  • Saturday morning turned into an emergency trip to the vet with Kinsey... the jury is still out if there was actually something wrong physically??
The vet couldn't really figure it out... although Mark was convinced she was faking it.
Meanwhile, I'm still on chore duty while Carissa is on holidays... but let's face it... I spend most of the time out in the pasture with the golden girls.

@@thetruepatriot7733 I really appreciate the fact that Sandi takes care to not criticize other farmers. I didn’t spend ages, but I poked around and read some articles on sheep farming and what is deemed cruel. The only practice that Sandi does on those lists is tail docking. There were things like kicking the sheep, pulling on their ears, mutilating the skin around the anus, etc etc. It also appears that the sheep barn that she has is the industry standard. I can’t imagine Sandi intentionally hurting a sheep. Her barn is nothing like the overcrowded chicken barns. Nobody has a you tube channel about mass producing chickens- because its horrible! Sandis barn is open and airy, and provides shelter for the weather extremes that that area has. Her sheep seem quite happy, and only rarely show signs of stress. When they do, she takes care of it right away. I’d prefer if she didn’t use Monsanto corn and defoliant, but that’s an issue that we all have to work together on, because it can’t be tackled without levelling the playing field first. We all have to balance out our decisions when it comes to animal welfare, environmental damage, carbon footprint, etc. etc. Farmers have a really hard time staying profitable, so she makes practical decisions. I genuinely don’t see these sheep as being abused, her practices seem quite reasonable, and higher that the industry standard. It’s great that you have found a way to practice your values. Don’t criticize others for taking a different route, if you don’t like her practices, don’t watch. If you think that the law needs to be changed, then change it. We have decided, as a society, that this level of far,in practice

Re Kinsey and a possible scenario, I'm going for a combination of stressors; Super loud shocking bang as milk hut fell over, plus eating something rotten to make her sick, plus being left alone overnight, plus the bag dog peeing in the house scolding = feeling very sick, confused and depressed. Yep - she's also very sensitive.

From my experience with dogs in general, if they are attached to you they can read you or sence if you are upset, mad, or any emotion really. If they are led to believe that you are aiming those feelings toward them, they will do things to attempt to remedy those feelings. Like with Kensie she thinks you are mad at her so she remedied it by " being sick." Now you are doing things with her making her a priority and you are not mad at her anymore.

Dogs can be master manipulators. And if she’s picked up that she’s being treated differently then it’s possible. It’s a shame she can’t hold her pee. My dog can hold for 15hrs over night. I’m one lucky girl with that one! But it could be that the pain killer just made her feel better, who knows. My dog recovers from his infrequent leg injuries quite quickly with sufficient rest. Anyway, I’m glad she seems better xxx

After hearing the whole story about your little big pup, I am honestly beginning to think that my son must be a border collie.
At the age of 1, my son tripped, hurt his foot and got mounds of attention and people coddling him and carrying him everywhere. A week goes by and he was refusing to put weight on his one foot and scream cried (actual tears) each time I did not pick him up. Well, a quick trip to the ER and some x-rays later and the doctor said "There has to be something in his soft tissue because kids this age do not fake this kind of pain." That night I woke up to find my son climbing from his bed and walking across the floor toward my bed. As soon as I sat up, he froze and then fell onto the carpet holding his left foot. I told him "Wrong foot" and he starts crying holding his right foot.
Don't sweat it, because apparently human doctors can get it wrong, too.

You were lucky to be able to afford that, and so too them. Having grown up on a beef farm, I understand Sandi's reality. We had 'pet' cows, several favourites, but second year barren, they had to be shipped no matter how much we loved them. If we had a local market for mature beef, our neighbourhood butcher could drop them in the field but most would have to be put on a 9hour truck ride to Toronto. There was just not room in the barn or enough hay to feed animals that couldn't pay their way.

I would love to have a "Golden Sheep" shirt, a real picture on a shirt of our retiree's. It would sell very well would be my guess, the girls have a special place in our hearts too! I mean how could anyone not love those special mommas? Besides being ask questions about the shirt when I would be wearing it, it would be a chance for us watchers to know each other out in public! Even if we didn't have our shirt on, if we saw someone else wearing one we would at least be able to say "Hi!", and I watch Sandy too!
I'm glad Kinsey is feeling better, it may have been that she hurt her back, my little guy here hurt his and it took us over a month to get him back in shape! I've had Collies, and one Boarder Collie, they are super smart, but most likely it was a combination of getting put out and maybe she chased something (critter) and maybe twisted her back slightly, which hurt her and the pain meds helped at the right time to make her feel better, between that and the rest she took herself.
Either way I'm so glad that she feels better now!!!

