That’s exactly what I was thinking. There wasn’t a single young person in that factory (as far as I could see) that would be my dream come true to work in that factory. Any spare time I would craft my own blade using the skills I learn.
I have a helle sigmund, same as in the video. My buddies all like using it when we're cleaning fish and deer. 3 of my buddies bought helle knives after using mine. Lot of farm boys around here are putting there buck knives away in favor of helle. Back to our roots, as most of us here in Northern Wisconsin are of norwegian stock.
Greetings from Brasil. My brother once travel to Norway and bought a Helle for me. I work in a farm and use my knife and is a excelent work equipament.
Hola!
I started my knives collection about 40 years ago with a Helle knife - later I bought others knives from them - own about 200 knives of a large range of "houses" - can tell that Helle is one of my favorite brand.
I bought a Helle Eggen yesterday for hunting. It's amazing. I have two large bald patches on my legs where I tested if you can shave with one. Yes you can...
Being a puukko maker i can really appreciate a well made knife like this, it was great to see the steps they use and the end result. I have to do it all the hard way, by hand, understandably the machining speeds up the entire process. Thank you for posting this!
Very absorbing video, totally engrossed from the start well done to the film makers and long may Helle continue,i had occasion to carry one everyday when i was at sea 'the constant companion' is a wonderful description
It's nice to see where my Helle Harding came from. Kudos to Helle for making all their knives & even the sheaths in their workshop in beautiful Norway! **This is why I bought the Harding & because it's gorgeous to look at & use.
Absolutely love my Helle GT! Beautiful to look at, to hold and to use. I know one day I will be able to hand this knife down to my son. I get compliments and questions about it everywhere I take it. Always highly recommend a Helle knife to everyone, including the youth in my Scout group.
Very cool, some smart people. They one invented and built some very nice machines, heavy duty that will last as long as their knives do . I think everyone has wanted one and just are waiting until the right time to get one .
Sunteti grozavi. Imi plac cutitele domniilor voastre si chiar vreau sa-mi achizitionez o lama marca Helle. De un an m-am apucat sa fac cutite, le fac manual si dureaza o vesnicie, dar nu ma las. Aveti niste oameni speciali acolo, va doresc succes. Cu onoare si respect Marius Voicu Max
I have purchased four Helle knives, the Temagami, the Utvaer, the Mandra and the Besseggen. Each one for a different purpose but all great knives. I enjoyed watching how they are actually made. Old world craftsmanship.
I have the Utvaer, Eggen and Futura; the Utvaer is my favourite, strong and feels good on hand, if I would take one for using (I only collect) it would be Eggen, very nice and balanced, pure functional. Love Helle knifes, I feel like I need at least two more, the GT and the Mandra :)
Helle knives the sharpest knife out of the box.I have a collection of Scandi knives eg.Helle Mora martini Eka Falknivens but I carry the Helle Alden everywhere.I use it for field dressing Deer and other game.Excellent video.👍
Hi IsobarikFX...I am buying one of the two knives you mentioned above this week. If you only had one which one of the helle's do you prefer. I am leaning towards the Utvaer because it can be used with a fero rod...but the Temagami looks really good as well. I have medium sized hands if that makes a difference. And for use I will do a bit of everything with the knife. I already own a Helle Viking that I really like. Thanks in advance
I'm partial to the Temagami because of Helle"s "tripple lamination" process (just like the Viking) and because it was designed by my fellow Canadian Les Stroud. I use a ferro rod with a striker, so the knife doesn't come into play for that purpose. The Ultvaer is slightly more robust and a beautifully balanced full tang knife. It doesn't hold and edge quite like the Temagami but that sharpened pommel is really handy for scraping birch bark for tinder. Which ever knife you choose Peter you will be satisfied with it I'm sure. I'm also looking to purchase the "GT" later this year. I've heard excellent things about it. Take care and enjoy!
Thanks...maybe I will go with the Temagami and just have a striker for the fero rod like you do....also a Canuk. Missed seeing Les Stroud twice at Arrowhead Prov Park when he was there playing music with his band. Helle makes such beautiful knives it is sometimes a coin toss on which one to get.
Just checked their website, awesome store. If you get a chance, check out Canadian Outdoor Equipment Company's website in Mississauga, that's where I bought my Helle knives. Hope you enjoy the knife Peter!!
Heart of every knife is steel and most important for the steel is heat treatment. This video is informative on getting familiar how much manual work is still being used for Helle products, which is great, but isn't telling nothing on the steel they use for their blades.
+brainache555 I am asking that because it is not shown in the video. Ju bushcraft alpin had an issue with his knife. Clearly a problem with the heat treatment I think.
The scale from the billet has to be cleaned off. After they cut out the knife blank shapes, the roller cleans off scale and slack on the outside. Gonna guess they heat treated them after that stage and just didn't show it
Love your knives and my question is not a criticism but curiosity..why a rat tail tang is so popular in that area over the world verse a wider range? Thank you
van hill i think just because it feels right, they have axes for big shit, so farmers want it light for farm tasks, even chinese meat cleavers have rat tang
Scandinavian style is to use their knives as a utility knife, and use a small forest axe for chopping. The rat tail tang of quality Scandinavian knives is just fine since they use a decent steel which is a good balance between resisting bending, while also not being so brittle it'll shatter. If you use your knife every day but don't mistreat it, you'll have no problem. Just to be safe though, I bought the Helle Utvær, full tang but beautiful birch scales on the sides.
Looks like a perfect knife for bushcrafting, is there much of a difference between these knives and SAMI knives? appart from one being made in Norway and the other in Finnland. They both have a Scandi grind and seem similar in size and features.
Hi, there are tons and tons of different traditional Scandinavian knives. What you call sami knives is not specific to Finland. The Sami people exist throughout Scandinavia and parts of Russia. There are so many different Sami ethnicities, and they don't all manifacture their knives in one common way. There are as many knife types and builds as there are tastes and natural materials. I used to photo document traditional artifacts at the Ajjte museum in Jokkmokk, Swedish lapland. Knives being amongst them. Those Helle knives in this video are not handmade as you can see. They are spitted out by machines by the thousands. Those workers there today mostly serve to take the blade from one machine to the next. With that said, I don't mean that it is bad quality. But these knives are definitely not handmade in the traditional way. Also, there are countless of non-sami traditional knives in Scandinavia as well. Most likely more so than Sami knives.
One interesting thing is they sharpen their knives before putting the handle on. I watched a Bark River video and they sharpen last for safety reasons.
this show was not what I expected , I had hopes of a more traditional making of the blades not the stamp method , but I look at it like this they have employed 20+ people working making a living that is a good thing ,
Wouldn't you agree that for the size and purpose of these knives, individual forging would not be feasible, even wasteful? They would cost so much more and Helle would not be able to produce very many of them. Perhaps they wouldn't have survived as long as they have if they went that way? There is no shortage of custom knifemakers today. I commend them for continuing the quality and tradition they started with.
That is a question that will never be found out to me true or not .. a good quality hand forged blade will bring top dollar . Appossed to a stamped out blade .
It may be stamped steel but it's high quality steel, I have three custom forged blades that I paid over $300 a piece for, none of them hold an edge as well as my Helle Arv or my Helle GT.
i just opened my first helle knife beautify made but the guy that sharpens them must have to much to drink the night before because the edge is rolled bad
I hope all those Craftsmen have at least two Apprentice's learning how to continue this Great Tradition of first class Knife making !
With what? The grinding of the blade? Many other knife companies punch their blades out and and do their own handles. Thats handmade tradition? Lol
That’s exactly what I was thinking. There wasn’t a single young person in that factory (as far as I could see) that would be my dream come true to work in that factory. Any spare time I would craft my own blade using the skills I learn.

