Please get sheep again. Don't let it break you. You guys got this! This was so informative. I never thought of using a chicken tractor for this. It is genius.
That was a very courageous move, getthing these three parties together. Very good video that will surely be very valuable to some people! Interesting to learn about sheep psychology.
Wow y'all!!! Everything about this was perfectly laid out..in every way..and if any problems come up..y'all covered that also..great job..y'all are just precious..ty..xoxo blessings to y'all in every way ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Gosh, my heart was broken watching you choke-up and filming the sheep. I cried for you and the poor sheep! I am so impressed you got a professional to assess what happened. I was also impressed with the couple you purchased the sheep. They wanted to learn too. They sure want their purchasers to be successful. Excellent content!
This is such a great video and message. When we work together to learn and problem solve, we all win. Thank you to the folks who reached out to the shepherdess!!
O glad you had Rachel out to get the layout of your pasture and so glad she was able to identify what you need to do to be successful at shepherding sheep. The sheep tractor is a great idea!
I live in an apartment in Munich Germany. So, no chance of raising sheep in my back bedroom. BUT, I grew up where people around me raised animals for food. We didn't call it homesteading at the time. I was always fascinated at how it all worked. I've been watching 'homesteading' videos for a while now. As a consumer (that's what I am as a city-dweller) it's helped me look and question what I'm buying, from whom and how it's raised. Videos like this help me greatly.
We are all learning. Unfortunately this is no longer common knowledge. The positive that came from this is that your helping to make these things common knowledge again💚
We never had sheep on our farm and see how much hands on they are. This conversation has been very interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience with us 😊
Sheep are on our overall plan for 2026 and I'm sooooo glad that you posted both your terrible experience and this consultation. Thank you for being vulnerable and willing to share this with us--it's really really helpful.
Jason and Lorraine, this was a fantastic, informative video! I thought it was wonderful that the original owners were part of the discussion as well. It wasn't something they had to do.
Great communication... well thought through... awesome problem solving! This is what "community" is all about... we support one another to keep us all at our best. Thanks to all 3 channels for an awesome lesson on sheep. Blessings Kiddos! 🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕👵
Tis a wonderful thing when the interwebz community brings stuff like this together. I live in the heart of the city, but I still enjoyed this video. Her knowledge had me captivated.
Ive always heard either sheep are the easiest or the hardest animal to have. This video helps bring together the reasons why both can be true for the complete novice.
That was a great consultation! We all make mistakes. I would have done the same as you Jason. I would have never known this and that different breeds are different in this way. I would love to learn more about this breed too. Yes plz try again. ❤ would love to see you guys milk sheep.
Thank you for showing us your failures as well as your successes! We’re hoping to get sheep soon, and we’re really grateful to learn from your experiences. Love your channel!
She helped you not feel horrible and helped the farm you got them from have a better grasp on schooling new shepards how to integrate sheep to your farm. Now we just have to wait until you get more sheep!!!
Jason: I’m so glad you are going to try sheep again. I felt so bad for you and have admired your attitude in that loss. I so hope this time around you have a great experience.
Loved the value of this video! Not just for sheep but for its fantastic outlook on homesteading! It's hard but keep going! It can't be as hard as going to a job that you are unhappy with. ❤ Thanks Jason!
Hey Jason! Way to go on reaching out for support and learning with Rachel! We raise Katahdin sheep in TN (Sparta) and went through the same thing with our first 3 lambs (one got killed in the electric netting). Since then we’ve learned a ton and have grown our flock to 20 (and still growing). We rotational graze and raise for meat. If you ever want to come visit we’d love to show you around and share how we do things. We still only use electric netting and it’s worked fine since our initial incident. As for flock size, I HIGHLY recommend starting with at least 5 to give a sense of a flock. The bigger the flock the safer they feel.
I love the consultation. No one knows everything, the trick is being humble enough to ask for help from a place of understanding. Big ups to all of you involved. This is the stuff that is very informative to learn, thanks for the videos.
