The tension and nervousness in imtiaz’s voice is adorable
and the respect!!!
Imtiaz Ali fan from tamilnadu ❤❤❤❤
Geethanjali is a wonder in the movie universe I'm not sure how many people from this generation watched it.
Geethanjali is one of the most underrated Indian(Telugu specifically) films ever, thank you so much for bringing it up again. 😊 Nagarjuna and Girija’s breakthrough performances, Will rewatch it this week!
I don’t think even Mani Ratnam knows he created Magic with Dil se !! A movie that has stayed with me since I first watched it when it released. Every scene still evokes emotions the music, bgm, SRK Manisha. A rare masterpiece
Same here
Agreed.. I feel the same way.. I dont think anyone associated with Dil Se actually understand what it is to so many of its fan.. I watched it first as a child in 1998 and its still my favourite movie...
Same with me.
Dil se is cult classic!
So true. When Dil Se released I was just discovering internet and remember going to the website and reading through it multiple times. So less is talked about Dil Se and Mani sir’s interpretation of seven shades of love - Hub, Uns, Ish, Aqueedat, Ibaadat, Junoon and ending with Maut. The journey still haunts!
What an Interaction... This is most I have seen ManiRatnam speak... He is comfortable with Imitiaz that I can feel. Thanks Imtiaz for this wonderful Interview. Its a little peak into his genius mind. I wish you covered more of his films.
Why isn’t anyone talking about Anjali!! That’s an outstanding movie. So emotional.
Yupp really...it's a masterpiece
Gitanjali also
cant agree more, master piece and the way the star war style song was shot. its a personal favourite
The best aspect of Imtiaz is his devout honesty! Mani Ratnam is a director of excellence, and I love him along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak!!!
The girl at 1:20:43 is so damn gorgeous, and what a beautiful question!
Arr and mani sir music is outstanding which i cant live without.
Master interviewing an another great master ❤
Brilliant Content & Awesome interview. Both Amazing Filmmakers Mani Ratnam & Imtiyaz Ali 🤘🏻👌🎥🎬🎞
Brilliant interview. Truly a masterclass when 2 greats of Indian cinema talk. Big Thanks!
Mounaragam,Nayakudu, Dhalapathi, Anjali, Geethanjali , Roja ,Bombay,Dilse, Sakhi and Amrutha are all my favourite movies
Mani sir and arr❤❤❤❤❤
So glad Imtiaz Ali brought up. Gitanjali. Such a masterpiece.
Two of my favourites....🖤
I am fan of both of these guys..They are passionate art geniuses
Hope Mani Ratnam collaborates with ‘writer’ Imtiaz Ali. I see a potential. The only person who can bring these two together is their common friend A.R.Rahman.
Dil se & Rockstar best music albums ever
Mani sir is great.
Fantastic Interview by 2 legendary and visionary directors!!! Loved it!
Quite a learning :)
What a treat of an interview for movie buffs
My most fav Indian movie : Tamasha. And IMHO indian best ever movie made is Iruvar. And both of the creator talking to each other 👏 great. Hope there will be another talk show with BR host it.
Fav is Dil se .. forever
A MANIRATNAM FILM 🔥
Two gems of indian cinema ❤❤
Mani sir ❤️❤️
Mouna Ragam is a master peice of Mani sir
“Uyire” is one of MR’s greatest piece of art! 💐🥰🛤️🧬
What a great interview.
Real Masterclass
Fabulous interview!
What an amazing masterclass. Such a fabulous mix of two amazing artistes. Imtiaz Ali asking amazing questions and Mani sir with his amazing responses. This is such a fab interview. We need more like this. Kudos to Film Companion for making this happen
Thanks for this !! ❤ Love listening to Mani sir !!!
Great interview Imitiaz Ali sir !! 👏
Side note - The Backdrop should have been centered and given them nicer comfy chairs and one table to keep Imitiaz Ali’s items 😅
What a brilliant interview, started midnight felt like a lullaby to my ears
Really good interview from Imtiaz
Geethanjali is also my fav movie. I am glad you brought it up. Everyone talks about mouna raagam, Nayakan, Roja and Bombay. But underrated films like Geethanjali deserve the credit.
