Thanks for posting this! My everyday carry knife is a Böker Whittler with jigged red bone scales. I am delighted with how this knife takes and holds an edge. I lost one once... now I have a drawer full of spares that perhaps my kids will inherit, along with others in the same pattern but different scale materials. I am impressed that a craftsman makes his own run of knives. Very cool!
jmfa57 then why do I keep getting crappy Boker Manufaktur (NOT Boker Plus) knives from Solingen made with shoddy Chinese handle scales (info directly from B. M.)? 2018 sales do not reflect the work ethic in this video, or something's shady...
76bts MADE. Much of there parts come from China, and are assembled and shipped regardless of whether or not the parts fit right, with no attention to ultimate fit and finish. No effort is made to seamlessly integrate the parts. They don't even try. I've had three different "Solingen" knives in a row that were all junk and the only explanation I received from Boker Manufaktur was that the parts did not originate in Germany.
That was a very interesting factory tour. And it was good (goot?) that the CEO could speak such good English because he made it easy to understand. I think I will now investigate Boker knives further.
Yes. The tree no longer exists. I believe that it was struck by lightning. But some of the wood remained. I have a picture of herald with a piece of the wood made into a Boker tree carving. I don't think any of the wood exists beyond that.
The difference that matters is not the difference between the machines, but the difference between the slave-like working conditions in China, where in many factories up to 30 workers have to share a bedroom, and the working conditions in Germany, where the factory workers have a relatively good salary (of course it could be more, but compared to China), health insurance, social security and old-age pension.
After watching this video, I appreciate my Great Eastern Cutlery knives even more. Let's see, the Boker guy states "14 hand operations". The average Great Eastern Cutlery knife has over 200. That's right, over 200. And it really shows with the quality of the finished knife. Fit & finish is superb. Nothing better.
Sad that a lot of the company's today have sold out their country of origin to save a dollar and have allowed a communist country to use their products to grow their economys, while the very cou try and people that helped them grow and be home successful are left setting with out jobs that they help create, shamefully this use to be my favorite knife but after this news it's no longer a choice of knife I'll buy ever again,,,support your country by buying their products ,and yes I know it's not easy to do ,but when it comes to those big purchase s it's worth the extra to know u have backed your own,
And now let me ask you very simple question here: What exact difference is between these automatic computer operated machines here in Solingen and those very same ones located in Asia somewhere?? NONE!!!
TheVeneth there has to be, because the crappy machine made knives from Solingen are only slightly less crappy than the even more crappy machine made knives from China. Sidenote: the crappy Solingen machine made knives are also impregnated with crappier Chinese made parts that don't fit right before the crappy Solingen machine made knives leave the crappy factory and are never checked for crappy fit and finish before the crappy under informed sellers sell you these crappy knives. It's basically all crap.
Bullshit, they make about a third of their knives in chine i would guess I just came from checking their entire line of solingen manufaktur knives and there are a lot
VicariousReality7 Boker Manufaktur knives are made in Solingen, but they don't tell you that some of the parts which matter (handle materials) are outsourced from China to be assembled in Solingen. I found this out the hard way because apparently nobody from Boker checks tolerances vs fit and finish before the knives go out.
I'm getting ready to buy my first Boker. But what is made in China? That's all I keep reading and hearing is that Boker's knives are now all made in China. What gives?
MrPocketfullOfSteel Boker Plus and Boker Magnum are made solely in China. You also have to be careful with Boker Manufaktur in Solingen because they don't tell you that although the knives are assembled in Germany, Boker incorporates parts outsourced from China. This is nearly impossible to determine prior to ordering, and these parts often do not fit right, and QC doesn't seem to care because the knives go out anyway. *From experience. It's too much of a crap shoot. If you want a Boker that you don't have to play Sherlock Holmes with, buy a vintage pre-owned or new in box, but you'll pay through the teeth for it. Fans of Boker when Boker was Boker know this, which is why prices for old stock are absurd.
this could have been an interesting vid but....but, it was very boring...not enough of the knives actually being made... get a professional company in to re-film it ...who made the vid? was it an 'in-house' collection of bods' (to save money perhaps??). marks out of ten for production/presentation: 5 out of 10 Max.
laxwork uh, hand made in Germany. Right. They mean hand made in Germany with Chinese made parts that don't fit right and nobody cares. Yes. Already experienced this and will never buy an 'authentic Solingen made Boker' again. You are never sure of what you are getting because people are either uninformed, misinformed or just lied to. And even if you can nail down the country of origin, you have to determine where all the parts come from and where the whole thing is assembled for each stage of the assembly. No thank you Gerber, er, I mean Boker.
Added a sportmesser camp/scout with stag to my collection and it quickly became my absolute favourite EDC. its such a beautiful classic , love it.
The perfect combo of automation and hand work. One of the last great knife makers, with a variety from $17 to thousands!

Great tour...............interesting!

This Video was also made in 2007. A lot changes in a decade.

Howabouthetruth I hear Taylor Brands now owns Boker... Come on that was funny.
Dr. Rez I care.
Yes. The bins where full of bone pieces. Thanks!
No hardening ? what is that?
Interesting video.
Boker plus and Boker Magnum models are made in Asia.
Yes
@Temperdgrump thanks,,it is sad,,thanks for the info,,,
I was wondering how my M&P 2.0 knife was made... not bad.
If you want to have a real Böker from Germany... Goto Germany, the prices can be high but the knives can last a lifetime if in good hands.
Old school factory
It is böker and not boker dont u get it
great , id buy a knife fron that guy :) good to know where they vcome from
If it says Magnum it is made in China, all of there Magnum series is made in China.

@citationxbjfv Burned down with the original factory in WWII.
This hasn't aged well.
It's easier to find a WMD in Iraq than it is to find an actual Boker knife made in this factory today.
Good deal, thanks for the response other than the bullshit thing. ;-)

Robots and more robots. I think I'll stick with my American hand/made GEC and Queen knives. I want to be proud of true Artisans, not robots.
