  • At the battle of the Kalka River, generals Jebe and Subutai of the Mongol Empire used a tactic called the "feigned retreat" to win a great victory against a larger Rus army! In this video we'll fight two battles in Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord and try to recreate this genius tactic to win!

@@dinguskhan46329 This becomes significantly less true in the second and third generations of Mongol conquest. Once the Mongols had conquered much of the Middle East, much of China, were pressing in to Volhynia (Poland, essentially) their style of warfare had adapted quite a bit to be more "imperial", utilizing mixed composition armies more and more effectively. Kublai fighting like Genghis would have never conquered the Song or Korea, and would have had no chance against the few Japanese engagements between Mongols and Japanese. The Ilkhanate would never have been able to hold Persia, with its three mountain ranges.

Actually against the AI it's pretty easy. You divide your horse archers into 3 groups instead of 2 and keep using horse archers just as regular archers with increased mobility. Get two groups cresting the top of the hills on either side , keep the third one on the road further back. Then, as the enemy approaches, use your increased mobility to sneak one of the hill groups past the enemy force and get behind them, and put the one group that was on the road on the side you moved a group from. From this triangle of death position you keep pulling back and re-engaging your horse archers as your enemies try to engage them. It's actually a bigger bloodbath than on a plain because you can take high ground from all around your enemy, which means he'll always be trying to charge you uphill.

The Mongols made use of 3 primary "types" of cavalry, the first acting just as outriders and skirmishers, the second acting as heavier skirmishers capable of dealing with infantry, and the third utilizing shock charges. It is REALLY hard to do in Bannerlord without RTS camera, but you can kind of do the same on a lot of maps, hiding a group of heavy lancers behind a hill or something, using the first group to lure and attack with the second just as done here, and then lure the enemy infantry for the big ol lancer charge. This specifically, with three different groups, is how the Mongols under Subutai and Batu dealt the first blows against the Kievan Rus, and was later used against the Poles and Hungarians effectively as well. Charges into already-peppered cavalry and into exhausted infantry.
God I love bannerlord. I want to get back to playing so badly, no idea when I will actually be able to.

While on plains or any type of plain plateau, mounted archers were far more destructive and had better usage potential than any spear/lanced based cavalry. However, alike bannerlord, mounted archers would be borderline useless when it comes to obstructive terrain such as forests or any rocky terrain. Not to say that "mele" calvalry would do much better in a forest but the inbalance caused by obstructive terrain would affect someone trying to aim a bow a lot harder than someone couching a lance. It would be amazing to see you trying to get a use of any type of cavalry in some rocky terrain. If anyone can do it, its probably strat gaming

By late game I had only my small army of 350 khan's guard and 150 of a collection of lancers and cataphracts, then a lot of low tier armies just to match numbers so I could have all 500 of my troops on the field, and I went undefeated for the entire campaign, taking on kill numbers for my 500 of upward to 3000.

Eventually the AI just stops chasing and sits there while you have them surrounded on all sides by horse archers. When their numbers run low and you see them breaking apart trying to engage everything at once, you unleash your melee cav and give the charge command to the Horse Archers and watch the bloodbath.

melee cav just all die every battle if you use F1 F3, which makes mounted tactics important if you want to win more then 1 battle with your expensive cav, horse archers are better, but they still run in 1 at a time unless you micro them like foot archers, F1 F3 is pretty decent when you have infantry against archers since you don't want your units to stand around eating arrows for too long

Lol, i didn't know i was using a named strategy the whole time.😅 I play very cavalry focused with like 150 horse archers, 150 normal cav, 100 infantry and 50 archers. Always bait the enemy cav near my frontline and just delete it. The rest is easy. Without riders the enemy is helpless. The enemy archers have no chance against your horse archers and when they try shooting you, their infantry lets them unprotected. Than you only have to shoot the infantry from front and behind. They do not often reach my infantry. Lost 80 men in a battle 1200 vs 1200, but i didn't get any new troops on the field, because i lost not enough.😅
