I have and for a feature film adaptation adapting all five books in one film it was really well done and almost on par with the film _Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events._ Although part of me did wish it was adapted as two films so it includes all elements from all five books since the film did remove elements and certain characters such as the dwarfs who work for Mulgarath. Fortunately there is going to be a Television series that will premiere on Roku and will be more close to the original books.
For a feature film adaptation adapting all five books of _The Spiderwick Chronicles_ in one film, it was really well done adaptation and almost on par with the film _Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events._ Freddie Highmore did an amazing performance portraying both Simon and Jared Grace, alongside the vocal performances of Martin Short as Timbletack, Seth Rogen as Hogsqueal and Nick Nolte as the terrifying ogre Mulgarath. Even the VFX of the various creatures and fairies done by ILM and Tippett Studios respectively and the score by the late James Horner was also well done. A part of me did wish it was adapted as two films so it includes all elements from all five books since there were many elements and certain characters such as the dwarfs who work for Mulgarath that were written out in the final film. Fortunately, there is going to be a new Television series of _The Spiderwick Chronicles_ that will premiere on Roku sometime in 2024 and will be more close to the original five books.
I love the film of A series of Unfortunate Events, probably more so than the whole Netflix series. The tone, acting, music and costume design all outshine the show imo. I think because those books were longer, they had a slightly harder job adapting multiple stories into one film than Spiderwick, but I love it regardless. The other iconic Freddie Highmore role for me growing up was in Arthur & the Invisibles. Another story about a boy discovering the secret magical world all around him that an older relative found, that was based off a book series. I also remember a sequel, but it turns out there were two, but for the UK they smushed 2 & 3 together into one, weird. Even stranger was the odd horror film made by the original creator that was like a meta look at the film called: Arthur, malédiction.
@@robertbrookes2000Besides _Arthur and the Invisibles_ I also appreciate Freddie’s work in _Two Brothers, Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory_ and _August Rush._ He sure has come along way from doing these films to Bates Motel and now _The Good Doctor_

Okay, I haven't seen this movie in YEARS! I was worried about rewatching it and finding out it wasn't as good as I remembered, but thankfully I was wrong. Something that never really affected me was the time Lucy spent away from her father. Watching it now hits differently. It's even better than I remembered. I'm glad you guys watched it. :)
What I really appreciate about the movie are the designs of the creatures. The goblins having more of a Frog or Toad inspiration and the Hobgoblin having more of a Pig design. Also Red Cap isn’t just a nickname for the goblin as it’s a type of Goblin in folklore.
I recommend checking out the original field guide, all the creatures have a similar level of love and inspiration in their designs. It also delves into the different legends and folklore behind them.
Thank you for reacting to this movie, it's one of my favorite childhood films. Few things: 1: The five books from which the movie was based on expands more on the fantastical world round them: how the Elves, instead of sylphs, guard the secrets of faeries, how dwarves live in a nearby quarry, how there's also a river troll between the estate and the goblin camp, and how Mulgarath has a castle in a nearby junkyard. 2: The ending was a bit different in the books; Arthur steps out of the leaves that keeps him from dying and dies in front of Lucinda. 3: I love how Mallory calls Jared "Psycho" and actor Freddie Highmore later plays Norman Bates. 4: There's a sequel series of three books set in Florida (this one is set in New England) where step-siblings help a nixie with a Giant problem. 5: The books are getting a new adaptation. It was finished and meant for Disney+ but it was moved to RokuTV during the strikes.

There's a new version coming out soon!.. So that will be interesting to see what they do with it, along with the New Percy Jackson. Cool Reaction as ever.
I hope they do it justice. It's set for 8 episodes. Disney+ already completed the series but then didn't air it so Roku bought the rights or something. Since it was a Disney series, they seem to have done the typical "diversity" changes so the Grace's are mixed race kids which is...whatever, doesn't affect the story, but they also seem to have aged them up or maybe the pics are just aged since they finished filming back in 2021? I played the video game for the Xbox 360. Some lore about the goblins: There are two types, the bipedal ones and the ones on all fours. The bipedal goblins are more intelligent and can speak + use weapons. Redcap, the goblin with the coat and sword actually got his outfit and sword from a dead soldier he found during world war 2.

