m sure you have been out in your garden all summer. We missed your weekly updates. Your tomatoes look great. I only grew 9 different varieties. I have saved some seeds for next year. While slicing, I took a spoon and smeared the seeds on a paper towel. I have saved Black Krim,Kellogg’s Breakfast And Mortgage Lifter. I had to buy these because all my seedlings got Sun scorched. Starting to pressure can my tomatoes. My favorite paste tomatoes this year are the Amish Paste.

      Eileen,
Thank you for the kind words. Running 4 gardens and a non for profit are demanding. I love shooting content and editing but when my day ends at 9-9:30, I have to eat and then I am DONE for the day. I have carried guilt for not posting weekly tours but I thought, "who really cares?" and here you are with your message today..... This gives me hope that someone does care. I will get busy. LOL. How will my channel ever be successful if I do not stay consistent. I had a lot of sun scorch also . UP here everything was ready to go outside and It was still too cold for everything. I had to harden off 3000 seedlings before I did a seedling sale at a market. I HAD to get them ready. and I lost a lot to sun scald. IN A GREENHOUSE. (Just the poly one i found on Groupon) I had to put shade cloth on my GH and that helped. I just posted about the super sauce tomatoes. (9.2.2022 @ 8am) I had 25 plants and 8 survived. Sunscald. I did not think these plants were gonna make it. They did and I am impressed.
I hope you send me an email and we can stay in touch. I would love to send you some tomato seeds.
TIP: 1. be sure the tomato is almost too ripe to eat to get the best of the mature seeds. 2. soak the seeds with gel on them in a glass for a few days to ferment off the gel. 3. use a metal mesh sieve to drain and rub the seeds in. 4. Lay them on coffee filters. not PP towels. They won't stick. Although this happened one year and I just cut the towel and planted it in the seed mix. It worked. LOL
Eileen, please stay connected. You gave me new hope.
      Blessings.

I love all the varieties that you grew this year. Black crim did not do so good in my garden but I only had two plants. We had those at the church garden. Thank you so much again for watching my video. I'm just getting now to the comments. I wish they would come in like a text message so I can get to a more often. It's kind of difficult to sit here and go through them but I'm trying to do my best. I mentioned to get in the garden it's January 20th right now..

I've never even heard of that way that sounds tasty. I love Santa cuz it is the low-fat cheese I use it more often than any other cheese

I salt watermelon. I salt my water. Kidding. But, I think salt enhances the flavor of any food, including all fruit.

You will not be disappointed . I am so excited to grow one of every variety at my house so I can diligently practice and save all of the seeds from each heirloom that I plant this season. I'm so addicted to buying seeds that I have to cut at least the one variety out of my proceed purchase. I've grown for so many years that I know the varieties that I truly love and appreciate and share. I probably won't even look at the tomato pages in the catalogs next year. Thank you so much for your view and I hope you stick around to see the fun stuff I have going on this year.

Michelle! 🤗 I've missed you and your videos!! But I know you are one busy lady!! Wow, congrats to you on trying so many tomatoes! It looks like you grew quite a harvest! Oh my, l have to try that Hillbilly tomato. I also like the sweeter tomatoes and last yr l found out that the Oxheart type tomatoes are sweet and yummy! I grew Romas and sun sugar this yr as I didnt have San Marzano or sun gold. l grew a few others but they didnt do well. We had a dry and super hot summer and when it rained it downpoured so most of my plants got blight and the fruit split terribly. There's always next yr, right?! Hope to see you again soon if you have time to make videos. Take care and thank you and Lauren for doing the taste test, l always enjoy those! 😊👍

These varieties are not even scratching the surface of the varieties that are out there. And I had probably 15 more varieties that were not right at the time of this video.

Perhaps if you do not like eating tomatoes 🙄you could at least comment on the varieties from a productivity and disease pressure standpoint? Heirloom tomatoes are notorious for dying early due to disease. Many of them also produce very few tomatoes per vine.

Please don't use salt when doing taste test of tomatoes. It skews the actual results.