True
Those who came here for what Mani ji talks about Maestro #Ilaiyaraaja: 42:00 - onwards until 45:22
Great main stream film maker .
Ilaiyaraaja sir and Mani sir combination was outstanding ❤❤❤❤ The songs and the BGMs are nectar to the ears.
அதெல்லாம் வடக்கனுங்களுக்கு தெரியாது, வெத்துக்கூச்சல் நரஹத்த மட்டுந்தான் தெரியும்.
I'm a Geetanjali fan for life! It's one of the most beautiful movies about love and death.
I've always wondered about those parallel storyline of the driver and some lady. I'm guessing for comic relief and a relief from the heaviness of the film. But it's so sleazy and feels like someone else shot it and inserted those clips in a Mani Ratnam film. I always fast forward those scenes.
Distributor back then wanted those scenes for mass appeal and Mani Ratnam had to do it.
Only because it's a Telugu film.... Telugu people need such masala in any film...
What Telugu people look for is masala and glamour and vulger....not story , quality of film
Katruvelidai is a masterpiece and is a highly enjoyable movie with superlativecsongs
❤
Mani has been very fortunate for being born in “Venus” family.
He got the best music of Illayaraja because of his uncle Krishnamurty sir, which Mr Raja tributed with bestest music. (U can revisit)
Third, he was lucky to find ARR and PC sriram who spoke loud through the camera and World class music.
PC especially with the angles and lighting was exceptionally marvellous. Which was totally new to Indian cinema.( PC sir went into depression after his personal loss and that’s how Manoj and Santhosh came on board) but PC already had left a motorway for them. It was easy ride.
Post Alaipaayuthe, his work was slowed down (due to health issues) . But I felt GuRu was a brilliant par casual.
His recent Ponniyin selvan in terms of screenplay is a disaster.
But he was lucky with the cinematograph, casting, music and production through out his career.
I am not taking low about his talent, but he was just lucky.
He is the best director and well respected person in cini field. So all the bests are willing to work with him. So it’s natural that all the best people gather around his films.
@@ConfusedHotChocolate84 All the best are working with the worst Maniratnam.
Luck plays a major role in everyone's success.
Whenever something cannot be explained we call it “luck” “god” “miracle”. Mani is good management guy from JBIMS Bombay. He is very good with planning and execution. There are many talents but most fail. The one who “manages” wins.
@@sapras5474 Who said mani is a winner?
34:48 ARR's wicked sense of humour..
Mani sir is the master of all Indain directors
❤❤
Ilayaraja-Maniratnam songs and background score are legendary, magically nostalgic and a musical masterclass.
Reading from what is being said here , it sounds like Mani needed breathing room and space to improve the song / sound which he got with arr , that too with quality. But with raja it was like here take all 5 songs by the afternoon. It works great for commercial Tamil movies but might have come across as it's more Raja's work than a combined team effort.
@@srizviewzIt's simply your perception. Raja sir is always open to suggestions. Many directors have vouched for it. Moreover his albums are not just commercial hits. Right from Pallavi anupallavi to Thalapathy, all the soundtracks from this combo are eternal and evergreen. Both songs and BGMs. Ilaiyaraaja sir had worked on Nayagan score and Agni Natchathiram score in parallel. Morning session Nayagan and afternoon session Agni. One is a period flick and the other one is a modern flick. He pulled off both convincingly. You must watch another interview where Mani Ratnam says "The two most talented artists in the entire industry are Ilaiyaraaja sir and Jayamohan sir". That says it all.
1:14:09 - Dil Se... Did anyone else feel that both of them were hesitating about the social commentary of Dil se because in current India, Mani Ratnam would definitely not be able to make it. I felt Imtiaz was hesitating a lot more than Mani Ratnam, which is sad that in India now, you can't even really talk about it let alone make Dil se...
