When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I was playing de_survivor against some bots. I went under the bridge to get some kills, but fell into the ice. I got scared so shitless I didn't play CS for days
I really can not thank Stephen Superville enough for the tireless effort when he took the 747 map under his wings. This was a complex map and he got the in-progress hull reconstruction. Those lag-sensitive r_speeds and BSP w_poly counters were crucial for a multiplayer game, and he finished it up flawlessly with my admiration and respect. I can't remember who did the textures, he also deserves a handshake. So many kudos to the CS team and passionate tactical gamers.
backalley might be the only "forgotten" map with any kind of atmosphere that lived till CSGO days. Removed shortly after though, i still miss it. My favourite is gotta be the nighttime bunch, cs_assault, cs_Backalley, cs_747. Actually cs_arabstreets is probably my favourite simply because how much traction it got during pc lan clubs back in the day, now completely abandoned and forgotten
Oh man, I remember every map you mentioned in this video, so many memories! When you showed the winter one, it reminded about another snowy map, but with the cableway. I would never think of counter strike 1.6 as the game I've played that much to remember old, obscure maps. I think there is something special about these kind of graphics, that makes it easy to make a place in our memory. Anyway, great video!
de_survivor aesthetically appeals the most to me. I love goldsource nature maps for some reason with all those ambient sounds, they feel like a forgotten childhood memory or something. It brings back emotions from a while back that eastern european outskirts made me feel when i was growing up. de_torn just seems like a really good map which stands out but it does not come close with atmosphere.
I remember as a kid I was only playing with bots. And back then I didn't know about console commands. So, when I got killed, instead of the bot_kill command, I just sat there and waited until the next round. I remember rooting for my bots, and how happy I was when they won the round, lmao.
Damn I completely forgot about some of them but kept a vivid memory of 747, it's such a wonderful map pool. What we can take away from these forgotten maps is why they were forgotten, they all take place in interesting scenarios and have somewhat deep lore; also they're all beautiful maps but unbalanced which doesn't fit the whole 'esports' scene, what a bunch of wank stains the new comp people are, I'm genuinely saddened by their removal and the fact they were forgotten. Good work on showing them to the world! I applaud you sir!
There's quite literally another snowy themed assassination mode map that made it until 1.5, as_tundra. I'm pretty sure there were other maps in the betas that featured assassination mode. Tyler Mcvicker made a great video about all the maps that officially made it into the game during the betas. And there were A LOT of cut maps.. Also anything that made it into the game during versions 1.0-1.5 are also considered official maps. Since they are all technically saw retail release
Was about to post this! I LOVED as_tundra back then 🙂 And wasn't office snow themed, too? In the map changes, you can even see that they added snow footsteps sounds in beta 7.1 (around the time i began playing CS online :-P )
Yes there was tundra and also highrise but I don't remember if those were official or not. I know the server I played on continued to play on tundra after it was removed.
This really took me back. Loved almost every map in this list, played against hard bots because I didnt have internet, but man what an experience. Great video
Everytime you load into de_survivor, you hear that small "thrill" ambient drone sound before the game even starts and then right away hearing the bots spawning in and equipping sounds, i always loved that detail and it's so nostalgic for me, you also hear another ominous drone ambience when you approach certain areas.
de_storm is one of the maps that barely gets any love, but I feel like a re-made/re-imagined version in CSGO or even the upcoming CS2 would be amazing!
Oil rig was my favorite map. I loved playing it because it was like the only VIP map that wasn’t custom. Too bad almost no servers played it and the few that did were empty or full. I loved being CT! being the VIP was fun too with a good team because it felt cool watching OP team members protect you. If you were a good VIP, you always got props and something about a great CS player telling you to wait while they check the corner and kill 2 or 3 dudes was amazing.
Surprisingly enough, I know all the maps except for storm and torn. Back in 2007 or so we had 2 slow pcs in our house that my cousins and I would play cs 1.6 on. I remember going through the huge catalog of maps we had and writing down all the "good ones" - the fun maps that looked interesting. I distinctly remember writing down 747 at the top of that list Thank you for unlocking that memory
It's amazing how map makers just made maps they like to play and in the end find themselves in a career in what they love. Thank you for showing creator face's, for me it's just map but in the end it's much more.
