After all these years, my wife and I finally saw James in concert...in Charlotte, NC...in July of 2022. You can imagine how the crowd reacted to this song in his home state. He's in his 70s now but still has that crisp, clear soothing voice. He is now joined on stage with his son Henry for many of the harmonies. This early career song still is beautiful

Just love James Taylor. He has such a beautiful heart. So many great songs. "Sweet Baby James", Shower the People and Mexico are some of my other favorites. Loved watching you love this! BTW, I had job interviews in both South Carolina and North Carolina within the same week and as I was driving to the Greenville SC airport, this song came on and helped me to realize that I wanted the job in Raleigh, NC. That was 24 years ago! I still cry when I hear this.

Just seen James in May. My 8th time hearing him and have met him once in 2007. Very generous person.
I told him about my son who's middle name is James (named after him) he said "Give him my regards, won't you?)
The next year my grandson was born and given the middle name of James, also as a nod to JT.
Eli James Wincel... watch for him. He's 15 and an excellent guitarist already.
Oh, have also signed my copy of his first album from 1967 titled James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine. It have it framed and hanging in my room

James was in London recording his first album. He was the first artist signed to the Beatles Apple label by Peter Asher. He wrote parts of this while staying at Peter's flat and it reflects his homesickness at the time, as he was missing his family, his dog and his state.
The song's lyric "holy host of others standing around me" makes reference to the Beatles. Paul McCartney is playing bass and he, George Harrison and Peter Asher along with James sing backup.
Edit: I suggest that you check out Jackson Browne's song "The Pretender". Pure poetry set to music.

If you dig around on YT, you can probably dig up a duet with James Taylor and Carole King... they performed together frequently and anything you can find with them together will be a hit.... I know there's a vid of her doing "You've Got a Friend" with him on guitar, but she's clearly the front voice on that one, but I'm sure there are some with them doing some of their songs together in true duet. There's a DVD of Carole King and James Taylor, I think it's called "A Night at the Troubadour" where they shared the stage.... this is an experience you want!

Yes, it starts off with him thinking of Carolina, a happy place where James grew up, but then he's on the "dark side of the moon" and going through tough times, so he is going to Carolina in his mind to escape the problems and loneliness he's going through now. It's a song about escaping your worries by returning to a safe place in you mind.

If you like great lyricists, you should give Joni Mitchell a try if you haven’t already. Her rabbit hole is deep. Her early work is pure folk, but as time went by she transitioned into jazz. My favorite, Amelia (from the album “Hejira”), lies somewhere in between. It’s probably best to start at the beginning though with Urge for Going, The Circle Game, or perhaps Both Sides Now.

Many rumors that James is not a nice guy (ask Carly) but he could write and play with the best of them. Hey Sam, John Denver did a cover of this song

The only rumors about that are from Carly, it might be Carly because she can't seem to have a relationship with anybody... Just saying.

Funny, I never heard any of those rumors. But he was an addict for many years (which he defeated) so it would not be a surprise that he rubbed some people the wrong way during those years.

Or maybe, he's on his death bed. 🎶And hey Babe, the sky's on fire I'm dyin', ain't I Going to Carolina in my mind 🎶 because he can't in body. Sorry if this comes across as a downer to you younglings in the prime of your strength; but on my end of the life cycle and given what I've lived through and those I've lost, this strikes a chord. A somewhat melancholy, yet a beautiful one. Dylan Thomas got it wrong. Going gentle into that good night with grace and serenity is no bad thing.

He's dying. He was hit on the head from behind, by a supposed friend of his. He's lying on the ground with a group of people standing around him. He knows he's going to be dead in few minutes and will never get back to Carolina, the countryside he loves, and that's all he can think about as the life drains away from him. This is one of the saddest songs ever. Listen to the lyrics again.