2 movies i watch without getting bored any no of times is Mouna Ragam by Maniratnam and Jab We Met by Imtiaz Ali.
I love his respect for Ilayaraja
Kh234 waiting for it
Gitanjali & Amrutha are Great MOVIES of His works. GURU is purely master form. His Dalapathi is kind of Samurai movie.
Highfive moment
Anyone know which movie they are talking about at 29:33
Kannathil muthamittal i agree with that girl
Here only for A R Rahman ❤
Mani Ratnam plus Ilayaraja is the best combo ever. Even his worst film (according to him 29:14), Idhaya Koil was a huge success because of the wonderful songs by Ilayaraja. The real story behind the introduction of ARR includes people like K.Balachander and Vairamuthu's personal egoistic vendetta with Ilayaraja. And initially, it was Ilayaraja was the one recommended him to different movie producers, foreseeing Mani Ratnam's potential.
IR was becoming too egotistic, started having fallout with all the industry greats... good for us we got ARR, imagine the banner he was getting introduced under... KB and MR. Yeah, IR could make a movie hit just by his music at that time.
Yuva, Nayagan, Guru, OK Kanmani is my top 4
I cant believe an established and accomplished director like Imtiaz Ali has sooooo many questions about film making. #LiveAndLearn
இளையராஜா 🥰
Make another film and cast all the actors from the movie dil se ❤🦖💕🙏🏻🍺😘
The girl in 1:20:48 is too cute❤️
Looks like the malayalam actress Parvathi❤
SIMP
Gayest interview taking reference of kalakhseshtra 🎉
Big hugs to all my maniratnam fans here. ❤
NAYAGAN film awesome
Both choose Rahman. Legends know legends
He seems a very emotional guy but this guy ruined my life by making me believe in fairytales ❤😢
Wht is the movie Mani sir said at the starting he inspired
Roshomon (1950) by Akira Kurosawa,Japanese film
You need to change the thumbnail for the video to blow up.
please make another masterpiece with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan sir..
i will be next you sir
What was the name of Manirathnam's third film that he doesn't wasn't to be associated with?
Imtiaz Ali is a v serious director, the way he wanted explicit detailed information from Mani Ratnam about everything choosing the music director s characters in the films ,whatever
💯💬
am a bit saddened that there is not a mention of the contribution of the Production Designer in this conversation. In most western films, the Production Designer is one of the first creative force to step in and begin his collaboration with the Director only then followed by the cameraman.
Naan velai seiya virumbugirean
Some additional informations for the North Indians who are not fully aware of Mani's background
1. Unlike what he says in this session, he's not a complete outsider. His Father, Uncle and his elder brother were all in film business. PC, Kamal, etc were his friends even before he ventured into movies
2 The 4th movie that he disowns is Idhaya Kovil which was a super duper hit, widely known for its songs and comedy track. That was the first & last Mani's movie that had a seperate comedy track. I think those scenes might have been shot by the producer, nevertheless those scenes are still funny. He repeated the same leading actor of this movie into his 5th movie i.e. Mouna Raagam
3. There's more to why Mani chose ARR which he hasn't fully divulged. It's a long story, but it's due to a tiff between Ilayaraj and the producer of Roja, who was also the director of the movie Ek Duuje Ke Liye. Mani and Raja combination produced evergreen songs that are still unmatched & unrivaled. Mani & ARR songs might have garnered more listeners in the North and so might have made more revenue. But, artistically, Mani & Raja songs were totally at a different level with incredible background scores too.
4. Yes, Mani has a fascination for mythological stories. But, most of his films with mythological connection didn't end up doing well at the box office including Thalapathy...
Wow! Thalapathy didn't do well at the box office? who knew?
@@thangarajbalasubramanian5465 LOL, this guy is silly. He is saying that Roja is the reimagination of satyavan savithri, I think only Ravan didn't do well but that is becuase in the legend Ravan is a brahmin and an elite and not a tribal. I think the rest of the population could not identify the Ravan in Vikram.
But yeah, he must be the only guy hwo thinks thalapathy is not a hit.