I think I might've been one of the people who recommended this film. It was an absolute classic from my childhood. I don't think I even read the whole series, but I did listen to some audiobooks that I'm pretty sure were unabridged, as it included book only plot points like: dwarves who had kidnapped Malory, and a river troll Jared had to escape from. So yeah there was a little more world building the film didn't have time for. But wow I think the film holds up tremendously. The effects look pretty good, I love how the creatures look tangible, like the goblins being a bit frog-like & the fairies camouflaging with flowers. The dual roles of Jared & Simon for Freddie Highmore is done well too, they are portrayed quite differently. And here's a big spoiler that I still remember from the book... In the original end, Arthur Spiderwick chooses to turn to dust after seeing his daughter one last time. Certainly a more bittersweet end than Lucinda going to live with him under the Slyph's spell. While double checking some of this, I found that there was going to be a Disney+ tv adaptation, which whilst it's apparently finished filming, due to cost-cutting it's being handed over to another company 'The Roku Channel', so it does look like it'll still come out. The cast is as follows: Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace Joy Bryant as Helen Grace Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace Jack Dylan Grazer as Thimbletack Christian Slater as Mulgarath Sounds exciting, hope the effects hold up though, as that could easily ruin it.
Ah, this is such an underrated classic. I remember arguing with my brother because he had all the cool merch and I didn't. Neither me nor my siblings actually read it, but the movie was based off of a book series written by Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi, and there was a journal based off of that for kids to "find their own creatures." I always thought of the movie as fantasy, but modern, more muted in its aesthetic, and I remember loving it as a kid. I''m so glad it's getting more attention now. Truly a hidden gem! Also, this storytellers' guild sounds so interesting! I'll be sure to look into it.
Yeah. The actor is playing two parts. That Freddy Highmore. He was in the reboot of Charlie and the chocolate factory. Then he went on to play Norman Bates in the TV show of Bates Motal and then went on to play in The Good Doctor. Fantastic Actor he is.
This is one of my comfort movies!! I love it! And I personally don’t mind that the fantasy aspect is more contained and less epic. It’s very whimsical and fun to me!
OH MY GOSHHH!! Spiderwick Chronicles is one of my favorite childhood movies along with Dragon Heart, Stardust, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, Harry Potter series, and Arthur and the Minimoys. It’s just such a great concept and story and I’m so glad to see you guys react to this masterpiece!
This movie remains one of my all time favorite movies of all time and it's been a decade since I've seen it. I can't put into words how much I love and adore thus movie, 8yo me was in absolute awe the guest time they saw it and It still brings me so much joy, seeing others react to it makes me so so happy
This movie always feels so nostalgic, I had the PC game back in the day and it was so fun, you could read the book and explore around to find faeries. I enjoyed it so much. I wish I could still play it!
yk you should watch Arthur and the Minimoys. probably also bc it has the same main actor, but this reminded me of that movie, which i loved so much when i was younger. i think you'd like it.
13:33 That stone that the boy can see the goblins is a Witches Stone or Hag Stone. It is said that through looking we can see fairies and witches and can bring protection. In Coraline the protagonist used one too to find the souls. The hole in the stone occures because of some kind of corrosion
The movie heavily condensed the already short book series. The five books are under 100 pages each but include Mulgarath and the goblins hiding a fortress in a junkyard, Jared pulling a knife on Mulgarath at Mallory’s fencing tournament, a major faction of elves, and dwarves that build mechanical bugs and trees.
STOP this is my "backround noise while I work", "Childhood Nostalgia " AND my "something to fall asleep to" go👏🏾 to👏🏾 filmmmm👏🏾 aahhhhhh thank u soooo much for this reactionnnn✨✨✨✨
I know this movie back to front and listen to the soundtrack on a daily basis!! I just recently read the books and they were great too! There's a book series called "The Cruel Prince" which is written by the same author, though this one is focused on the Fae and many more creatures in the magical world. It sort of has the same vibe as spiderwick since they mix real word vs magical world. The author has actually said that The Spiderwick Cronicles takes place in the same world as The Cruel Prince, which made my experience reading both so much better, knowing that somewhere, the Grace children walked as do Cardan and Jude from the other series. :)
I never read the books. But I was about 10 when I watched the movie and I could not sleep, i just remember it freaked me out I don’t remember anything about the movie. But it’s funny because I grew up to be very into like creepy fairies and fantasy.
