That ms62pl 1880-S is a “details cleaned” coin 100%. They net graded it. PCGS probably won’t do the same. I have an 1880-S in the same boat. It has light hairlines on a pl obverse with frosty device. It would be an easy 65 and probably 65 star at ngc. I use it as a edc coin.
9:30 i strongly disagree with your assessment here. the grading company got it right. you should put that 62 under a microscope if you can't see all the pock marks on that coin.
On the '85 S/S even being extremely generous an XF45 is the most you could have possibly ever hoped for (AU would not even be on the table!), and they took it down to XF40 for the obvious cleaning, sorry but that is the best outcome you could reasonably expect. On the 1880-s I would say you were lucky you did not get a 'cleaned' designation as well as the 'MS62 all those parallel cleaning marks in the left field? c'mon, and liberty has the three marks right by her mouth, clean cheek true, but those marks still stand out, and it's definitely nowhere near DMPL, that takes a 'black and white' coin with regard to CONTRAST between devices and fields, that is the detemrining factor! It's absolutely not present on this coin, and the fields are super scuffy due to it's having been cleaned. You mean to say you see that strength of contrast on this coin? You are deluding yourself. While I sympathise with your disappointment. I would say you were not realistic in your expectations to begin with (when coins were initially assessed and sent in by you) and now you are trying to rationalize away the clear condition detractors that are probably readily apparent to most collectors watching this video.
This will help you in life, not just with coins. If 1 person says you are wrong...'eff them. But when you over grade a coin 90% of the time, and think every coin is DMPL/cameo, then the issue is *YOU*. Eat some humble pie. Admit you need to learn more. Stop blaming PCGS. 90% means the issue is within. I'm the same way. Hard thing to accept. Gotta pick up on the patterns and take it upon yourself to change. Or gripe 24/7. But it's not appealing from a viewing standpoint. I stopped at 6:05 and couldn't handle any more.
PCGS will do them down to AU-58 and possibly even lower than that. But definitely not under AU. I have seen AU-58s get them though. I know that for sure.
I know nothing about stabbed coins, if u don't like the grade and think it should be a higher grade can u break it and re send it in? I understand it cost money to grade but if ur coin got the 1 more higher grade that would make up for the cost
You have no MS65's. 65 will basically be called gem and have no dings, scratches or any other marks. I got an order back from ANACS and I was not pleased, they seem to go down 1 point a few came back ok (less than half)
This isn’t quite accurate. I’ve properly guessed several 65’s. The check has to be nearly flawless and the fields can have chatter. To be a 66 the cheek must be flawless and the fields need to be nearly clean and a good strike.
👍 Thank you! I believe you are correct that some things have changed. For the better or for the worse is the question. Yes, I see questionable grades, grades being too low, and the turnaround time being so long is new to me. Anyways, please keep 'em coming!
Looks like you're doing really well picking out nice cheeks, but you might be undervaluing field chatter. The 80-S seemed, on video at least, to have a fair amount of very small field marks. Plus, like you said, those are always graded tight. All that being said, I still think if you graded it ten times it would come back better than a 62 seventy five of the time. That's a bummer. I'd be interested in seeing the PCGS result. On the Franklin, I think they'll only give FBL attribution on MS coins.
You have to learn to recognize when your coins are cleaned. I’ve been collecting since 70’s and I’d say the 1880S has altered surface where the cheeks has been smoothed based on little view I see and wear in the hair as well as cleaned in the fields… 1880 S should be a strong strike unlike O mint… just seeing what you want to see… and ANACs is super generous
You know I view ANA on a much lower scale than you do. All 80S and 81S look that nice and pcgs will never give you PL on that. You thought it might be cleaned and I think you are right. Are you looking at these coins with a 20 power mag? You have a lot of chatter in the field and with pl ish they will show each one. Love the video.
Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe they will ever give you a full bell designation if it is not ms 60 or better. same with full bands or split bands or full steps.
That 1880-S, clean cheek but what about that hit next to her mouth? It's either a 62 or 63--early S mints get graded harshly. On the 1898, you didn't show the reverse at all. Can't say I agree with the MS 60 details though--it's a 65 without the scratch.
@@rockysramblings Anyone else notice since collectors universe purchased PCGS back in 2020, the company went to 💩? Don`t worry about the grade you get if its not quite favorable. Its good holdered and safe. If you go to sell you may get the better grade from a buyer that sees it too. Otherwise they want you to keep submitting a coin to upgrade. They want those submission fees.
MS60 Details means any details coin with uncirculated detail. ANACS only does specific details grades up to AU58 before throwing everything into the same group
I've seen 63 details. I think it depends on the issue. Like a wheelmark on the reverse... there's no reason to drop a nice coin all the way to 60 for that.
I read that ANACS has "toughen" their grading standards, I suppose, to be viewed as tough grading company, thus, a better grading service. The problem is that lower grades doesn't make them better. Only more accurate grading would make them better. As far as I'm concerned, the value of big five grading companies is authentication. The rest of it is just an opinion driven in a big part to gain a better industry standing.
it's not only about the face. the fields of some of these coins have enough marks to justify the grades. if some of these senet to pcgs or ngc would be detail cleaned coins.
I was concerned about the 80 S being deemed as cleaned. I do worry if I send to PCGS they’ll label it as cleaned. However even with fields with chatter, a face that clean should be a 64. The majority of the grade comes from the face and strike
dude that 1896 although it had some toning it wasnt really that nice. the luster was dulled, the toning color spectrum was just okay. MS 62 on th 1896 was honestly, lucky you even got that grade on it.

1880-S PL...they did you a kindness...it's cleaned. They drop the grade in exchange for calling it cleaned.
I agree.
I agree. Way to many micro scratches on the coin
The Check has been clean/altered to make it look mark free.
I think you should send the 80-s into PCGS so you can find out what a details grade is. That's not a nice 80-s.
Insane!

The 1880-s, is a 62 all day the fields are well marked as you can see when you rotate the coin. All PL and DMPL coins show every mark.
Totally agree
That 80 s is nice but 100 percent a details coin. Micro scratches all over the fields and devices.

Watch my other recent videos. I have gotten pretty good at my grading. This was ANACS not PCGS
THAT 1880S IS A 62, HAS A LOT OF CHATTER IN THE FIELDS
No FBL on coins less than MS. Same for FS and FB.

Your ignoring the fields they impact your grade too
That 1880 MS62PL is mental.
The only thing I can think of is that they thought it may have been cleaned and gave it a net grade. But still!!

with my experience, ANACS does not over grade.
I hope you regrade them!!!
Your coins look beautiful to me!
Again, send the hold box to PCGS
Once it has details it shouldn't even get a grade.
I think it’s a nice feature. It’s still given the details grade anyway.
Maybe they accidentally put both coins in the wrong holder(?)