We had some golden girls. We found that they liked being locked into the barn at night with the door closed (kept the wolves away and I think they felt felt safe knowing they wouldn't get cornered in there) but they preferred pasture during the day. If we left them out past dusk they would become rather disoriented and directionally challenged. It was a good life for a few special ladies.

Kinsey is very work driven. She's determined to help you do everything from moving sheep, to wanting to help you start the feed cart or pull the straw wagon. She even gets excited if you are pushing a broom or shovel and runs up looking for a way to assist! Dogs bred to work are so strongly programmed by genetics, that they almost don't have an off switch. This is why some herding breeds especially, can make very challenging pets. Border collies and Australian sheep dogs, can drive owners crazy if kept as house pets with no regular work challenges. They crave work and routine. If Kinsey was used to being in the house with you, and suddenly she was not permitted then she could feel rejected and a failure. I could easily see her interpret an upset stomach as further evidence, in her mind, that she has fallen short and something was really wrong with her. Feelings of rejection and depression are especially possible in more intelligent breeds.

Thanks for the explanation of the fat issue in the ewe lambs. Your thoughts about saving the butchers having to trim off the fat is interesting. I wonder how many ofter sheep farmers think of that stuff? It costs you $$ to feed those extra waste-pounds of fat, so I guess money can be saved on both sides of the issue. It's interesting to hear about these kinds of things as part of your business. Good luck with the Golden Girls learning to eat grass!

I foster dogs (15years) and my latest foster had the exact same symptoms as Kinsey. Turns out he has IVDD (spinal disc disease), and this may not be the case for Kinsey but she may have definitely twinged her back. It is very normal for dogs to display behavioural changes and avoid their humans when they are in pain. And given she is so smart she was probably milking the attention too when she started feeling better 😉

When dogs are ill but there's no solid reason, vets call that "ADR" for "Ain't Doing Right".
We had a dog who had urinary issues as a pup. The vet put him on "overactive bladder" medication for about 6 mos while we continued with the housetraining. He eventually was able to hold it longer and his body learned how to tell him when he needed to go.
Our first dog here was a border collie mix. Smart, very smart, dog. He hated to be away from me and when he was put in the dog lot with the other dogs (we fostered and rescued), he would whine. I stepped out to go to the mailbox and he ran to the gate. He fell in a hole and came up limping. I watched him for a bit and on my way back, decided to let him into the house so I could check him. He stood at the gate with one foot up. As soon as that gate was open, he ran--all 4 feet on the ground--to the front door. I stood at the bottom of the steps looking at him and he slowly raised one foot. I still am not sure it was the same foot!
As for her stiffness, this could be a sign of arthritis that was caught by accident. It was a foggy morning and that can cause stiffness, no matter the temperature. You noted it on one of the Golden Girls. The pain medication probably helped a lot. If she is stoic to pain, yeah, she's going to run around until one day she no longer can. If she is slow/stiff on the next foggy morning or three, consider taking her to the vet again to query this.
Was the behavior faked? Not really. Fake is the wrong word. She was unsure of herself and her place. She behaved in a way that wouldn't anger you. Quiet. Small. Slow moving. Which presented as she wasn't well.

  • @helenhodge-croom9635

I had a boarder/aussi mix and smart as ever...he actually hurt himself as a pup and sometimes it would bug him out of the blue. Vet would give him pain meds and a day or 2 later he would be himself. Not sure if kensey actually hurt herself or was taking advantage but she didn't seem her Energizer bunny self running around back n forth with the sheep like usual...could she have been pouting... absolutely! My German shepherd service dog has had a bunch of those kind of days lately. I was caring for my mom and taking any of the service dogs to chemo was not the best idea(it raises your blood sugars and being that was their task.....)so they have been left at home the past year. They make mad dashes to the door or cars if they think your going anywhere or pout under the table.😄
Merch idea...a tee with the golden girls on it! Or a small collection of stuffed sheep that go together (like the 4 in a box or bag as a set) maybe some comic pics of them sitting at a pool side that says sheepishly me retirement home(kinda like the shady acres thing from the actual show but in a good way).

