6.4L Camshaft install into 5.7L Hemi and Cylinder Head

- After the 5.7 cam finally came out, the install and reassembly of the vehicle is a breeze. I get the 6.4L camshaft put back in and i show how how cylinder heads can be installed with long tube headers attached. So that means it will obviously work with shorties as well.
He is so overly careful installing that cam......
which is exactly how it should be done! He’s even more careful than I am when I install a cam and I’m extremely careful. Good work man!!!
Never force a cam in. It should slide in easy. If you're finding resistance, back out a bit and go slowly. Feel for it. If you force a cam in, you could damage the cam or the bearings.
Didn't go through the comments, but if you do this again, use a box end wrench on the cam bolt. It will give you the leverage to keep the cam lined up while installing it. It will keep you from banging on bearings and getting the cam jammed like that.
Great advice
Or much longer bolt

Love peace and axle grease brother!
Thanks for your time making an doing all the work to share this video.
How the hell can anyone dislike this video? ....great Video well detailed ,
That Lucas is thick and STANKS on startup. But good stuff. I took that 20$ spring compressor apart and bolted the the C part that pushes down the spring on to a huge c clamp. Cost me less than 20$. Those springs are no joke
This guys definitely lubed up a camshaft or two in his day
I seen people drench the top like if it was a buritto 😂

Quick advice, since you removed a cylinder heads it could be a much better and sure thing to replaced valve seat and valves guide on your cylinder head. ( intake/ exhaust
Your AWESOME 🤟 That's alot of work an maneuvering for 1 Man. When are u switching from air to coils ? 🤣🤣🤣 That's what I'm hunting for. Great Job
So I commend your effort and enthusiasm in tackling this difficult job , there's nothing like the school of hard knox . Please do not take this the wrong way , just a little constructive criticism . In the future do yourself a favor and research more thoroughly the complete job your attempting , possibly watch it done before you try it . I understand your a young guy who loves the automotive scene I was young once myself and made mistakes as well. I hope everything works out well I hope you did not damage your head gaskets or your PC seals because you did not use a condom over your valve stems. Additionally I did not notice if you replaced your lifters I sure hope you did ( if that is a NON MDS High Performance Comp cam ie ; 270 for example ) if not you will be tearing your engine apart again very soon , you cannot use a NON MDS cam with MDS lifters. Also I hope your following all the factory recommended torque specs. they are absolutely critical on these Gen lll Hemi's . Good Luck !
I appreciate the concern. Everything is going fine. The Cam is a 6.4L MDS cam with the revised MDS lifter. Everything was replaced. No old parts were reused except the valves themselves. Its been months since I did all of this and ive not had a single issue. Ive been running the Jeep hard as hell. Im spraying nitrous even and running 12's at the track. Once again. No problems.
if you're going to criticize, learn to spell. this guy knows what hes doing and he made us a video to watch. what have you done for us lately?
@@PeterMeixllovesdogs A little give and take on any given procedure never hurt anyone and good accurate advice goes a long way , and I do think he did a good job I don't see where you got the idea otherwise , and BTW you might want to check your own spelling before you check someone else's .

Whats was the gains with the 6.4l intake, headers and cam? Im want to get all that inn. Great vid dawg!!!!
I am thinking about getting this cam in my 5.7L what other things did you replace with the cam, are those a necessity
The comp-cams $129 valve spring tool is well worth the investment if you ever have to do this again.
Yeah I've bought one already
Ill be rebuilding my engine here soon.
WOW, This was an amazing job.

