  • Kelvin Harrison Jr. gives an electrifying performance in the historical drama "Chevalier." The brilliant Tim Grierson (Screen International, @TimGrierson) joins Christy for a review of the film, which tells the story of Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-George: a gifted, mixed-race violinist and fencer who rose to the highest echelons of society in Marie Antoinette's France. Directed by Stephen Williams, written by Stefani Robinson. Co-starring Samara Weaving, Lucy Boynton, Martin Csokas and Ronke Adekoluejo.

    I haven't seen the movie yet, but the French Revolution was a HUGE part of his life. For a time it was the only thing that consumed his life and played a major role as he fought in it as a Colonel. So it makes sense that the French revolution becomes weightier material in the movie.

      Right exactly it would kind of impossible not to have that be in a story about his life.

    Good review. The movie was really short and I think they tried to cover a lot of bases. Because Bologne was a colonel leading 1000 men of color during the revolution, I think they wanted to tie in that part but didn't have the time to do so. I thought it was good but too short.

    I actually thought the revolutionary/classism themes were not inly interesting but necessary to tell Chevalier's story. Just to focus on the race would have been a disservice to his life/the setting, and honestly cliche for American biopics.

  • @awesomelife3710
    @awesomelife3710 Рік тому

    Well, I did some research and the French Revolution was central to the Chevalier’s life. So the missed opportunity would have been not to show that. He was also even more of a protégé of Marie Antoinette than the movie shows. She took him under her wing, especially after he didn’t get the post as head of the opera. Chevalier would play for her and a small group of friends at Versailles. Also, I saw the mother’s role as far more than just checking in on Chevalier. She actually plays a big role in getting him move past depression when he was at his lowest. I give this movie an A. Gorgeous music, beautiful cast, excellent ambiance.

    Can we bring Tim back to review his favorite fencing movie scene? Also I'd have to re-watch it but I'm pretty sure Chevallier appears in the background in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette movie (as well as an actor as composer F. Couperin). I pride myself on knowing my obscure and lesser-known composers. I'm thinking this will be along the lines of that Emily Bronte picture "Emily", kind of true with dramatic stuff added in.

    it's hard for me to say, "it's not historically accurate," when beside me, I have a couple of comics pulp action swashbuckling, and palace intrigue french revolution era. One of which by Guillermo Del Toro's concept artist Guy Davis.

      If it was a piano-forte duel, Mozart would have kicked his ass!!. …But, seriously, not only did a Bologne/Mozart violin duel never happen, their respective situations at the only period where they could have met was nearly the reverse of how the film frames it.

    1:20 - All too Common English Mispronunciation of the last name 'Bologne' > it should sound like "Boo-loin nh" said fast.... no heavy emphasis on the last letter 'E'
    1:27 - King Louis XVI's France - Marie Antoinette was the Queen
    2:00 and 7:50 - I agree, the movie could've used an extra 30 - 60 minutes and told the fuller realistic story of the Chevalier.
    4:20 - I was also starting to regret paying to watch the dragging movie at this time-point too.
    6:20 - Napoleon also tried to destroy the legacy of another prominent Black (West Indian born) celebrity of France, the hero General Alexandre DUMAS.
    8:50 - My rating was 3 out of 10 ; I was disappointed it was not a complete life story pic, but ended up an aggressively fine full flair no-nuanced, history-romance movie.
    Nice review - thumbs up and subscribed 😊

      @@rogerarchie8332 I mentioned 'Dumas' specifically; I never mentioned St.George. I was saying that Dumas was another famous man in France, who was 'mulatto'/ Black - and Napoleon tried to mess his life up after he returned from Egypt, where the two had a falling out.

      @@BaronsHistoryTimes Sorry that I misunderstood your comment. It was an honest mistake. However, the trailer for the Chevalier film very clearly asserts that Napoleon specifically attempted to erase the legacy of the Chevalier when he reestablished slavery in the French colonies in 1802. I don’t know what sources the filmmakers used, however if you read the reviews of this film by the critics you will unfortunately learn they are repeating this. I detect that you (like me) honor truth and would be dismayed that a slander was being proliferated.