We had a collieXlab growing up. I can't even explain how easily she picked up on emotions in the house. But nothing compared to if she thought she was in trouble. Regarding Kinsey's vet scare, my hubbs and I have 2 cats, but our first one panicked when we brought the second one home. Full blown vomiting, whining and fasting. We took him to the emergency vet at 2am after he woke us from vomiting and they gave him fluids and some pain meds. Once we got back home, he calmed and we cuddled. He has not done that since and the two are now thick as thieves. I think Kinsey also had some psychological basis for the illness, but she wasn't "faking". Stress and worry do worse things to animal bodies than humans. You did the right thing taking her to the vet and loving on her. It's blatantly obvious that you care about your puppos and sheepies. Sending love from the States ❤️

My take on the Golden Girls is the same take I’d have on a dealership owner buying an (otherwise scrap) used boat from the business at a discount for a personal project:
There’s no way to keep and afford maintenance on every trade-in, nobody *needs* a personal pleasure boat, and you have to sell off 99.99% of even the running ones for refurbishment or scrap. BUT if you can mindfully afford to write off (or buy) a couple of your favorites from the business, and having/ working on them makes you happy, idk why anyone would judge you for that as a business owner.
You’ve transitioned the golden girls from meat in the supply chain to personal pets because you’ve decided you can afford to house and keep them and you’ve got personal feelings toward them. You’re not attached to literally every sheep, and you’ve explained why almost all the males need shipped (except the very nicest ones, who get pulled back into the business as working sires to improve your flock’s temperament). You’ve got a little retirement village of sheep as a luxury item instead of something like horses or a speedboat. This is your splurge. Just because you’re in the sheep/ meat industry doesn’t make that wrong from a business or moral perspective.
Plus, you can think of them as an investment in the channel and future PR stuff. How many people would pay $$$ for wool items from Big Mama or Billy’s Mom specifically? You could absolutely auction off the “celebrities’” blankets for a charity donation/ auction and (if Canada is anything like the US) write the value of the donation off on your taxes. And then the golden girls will have helped a good cause and “paid rent” in saved money, so to speak. Appearances from them in shows to get kids into farming, so you’re investing in the future of your industry! They’re such friendly ewes and you can tell kids, truthfully, that they were working animals for years. Lots of ways the golden girls could work for you besides just making babies!

I'm not a professional, but I did train service dogs and am obsessed with dogs/dog behavior. Border collies are the smartest breed of dog. The behavior you described is classic smart dog bewilderment! With dogs, consistency creates confidence. And a confident dog is a happy dog. Her consistencies were what she was supposed to do (and not) every day and what to expect in return (her humans' reactions and behaviors, where to cuddle and sleep, meal time, work time, play time, etc). So when she was deprived of her expected nighttime comforts, consistency was broken. Loss of consistency, loss of confidence. It confused and frightened her. She DOES know you take extra care of her when she's hurt/sick/after surgery/etc so she feigned it, looking to regain that consistency. And the fact that she exhibited similar behavior the next morning tells me she associated being left out as a scary thing. Which is why she slunk away from you. And why you had to carry her most of the way to the barn. She was nervous that you were mad at her and didn't know what to expect. When she realized you wanted to be with her and her morning was going to continue like every other morning in her life she was happy again. You did nothing wrong in letting her sleep outside. It would help prevent future bewildered behavior if you showed her a place to sleep outside and desensitized her to it over the course of several days or weeks. That way it becomes a known part of life and sleeping there some nights won't be an issue.

You still might want to check Kinsey for tick borne illness. Lymes disease can cause intermittent lameness as well as excessive thirst and bladder control issues. It comes and goes. Even if you have them on a good tick preventative...it only takes one bite for them to get it. I had two dogs come down with it and they were primarily "INSIDE" dogs....so it doesn't take much. Better to check if she has more lameness episodes...

Border Collies are smart, neurotic and prone to anxiety and depression just because they notice and interpret things so much more. It's part of what makes them good herders. It also means that they're more likely to act out when getting nervous, or sink into a depression if the humans seem mad at them. Kinsey may've also been a little stiff for being out overnight, but I can see it being more about psychological things.
If you don't already, maybe start crating her at night? Like how she'd calm down when you would tie her up during sheep handling, it could help establish that there isn't supposed to be something to herd and keep track of, easing night anxieties and lessen accidents.

Love seeing the golden girls. I wonder if Marge and Big Mama will slim down following around Billy’s Mom like that. Those are some special sheep!

I love how the golden girls all follow together in a line and are always together as their own little flock

I noticed Kinsey was slowing down in your previous video (from her usual frenetic pace). This has been brewing. Hope she is already improving.

I love how the “Golden Girls” always follow that one dark lamb. She is a real leader.

Her thinking you were mad doesnt account for the throwing up. The pain killers may have helped whatever was making her unwell.
