  • We demo a selection of flanger effects pedals for electric guitar including the Thorpy Camoflange, Dreadbox Komo Rebi, Retro-Sonic Flanger and a vintage Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress.
So, um, yes he has! In this episode we pick up from where we left off well over a year ago in ‘Dan Wants A New Flanger’, which you can watch here: • A New Flanger That Sta...
Like a fine wine or maybe one of those truly gopping mouldy cheeses, the question of Dan's flanger has needed time to ferment and mature into a well rounded answer… not least while Thorpy was developing the new Camoflange with the help of British guitar effects guru, Dan Coggins. Which means there are no prizes whatsoever for guessing what Dan’s new favourite flanger is. He’s really quite ripe about it.
    Let’s flange and…

Hey guys! I love both of you and the content you all put out and I will never stop enjoying it it, but I wanted to share something and hopefully you all see this. Now I know in the grand scheme of things my opinion doesn’t matter and you all are going to and should do what’s best and right for you guys- and there’s nothing wrong with that whatsoever. I just wanted to say I first found you guys years ago with no to little knowledge of pedals, pedalboards, and the like and I can now attribute a large portion of my knowledge to you guys. From your videos, you have equipped me with information that’s actually been able to help a lot of my friends with their music and effects questions and also with purchasing equipment that best suits them- which is a huge deal. I just wanted to tell y’all please don’t stop making informative videos that really go in depth about how pedals, amps, and guitars work and how they all intermingle with each other. You guys really are a valuable resource whether you think so or not and you both are truly making an impact in people’s lives- at least in my life. Thank you both so much and I hope you all have a blessed holiday season!!!

This might explain it better. I was messing around with Flanging/Phasing in 1967. Michael Dacre Barclay of Decca Records showed me how to get it on a mono domestic tape recorder. It simply involved putting a shiny piece of plastic (i.e. slippery) over the erase head - in order that one can record and playback at the same time. Now once you've recorded the unaffected bit of music that you want flanged/phased you introduce the mic adjacent to the speaker that the music is playing back through. In other words you are recording from the speaker the music playing back on the same piece of tape. By moving the mic a short distance back and towards the speaker the effect is made and recorded on to the original dry piece of music.
No pedals of this existed anywhere then. Great fun! I was sixteen at the time and working at Decca (where I was also a pal of Mike Vernon) it felt like being at the centre of the universe. Cheers, Pete.

Hi, guys. The Komorebi (木漏れ日) is pronounced with long O's. The Re has a long A sound, as in "ray". Finally, the Bi is a long E, as in "bee". Komorebi means "sunbeams" in Japanese and that is, in fact, what the kanji spells out between the knobs. Greetings from Tokyo. ❤️ Think sunlight streaming through a forest canopy and you've got the meaning. [ Edit to add: I have an early 2000s analog Maxon FL301 reissue flanger that I love to bits. Dialling back the width and regen and putting a Danelectro Tuna Melt tremolo behind it is pretty freaking tasty. ]

@@stevekirby7333 It's usually input gain on the recording channel strips. Conscious of clipping. Otherwise it might be subtle once recorded but in the room just makes things about more comfortable and flowing for me and Dan. I think a lot of people maybe don't realise these shows are basically one take, playing and everything. It really helps to be comfortable and enjoying the sounds. That taste of Thropy just opens up the sound and makes it huge. What a tone! Flangers have always come closest to the slow Leslie sound for me when you want to play Badge or something. And several of these do that. But the Thorpy has a sort of Dimension sound to it that just fills up the room.
Dan, if you want to accentuate the leading edge or transient of a note, try turning the pick to the side as Matt Schofield does. With a square edged pick (as opposed to a nicely smoothed one, or worn) I've found that I can get closer to that dynamic thing that he does where notes jump with extra thickness as well as in level. Not the same as a leading edge "chirp" but just that grab you by the collar "listen to this note" thing that he has.

I completely get where Dan is coming from here. Once you find *your flanger* it bleeds into your soul, let alone your sound, & trying to find a replacement/alternative is a bastard of a struggle.