Thank you.
Did this cam give you any results? Did it mess with your vehicle at all?
The vehicle is faster. Pulls better throughout the entire RPM range. I'm spraying nitrous and I've had Zero issues
Great videos! Any advice I'm just starting a lifter and cam install in my 2013 GC 5.7, going back all factory just had a lifter failure. I'm stuck now at getting exhaust loose from manifolds so I can start pulling the heads...
Hey good video. How much you can charge doing that kind of work. Please let me know??
Are you in CO?
Does this engine run ok?
So what all do you need to install a 6.4 cam in a 5.7? Can, valve springs, head gaskets, what else?
Man great video I’ve learned some things
Cut the bolt for the pickup tube to oil pump you can sneak your fingers in there and get it started and use a ratchet wrench to tighten it
I did not have a bolt connecting my pickup tube to the oil pump. Nor was there even a bracket hole for one to go in. The pick up tube on my oil pan literally just slides into the oil pump with nothing but a seal on the end of it.
@@teammopar771 oh I see,sounds good,appreciate that info
I have a 2015 1500 ram with the 5.7. I also have a writeoff 6.1L Charger SRT8. Would it be worth swapping the 6.1 Heads, intake, and headers into my 5.7 ram? What issues might I face with tuning, ect. Awesome video. Really inspiring me to tear into my 2 hemis.
I was told 6.1 heads won't work because the 2011 and up use VVT and the heads are made differently your intake manifold wont bolt up right unless you use a special gasket made or I'm assuming switch to the 6.1 intake manifold
You'll lose power with 6.1 heads. The headers yea you should swap over, expect maybe 10whp and a little low end torque. The intake manifold is great if u plan on using spray otherwise not gonna help since u have a ram with comes with active runners which are superior one a N/A setup. Best thing u could do is take the crank out of the 6.1 and put that in the 5.7, then with some pistons and rods you have a 1000whp capable motor
Your ram has better flow than the other 5.7s due to the SRV intake manifold. Unless you're going to use 6.4 parts or other performance parts, the 6.1 parts would be almost a downgrade.
Good vid brother,I’m in Colorado too man,I do a lot of hemis,
Thanks man. This is an old video. Im now a fully forged 397
Follow up - - - I see your putting in a stock 6.4 MDS Cam good , disregard what I said about the NON MDS Cam issues. I guess that's when you say My Bad !

Non MDS is better, got my cam + lifters for my RT.

Was it any horse power gains and did you also need to buy a kit along with the cam
I have a jeep grand cherokee overland 5.7 hemi the camshaft of hemi 6.4 works and what else would I have to change or modify for it to work
So do you have to run a tuner with it I’m wanting to do this to my truck
Hey man just wondering if you know about what the best 5.7 hemi heads where I daily a 300c and am looking for budget upgrades
Found out eagle heads will boost compression and valve size is pretty close to the 6.1 heads, gunna swap heads and a 6.1 cam with a 6.4 intake and try to make more power than a 6.1 for under 2 grand
Should always freeze the cam first.
And like the guy in the comment stated never force it through the journals
. One question For cam, is this for manual or auto 6.4 also whats the part number ?
My truck a 05 ram 1500 4x4 quad cab. Got any good Ideas to make it run quicker ..also I have another question ❓
You have a pre eagle (cylinder heads) motor. So... I would look for a 6.1 intake manifold. I don't think the 6.4 will bolt on. The 6.1 intake is great for future boost projects. I wish I had one. Longtubd and a cam swap would be your best bet for power. Different gearing is popular with ram owners to get better acceleration. It all comes down to your budget though and what you really want out of your truck in the long run
@@teammopar771I got 3.92. Original gears.. Most def the intake. Sounds cool
did you put 6.4l heads on the 5.7l or did you just put back on the stock heads
Stock heads
I went through all the comments and I seen they asked you this already about this but to make sure you put a 6.4 cam with mds and the car worked fine ! So no need to get rid of the mds or will you recommend a 6.4 cam non mds