Jason, It is so great that you were able to find Rachael or Rachael was able to come to you. However, this meeting happened. Fantastic! Good for you, having her come to your homestead as well her willingness to also go to the farm where your sheep came from. Thank you, Rachael, for all of your knowledge and help given to "Sow the Land" homesteaders. It was painful for all of us UA-camrs who have come to love and admire the "Sow the Land" family when everything went so terribly badly with their sheep experience. We were all hurting for them. Rachael, Congratulations on your book. I'm not a homesteader, and I know i will never have the pleasure of owing sheep, but I believe your book is in my very near future. It really looks like your book will be worth the read. Thank you, Jason, for this wonderful, knowledgeable video. Now we all know about Rachael, a shepherd, and a wealth of information to help us all, and she has a book we all can learn from, too. Thank you ssoooo much. ❤❤❤
Jason, I'm old. Had sheep and other animals as well. Advise: Build stalls in one of your building. Keep new sheep in the barn for at least a week. Put them out in the day, put them up at night. Simple.
This is hands down my favorite video on Sow the Land! The courage to put this out on social media was outstanding and I learned a ton. Thanks for being vulnerable for your audience. 👏🏽✊🏽
So glade y'all got some help. Unfortunately loss of animals is part of it. It shouldn't be for granted but if you done all you could don't beat yourself just learn and move on. Y'all are good people you tube see it in every video.
So glad you have got great wisdom from Rachel,so much to learn about sheep,I’m sure you weren’t aware off.looking forward to seeing you try again. These things happen, with livestock there’s death.👍
This was fabulous to see. I was clueless too when I got my first and so far only sheep, Lizzy, Shetland, Romney mix. After 3 days, she disappeared for 5 days and I was so broken over it. Turns out she climbed the large, steep hill behind us and landed happily in a cow pasture. The farmer looked out and couldn't figure out what he was seeing... amongst all those black Angus... would have loved to see the look on his face... Lizzy was content. She was raised with horses so was used to large critters... got her home via the farmers side by side mule...? Put a long leash on her so if she started to take off, I could step on it. However, my two large breed sheltie dogs protected her from the gitgo... they're natural instinct was inspiring. Had her for 5 years and had to rehome her. She died at age 15... gave some beautiful wool.
Good evening, Perfect having the 3 families together to help one another with sheep. Great 71 FRIDAY SHOPTALK SEE YA NEXT TIME. SE MICHIGAN 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🇺🇸🙏🇮🇱🙏👍
We have no plans to get sheep, but, wow, this was a terrific video! This whole big idea of learning, trying, failing, grieving, and then more asking and learning...and trying again is so very encouraging. I think maybe that is my biggest reason for being such a fan of you and Lorraine is your candid approach to the process and your honesty about your challenges and successes. Blessings to you and your family, Marie
I so appreciate this video... I am researching how to raise my own sheep for Milk and I would never have thought about how fearful the sheep can be in a new environment. Sometimes, this happen to that you are able to help teach others. Thank you Jason for this wonderful video... it has given me more to think about.
How nice of these folks, to come and give you such in depth information on raising sheep. Good luck with finding just the right breed for y'all. Thanks for sharing. Have a Blessed day.
That was a very good video. I felt so bad when your sheep died and was sad for you. Great information and very informative. Thank you Sow The Land and Rachel.
The two different homesteads used different types of electric fencing. I think the netting is available in very small sections for training purposes. Set up the small section inside the non electric sturdy fencing.
🌟I love these educational, problem resolution videos, very valuable in those moments of failure or when concerns arise. Thank you, guys, again for this content! 😊
She is an excellent teacher. When she perceived that it wasn’t being understood that they needed a smaller area she explained it in several different ways. One way was to keep them in zone one or two, which are generally very small because they are very close to the house. Another way flat saying that the pen was too big, another way stating that they needed a small pen. Hopefully the message got across.
OMG, so glad I watching this and that you guys made this video. As someone who doesn't have sheep but really wants to have a property some day with them, this was amazing and so helpful. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Great Video & congratulations for calling for Help instead of just replacing the sheep- she is extremely knowledgeable & wished more people would call on her experience before buying sheep. Cheers Denise- Australia
Such and incredibly informative video. I pray you take another try at sheep. You have gained so much knowledge. But I support whatever decision you make. Your family is amazingly humble and thats what makes you so successful ❤❤
I loved this video. There is no better commentary about the phrase "acting like sheep" than listening to someone who understands sheep psychology and can explain exactly how sheep see the world around them. I was expecting to learn something about livestock. Instead, I learned something about the state of human beings being constantly forced to live in a state of fear. This explains so much to me.