I completely agree with your appreciation of a more subtle use of effects, particularly time effects. Just a slight bit of flange to add, as you say, “shimmer”, really works for me, so much more than the “Here’s a flanger on”, sound. Same for delay. chorus, tremolo, etc., in so many instances.
I have had the TC Electronics, Stereo Chorus, Pitch Modulator and Flanger (black box with attached power cord) on my board since the early ‘90s when it was considered to be the absolute best chorus, etc., pedal. I expect that you guys are quite aware of it. In my opinion, it still provides the most musical chorus and flanger and is unmatched by anything since.

Halfway through this deep-dive into flangers (educational as usual) I noticed your That Pedal Show anagram t-shirts. That's awesome. Help Thaw Toads indeed 🤘. Gonna go find out what flanger Dan has been using recently. Cheers, y'all.

Awesome video thank you! One avenue that hasn’t been explored on the show is stereo amplifiers and I am hopeful that might come in the future. My main interest is the magnatone amps with stereo vibrato! Also tonebender episode?

Idk how but you guys are posting videos about the specific things that I’ve trying to figure out lately and they’re posting just as I’m thinking about them. Most notably the recent EL84/Vox video, as I’m searching for a Vox style amp, and now a video about searching for an Electric mistress style flange as I am looking for one... it’s like you are reading my minds 😂

For a long time I could not understand why anyone would use a flanger. I had tried a couple but did not find them useful. After your previous episode on flangers I decided to get one again and then I realized I had been doing it all wrong. On a flanger, the typical pedal approach (start with all knobs at noon, then all of them on full) does not work. No: with a flanger you set all of the pots conservatively and start to raise only one of them past noon. A much easier approach to a good sound. Once you learn that you realize that the flanger is one of the most powerful effects there is. Anything from a doubling type of sound to a chorusy sound to a jet plane swoosh and beyond. I really love mine now, thanks to your show.

Very interesting! Too bad though you didn't include the Alexander Pedal f13 Neo Flanger. It also does the Blend/Mix and a lot more in a very compact Size.

Well, I was really stoked to see this video for I am also a flange junky. However, I felt like you didn't spend nearly enough time finding sounds with the Thorpy that sound as inspiring as the ones you got with the Dreadbox. We've been talking for weeks about this flanger, and I feel like Dan kinda let Mick hit the "wrap-it-up" button too soon on that one. Hopefully you'll bring it back and just do a good playthrough of the Camouflange. At first I was like Awww Yeahh! And then I was like wait what?! IT was just starting to get good! In the meantime, I'll go listen again...love you dudes! Aloha

Hey Dan (and Mick) love the show been watching since the beginning when you guys first started and love your content. I learn something new every week and it makes me want to start my own studio in the future. Dan i know you have a love for flanger pedals so I want to recommend one to you just as another colour to try out. I love my Ibanez CF7 Chorus/Flanger so much and have been using it for over 10 years now. Its from the Tone Lok series of pedals and i really like the tones i get out of it. It has a knob to control the delay time and I find it very useful for dialling in the perfect sound I'm looking for. The level does drop a bit in the wack'd mode but that is more for the crazy sounds (though i've found some very subtle setting there too), but the normal mode is full and fat. Love it on clean sounds (almost an always on pedal for me) and its killer after a fuzz for solos. The speed and depth controls can be set to 0 meaning you can set a fixed delay point which can be really cool for a solo with a short tape delay. Just wanted to mention it to you because I don't see a lot of people talking about it and its become a favourite of mine over the years. Keep up the awesome show guys and cheers from Perth! Would love to see you guys down under someday :)

Flanger is an effect I get sick of pretty quickly, but I loved the sound of the EHX with the Harlot through those amps, and I can see some real potential in the camoflange.

I know there's a chip in there that you're not happy about but over all its looking well well loved. Would be great to see a 5-10 min vlog on that guitar (and include the time you lost it :P)

Nice one. I have the A/DA here - the sockets are too close together for most pancake type plugs, but I've just discovered the SquarePlug - sorted. The adjustments are sensitive, the odd-even thing comes into play depending where it's set, odd sounds better for the more chorus type sounds.
