That’s a straight-T. The Double Wing has the half-backs lined up off the outside hip of the TE or Tackle if there’s a split-out (see Air Force’s ‘slot-backs’). It’s cool to see the old Belly-G scheme.

Bettis was the fullback and Culver and Brooks split time at tail. People didn't hardly realized the depth of this RB crew. Bettis and his back mate Reggie Brooks, replaced legends of Anthony Johnson and Ricky Watters. Also standing behind and alongside them was Ray Zellers, Dorsey Levens, Rodney Culver, Marc Edwards, Lee Becton, Autrey Denson, Randy Kinder, Jeff Burris(CB/RB) and Ryan Grant. All was NFL starters. Only college you can compare as more talented is Miami, but the difference is Bettis,Grant, Levens and Watters all have SB rings.

I CANT believe how stupid the coaches are to DO this in the past; give Fullbacks the ball with a useless Tailback out of the play behind the FB! The dominant formation was what Madden used to call 'Proform' split backs; not I formation; when the FB got the ball the HB blocked. Not with 90's Notre Dame though!! You have Bettis and you don't even give him his OWN FB or at least put the HB in position to block someone? I formation running its ALREADY a disadvantage; 9 blockers because QB and ball carrier don't block; now lets make it 8 on 11? Bettis is a beast just for breaking runs in THAT stupid set up.

Not a huge Norte Dame fan but love old school football. A couple things, Irish had bad luck while Bettis was there. Always felt like his Freshman year they should of won the title vs Colorado. Rocket ran that punt back.. Bettis’s last year they lost to Stanford which snowballed them. A big reason they lost that game was Bill Walsh was the NBC analyst for a few years before taking the job in Palo Alto. Still, it’s damn impressive that Bettis avg. 5.7 a clip and I’d say 85% of his work was between the tackles. His last year he did play some TailBack to close games out.

I think that he would've been great with at halfback, with fullback in front of him too, since he'd be have more room to build up speed.
And he'd have been much better as a fullback in Oklahoma's wishbone as well. Defenses would've been so distracted trying to account for everyone else in the 'bone that Bettis would've had huge lanes to run through.

Its RIDICULOUS that Bettis is lined up as a Fullback with a HB Behind him that's out of the play; one less blocker. It took the Steelers to use him the right way. He left the Rams after they wanted him to be a FB like college. Now seeing this video I understand where the stupid idea came from; having Bettis and ANOTHER ball carrier in the backfield, Notre Dame made it work, why can't LA Rams? Well obviously it didn't work. We all know without having to check reference; because I have no memories of the early 90's Rams except that 49ers called them 'same old sorry ass Rams' when they moved to St Louis; got Mike Martz as offensive coordinator and after 3 years of Vermeil and Martz proceeded to turn Kurt Warner into a Hall of Fame candidate while blowing out the Niners into a 2nd place team fighting for Wildcard births.

In Notre Dame's defense, they often used their fullback like a Wishbone FB, where he would be the first part of an option play (like Earl Campbell or Georgia Southern's Adrian Peterson). Because it was an option a lot of the time, one of the unblocked defenders would be optioned off, negating the lack of blocking.
However, the same could not be said for the T-formation that Notre Dame would often run Bettis out of on short yardage situations. But it looked really unique, so I don't have a problem with that.

@@PockyCandy Ray Burris was also a "go to" guy in short yardage T-Formation, I don't ever recall him coming up short.

Some synergy story here ...I was a QB in junior football (you can look it up) London Ontario league ...I think I was 12 ...we had a running back named Bets ...he was an Italian kid ...he was our best player ...leagues best player ...his body size, was like double, other kids in league ...he could run ...oh yah ...Bets went onto play for Catholic Central in London ...prominent high school 🏫 🏈