The Non Mds 6.4 cam is bigger than the auto, due to not having MDS, if you're out of warranty, delete the MDS. took me 3 sets of lifters to reapize the system sucks, and i get better mileage with all 8 than my wife's acura.
Didn't show installing the valve springs with that tool you borrowed. Also didn't show timing the crank to cam. That's the best part of putting it together. Sticking in the cam & laying a head on the block is easy.
Hey i have a question if you could help me out. Can i put a 392 cam 80$ on my Hemi without any other issues?
yes. you dont even need to tune it. You wont get the most out of the cam that way but it will work. However if your going to do the work yourself you might as well gather parts together and do it all at once the way you want it to be.
So how did it run? And what was your part numbers for parts?
Ok question so you did 6.4 cam with mds or non? Also the Heads were stock 5.7 heads or 6.4 ?.. I'm curious .. I want to make my truck run
Originally I did the 6.4 cam swap with MDS. I did put new lifters in though. However I blew this motor up. It's not a 397 stroker and I deleted MDS. I have a bunch of videos going over the rebuild
Which cam did you use? Factory SRT?
Yes
392 cam shaft part number? Thanks
Did you drop the subframe slightly or undo the engine mounts? Or is this whole install with the engine still completely bolted to the car?
The engine remained in place
Did you drop your oil pan putting the timing chain back on to make sure everything was lined up. Im in the process of doing the cam and was looking for hints
No. Check out my Oil Pump removal video
So I bought the truck cheap due to locked up motor .. and guy who sold me donor motor we noticed it had the selenoids with harness. So on so fourth I didn't know 3rd gen hemi s had mds. Guy was not honest when he sold me this engine, So now I'm stuck on that bid and I'm worried the lifters are mds and is gonna start to chew up the cam. And obviously my year of truck does not have the plug in to connect the mds. Then I would assume I'd buy a tuner a shut off mds . Or will the motor be ok with just mds not being connected.. just worried the lifter s won't work the way they should.
Or do I need to replace cam with stock lifters non mds? Advice please
If MDS doesnt have a way to activate, either being plugged in or tuned out, the lifters will operate normally. However, you're already in deep with a new motor might as well replace those lifters and the cam with non mds lifters and a new factory cam, or upgrade. Chances are the cam has already been chewed up anyways.
What all did you have to replace for this ? &’ Could you tell me the link to where you got your parts because I’m trying to order my parts for my 5.7 Hemi
Check mopar or rockauto
Cam job usually runs about 1200-1900 parts and probably the same in labor, with another 400+ in tuning. Green racing has good cams, comp cams appears to be on indefinite back order, and the srt cam is too costly for it to be worth what dodge wants for them now.
Hi wonderful video! I've done this before on a ram same motor but had some trouble with cleaning the block. What method did you use. Did you have a video of that? Some people say use a whiz wheel others say use a razor.
Scotch Brit pads. Wd40. Break clean. Lots of elbow grease.
Did you install 6.4 mds or non mds camshaft?
whatta pita! think ill just put a 5.3 with a comp cam in mine
5.3 with a cam an stall are animals
Like someone said about building a skyscraper with these cams, then Lucas gonna be rich after selling all plenty of cam lube because of all the cams and lifters failing on all the Hemis. Lifters are on back order.
I have two sets of good mds lifters now and a set of hellcat lifters for my rebuild
Did you have to change valve springs to compensate for the bigger cam? And nice details on this... thanks for sharing
I changed put my springs for multiple reasons. 1. The stock springs already had over 100K on them. 2 I didnt want to risk springs being a weak point for failure. 3 didnt want to experience valve float. 4. Its highly suggested to do anyway. Two hundered something bucks in new springs or possible engine failure. You choose.

