    Reportedly, Carol King wrote "you've got a friend" for James in response to "I've seen fire & rain". There is a beautiful video of Carol & James performing "You've got a Friend"...well worth the view!

    The song has three verses. One is about a friend who committed suicide, another is about Taylor's addiction to heroin, the third refers to a mental hospital and a band Taylor started called The Flying Machine.

    • @truckrboat
      @truckrboat 13 днів тому +16

      The mental hospital verse was James checked into a facility for his addiction and spent 5 months there, thus “sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground” because the band fell apart during his recovery I believe

    I can't stop the tears. It so reminds me of the love of my life. We just couldn't seem to keep it together, but we loved each other deeply. Then I heard that he had passed from cancer. I still have guilt that I wasn't there to make him seek medical attention, but grateful that the last words we said to each other was "I love you". Maybe we'll have a chance for forever in heaven.

    A lot of people, when asked about the music of the 1970's, will mention some of the rock and disco music of that era. But 70's music, especially the early 70's, were also filled with some of the best story tellers in music history. Artists like James Taylor, Carly Simon, Carol King, Rod Stewart and Harry Chapin dominated the airwaves from 1970 to 1975.

    He was so big, he made the cover of Time Magazine. I saw him in 1981 in an outdoor concert with people sitting on blankets on a hillside. About a half hour into his set it started lightly raining. He played the next 1.5 hours in the rain. Almost the entire audience stayed util the end. So yes, he's seen rain.

    James Taylor - Fire & Rain !!!!! GREAT !!! AND you are getting the story here. James was overseas recording his 1st album when she committed suicide and nobody told him because they didn't want to side track his album. It was also about his addition and he spent time in a facility. Carol King heard the line "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend" and wrote You've Got A Friend. You may find this interesting. Fire and rain was actually essentially 3 different songs in one. It had 3 separate main verses and each one with a different meaning. The first verse concerned a friend who committed suicide. The second verse refers to his heroin addiction. That is well documented. The third was a reference to a mental hospital and a band he used to be longed to which was called the Flying Machine. Anyway, make what you want of it. I'm just passing on the information that he himself has put out there regarding this song.

    I just love James Taylor! I'm 64 and grew up listening to his music. Carole King wrote the song "You've Got a Friend" for him in response to this song. Both of them released versions of the song in 1971. Someone else commented that they were married, however they were just friends and never even dated. "You've Got a Friend" has been covered by a lot of artists. Some other songs by James Taylor are "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight", "Sweet Baby James", "Carolina In My Mind", "Handy Man", "How Sweet It Is", "Shower the People", and "Something in the Way She Moves".

    I’ve always loved James Taylor. He was one of the first artists signed to the Beatles new Apple label! Gorgeous songs and beautiful man. “Carolina on my Mind”, Sweet Baby James, Mexico, Shower the People, just to name a few. If you’d like to see him smiling and flirty, watch the live version of Mockingbird with his then wife Carly Simon. Just makes you smile 😊

    Huge hit. It inspired his friend Carole King to write "You've Got A Friend", which James Taylor also had a big hit with.

    Flying Machines was the name of the band that James was in and had broken-up sometime prior to writing the song, hence 'sweet dreams, and Flying Machines in pieces on the ground'.

    Another great, emotional song by one of America's all-time singer/songwriters of the early to mid seventies!
    I've seen on TV that he's going to playing at The Hollywood Bowl soon.....I'd love to take my wife....but it's probably not going to happen. 😞

    I'm dumbfounded. How in the world could you get to the age that you both are without hearing this song? Or James Taylor? His first album was on the Beatles' Apple label and it went nowhere. The second, "Sweet Baby James" is his second album and "Fire and Rain" was on that record. He and Jackson Browne both released records in 1970, and they, along with several others, ushered in the Singer-Songwriter era which lasted well into the 80s. It's so much fun to see the two of you hearing these songs for the first time.

    When I went to high school this song was extremely popular and James Taylor was the most popular singer-songwriter of the time. All the girls were crushing on Taylor and crushing hard. A few songs I’ll suggest are “Carolina on my Mind” and “Mockingbird” which he sings with Carly Simon who was his wife at the time. There were the king and queen of folk rock.
    Unfortunately their marriage didn’t last James was heavy into hard drugs he was well on his way to becoming a member of the 27 Club, but luckily he kicked the habit and has been clean and sober since 1983, and we have got to enjoy him for the last 40+ years.
    Two songs I’d like like to see a reaction to are “At Seventeen” by Janis Ian I want tp see how Sam relates to this song, it has a very powerful message. Another song I’d like to see a reaction to is “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” by Patty Loveless. For her, it is a very heartfelt song with tires to her family. Patty is as country cornbread and collard greens and she has a voice that will knock you out of your seat.
