Please note that during British rule HK was a colony. What does “colony” mean? It means that HK people are not given equal rights as U.K. mainland people. U.K. treated HK people as inferior citizens. Why you want British to colonise HK again? You want go on to be exploited?
It is rare to see a colonial flag celebrated by a former colony. The Union Jack represents many things to many people. People in Hong Kong see it symbolizes freedom and liberty.

@@Jay10_6 It's pretty like Taiwan back to 1947 as I know after the hand over of Taiwan from Japan to R.O.C, the Taiwanese realize the governance of Japan is way more better than the National Party of China（KMT） so this caused the February 28 incident. The R.O.C. government in present day is much more better as they democratized. But you know...the CCP would never democratize as most of their citizens are live in a phantom of what CCP want them to see, they will never awake untill they realize the truth of what happened in their country like 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre.

The Taiwanese after about half a century's rule under the Japanese had already picked up many Japanese characteristics and served in the Japanese Army.
When the Kuomintang conquered Taiwan after WWII, some of these Taiwanese soldiers were killed as Japanese soldiers.
50 years or so seems adequate for accomplishing a generational cultural shift as it was demonstrated in Taiwan.
It's thus *important* that the CCP observe its treaty with the U. K. regarding Hong Kong's autonomy for 50 years after its handover.
Using national security to quash Hong Kong's freedom is as *lawless* as it would be if the U. S. A. should nuke Zhongnanhai 宗南海 because most of the major problems of the world 🌎🌍 originated from it.

Ironic, coming from an INDIAN Hongkonger, but I want British rule back. I rather have their flag to be raised over our soil than the red flag of five stars.
In the end of the day, my blood is Indian but my birthplace, my heart and my mind is Hong Kong. Hell, I adore and respect the Hong Kong protest anthem even more than my own Indian anthem.
Britain literally made Hong Kong and founded what it is today. It's either a free, democratic Republic of China, an independent Hong Kong (like Singapore) or a return to our British founders.
There will be a free and democratic China , about 2-3 generations from now, of which Hong Kong will be a city. The flag, march of the volunteers, goosestepping will be same but under freedom and democracy. National democracy, as in Korea.
that's what people don't understand. hong kong is never just a chinese city belonging to the han chinese. since the british colonial days, we have been a cosmopolitan city for trading and business, different groups from the empire and all over the world lived in hk and some had settled and established roots, been around for even longer than some of nowadays hong kongers like me (i myself am third gen hong konger with canto ancestry from both paternal and maternal lineage,so basically in hk after ww1) and this is what shaped this city the most. our history and identity mostly started the day the british came even tho we have a strong southern chinese culture
Sad thing is Hong Kong will never survive as an independent City State. It's service based economy will collapse if it loses the special relationship it has to Mainland China and the unique access it has to China's financial markets, something that exists only and only thanks to it's status as a Special Administrative Region. And about food, it's something the British Administration struggled with all throughout the erstwhile colony's existence, which means that a majority of food and grain supply, even to this day is imported in from the mainland, through Shenzhen. Singapore survives because it has a friendly relationship with Malaysia, resulting in easy access of cheap manpower and ample food supply and it's location in the meeting point of South East Asia and Oceania ensures that it remains important, regardless of the political or economic shifts of it's neighbours, the same does not apply to Hong Kong. Hong Kong's stock exchange and Hang Seng Index are dependent purely upon Mainland markets. The second Hong Kong would go independent, an assumingly hostile PRC wouldn't hesitate to see the island's population starve and strangle all necessary infrastructure and supply trade to and from the island, to try force it back into submission. It's just not possible.

As a 6 year old child sitting in my grandparents house watching the hand over back in 1997 little was i to realise that this was the day when British honour finally died. Had Hong Kong and her people became a nation state and joined as a commonwealth realm or even went it alone the current situation would never have happened. The people of Hong Kong are brave and noble people i can only hope that one day Hong Kong will recover from this blight and rise like the shining sun again over the harbour for as sure as the dark night shall end and the sun will rise anew in the morning
Actually, it's quite the contrary in my opinion. The British honoured their lease agreement with the PRC and returned the territory when it expired. There is nothing dishonourable about that, although I personally would have preferred it remained a British colony.

Yes, indeed. He came to inspect our troop patrols after a sports competition. I remember Queen Elisabeth Hospital's Emergency Room well -- I've been "patched up" over there twice. There was also Queen Elisabeth School in Mongkok with the grassy soccer field. She put him in charge of cleaning up Hong Kong after post the 1967-1968 riots and the short stint by the *last* Governor appointed from the *Colonial* Department.
Hong Kong was assured that it would stay British-ruled until the lease of the bulk of the Crown Colony expired in 1997. He was from the foreign-relations side of the British Government. My Big Brother commented upon that "peculiar change" from the Colonial Department to the foreign ministry saying that Red China had gained a say in reforming Hong Kong in preparation for its return. "We must leave Hong Kong." My Mom concurred because she had lived through the 三反五反in Red China herself and could recognize the reform movements.