Yeah I know it is. I took my time. I had taken time off for this project and didn't need to rush
What would be the easy way?
Will you need a tune or no I was planning to do the same
It will run without a tune. Trust me I found that out the hard way. Tuner flaked on me and I ran around town for 2 months untuned on bad 02 Sensor wires. The computer will pull a lot of timing and dump a bunch fuel which will keep it "safe". So technically it will run. It wont seem like anything is wrong. But you should get a tune.

If you run a 6.4 cam you don't really need a tune. Your truck will run.... but at some point in time you'll need a tune for it to get the most out of it.
Ummm I thought apache heads don't fit the 5.7 block?
A stock 5.7 block. No. An overbored 5.7 block. Yes. But in this video I'm installing a 6.4 cam. And the cylinder head install is more helpful for people with longtube headers. I just show how the exhaust headers and cylinder heads can be installed as one whole complete unit

Same architecture as the 392 just better material. MMX sells an adapter that will allow hellcat heads to work with a different intake manifold aside from the hellcat supercharger. That's the route I want to go.
Big oof on that price point. Miss the good ol days of finding heads at a junkyard for next to nothing
@@MR-uk7iy the next best option would be to buy 5.7 heads which are significantly cheaper and have them ported. But then you might as well just grab 392/hellcat heads at that point. You could port the 5.7 heads and even do a valve job and out flow the 6.4 heads but why not just start off with a better platform and work those over instead. Having the 6.4/hellcat head on hand and maybe port them later on when the funds come available seems like the better choice to me. It may take longer for the final results but I believe the wait will be well worth it.
I got a 2013 challenger rt with the 5.7 hemi with 91 thousand on it I put new plugs in about a week ago it had the "tick" before and it still does now but it goes away when I hit the throttle and every once and while you can hear a popping sound come from the back it has the resonator delete and I installed a cai it has a electric fan on it does anyone know if it's the valves that are shot or could it be the injectors since it basically goes away when I give it gas
You might want to check your exhaust manifold bolts. They are known to break and can create a false lifter tick. Youll need to do an exhaust leak check to find it. I had it on my Jeep with the stock manifolds. Drove me crazy.
@@teammopar771 could that possibly cause the popping noise also
@@JT_8283 Turn the car on. while its running disconnect a coil pack for each cylinder one by one. See if the tick noise goes away with the unplugged coil pack. If not move to the next cylinder. Repeat this for all cylinders. Which ever cylinder is disconnected and the "Tick" disappears from is where you need to start troubleshooting more from. you DO NOT need to leave the coil pack disconnected for more than a few seconds. If the Tick is distinct you'll notice quickly. just plug it pack in and the engine will run fine. From there, when you find the tick, take off the valve cover for the applicable cylinder head. from there check each rocker arm for excessive play. a loose rocker arm can direct you to a collapsed lifter. With help you can have someone turn the car on and you can watch the valve train run. you may be able to visibly see the problem. Expect oil to fly everywhere. If none of that finds your tick. I say once again to check your exhaust manifold bolts.

I got a ram 1500 reg cab 5.7 hemi been trying to do little things here and there. Other then a tune what are a few good EASY upgrades for the 5.7 hemi?
The most noticeable gain I noticed was putting the 6.4 intake manifold on. I ported it as well. I believe the 5.7L ram intakes have a short runner activation as well but don't quote me on that. next I would say long tube headers but that's not so little of an upgrade.
@@teammopar771 ok thanks. I have the k&n (hot air) intake on it just because I felt like it was sucking hard with the stoke breather and since then I've noticed my motor stays cooler then usual and you can hear it sucking air now like it almost turbo whistles. That's why I think the tube headers were a must that was my next upgrade. SO pretty much I can grab a 6.4 hemi and put those parts on the 5.7 block and it all fits to the point I'm not drilling new holes for hardware?
@@teammopar771 also. I've heard if I delete the clutch fan and install and electric fan it has a snap on the response timing from launch. Have you heard this also?
@@iamyzdemon5717 The electric fan will do you better overall. I actually have been running consistent times at the track even after hot lapping. I even ran my fastest time on my first run down the 1/4 mile right after driving on the highway and my eletric fan runs full force while the vehicle is running. The fan speed is no longer reliant on the engine RPM. A tuner can set that up for you. I also run a 160 degree thermostat, and with my high performance oil pump, im cycling coolant and oil so much that my engine runs cooler over all. thus resulting in better more consistent power delivery. Heat soak isn't a huge problem for me

With your 6.4l cam did you upload a factory made map or did you have to dyno and custom tune? I'm doing an MDS delete on a 2011 Ram so I really appreciate it!
The vehicle will run fine on the stock tune. I had to for 2 months after a shop bailed on me. And I had a lot more than just the cam going on. I ended up going with an email tune using HP Tuners. You'll need an Air fuel wideband gauge setup for that as well. There are two different 6.4 cams. There is a manual and a auto. Make sure you get the correct one. Good luck.
Thanks very much!
I couldn’t read the rest but I just did the same to my 2009 5.7 ram and I didn’t know it needed a tune.. how do you get it done or where?
Am I able to just buy a 6.4l cam and throw it in my Jeep summit 5.7 l lmk bro
You could throw the cam in it with nothing else it and It will run perfectly fine. The factory tune will work. How much of a gain will you see with it??? I don't know. But it will work. Should you do that? I wouldn't but it will work. I ran mine with a ported 6.4 intake, injectors, ported throttle body, full exhaust, cam, high performance oil pump, 160 degree thermostat, on 91, with burnt up 02 sensors and got around just fine. After The tune and the 02 sensor fix she runs way better. With cam swap alone you'll be fine.

Yes. I suggest getting new ones. I never reuse old parts. When I did this swap I Kept the MDS system. I never had problems with mds system ever before. I simply wanted more power with the cam while being able to have decent gas milage

Why would you install heads with headers still attatched?🤦♂️
Because if you have ever done this before on this vehicle you would know how much of a pain in the ass it is to fish headers up underneath the vehicle. Let alone get all the bolts in as well. This method is WAY easier.