I havent seen this film in ages. But as soon as I started seeing the young actor for Jared/Simon I knew I recognized him from something else. He's the guy who plays the main character in The Good Doctor. And he was Charlie in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie which had Johnny Depp in it. I had totally forgotten he was in this movie too
I had never even heard of the movie until I stumbled across it on TV. I quickly became certain that it was an outstanding fantasy movie, with all sorts of little touches that are very satisfying. It has humour and yet at the same time the sense of menace is maintained at a very high level. I would absolutely give it a 9 out of 10.
I remember seeing this with my quite a bit younger sister at the time, can't remember how old I was but at least mid teens. This was the first film that I realized if blood wasn't red it's ok, as far as a rating goes. I especially remember the one goblin that gets half his head blown off from the ketchup bomb.
Oh my gods i was actually, just a few days ago, wondering if there would ever be a reaction to this movie! It occupies an interesting space in my head as a movie i randomly came across while looking for dvds and have watched a few times but i only remember its existence every few years This is very ramble-y lol i was about to take a nap when i saw the thumbnail for this
This film is incredible. The graphics are so fantastic and close to the books illustrations, the world is a lot bigger but obviously couldn't all be put into 1 film. My youngest son (now 17) was obsessed with this film and we watched it almost every day for years. He also had the XBOX game and the final chase with Mulgarath up through the dumbwaiter, through the attic and onto the roof is bloody terrifying🤣
I loved this movie as a child! There was actually a book series based off the movie I owned though I wasn't interested reading at all as a child so I hardly ever read it but I did like all the drawings that was sometimes in the books. I honestly missed watching this movie, it was super amazingly done.
The kid who played the twins is Freddy Highmore and he played young Norman Bates in Bates Motel. And Charlie in Charlie and the chocolate factory. And Peter in Finding Neverland. And the voice of Astro boy.
My brother and i loooooooved this film and the books when we were kids, after it came out we were serious superfans lol. We used to pretend on windy days that we were fighting goblins, my brother who used to build stuff actually made the stone they use and wrote his own version of the book with drawings of swamp trolls and little dragonfly wings he found, we'd pretend that we had a brownie living in our house called Needlethread and i even built a little birdhouse with honey and a bed and everything :D we were GIANT nerds and i still have some of the drawings my brother did of some creatures he designed - he invented one called the Crillquin which was a little mouse/rabbit thing with wings and eight eyes and he would steal socks for his nest (needless to say, it was just an excuse for why our socks kept going missing haha)
Funnily enough I wanted to watch this movie when I was about 6 years old for no reason at all. Oh my...what an experience. Especially the scene with the floor planks being lifted haunted me so much me and my mother left the theatre while my father and my older brother finished the movie. Our house has floor planks too, which made everything worse too.
Thank you for reacting this is one of my favorite movies I used to watch it a lot last time I saw it I think 3 or 4 years ago because I forgot the name of the movie. Sadly I can’t watch the reaction now I have an exam tomorrow so I will watch it after tomorrow but it is one of my childhood movies it is amazing I used to rewatch it alone or with my family so many times even thought I used to get scared when I watched it as a child but I couldn’t stop rewatching ❤ ❤ 😂 😂.
i own every single book, field guide, and journal surrounding this series. i loved it so much as a kid and truly believed it was real, my mom even wrote me a letter from spiderwick lol. this movie is such a good adaption, my literal ONLY complaint is that they were all in on exploring the room, it wasn’t just jared
I loved this movie as an child, I still love to this day. I used to watch it all the time and no one knew what I was talking about. The only part that scares me and still does is the big snake.
Freddie Highmore (actor that played the twins) is one of my favorite actors from childhood, I also recommend you guys watch Arthur and the Invisibles (especially the first one) since he was THE child actor that did a lot of fantasy genre movies back then
I only remember this movie existed because of the happy meal toys. I had been wondering what the movie was called as of late, so I’m glad you guys posted this
The books are wonderful and the ART in the books is stunning. Movie is ok but the books are SO much more magical and mysterious. They are finally making a TV Series coming out later this year, i think the books would totally work best as a series.
Another movie(trilogy) that focuses on a small scale is "Arthur and the Invisibles", but small scale in more ways than one. Also, the actor that played the twins in this movie plays the main character of "Arthur and the Invisibles". It's...a strange movie, but also kinda fascinating how they do things pretty differently.

