Why Don't Teslas Have Multiple Gears?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 січ 2018
- Teslas have been my favorite car for a very long time. When I heard I would get the opportunity to drive a Model S I knew I had to make a video about them. Learning to drive a manual transmission has made me think a lot about gears and the fact electric cars only need one has always been interesting. In this video, I talk about the differences in torque and RPM between electric and combustion engines.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you would like to suggest a video idea please leave it in the comments, and if you enjoyed please like and subscribe! It was my pleasure to add a bit of science to your day!

I just saw a Tesla today, so I found this video. You should talk about how it's crash detection system works.
Also you're so well spoken for 15, oh my goodness. You'd be like the perfect friend at my school 😂
You should talk about how they're trying to stop people from being able to repair them. Including independent car shops. And how they're building their batteries into their frames so when your battery dies, so does your car.
This guy. 😆
you should learn teslas always have made their batteries removable, most can go 350,000 miles before needing replacement. if you think tesla is proprietary welcome to capitalism 101 or did you think they should look out for other company's interests before theirs? i'm sure tesla doesn't want people taking their cars to someone who will likely scam them as mechanics are famous for doing.
This video makes me want to clean my room
If you keep these videos up you'll go places. Great content
Such a good video, good job man
Another well done video. Keep at it you’ll make it big I have no doubt
Nice video.
Your old enough to learn how to drive (that's what I guessed from the description and your driving skills).
I could only get my license when I was 18.
I could tell that you enjoyed creating this video.
Could one of the Tesla models pull a trailer with the engine inside as well as a truck
Nicely done video, as always. Very good explanation while not going super technical. While in the standard car, where you not wearing shoes? Also, did you get your full license? If so, congrats man! :D How did you get the opportunity to drive a Tesla?
The car wasn't moving in that shot so I don't believe I had shoes on. I don't have my full license yet so I still need an adult in the cat. And the Tesla was a freind of a freinds car. Finally thank you so much!
I'm sure you'll get your licences soon. You seem like a good driver. :-) Also, I wasn't complaining about you not having shoes, I was just curious. :P And you're quite welcome!
Yeah I just have to wait a few months until I'm 16 to get my full license
Well done video. Simple and straight to the point
Man am I envious! What's the driving age in Florida? Here, you can't get a full licence until you are 18...
Well at 15 (me) you can drive with an adult and at 16 you can get your full license
Huh, I guess NJ is just stricter then usual. I think here it's 16 for driving with an adult, 17 for just family, and 18 for full.
I believe that the early prototypes of the original Tesla Roadster had 2 different gears but i am not 100% sure
Yeah they either had two or three but found it really wasn't necessary
3:35 me irl
So will a car still function with multiple gears ?
Add another weight.
actually in cars with combustion engines the motor can overrev if you go past the redline which can cause valve float. that means the valves might stay open when they aren't supposed to be. If the engine is something called an interference engine, the valves can hit the piston and cause damage to both the valves and the piston itself. This can also cause so much damage that the engine block fragments.
The real reason why cars with combustion engines have different gears is due to combustion engines having a torque/power curve. when the engine is at lower rpms, it doesn't output as much power or torque as it would at higher rpms. Combustion engine transmissions commonly use 5 or more gears to have good acceleration, but also have the ability to keep low rpms on the freeway to save fuel. Electric motors don't vary much in torque or power at different rpms, so they can use a single gear and not need to worry about stalling out or using more fuel.
On a side note: Did you try the Ludicrous mode?
Harkin Labs Gaming okay but to be fair to the kid that can all be summarized as combustion engines have a low range of speeds that they can operate in
Jacob_Orth1 yes, I was trying to elaborate on what he said so people can better understand what he was talking about.
also, nice boxter!
It's actually a Carrera but thanks
ScienceC yeah, its nice. The camera angle made it look more cramped than a 911. Anyways good luck with the maintenance. There is a known problem with either the timing or a bearing on older 911s I believe. You shouldn't need to worry about that because it gives lots of warning signs before then like rattling and scraping noises.
All I want is a Tesla with a second gear. Same first gear and like a 1:1 second
Smart kid
Electric motors use more power when they spin faster. I am not sure why electric vehicles don't have a cvt or some transmission to allow the motors to spin slower, yet to propel the car at a fast speed.
Theodore Cretu I believe the Prius does use a cvt transmission in conjunction with the electric motor they have. The issue I see is that with one of those, you loose torque, and they suck at holding power. Tesla’s are extremely powerful and would probably destroy one very quickly. I believe it also makes the drivetrain more complex, especially for awd. This is probably why they just use a dual motor for awd. No transfer cases, to drive shafts that go to differentials or etc. A simple motor with the single gear trans.
Wouldn't electric cars have a higher range if they had gears, as they could go faster with the same power consumption?
Well the electric motors are efficient at most speeds so it’s not really worth the extra weight and complexity
You talk about number of teeth as the deciding factor of gear ratios but I think as a general overview it'd be better to use gear diameter. Still a great video though keep up the good work 👍
Originally I was going to use diameter, but all the equations use teeth and that's the only thing that really matters
Its teeth lol if the gear is larger it needs more teeth
Angry Rimac noises
Second!
You got to drive a Tesla, awesome.
Dats me
Yup
Are you old enough to drive?
Does this kid actually have a license?
You should know! It's dangerous to talk to a camera while driving.
Especially if you gesture with both hands! Be careful, drive safe. Love the videos! Maybe your next video can be on how distractions impact driving safety, like Tom Scott's video m.ua-cam.com/video/_-aDHxoblr4/v-deo.html
That whole part was filmed in an empty parking lot so there wasn't much to worry about
But couldn’t you increase the cars battery life at higher speeds with gears?
Power is force X speed not torque X speed