This really brings back some fond memories. Especially oilrig and 747 were so unconventional, it was just genuinely fun and interesting to play those maps. It's sad that CS has become so hyper-competitive that there aren't any supported maps which are just fun and random to play.
Every Counter-Strike game gets less maps than the previous game. They only stick to popular maps and discard unpopular ones, which is a shame in my opinion. I would love to see these classic maps remastered.
Thank you for the effort of creating this video for all the old players! I played all these maps countless hours as a kid in the local gaming club and this video really woke up some pleasant memories.
I loved some of these maps, i would like to rate them here: Estate: This was MY de_dust2, fighting inside the mansion is very good and challenging. While i knew you can turn on lights, i never knew about the cameras until cs_assault. This map keeps my blood pumping as a kid. But was a pretty unpopular map for my friends though. 10/10 Survivor: this map traumatized me as a kid, i remember being scared whenever i got trap in deadly cold ice water and falling from the ice bridge. I only use this map to explore the large truck and that ONLY. 0/10 Airstrip: if estate was my de_dust, airstrip is my friend's de_dust. this was their second most favorite map, i honestly enjoy it but was pretty hard to navigate but nevertheless enjoyed it. 8/10 oilrig: i remember always playing terrorist in this map, VIP protection just feels restrictive as CT, you can't even buy weapons as a VIP which enraged me when i even try to play as such (can i at least buy an SMG?) . 7/10 747: another one of my favorites, love the details and the narrow space of the plane (helps in tactical decisions and making the map a bit more difficult). this is also my friends favorites as well (what is it with my friends liking maps related to airplanes?) 10/10 Storm: Just like the creator's history, nobody used this map, just used this to play alone and even then the darkness made it boring. ???/10 Torn: one word: SEWERS, honestly though i wish maps like this was much more encouraged for cs_go, encouraging more maps with multiple levels besides vertigo. 10/10
Oh man...thank you so much for bringing these great memories of maps.I remember playing all of them when I was a kid with the bots :)).Keep it up with your work my friend.
By far my favorite map back in the day was cs_Backalley ... man insane how much nostalgia can pop up when seeing these videos! Thanks for the awesome video man!
as_oilrig, that map brings back good memories of LAN party of CS Beta 6. Thank you for uploading this... I still remember the moment terrorist team wiped out counter-strike team but VIP himself, even though the mighty VIP fought his way with USP and his headshot skill, then miraculously survived even one of T team was ambushing at the duct with AK47 by the book. Both team so hyped up, laughed and applauded him :)
Hey nice video there, my favorite removed maps are cs_compound, de_tides and de_survivor. Man i must say de_tides does have a fair gameplay and it feels great!
@hvH, oh CMON bro... you completely forgot about DE_Vegas during 6.6 beta , remember? The diffuse bomb stage with slot machine sounds when ugot near!? Sheesh... 🤦♂🤦♂
This review gave me so much nostalgia, I played a lot of cs16 between 2006-2010 and I remember playing these maps in servers with the older zombie mods (before the zombie mod became overly complicated and full of op powers)
It's really weird seeing how every single one of my childhood favorite maps are forgotten now. Oilrig was the first map i've ever played on counter strike and its also the one i played and loved the most, followed by survivor and 747 torn. Also fun fact, torn is based on old Turkish cities and the signs all around the map are in Turkish. I was geniunely suprised when i noticed that as a kid and wondered if i accidentally installed aTurkish patch or something lol.
aw my god survivor and torn are the best man....... not only the looks but the map layout is amazing. I loved survivor when i discovered it had ice that broke down when stepped on and you start to freeze in water (lose hp). Torn on the other hand was another 'City based' map, like inferno, office, italy, etc but it totally had a different vibe. Especially when you jump on the broke rooftops to the wells and the truck, it was just awesome. I just wish if csgo is gonna release any operation based maps, i would love the theme of both torn and survivor, or somethin like that, but man, you made me cry. Thanks for making a detailed video.
I used to fire up 16v16 bot matches as a kid on these maps, but when I got Internet for the first time, mostly 6-7 maps were in the mapcycle on most servers
I remember playing most of these maps as a kid and even though they were not as popular as dust2, inferno etc. i liked them more because of their atmosphere. This was a really nice nostalgic video! Thank you!