I want one of those knives.
Phenomenal film, what an absolute pleasure to watch such Craftsmen showcasing their love and skill in creating such quality knives. Top Notch!
A well made knife isnt only a tool...it is work of art.
I bought a Helle Eggen yesterday for hunting. It's amazing. I have two large bald patches on my legs where I tested if you can shave with one. Yes you can...
Das nennt man noch echte Handarbeit top 👍🔪
Thanks for this documentary, really nice knifemaker. Helle knifes grew on me after this.
Beautifully shot! And what an amazing craftsmanship!

I can't believe they do the grind by eye. Thank you for this video it is truly inspiring.
Beautiful video and such an amazing craftsmanship!
In a world of change, I hope some things never do.
Amen!
Very interesting how they make my favorite brand of knife!

I´ve never owned a good knife. Now with 35years i bought my a Helle Alden. I prefer this classic over the industrial mass production.
Excelente...
Helle je super.
Very cool!
really hand made perfect 👍
Orion TheDevil I don't see how this is handmade.
This isn't handmade but it is made in more of a 1940s-1950s sort of way.
Watching the opening, it is hard to grasp why my great grandparents would have ever left such a beautiful place and headed for America.
Great knives with a history. But do they heat treat the blade?
+Michael Colet ofc they do...
+brainache555 I am asking that because it is not shown in the video. Ju bushcraft alpin had an issue with his knife. Clearly a problem with the heat treatment I think.

I would love to have a good hand made knife like that.👍
Look up the Helle website and get you one. For about a hundred dollars you can have one of the finest quality and as pretty as any knife made.
Compared to Bark River Knives & L.T. Wright Knives, a Helle is a bargain. And it's handmade in a little factory in Norway. Save your coins & get one!
Greeting from Canada. I have the Viking and love it. It would be better if the rat tail portion (tang) is a bit more substantial.
I bought a helle knife when I visted norway, trondheim specifically
Love my GT