@ebuti555 sadly you seem a disgruntled IR fanatic who cannot accept that somebody else, I say else, has created a niche for himself as a musical innovator and moved well ahead of his times, just like IR did for his era. It’s a significant loss to that music fan who is myopic and tunnelled, and trying to wedge a discriminatory chasm between two undoubtedly unique treasures of musical India…well done my friend..
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Lolz
I cant afford, we have budget😂😂 45:30
What's with the Sir, Sir, Sir? Why not Mani ji or Mr. Manirathinam?
The reason is he is from Chennai if he is from Telugu we call him Mani gaaru if he might be he is from North then we could call him mani ji.. 😎 but as always Mani sir 🔥
Wish Imtiaz asked less techincal questions and and more about his films
This was a "masterclass" & not an interview.
Which was the 4th movie which Mani Sir made and he didn't liked it.
I think it was idhaya kovil
Imtiyaz Ali will have to learn the craft of interviewing...this case a legendary filmmaker from the south, he keeps referring Mani Ratnam's films, most of the time through the interview he has not taken the name of the film...at least conspicuously so that the viewer knows which film is being talked about...
Sir He is not a professional interviewer, its a talk show between two great directors of Indian cinema. We enjoyed a lot with those flaws you mention .
This interview of Mani Ratnam is so impoverished, starts with Geethanjali and does till Dil Se that is 1998...Mani Ratnam managed to drag it back even to Moyna Ragam...Mani Ratnam has flourished a lot beyond that...why has his later films not been discussed? Was this a quickie interview or an interview just trying to fit into a gap like of sorts???
IMHO Ilayaraja (Mastero) was very instrumental for the success of Maniratnam and gave him the life and he leaving Raja has done great injustice to purist music lovers. While ARR could have brought a new sound but had his association continued with Raja sir music would have thrived. Lot of people are realising this gross historical mistake happened..
The interview could’ve been on a better set. You could arrange a coffee table at least. You were struggling with coffee mug , Mike your mobile and note book. Pity you.😅
😂
Mani ji . . Do yourself a favour . . Work with mr. Nana patekar . . Thats one combination we look forward to . .
Mani sir does not need do any favors for himself or for others. he is an institution and he usually picks actors that work for him, not for you
Nobody likes to work with Nana Patekar simply because he is obnoxious.
At least thats what most of his contemporaries have revealed in their interviews.
No thanks. Let him work with the Hugnihotaris. 🤢
Do yourself a favour? That might not be the phrase you were looking for. Try again
@@rohandev1444 Mani is an institution? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mani Rathnam knows Ilayaraja is a genius because if you remove his songs Mani rathnam's movies are nothing. ARR can give nice tunes but falls short in Background score.
Kuchh bhi
It's called collaboration, all mani Raja songs are outstanding same as mani arr the one common man here is mani
@1980sathi yeah right…so well observed and unbiased🙄
What a ridiculously uneducated observation.
Ilayaraja is a genius. No doubt. But, Rahman can't do background scores??
I wouldn't agree.
Mani Ratnam's last outing PS 1 & 2 has one of the best ever periodic film soundtracks that has ever happened in Indian film music.
Rahman too does write and create orchestral scores if you aren't aware of.
Some of his background scores are scattered around YT and digital streaming platforms for you to check. You might change your mind if you are open. 😊
Iam not a fan of mani ratnam
Glorified music video director. Only successful because of Ilaiyaraaja, AR Rahman, and copying Western classics.
Still an art that others don’t have it…had you watched Nayagan, you wouldn’t put this comment
Seriously? Drugs are harmful 😅😅😅
@@valoriefalorie4223 Yes, it is heavily inspired from The Godfather and multiple scenes are literally copied from it.
@@ramakrishnamitta7024nayakan is based on Varadarajan mudaliar a gangster from Chennai who moved into Bombay
Yet the most celebrated directors are his fans. Cinephiles with extensive cinema knowledge are his fans.
Geethanjali cinematography & music miles ahead, Till now.