This is one of the best teaching video I’ve seen. I am taking it as showing that you just don’t import an animal to your farm by just putting it in a pasture situation, but that you need to incorporate it first and make it feel safe. This could be true more with some animals than others, but any new types research so that you know what you are doing. Al lost his highland bull. I believe it was possibly frightened by the moose that had been seen around there about that time and the accident happened. And of course it was still learning the area. Lots to think about when you acquire new animals. We need to give them a little time to feel at home and know the territory and the wildlife around. All good.
Jason we love your family and this channel. Keep on doing a great job. Next time you will have a better experience. When you know better, you do better. 😊 I learned a lot from this video. Thanks !
Oh wow, she was really informative! This gave you some great tools to integrate into your next attempt. I KNOW how devastating that was for you, so hopefully this gives you peace of mind.
Like how you roll, honest, humble and with humor.
Well said!
Please get sheep again. Don't let it break you. You guys got this! This was so informative. I never thought of using a chicken tractor for this. It is genius.
Brilliant idea for a video - a problem arises and you find a professional to help solve the problem 💥
Thank all 3 homesteads for this video.
I am so glad you have an answer to why the tragedy happened. Fascinating.
That was a very courageous move, getthing these three parties together. Very good video that will surely be very valuable to some people! Interesting to learn about sheep psychology.
Excellent video, very educational.
Glad you enjoyed it

Didn’t realize there was so much to know about raising sheep. God bless.
I love how she thought it out and worked out a good solution for THOSE sheep.
Jason it’s a learning opportunity for everyone. Thank you for sharing your consultation.
A real man admits his mistakes and lack of knowledge. Jason, you are a real man.
This is such a great video and message. When we work together to learn and problem solve, we all win.
Thank you to the folks who reached out to the shepherdess!!
She’s wonderful and thank you everyone for making this happen. 😊
This is a gold mine for me.
Can’t wait till I get some sheep.
Do it y’all!
Hi.... Jason and Loraine thanks you for showing your video homestead 🎄🏡🐔🐓🐣🐥🐤🦃🦮🐈⬛🐑🐄🐖🐷🐝🎥👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋👍👍👍
So glad you were able to get the help and information for your property. Look forward to when you get sheep again.
Wonderful information. You were so lucky to have her come to your homestead.

Fantastic video. Love this. You have always been so compassionate towards your animals and I have appreciated that the most.
Yes, Rachel was awesome and very informative! Great sheep consultant!
Really great step toward a sheep reboot! You are a true honest presenter Jason, and I appreciate your direct informative ways.

Great video! You all have a teacher’s heart. And humble heart.💜
Very interesting. Rachel really gives the mind set and tools needed to successfully raise sheep. Jason, you really should go for it again.
I so appreciate this video... I am researching how to raise my own sheep for Milk and I would never have thought about how fearful the sheep can be in a new environment. Sometimes, this happen to that you are able to help teach others. Thank you Jason for this wonderful video... it has given me more to think about.
So glad for this video. We plan to add sheep to our homestead in the spring❤️
The good thing about a serious farmer, is the ability and willingness to learn and improve. Let’s keep pressing forward. Thank you for the video ❤
That was fantastic. So much valuable information. I have a barn but it’s nowhere near zone 1. I’ll have to build a tractor when we finally get sheep.
The barn doesn’t HAVE to be in Zone 1. It just helps for the sheep to see you consistently when they first come onto your farm
Rachel was very informative! She did a great job explaining. Knowing sheep psychology seems to be something to be aware of to a new sheep owner.
How nice of these folks, to come and give you such in depth information on raising sheep. Good luck with finding just the right breed for y'all. Thanks for sharing. Have a Blessed day.
Interesting. I appreciate how much you and Lorraine care❤
That was a very good video. I felt so bad when your sheep died and was sad for you. Great information and very informative. Thank you Sow The Land and Rachel.
Great help, you are very lucky and humbly are great full for it. Good luck with future sheep.
In my experience Cluns are pretty flighty in general. I still think that you guys need a good farm dog, that would help on so many fronts.
I love ALL Sow the Land videos!
Wow what a video, it was full of stuff that anybody new to sheep will need. It was very informative.