What lifters did you go with?
Good question
Hey I'm loving your videos especially the first track ones where your excitement is obvious I'd be the same way! I have the same vehicle. I got to ask a question and I don't want to seem smart-ass about it. I've noticed since the start you've been upgrading the 5.7 with 6.4 parts wherever possible. Is there any reason why you didn't just start out with the SRT or Trailhawk in the first place and upgrade from there? I know there is a jump in cost but these parts can't be exactly cheap especially with all your hard labor included? Are you not trying to make the 5.7 into a 'ghost' SRT with all this great work? That thought occured to me when that lady jumped you in the 1/4 but you won cos she red lighted. I do get it would be damn cool to have an SRT race you and win in the 5.7 just for the looks from the other driver! I've only had my Summit for a few days now yet after watching your videos I feel definitely inadequate lol.
Thats actually a good question. I would have loved to of gotten an SRT from the start. The thing is, that when I bought it, it was in my area, in my price range, without a bunch of miles and i needed a vehicle that day, being my old yukon died on me. Everyone always ask "why didnt you just get an SRT". A lot of times, even used those vehicles are also out of a person price range. Now as far as my upgrades go, the intake ran me about 350, The cam, 79 dollars, I got the injectors for 180 bucks off a guy who was upgrading his scat pack. Thats the extent of 6.4 parts on. Now there are a handful of other things I have done since then, But its been over a long period of time. With everything added up that ive done to the jeep, yeah i could have a gotten an SRT, it just wasn't an option for me at the time. I'm in ot for the long haul now. I Blew my motor up and now its going to be a forged 397 C.I. / 6.5L engine. The block is getting work done at a machine shop, there ill be a custom cam, new springs, and hellcat lifters. I'm going to end up keeping this jeep forever, I have way to much invested into it.
Will this cam work in a 06 Hemi?
No
Figured it was 09+ thanks
Are these the 6.4 Apache heads?
No. 6.4 heads will not work with a 5.7 block
Team Mopar yes they will. You just have to have the bore opened up enough to clear the valves. I didn’t know if you stroked this or not.
@@jeepwk6.5L the 6.4 heads will fit if you custom notch the block to compensate for bigger bore on 6.4 heads other then that 6.4 heads will not work even on a stroked 5.7L block. multiple tuners have said it trust Me I asked a lot of tuners from companies like MMX, HHP just to name a couple
Whoa Weezy maybe not with a kit. But even if you don’t stroke it you can bore and notch (obviously some more here and there’s and gasket thickness ) if you stroke it you have to be careful with stroke length and may have to have custom machined valve reliefs done for the pistons. It’s not impossible so no I don’t trust you. But it’s expensive and not worth it. Mise well buy thitek heads and rods. Which is what I did. And yes I’ve talked to them companies before as well. I guess if you had a set of heads and a machinist who was willing to do work for free it would be worth it. I simply asked if you used the 6.4 heads, I didn’t see any info on what head. Could have over looked or not heard something though. Thanks.
@@jeepwk6.5L Your welcome and thanks for the feed back like you said I'm sure in can be done with custom work I'm just going off what I was told brother that's all
What website did you get those valve springs?
P5160074 Use that part number on any mopar parts website. I use SocalMopar
Could of just put oil over the cam instead of using cam lube you use that lube on flat tappet cam not hydralic roller just a fyi
With the 6.1 cam, did you use stock 5.7 heads with upgraded spring etc or did you use 6.1 heads?
Its the 6.4 cam with mopar performance valve springs with stock 5.7 heads
Ow I thought you were putting 6.4 heads on the 5.7 block. I understand now. The 5.7 heads
With the 6.4 cam and heavier valve springs.
Niiiicccceeee!!!
Great job! Enjoyed the video very much, just subscribed to your channel,I wanna learn how to this mods, can you please give me the part numbers on the cam and the lifters? Thank you!😃👍
Where did you get all the torque specs from? Great video by the way 👍🏽
A Haynes Manual. You can get them at auto parts stores.
Team Mopar Thank you!
Ricky Slatton check eManualOnline very cheap.
Team Mopar, on the cam and lifters, MDS are they still intacted? That us my direction , in the next few days. I have the Hemi tick, and it's my wife 300C.
After nearly 104K miles my stock valvetrain everything completly intact. I actually kept the old lifters and camshaft just in case something goes wrong.
It might be worth a look to see if an exhaust manifold bolt broke. I had a broke one on the stock exhaust system that would sound like a hemi tick. The difference being if would go away after the vehicle warmed up. If thats not the case for you then yeah.... Time for a cam upgrade