I miss this PC period of my life. Back then i loved all of the maps in CS. Maybe 1 or 2 map was not my fav. Too bad after a while lots of mainstream servers only used and cycle just the "popular" maps. 24\7 dust(2). :) I started playing CS with 1.0 and the best period for me was the 1.3-1.5. With the steam the 1.6 was not bad at all but something is started to missing...
I feel the same too. CS 1.3-1.5 era was somehow better than CS 1.6 for me. CS 1.6 Beta was first realeased in January 2003 (along with Steam) and the final version came at september of the same year, but everyone I knew still kept playing CS 1.5 (that ran with old Half-life WON version) until the last day when WON servers were officially shutdown by VALVE in july/2004 so everyone was forced to go to Steam versions...
Games nowdays became so competitive which is understandable... But developers really should try and make something fun for the casuals. These maps, even tho they werent balanced at all would be a pretty fun change for some casual games nowdays :D
Damn this brought me back. 747 was one of the first maps i played back in 99ish. De_westwood.. CS_estate.. As_oilrig.. brings me back so many memories.
Takes me back. I remember them all, some really trigger that community server vibe meeting and playing with regulars in it servers we used to get with CS, now totally lost in csgo
Played a lot of airstrip as a kid vs bots. I liked oilrig too. The problem with 747 was that bots always killed you through those red curtains inside the plane lol
I really loved the Oil Rig map. either playing as the V.I.P or escorting it, going from the bottom up to the helipad was really thrilling and rewarding when you win. I just hope we can get them forgotten maps up until cs source. very nostalgic. also aztec was pretty cool too, the atmosphere and all.
I remember playing and loving all of these except for Storm and Torn, I never played those back in the day. I still remember some of the clutch plays on AS_Oilrig back in the day, sending out all the CTs except 1 to stay with the VIP and blind-side them with a quiet exfil was SO fun!
all of these map were not forgotten by me, in fact its carved onto my brain. all of these map (except storm) were my favorite map when i was still a child. every map has their own unique atmosphere. every site, every corner has it own memory for me. i still can reminiscing when im played on those maps. gosh i miss my childhood, even though im only 16 years ol, and i was like 5 y.o playing CS, but CS 1.6 were the most nostalgic thing that is still relevant to talk about til this day.
One thing i loved about old maps that never made it back in csgo (and even source, because god forbid we have some creative quirks in our sweaty comp game) is that in cs_estate there was more than light switches. You could straight up kill the power of the house and leave Ts in darkness Imagine breaching in with nightvision while Ts only have flashlights. So cool Cameras, elevators, moving plataforms, lightswitches, power switches. Oilrig, assault, estate, militia. Maps with interactivity to them that made things much more fun and immersive God i miss that
De_torn its one of my favorites, not only because of the overall map design, but because it has an ambience that almost no other map has. An active war zone.
Literally played all these maps ... I remember when I used to off by school , my whole evening used to play CS !! haha I completed all levels of CONDITION ZERO , and in cs 1.6 played every map ...also in de_surviour village part was also fascinated me ...
I love de_survivor, been like 20 years since i last properly played 1.6 but that snow crunching under your feet and winter landscape was very atmospheric! I like winter maps in any game honestly.
de_rats and cs_deathmatch is always nostalgic to me. I also remember playing versions of old CS that has a voice pack in Tagalog (Filipino) that says "Naitanim na ang kamote" or "The sweet potato has been planted" whenever you plant the bomb. Pretty sure that's just an easy mod but man, oh man, the memories of playing CS on pub shops is quite something to remember.
de_survivor is one the first cs maps I ever played at a friends house all those years ago. This really took me back. Great video.
These map os bast map :(
My first map was fy_poolday. Is an old map from half life as wall but was added later to cs 1.6.
As well fy italy is a nice map to play and enjoy it has chickens
For me the backally one
De_survivor was one of the most irritating maps of all time.
When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I was playing de_survivor against some bots. I went under the bridge to get some kills, but fell into the ice. I got scared so shitless I didn't play CS for days
lmao me 2
I was so scared of that dark frozen water too i loved this map as a kid
same, combined with the eerie bg sound but the map that scared me the most was de_747. That dark place with baggage and shit made me shit bricks
LOOL so me!
Me too lol 😂
There are still unofficial cs 1.6 servers where these maps are still played and they are usually mostly full
where`?
