Pat's Nostalgia: "Elvira - Mistress of the Dark" - Amiga/DOS Review

- In this episode of "Pat's Nostalgia" I review "Elvira - Mistress of the Dark", the first of two Elvira games Horrorsoft created before renaming to Adventuresoft and creating the "Simon the Sorcerer" games.
Elvira 1 is a RPG/Adventure hybrid, using some roleplaying features and combing them with a traditional point-and-click graphic adventure.
The DOS and Amiga versions are graphically identical but the Amiga version has better music, so I look primarily at that version.

Another fantastic review! I remember seeing a review for this in Amiga Format and marvelling at how gory the deaths were. :)
Saw your link on Lemon Amiga - I had this game back in the day and I'm just replaying on RetroPie via emulation now, wonderful stuff! Great to be able to revisit these classics. I worked in game dev for many years and the 8/16-bit era computers hold a special place in my heart! Thanks for sharing.
Subscribed! I love nostalgia reviews. Awesome intro as well, if you keep them coming I will keep watching!
Very good review of a favorite of mine. I remember finding it quite scary playing it as a young kid.
I should add that I seem to recall that in the dungeons you can get locked inside one of the cells and be forced to die.
I had no idea this was made by the creators of Simon the Sorcerer, but I was reminded of the animation style when Elvira was mixing her potions. The combat looks like it would be frustrating and just get in the way of the adventuring. That's what I experienced in Quest For Glory, which also mixed the two genres.
Excellent review as always :D
This was one hell of a creepy game when I played it on the Amiga back when it was released! The music, especially, has haunted me ever since! Epic game!
I've looked up the C64 version and was not only impressed by a good (if a tad too slow) port, but also by a fantastic SID tune. Can't get it out of my head for 3 weeks. Thanks, Pat! ;)
Great review. It would have been nice if you come back and make some more :), there is always a demand for high quality retro reviews like yours. please stop making people wondering if you're ok :)
This game has the most evil soundtrack I've ever heard. I've never even played it myself, but goddamn there's so much dread, fear and judgement in the music
Hey everyone! Sadly, there won't be any more Pat's Nostalgia episodes. But if you want to hear more from me, I invite you to the podcast I am participating: Passion of the Geeks

Awesome! I randomly just checked this channel in case I missed a video in the last ten years. Glad you're still making stuff. Maybe you could do a video on this channel letting people know about your new stuff?

could it be this game is made by the same people who made Waxworks? Those games look and play very similiarly
OneDoomedAngelo you are correct! Horrorsoft made Elvira 1/2, Waxworks and Personal Nightmare.
Cool, even in long term i cant wait for then and the ones that will come in beetwin. You do an amazing job, thanks and congratlations.
i had this game on the amiga and i loved it and still do. but since i dont have my amiga anymore.
how can i play this game on my modern pc? can i buy it somewhere?
will you be doing any more reviews?
I Think the coolest Death is one I never saw myself when playing. But its the rock beast from the dungeons having clubbed the player to Death with a hammer I Think...standing over your bloody head or something. I was kind of shocked to see a very different and new Death ^^
These reviews you do comparing the Amiga and Dos versions are great. Hope you can post some more. The only reason I prefer this game in Dos is it runs much faster. The Amiga has better music than the Adblib/Soundblaster version but the rarer Roland Mt-32 music in the Dos version is even better.
haha i first played this game on an ancient dos pc, it was so slow it took several seconds for the enemies to perform a sword swing!
My biggest gripe is how arbitrarily rude Elvira is in this game, her dialog is hostile towards the player through the entire game, that is something they toned down in the second one. She is kind of tacked on but I think it worked well having her as an NPC within the game to guide, help, and joke with the player. Her character would be totally wasted if you played as her in this game, no quips or cleavage from the mute first person protagonist.
Ooohhh.. Creepy! I never knew the music in the Amiga version was so cool! Now I feel like I'm missing out...
I'm having some trouble opening the game on ScummVM.
Any help?
Son of a bitch, those death screens look grim.
Hello Pat! I forced myself not to watch anyone else's review of this game until I finished and uploaded mine. Now that that's done, I'm able to check yours out. If you want to see how yours compares, mine is pinned on my channel's page.
With that said, I want to talk about the game and your review. I am happy you went with the Amiga version, because I had played the DOS game all the way through. I did briefly try the Amiga's. Combat seemed to go much easier and the music blew away what DOS was pumping out. It looks like the game's are almost identical. I noticed some differences in the text. Like when Elvira crawls out of the dumbwaiter to give us the key, she basically chewed me out on the DOS game while the Amiga version she was nice to the player. Were there any different voice samples at the end of the game?
The audio dept. This game really suffered from crappy sound effects. At least for DOS. I barely counted any sounds, enemy block, enemy hit, female scream, clank, and weird underwater noises. The music was good for both versions. I do prefer Amiga's any day of the week. Elvira 2's music didn't have the same vibe for me.
Magic system I didn't use much of. I made some attack spells and left it at that after herbal honey and the glowing pride spell. I used them on the gremlins. I really struggled to find some of the ingredients in the garden area. We really had to look at every angle and pixel hunt!
The best part of the game was the atmosphere. What a creepy game. If it wasn't for that, and Elvira, then I wouldn't have continued to the end. Trying to find all the keys and get to Emelda was fun. The last fight was too easy, but I'm glad. It would have been sad if she was too difficult to figure out.
Anyway, great review. You touched on a lot of things that I had written in my first draft that I scrapped because I couldn't portray things like game mechanics in an entertaining manner. I thought it'd be good to teach people how to play, until I realized no one would bother trying this clunky outdated game. Which is too bad, so I hoped to give people a chance to see the game for what it was back in 1990. Thanks for the video, Pat! I'm subscribing :)
omg "who basically looks good and stays in the kitchen" LOLOLOLOLL

Really good video!
hey fellow fans what do you think if they made a new Elvira point and click adventure game
+Danny Gantz It would be cool they should have the option to make love to her breasts.
+James Creelman that be awesome lol imagine if they made it a live action point and click
If i see this game bck then when it was new i would run away of it since elvira in a pc game sound cheezy and just a game to make a buck...... how ever its a real master piece, as all horrorsoft games have this unique atmosphere.
tnx for this amazing review, i hope you reach this game sequel and waxworks.
I myself recommend the Atari ST wersion, for the music there is the best
Elvira is one sexy lady ;D, very good review i relay enjoyed it.
A woman in the kitchen, that is a plus.
waxworks rip off tbh
I wouldn't call it a "rip off", The similarities between the games is due to being developed by the same company, Horror Soft(Later known as Adventure Soft) and that both games use their AGOS game engine.
Also, I think you may be confusing the order in which you encountered the games with the order the games was developed, as Elvira - MotD is actually a couple of years older than Waxworks.
@@Ts6451 You are right. Waxworks was going to be a sequel or spiritual successor.
