Cheers from NZ for the Video. I was scratching my head when I wired up the radio and the controls didn't work. The reason was the programming of the stereo as you have pointed out. Great vid.
Omg finally! Thanks for the vid man. Been looking for this specifically but always found a vid just a little bit off. Whether it was the wrong year or a car with JBL and an amp and no good explanation for the need of an interface. I ran into the same thing wondering why one would be neccessary for my 2nd gen prius
Awesome! So glad I could help. I had trouble finding the information as well- I think I found it on a Tacoma forum and figured out that it applies to the Prius as well!
3rd Gen 2013 has the same 20 pin plug, wonder if wires are the same? Leaving that plug disconnected since it didn't fit the new touchscreen, steering wheel has lost the backlight and all function.
They only way is to mimic a button using a microcontroller - register the button being pressed (the resistor ladder evaluates the connection with a specific resistance for each button) - use a software based state machine to see how long the button was pressed - expose the specific resistor value via another resistor ladder to the stereo unit
good stuff my man. what did you use to secure the breadboard leads? i cant really think of any efficient way apart from electrical tape but i want to avoid that because the Australian summer will likely melt it into a gooey mess.
Yeah I think I just used electrical tape, sorry! It doesn't get that hot where I live. You could use T tap wire fittings on the other side of the plug instead of the breadboard leads? Let me know if you come up with a better way!

Hey, I have a quick question! So, the new CD player I have for the Prius does not have the mic input or remote input jacks in it. Would there be any way around this without having to buy the fancy adaptor?
Hi, The stereo needs to have the capability of accepting stereo controls, and the ability to program the controls. If your stereo doesn't have a remote control input in the back, it probably doesn't support steering wheel controls, but you can take a look in your manual and check it out. The expensive adapter is only needed if your stereo can't communicate directly with the signals sent from the steering wheel controls. The adapter basically translates the the signals sent from the steering wheel controls into a signal that the stereo understands. Hope that helps!!!
@@stevevanpelt4475 Okay, thank you so much! I unfortunately think it might not be compatible. D; I don't know if this is a totally ignorant question, BUT, do you know if I will be able to work the heating and air with just the resistor? Or do I still need the power source of the stereo?