The cast is as follows:
Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace
Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace
Joy Bryant as Helen Grace
Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace
Jack Dylan Grazer as Thimbletack
Christian Slater as Mulgarath
Sounds exciting, hope the effects hold up though, as that could easily ruin it.
A kid in my class won a competition and we got a free class trip to the cinema to see this. It was so good! 😊
ah yes, the first movie to give kid-me a nightmare and a forever irrational fear of nick nolte
I'll be sure to look into it.
this movie and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events were both amazing to watch while growing up
So happy you guys are checking this movie out, when I was a kid I was obsessed with the movies, the book and even the game
This is gonna be great. Thanks!
OMG!! You guys have no idea for how many months I've been trying to to remember the title of this movie 😂 finally. Thank you for the reaction.
To think the Director of "Mean Girls" directed this movie =)
STOP this is my "backround noise while I work", "Childhood Nostalgia " AND my "something to fall asleep to"
go👏🏾
to👏🏾
filmmmm👏🏾
aahhhhhh thank u soooo much for this reactionnnn✨✨✨✨
Ahw my childhood altough its only 10yrs ago 😅
I loved this as a kid, the books and game too, and still do. Most definitely a forgotten classic.
Oh my gods i was actually, just a few days ago, wondering if there would ever be a reaction to this movie! It occupies an interesting space in my head as a movie i randomly came across while looking for dvds and have watched a few times but i only remember its existence every few years
This is very ramble-y lol i was about to take a nap when i saw the thumbnail for this
i literally forgot this film existed. thank you for bringing a core memory of being scared and fascinated as a kid back to life
This film is incredible.
OMGG THIS IS ONE OF MY FAV CHILDHOOD MOVIES!!! like Peter pan 2003, etc. SHOCK, HAPPY & EXCITED!!~ thank u 😻🙌
I remember watching this movie years ago almost completely forgot this movie even existed
This is such a classical movie Amazing I saw it in theaters so many amazing creatures. It always makes you wonder what’s really out there
The invisible creatures scratching the various characters and biting and causing bleeding was truly traumatizing as a kid.
mannnn this movie is pure nostalgia for me. i loved it so much as a kid, i remember watching it religiously on my pink iPod nano :)
I remember seeing this in theaters when I was a little kid with my grampa. Always a good memory
Yay! Loved reading the books as a kid and was my first series I got into. Also had the big field guide showing all the creatures.
i never comment, but the GASPP i let out!!! my favourite childhood movie im so happy u watched it💕
i own every single book, field guide, and journal surrounding this series. i loved it so much as a kid and truly believed it was real, my mom even wrote me a letter from spiderwick lol. this movie is such a good adaption, my literal ONLY complaint is that they were all in on exploring the room, it wasn’t just jared
I loved this movie as an child, I still love to this day. I used to watch it all the time and no one knew what I was talking about. The only part that scares me and still does is the big snake.
You guys have no idea how many times I watched this movie as a kid, this really got me into fantasy genre it's a great memory from my childhood 🥺💜
You guys should react to Arthur and the Minimoys or the Invisibles ....I saw two titles for this one. Freddie Highmore is also the lead role !
This feels good, 'cause I recommended it.
I loved the books as a kid! it definitely missing bits of the books as it put 5 books into 1 movie, but its still well done
I always have and always will love this movie, i rewatch it so often tbh 😭
I loved this film as a child but I really miss that they cut out the dwarves.
Freddie Highmore (actor that played the twins) is one of my favorite actors from childhood, I also recommend you guys watch Arthur and the Invisibles (especially the first one) since he was THE child actor that did a lot of fantasy genre movies back then
I LOVE THIS MOVIE SMM 😭 I watched it a lot as a kid, and I remember being terrified of the villain
I freaking love this movie ❤❤❤
More lovely childhood memories 💚💚💚
OMG! Might not have been my comment, but i requested this some time ago! I'm so happy right now! Love this movie
This was my childhood movie, thank you so much for reacting to it. ❤❤❤😊😊
That scene with the dad turning into the ogre scarred me for life as a kid
It's...a strange movie, but also kinda fascinating how they do things pretty differently.
omg ive been waiting like a year for this omgggg
