Not as bad as Batman and Robin which I almost walked out. Even if the fourth movie was campy it was very disrespectful of just being the 1966 Batman which the older Burton films try to stay away from.
I love these comparisons. 4K is such an expensive market, even the price of the TVs are ridiculous, I haven't gotten into it. But these videos have me convinced I'm missing out. Batman Forever is my favourite Batman movie and this just looks gorgeous. I'm a little mad at some of the colour changes, as Batman Forever relies on its beautiful bright colours, the Nicole shot early on is an awful change. But most of this comparison makes me need this so bad. Thanks for uploading this vid, awesome job as always, super helpful. 👍👍
I saw the HBO Max version and its basically the 4K transfer since I noticed the neon light scene looks darker and I remember it being brighter in theatres in 1995. The colors look way tone down of how I remembered.
WB fucked up these transfers so badly. While technically they are superior in that the 4K has more definition and sharpness and even better color balance, they just slap a goddamn blue filter over EVERY. DAMN. FILM. It's not AS bad here as it is for Batman 89 and Returns, but it's what kept me from upgrading from the standard blu-rays.
Love your videos! Your videos help me decide if the 4K upgrade is worth it. Thank you for making these videos for us. Any chance on making the Toy Story trilogy in 4K comparison? I am curious as to how different those movies look. Thanks for all that you do on this channel!
This was my first Batman film iv ever saw so it has a special place in my heart .. definitely wanna get the other films too...not sure about Batman and Robin through
@M W I remember it from the theatres being way more colorful in 1995 which how I remember it. The HBO Max version uses the same dark colors. I felt like I was watching the older Tim Burton films unless they are trying to achieve that?
Thank you very much for the answer about the remastered Superman in 4K! However I still don't understand why we need HDR or Dolby Vision instead of making the DVD to its final version without these two... I mean, can't they just set the colors, contrast and all the other things like if there was HDR or Dolby Vision?
They absolutely could. Heck, I can get an image similar to HDR on 1080p. Just by tweaking tv settings. Using VIVID (which I usually don't use) and playing with the various color settings. Want that red/orange unnatural push you get with HDR? (I dont, but...) Then play with the magenta, yellow, & red settings. And easy to darken the image yourself too.
@@film-maniac ok, what are you referring to? i thought the 4K alteration was supposed to give more color, not less? please correct me if I'm wrong I'm interested to know :)
@@jens9473 Less a matter of more color than it is altered color. I can't recall the movie but I saw one that had a scene with green mist. But with HDR, the mist was a smurf-like blue. I just saw Batman 89 in a theatrical presentation 2 months ago so it's fairly fresh in my mind. I can say that the HDR version is NOT how the film looks. I mentioned the one-eyed Batman already. The opening shot of Gotham City with HDR darkens the buildings but the small city lights are bright & prominent, like Xmas lights. That's not how it looked theatrically. The correct intended look is without HDR. Others will disagree but unlike 3D which adds depth but doesn't otherwise alter the image, I consider HDR a gimmick because without it, there's barely a difference between 1080p and 4k on most displays. HDR provides a difference, even if it's not accurate. As one director told me a couple years back after his already-colorful film hit HDR disc: "They made my movie look like a $%#& cartoon!" Others can disagree but I'll stick with how a movie was intended to look, unless the filmmakers themselves amend it. We've had HDR, then HDR-10, and now I've heard of an HDR Plus! (Not sure if that's the correct term.) How many HDRs do you need? LOL!
Too many artificial alterations in color (HDR is such a gimmick) and the usual darkened image, but at least that hides one of the nipples. So maybe some can call that an upgrade.
Uh no, they made the film look the way it (and many other older films) looked back when it came out. The blu ray didn’t do it justice. Blue problem? Lol, other 90’s films like Batman Returns and The Matrix (and many more) had a bloody blue tint when they came out. But now some people, particularly those claiming HDR is nothing but a gimmick (smh) are claiming that “suddenly” these films are being given a blue tint for no good reason when in reality they look far closer to how the filmmakers intended.
Except that isn’t the case. What is *usually* the case though, is older films just come out looking the way they did when they first came out - and actually sharper than ever. But nice try you and all the other anti-HDR critics …
It does when that’s how the film originally looked liked. Yes, like a bunch of other 90’s films that are “suddenly” blue in 4K, Batman Forever is now looking more like it should. But of course, you can’t tell that to certain snobs

Whether you like the film or not, it’s hard to argue against its Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. Stephen Goldblatt did a really good job.
It is a gorgeous movie.
Exactly.
@@CyborgSodaCollects it sure is gorgeous. One day, I'll get the 4K copy of Batman Forever.

I wonder what lead to the colour grading choices of the 4K remaster
Best 4k clean up movies ive seen
I do genuinely love the new colour grade but give people the choice of both.

Why did they change the bloody Warner Bros logo from Dark Blue to Grey ?
Wow superb work in 4k
Nah. They just made it bluer.
The blue tint looks kinda weird, I like the blu-ray more
Oh my God, how did they manage to screw up the color correction on every film in this franchise??? The whole series looks so... blue!

Why does the WB logo look gray in the 4K version?
Because the HDR gimmick is an alteration of how a film is intended to look.