Yeah do you have an ip
Really? All I see is inferno and dust 2, and sometimes train
@@yakone1379 its been 2 years since i wrote this and those servers are shut down expect one but its a pathetic bot server
Survivor my favorite map. So creepy, mystic... CS is a phenomen. CS made my childhood more interest.

I'd say forgotten by Valve due to the maps never officially coming back, but never forgotten by the community for sure.

Takes me back. I remember them all, some really trigger that community server vibe meeting and playing with regulars in
it servers we used to get with CS, now totally lost in csgo
Playing 2vs2 oilrig was always a blast. You never knew where someone might be hiding and had numerous ways to surprise your enemy
Played a lot of airstrip as a kid vs bots. I liked oilrig too. The problem with 747 was that bots always killed you through those red curtains inside the plane lol
those maps are something like "i don't know what i am searching but i will know this is it when i will see it"
Great video bring back great memories.
brings tears to my eyes
I really loved the Oil Rig map. either playing as the V.I.P or escorting it, going from the bottom up to the helipad was really thrilling and rewarding when you win. I just hope we can get them forgotten maps up until cs source. very nostalgic. also aztec was pretty cool too, the atmosphere and all.
This video gave me chills, so many good memories back in the days hundreds of hours. 🤩
Thank you for this road down the memory lane, i remember playing these maps in the internet cafes more than 20 years ago, great times
very nice nostalgia, i feel cozy, thank you.
Fantastic video, love the facts about the maps and fun little details. Subbed!
Amazing video bro!
I remember playing most of these maps back in the day. Brings so many memories. :')
I remember playing and loving all of these except for Storm and Torn, I never played those back in the day. I still remember some of the clutch plays on AS_Oilrig back in the day, sending out all the CTs except 1 to stay with the VIP and blind-side them with a quiet exfil was SO fun!
As a veteran to this game i still play and enjoy the maps. I play them with my brothers on the old networks. I even showed them to my friends.
This video takes me back, I love all of these maps!
all of these map were not forgotten by me, in fact its carved onto my brain. all of these map (except storm) were my favorite map when i was still a child. every map has their own unique atmosphere. every site, every corner has it own memory for me. i still can reminiscing when im played on those maps. gosh i miss my childhood, even though im only 16 years ol, and i was like 5 y.o playing CS, but CS 1.6 were the most nostalgic thing that is still relevant to talk about til this day.
Survivor is my favorit map from this list. Thanks for the video!
I think survivor is my favourite too.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
I remember playing cs_estate / mansion as a kid. I really liked it for some reason.
One thing i loved about old maps that never made it back in csgo (and even source, because god forbid we have some creative quirks in our sweaty comp game) is that in cs_estate there was more than light switches. You could straight up kill the power of the house and leave Ts in darkness
Imagine breaching in with nightvision while Ts only have flashlights. So cool
Cameras, elevators, moving plataforms, lightswitches, power switches. Oilrig, assault, estate, militia. Maps with interactivity to them that made things much more fun and immersive
God i miss that
De_torn its one of my favorites, not only because of the overall map design, but because it has an ambience that almost no other map has. An active war zone.
Survivor and airstrip were the first two maps for me, such good memories!
The approach to create something realistic really made the maps stand out and were a blast to play back then.
I miss the plethora of different maps we used to play. Not just the ones mentioned here, but all of the different user made maps that were available.
wtf man I love them all when I playing this game in 2014 - 2015
You forgot backalley, I love that map.
I loved backalley! The only reason it wasn’t included is because it did get featured in later CS games (CSGO had it early on)
Very nice video and very informative thx 4 ur work
Literally played all these maps ... I remember when I used to off by school , my whole evening used to play CS !! haha I completed all levels of CONDITION ZERO , and in cs 1.6 played every map ...also in de_surviour village part was also fascinated me ...
I feel sad that Valve deleted old maps like Aztec from CSGO. My great old times are gone. :(
That's insane the fact I still remember every detail of those map
I love de_survivor, been like 20 years since i last properly played 1.6 but that snow crunching under your feet and winter landscape was very atmospheric!
I like winter maps in any game honestly.
i remember playing 747 A LOT back in the 2010's or so with my friends on LAN's :')
Loved this trip down the memory lane! 😊
de_rats and cs_deathmatch is always nostalgic to me.
RIP cs_backalley. I love the overall ambiance of that map
